Betty Lou Kennedy

MISSION — Betty was born March 11, 1919 and met and married George Max Kennedy while serving in the Army together in  Texas. They raised their five children in Alice, TX. Betty was an active Catholic and volunteer. She retired from Southwestern Bell after 43 years of service.

Betty is survived by her five children, Vicki Kennedy Seward, Kathy Kennedy, George Kennedy, Kim Kennedy Calahan, and Stanley Kennedy, and two grandchildren, Tracy Young and David Seward.

Betty spent the last three years of her life at Waterford Gardens in Mission,  Texas. Betty and all of her children would like to thank Lucille Cavazos, the owner of Waterford Gardens, and her employees for all the extra things they did for Betty, like fix her hair and makeup everyday. No one could ask for a more loving and caring place to take care of a loved one in time of need. Betty will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A rosary service was held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2004 at Gonzalez Funeral Home in Edinburg. A memorial mass will be held on Monday, February 2. 2004 at 2 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in McAllen, TX. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito, under the direction of Gonzalez Funeral Home of Edinburg.

Jose Conrado Lopez

Santa Rosa — Jose Conrado Lopez, 52, entered the Lord’s Heavenly Kingdom on January 30, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Ricardo Lopez Sr. and a brother Guadalupe Lopez.

Survived by his wife, Maria M. Lopez and three children, Jose Conrado Lopez Jr. (Amanda), Sergio Lopez (Amanda) and Fabian Lopez; five grandchildren, Alexis Marie Lopez, Jose Conrado Lopez III, Sergio Salvador Lopez, Roy Lee Lopez, and Matthew Lopez all of Santa Rosa; mother, Carmen B. Lopez of Santa Rosa; five brothers, Enrique and Ricardo Lopez Jr. of  Texas City, Luciano, Alejandro, and Daniel Lopez of Santa Rosa; six sisters, Dora Elizarraraz of Harlingen, Julia Ozuna and Rita Gonzalez of  Texas City, Maria Bonilla of Santa Rosa, Virginia Gonzalez of La Feria and Elia Perez of Alice, TX. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitations will be held today beginning at 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. with prayer of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. tonight. Funeral Mass will be Monday at 10 a.m. February 2, 2004 at St. Mary’s Church, Santa Rosa. Interment will follow to Santo Nombre Cemetery under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel.

Lydia Garza Jimenez

Santa Rosa — Lydia Garza Jimenez, 59, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on January 30, 2004.

A life-long resident of Santa Rosa, she was an employee of the Olive Garden Restaurant. She was bigger than life—a vibrant, compassionate, effervescent mother, grandmother and friend. She personified unconditional love for all and her cheerfulness will be sorely missed.

She was preceded in death by her father, Pedro Garza and mother-in-law, Jesusa Anzaldua Jimenez.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Alfonso Anzaldua Jimenez, Santa Rosa; her mother Maria Canales Garza of Santa Rosa; brother Jesse (Janie) Garza of Santa Rosa; three sisters, Delia (Julian) Briones of Santa Rosa, Bertha Quiroga of Santa Rosa, Estela Villanueva of California; three sons, Pedro Alfonso (Irma) Jimenez, Jr. of Santa Rosa, Jesse (Neva) Jimenez of Mission, Martin Martha) Jimenez of Santa Rosa; two daughters from La Feria, Mary Gilbert and Cathy Lee (Juan) Hernandez; nineteen grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Alberto Jimenez, Alfonso Hernandez, Joshua David Jimenez, Martin Jimenez Jr., Carlo Ochoa, Rey Soto, Danielle Gilbert, and Christopher Jimenez.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2004 with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home.

Rev. Andre Kazadi will be the Celebrant for a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Santa Rosa on Tuesday, February 3, 2004.

Funeral services are under the direction of Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home.

Baltazar G. Lopez

MARLIN, TX — Baltazar Lopez Lopez, 64, of Marlin,  Texas entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 29, 2004 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston,  Texas.

He was born on May 5, 1939 in San Fernando, Tamaulipas Mexico to Juan and Petra Garcia Lopez. Mr. Lopez was a resident of Marlin,  Texas since 1986, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and Auto Mechanics was his passion.

He is survived by his wife, Guadalupe N. Lopez, Marlin, TX; 2 daughters, Patricia Lopez, Lubbock, TX, and Rachel Lopez, San Antonio, TX; 3 sons, Michael Lopez, San Antonio, TX, John Lopez, San Antonio, TX, and Peter Lopez, Marlin, TX; brother, Luis Lopez, Brownsville, TX; sisters, Filomena Bueno, Matamoros, Tamps., Mex., and Oralia Garcia Mata, Houston, TX; 2 grandchildren: Anthony, and Tiffani Lopez of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Petra Garcia Lopez; and one grandson, Timothy Lopez.

Pallbearers will be: Omar Lopez, Geraldo Lopez, Antonio Bueno, Jose Luis Lopez, Juan Lopez and Edelmiro Cantu.

A chapel service will be held today, January 31, 2004 at 12 p.m. and interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Roel Galvan

MERCEDES, TX — Roel Galvan, 62, passed away Thursday afternoon at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. He was an employee of Marvin Schwarz Produce and Roy Dominguez from 1964 till 1999.

Mr. Galvan was preceded in death by his parents, Rafael and Julia G. Galvan; one brother, Ruben Galvan; and one sister, Pati Rodriguez.

He is survived by his wife, Maria T. Galvan of Mercedes; three sons, Roel (Yolanda) Galvan, Jr., Rafael (Monica) Galvan and Rodrigo Galvan all of Mercedes; one brother, Rene Galvan of Relampago; and two sisters, Minerva G. Lozano of Mercedes and Idalia Franco of Elsa. Also surviving are four grandsons, Ricardo, Rolando, Lorenzo and Roan Rafael Galvan; and two granddaughters, Alexis Marie and Marina Andrea Galvan.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home chapel with burial following at Mercedes Memorial Restlawn in Mercedes. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Concepcion V. Zamairripas

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Concepcion V. Zamairripas, 87, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas. She was born April 2, 1916 in Mexico to Hijinio and Tivorcia (Lopez) Villarreal. She was a member of Los Vecinos, crowned as Queen at Los Amigos Del Valle. She lived in Willacy all her life.

A Rosary will be held Friday, 7 p.m., at Duddlesten Chapel. Funeral service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., January 31, 2004, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters, Lala (Joe) Gutierrez of Raymondville, Mary (Marcos) Benavides of San Antonio and Ninfa (Fred) Saldana of San Antonio; one son, Guadalupe (Rebecca) Zamarripas of Harlingen; three sisters, Beatrice Garcia, Manuela Chavez and Juanita (Dan) Gonzales all of Raymondville. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Hijinio and Tivorcia Villarreal; brother, Hijinio Villarreal; sister, Hortencia Ybarra; half sister, Trinidad Martinez; and one daughter, Adelina Medina; and Bea De Luna loved as a special daughter.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Jose R. Torres

HARLINGEN, TX — Jose R. Torres, 79 passed away Wednesday night at Harlingen Medical Center on January 28, 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Julia and Feliciano Torres; and brothers: Aurelio and Severo Torres.

He is survived by his wife, Cuca Torres; and children, Manuela (Romeo) Nunez, Maria Gutierrez, Linda Torres, Jesse (Dody) Torres, Nato (Lucy) Torres, Lupe (Gloria) Torres, Joe (Norma) Torres Jr., Johnny (Sonia) Torres; 3 sisters: Belen Martinez, Antonia Lopez, Maria De La Luz Lopez; 18 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Caregiver Starr Cavazos.

Visitation hours will be held today, January 30, 2004, 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with prayer of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m., tonight. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Alphonsus McHugh, S.S.C.C. as celebrant.

Pallbearers will be Romeo Nunez, Jesse Torres, Nato Torres, Lupe Torres, Johnny Torres, and Joaquin Torres.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F Street, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Helen Johnson

HARLINGEN, TX — Helen (Kirker) Braga Burton Johnson, 88, a former resident of Harlingen and other Rio Grande Valley towns passed away on December 24, 2003 at Westview Manor Nursing Home in McGregor,  Texas, where she had resided the past two years.

Born in St Joseph, MO, her early childhood was spent in numerous small Iowa towns graduating from Dow City (IA) High School in 1932. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of  Texas-Pan American in Edinburg,  Texas, in 1965. Her 33 year career of elementary public school teaching began in Iowa and included 18 years of teaching in southern  Texas and at Ben Milam in Harlingen before retiring in 1977.

In 1939 she married James E. Kirker in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To the union were born two surviving children: a son, James (Jim) Kirker, Jr. of Miami, OK and a daughter, Kae Farrell Hineline of Waco, TX; Other survivors include step-daughters, Juanita (Mrs. Sam) Pletcher of San Marcos, TX and Millie Bass of Cypress, TX.

She was a member of the Harlingen Chapter #641 in Harlingen,  Texas, Order of Eastern Star- serving as Worthy Matron five times in various chapters where she resided and as organist until 2001. She is Past President of Kappa Kappa Iota National Teacher’s Sorority. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Combes,  Texas, and is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen,  Texas, participating in numerous circle groups in various cities. Upon retirement, she became an active volunteer for the MHMR in Harlingen,  Texas, the Visually Impaired Persons, and served on the Harlingen Housing Authority board as a Commissioner for several years. She remained active in organizing rhythm band musical groups and enjoyed playing the piano until her death.

Her husband of seventeen years, Fred W.  Johnson of Harlingen, TX , preceded her in death in 2000.

As a willed-body donor/participant, there was no memorial at this time.

Mary F. Arrendale

SAN BENITO, TX — Mary Francis Arrendale, 83, born June 11, 1920 to Andrew and Mary Alice Bruce in Ranger,  Texas passed away January 28, 2004 at a local hospital.

She married James Arrendale in Ranger in 1940.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James; one daughter, Alice; her parents; two brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her daughters, Sue (Loyd) Barlow of San Benito; Beth (Tommy) Guynes of Snyder,  Texas; and son, Billy (Judy) Arrendale of Blanco,  Texas; sister, Dorene Patterson of Brady,  Texas, and Nancy Maxie of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

There will be a visitation held today (Friday) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Services are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home 701 N. Bowie St. San Benito,  Texas. 399-9992.

Betty J. Blassingame

HARLINGEN, TX — Betty Jean Blassingame, age 68, of Helotes, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2004.

She lived in Harlingen for 30 years and moved to Helotes to be closer to family.

Her father, Bennie Benthall, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Max Blassingame; children, Joni Tornwall and husband Michael of Ohio; Cynthia Grear and husband Shawn of Helotes, and Cheryl Garland and husband Mark of California; 3 grandchildren; mother, Audrey Benthall; sisters, Jan Mallonee and Marty McClendon.

Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m. at Porter Loring North Chapel with Rev. Clark Stewart officiating.

Richard J. Biesiada

HARLINGEN, TX — Mr. Richard J. Biesiada, age 73, died unexpectedly Monday, January 26, 2004, in Muskegon.

He was born March 6, 1930 in Muskegon to Joseph and Frances (Murphy) Biesiada and following his discharge from the U.S. Army moved to Harlingen, TX where he resided until moving back to Muskegon, in 2001. Richard had been a truck driver for Missouri Pacific Truck Line prior to his retirement and also entertained himself with agricultural activities in South  Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Survivors include his son, Michael (Mary Ann) Biesiada of Montgomery, TX; 1 granddaughter, Megan; 6 brothers, Kenneth (Mary) Biesiada, Douglas (Gayle) Biesiada, Wayne (Norma) Biesiada, Donald (Marg) Biesiada, Robert (Joni) Biesiada, Roger (Janice) Biesiada; 1 sister, JoAnn (Richard) Krukowski; and by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 daughter, Jaye Nel Cantwell; and 3 brothers, Thomas, James and David Biesiada.

Private family service will be held at Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Avenue Muskegon, MI 49442 231-726-5210 with the Rev. Fr. Norman Droski presiding.

Memorial contributions to the American Heart Association will be appreciated.

Maybell H. Troop

HARLINGEN, TX — Maybell H. Troop, 91, passed away Monday, January 26, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Maybell was born in Bellville,  Texas on July 27, 1912 to Mr. And Mrs. William Hilderbrandt. She graduated from Bellville High School. After moving Houston, she married M.T. "Mike" Hodes in 1934, then moved to Corpus Christi in 1944 and later to Harlingen in 1948. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church and Harlingen Country Club. After the death of Mr. Hodes in 1975, she married Oren B. Troop in 1978.

Maybell is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends; a very special friend, Toby Hyde; and her loving devoted companion, Mary Mata.

Graveside services only will be held Friday, January 30, 2004 at 3 p.m. at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville, TX with Reverend Milroy Gregor officiating.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Pauline Clark

WESLACO, TX — Pauline Clark, 96, passed away on January 27, 2004 in Weslaco. She was born on April 28, 1907 to Marshall and Mary Elizabeth (Keith) Smith.

She moved to Weslaco in 1923 and married Clyde Dewey Clark in 1925. After many years of working with the Weslaco Independent School District food service department at Weslaco High School, she retired in 1972. She was one of the original members of the Southern Star Demonstration Club and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Weslaco.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sister, Mildred Bagwell.

She is survived by her sisters, Leona Key of Weslaco and Jessie Gloor of Brownsville. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, Thursday, January 29, 2004 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 30, 2004 at 2 p.m., at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Serving as pallbearers will be her loving nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
