Eugenio Calderon

HARLINGEN, TX — Eugenio Calderon, 70, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2003 in Brownsville, TX. He was born November 15, 1933 in Harlingen, TX. Eugenio was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Brownsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Trinidad Sr. and Paulina Calderon; and a sister, Simona Lopez.

Mr. Calderon is survived by his wife of 48 years, Leonarda Calderon; three sisters, Cristina Dominguez (Manuel) of Brownsville, Ignacia Tello (Arnulfo) San Jose, CA, and Enriqueta Moreno (Antonio) of Harlingen, TX; a brother, Trinidad Calderon (Lydia) of Rio Hondo, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Thursday, November 27, 2003 from 1 to 9 p.m. with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Buena Vista Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, November 28, 2003 at 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Committal service will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Manny Dominguez, Steve Dominguez, Narciso Dominguez, Miguel Moreno, Trinidad "Tuffy" Calderon III, and Mario Moreno.

Stephen K. Neuse

SUMMER, TX — Stephen K. Neuse, 36, of Sumner, TX died Saturday November 22, 2003.

A memorial service is set for 10:00 AM Friday November 28, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church of Mission with Rev. Timothy Davenport-Herbst officiating.

Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements in Paris, TX and Skinner-Silva Funeral Home in Edinburg has charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Neuse was born April 29, 1967 in McAllen to Glenn and Judy Neuse. He graduated from Edinburg High School and attended the University of  Texas-Pan American in Edinburg. Stephen married Dana Dowell May 15, 1993 in McAllen. He was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church of Paris, TX, the Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department, and Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. He was a jeweler and student at the  Texas Institute of Jewelry Technology at Paris Junior College.

Mr. Neuse is survived by his wife, Dana Neuse; two daughters, Katherine and Sydney Neuse; his mother, Judy Neuse of Edinburg; a brother, Russell Neuse of Edinburg; his maternal grandmother, Joyce Hibbetts of Edinburg; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Neuse.

Virginia M. Genthe

MERCEDES, TX — Virginia M. Genthe, age 85, passed away Tuesday night, November 25, 2003 at the Comfort House in McAllen.

She spent most of her life in Southwest Wisconsin until her husband and she moved to Mercedes,  Texas to live in Llano Grande Lake Park where she enjoyed many loving friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Aletha and Archie McKillip; and by one son, Miles Genthe.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years Harvey E. Genthe of Mercedes; two sons, Allen Genthe of Platteville, WI, and Dennis (Rebecca) Genthe of Reedsburg, WI; grandchildren, Kent, Dean, Mike, Aaron (Racheal) Genthe, Sheila Gabel, Todd and Tina (Gabel) Liebfriend, Sara Gabel; great grandchildren, Caasi, Ryan, Alexis, Jarae and Adriana.

Memorial services will be held at 9:00 a.m., Friday morning, November 28, 2003 at Llano Grande Park in Mercedes,  Texas.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bendorf Funeral Home of Platteville, WI.

Local arrangements were entrusted to the care of Skinner Silva Funeral Home of Pharr.

Andres B. Cruz

LOS FRESNOS, TX — Andres Buis Cruz, 69, entered into rest on Sunday, February 1, 2004, at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Cruz was born and raised in Los Fresnos, TX. He served his country in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his son, Tony Andrew (Sara) Cruz; his daughters, Irma C. (Rodolfo) Lerma, Dora Cruz and Lupita C. (Roberto) Gonzales; grandchildren, Rodolfo V. Lerma III, Dora Leigh Gonzales, Oracio Gonzales, Jr., Yvonne M. Gonzales, Jacob Gonzales, Joshua Gonzales, Ramiro Gonzales, Melanie R. Gonzales and Jacob Cruz; step-grandchildren, Roberto Gonzales III and Ruben Gonzales; great grandchild, Diandra L. Trevino; sisters, Juaquina Sanchez and Maria Mendez; brothers, Abraham, Martin and Juan Cruz; his beloved nieces and nephews and his wonderful fiancee, Maria Elena Diaz and her loving family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Guadalupe B. Cruz; father, Juaquin Cruz, Sr.; his wife, Manuela Galvez Cruz; his first born son, Andres Cruz, Jr.; his sister, Concepcion Rodriguez; and his brothers, Juaquin Cruz, Jr., Ezequiel Cruz, Sr. and Ricardo Cruz, Sr..

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at San Benito Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday, February 4, 2004, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 5, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel at 10 a.m. with interment to follow at Galvez Cemetery.

Ardath B. McCreery

MCALLEN, TX — Ardath Brown McCreery, 87, passed away on February 1, 2004 after a short illness. She was born on February 9, 1916 in Belleville, Kansas, moved with her family to the Rio Grande Valley in 1918, and settled in San Benito.

She met her husband, J. F. "Mac" McCreery in Dallas and married in Chicago in 1941. After World War II, they moved to Mercedes in 1946 and started McCreery Aviation Company at Central Valley Airport. They moved to McAllen in 1948 continuing McCreery Aviation Company where Ardath was instrumental in the growth and success of the family owned business.

Ardath was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where she was active in church and school activities during her children’s attendance in OLS School.

She was also a member of the 99’s (International Organization of Women Pilots) after receiving her pilot’s license in 1952. She was active in the South  Texas Chapter, participating and flying in their annual cross country Air Race Classics. She was also active in the McAllen Child Study Club and other civic organizations in McAllen.

Ardath was preceded in death by her husband, J.F. "Mac" McCreery as well as her brothers, Orville Brown and Lawrence E. Brown.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Bob and Margie McCreery; a daughter and son-in-law Cathy McCreery and Mark Voit; and 6 grandchildren, Laura, Michael and Lisa McCreery and Kevin, Parker, and Merritt Voit. Ardath is also survived by a sister-in-law, Noralie Brown of Metairie, LA; a niece, Laney Calhoun of Kent, WA; and nephews, Mac Brown and Cort Brown of San Benito.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6-7 p.m., with a rosary following at 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at Kreidler Funeral Home, Inc. in McAllen.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with entombment following at Roselawn Mausoleum in McAllen.

Pallbearers are Mike McCreery, George Mejeur, Alan Stoner, Anselmo Zuniga, Randy Sweeten, and Michael McCreery. Honorary pallbearers are Creighton Domina and Charles Snyder.

The family would like to thank caregivers, Mary Sanchez, Belinda Hamill, Valarie Salinas, and Gloria Morales for their continued care and compassion of Ardath.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vannie E. Cook, Jr. Cancer at 101 E. Business 83, McAllen, TX 78501 or foundation or charity of your choice.

Maria Del Pilar Cortinas

HARLINGEN — Maria Del Pilar Cortinas, 62, died Saturday morning at Harlingen Medical Center due to a sudden illness.

She lived in Harlingen most of her life, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Alfredo Cortinas of Harlingen; two sons, Jose (Rosalee) Cortinas and Alfredo (Marissa) Cortinas both of Harlingen; her mother, Aurora Aguilar of McAllen; sisters, Guermina Aguilar of McAllen, Olga Aguilar of McAllen, Lupe Aguilar of Houston, Elva Zapata of Harlingen and Rosie Lopez of Harlingen; brothers, Domingo Aguilar of San Antonio and Alfredo Aguilar of Harlingen; grandchildren, Jose Guadalupe Cortinas Jr., Clarissa, Araceli, Cristina, Sara, Gabriela, Jasmine and Larissa Cortinas.

Visitation will be today, Monday from 11 a.m. till 9 p.m. at Trinity Chapel of the Holy Spirit with a prayer service with Rev. George Zapata at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at Trinity Chapel on Tuesday at 10 a.m. led by George Zapata. Burial will follow at Heavenly Grace Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Alfredo Aguilar, D.R., Steven Guerra, Juan Almedarez, Leonard Zamora and Alfredo Cortinas Jr.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 S. F Street, Harlingen, TX 78550.

Reynaldo Castelan

BRYAN, TX — Reynaldo Castelan was born in Mercedes, TX and lived in Bryan, TX for 22 years. He worked as a mechanic for Vilas Motor Works and Cook’s Auto Parts before becoming a truck driver for Pena Trucking. Through the course of his life, Reynaldo made many friends and will be missed by friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maria Raquel and Epifanio Castelan, and a brother, Antonio Castelan.

Survivors include his wife, Rosalinda Pena Castelan; a daughter and son-in-law, Ashley and Armando Cedillo; two sons, Reynaldo Castelan, Jr. and Ulysses Castelan; a stepson, David Samaripas, Jr.; a stepdaughter, Tonya Samaripas; a grandson, Armando Cedillo, Jr.; Reynaldo’s surviving brothers and sisters are Tom and Connie Castelan, Ed and Yolinda Howell, Linda Castelan, Jerry and Rosy Castelan, Domingo and Patty Castelan, Epifanio Jr. and Elia Castelan, Robert and Barb Castelan, Jenaro and Menerva Castelan, Calvin an Josie Wright, Fred and Libby Ortiz, and Johnny and Maria Ortiz. Extended family includes Frank and Mary Pena, Frank Jr. and Amy Pena, Alfonso and Lupita Pena, Gaudalupe and Sylvia Hernandez, Johnny and Irma Reyes, Steve Garcia, Mary Ann Milazzo and many nieces and nephews.

Visitations will be held today beginning at 4 p.m. till 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Xavier’s Catholic Church in La Feria. Interment will follow to Solis Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Santa Rosa Funeral Home, 201 S. Main.

Anastacia S. Serrata

Harlingen — Anastacia S. Serrata, 73, entered into eternal rest on Thursday night at Valley Baptist medical Center. Anastacia was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and a member of the Guadalupanas at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. She was employed for 17 years with T.S.T.C. in the food services department prior to her retirement.

Anastacia was preceded in death by her parents, Julio and Leonor Soto; her brother, Guadalupe Garcia and a daughter, Rosalinda Serrata.

She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Juan Serrata, Sr. of Harlingen, TX; children, Frank (Santa) Serrata of San Benito, TX, Juan (Bertha) Serrata, Jr. of Kansas City, MO, Rosalva (Mario) Barbola of San Antonio, TX, Martin (Lina) Serrata of La Feria, TX; two sisters Juanita Hernandez and Mary Pacheco; one brother Thomas Soto of Fresno, CA; 8 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, February 1, 2004, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Monday, February 2, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Catholic funeral service at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church with Deacon Jesus Reyes as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Serrata, Mark Serrata, Frank Serrata, Jr., Matthew Serrata, Michael Barbola and Julio Pacheco.

Anastacia enjoyed being with her family, sewing and working on her garden. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

Suzanne Rosamond Tenison

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Suzanne Rosamond Tenison, 68, of South Padre Island, TX, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2004, at her home. She was born September 22, 1935, in Dallas, TX, and moved with her family to South Padre Island in 1976. Suzie graduated from TWU with a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy and served in the Dallas area for many years. After moving to South Padre Island, she continued to serve children in the Rio Grande Valley. She passionately loved her family, friends, profession, and life on the Island.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Bob Tenison; four children, Paul (Carmen) Tenison, Harlingen, TX, Kevin (Terry) Tenison, South Padre Island, Beth (Dennis) Piranio, Celina, TX, Patty Shelton, Dallas, TX; and brother, Paul (Jane) Rosamond, Rancho Viejo, TX. Also surviving are six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, other cherished family, and many dear friends. Suzie requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Women of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 1163, Port Isabel, TX, 78578.

Memorial service will be held on Monday, February 2, 2004 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 1922 N. Yterria, Port Isabel, TX. Reception and visitation with the family will be at the church following the service.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

George Carroll Vaughan

WESLACO — Carroll Vaughan was born March 26, 1940 to Baylor and Iona Vaughan in Donna,  Texas. He grew up working on a dairy farm with his father who operated the farm. Iona, his mother, was employed in the food service department at the high school’s cafeteria. Carroll played football while attending Donna High School and was involved in 4-H and F.F.A., where he raised sheep, cattle, and hogs for the livestock show. Being the dedicated family man that he was, Carroll gave up his dream of going to college to take care of the farm when his father fell ill. Soon after, he met Ginger Brown of Weslaco and they were married June 16, 1962. Carroll was a man of many thrill seeking hobbies, including racing stock cars and motorcycles, hunting, fishing, and camping. Late in life, he took up making custom hunting knives and created works of art. He created a knife for the President of Mexico.

He enjoyed working with the Weslaco 4-H Club, the Mid Valley Beef Club and the Hidalgo County 4-H Foundation. During the livestock shows, you would find him helping with the sheep committee. He loved to vacation at his favorite spot in the  Texas hill country, tending to deer, hogs, and turkeys. Carroll was employed with Holt Company for 41 years as Regional Manager of the Weslaco store, until ill health forced him to retire. He was an active member of the Bridge Avenue Church of Christ and was a devoted Christian.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Ginger Vaughan of Weslaco; his son, Baylor (Amanda) Vaughan and grandson, Dustin of Sharyland,  Texas; his daughters, Tinka (Sean) O’Dwyer and his grandaughter, Mika O’Dwyer, all of San Antonio and Twyla Vaughan of Waco. Also surviving is his brother, Dale Vaughan of California and several cousins.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, February 1, 2004 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 2, 2004 at 2 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco. Officiating the service will be Roddy Tate, Minister of the Bridge Avenue Church of Christ in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes.

Serving, as pallbearers will be Randy Young, Jason Eberle, Randy Doffing, C.C. Sherwood, Jorge Alvarez, Billy McCulla, Glen Newby and Luther Tisdale. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Melvin Terveen, Kenny Terveen, Tommy Ballenger, Kemper Morrow, Lonnie Rodriguez, Mike England, Gil McMillan, Johnny Contreras and Joe Charles Ballenger.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show-Sheep Committee, P.O. Box 867, Mercedes,  Texas 78570 or to the Hidalgo County 4-H Foundation, 410 N. 13th Avenue, Edinburg,  Texas 78541.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Martin Cantu

Harlingen — Martin Cantu, 74, entered the Lord’s Kingdom January 30, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born on April 11, 1929 in San Isidro, N.L., Mexico to Baltazar and Margarita Cantu.

He is survived by his loving wife, Maria A. Cantu of Harlingen; three children, Juan A. Cantu (Maria) of Harlingen, Martin Cantu Jr. (Ruth) of Saginaw, TX and Gracie (Servando) Alvarez of Houston; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Amalia Cantu, Gloria (Antonio) Gonzalez of Missouri City, TX and Enedina (Marcelo) Casares of Houston. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitations will be held today February 1, 2004 beginning at 5 p.m. and Prayer of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. tonight. Final disposition will take place in Houston, TX at Forrest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
