Harold Fassold

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX — Harold Fassold, 72, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on January 6, 2004.

Mr. Fassold was a resident of South Padre Island,  Texas for 30 years, and very active in the community.

Survivors include his wife, Melba J. Fassold of South Padre Island, TX; 3 daughters, Patricia (Alejandro) Blancas of South Padre Island, Dianne Hancock of South Padre Island, Debra Fassold Garcia of South Padre Island; 4 grandchildren, Ray (Stacey) Brandriff of South Padre Island, Christopher J. Brandriff of South Padre Island, Benjamin Hancock of Hawaii, and Natlie Garcia of South Padre Island; 1 brother, John (Amelia) Fassold of Kingsville, TX.

He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Michael Fassold and Craig Fassold; grandson, Nathan Hancock; great grandson, Ty Angel Brandriff.

Visitation will be held today, January 8, 2004 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Island Baptist Church, 107 Mesquite St., with a prayer service starting at 6 p.m.

Visitation will continue Friday, January 9, 2004 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Island Baptist Church with graveside service to be held at 3 p.m. at Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 4464 Old Port Isabel Rd. in Brownsville,  Texas.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, TX. 399-1331.

Isidro Sandoval

SAN BENITO, TX — Isidro Sandoval, loving husband, father and friend passed away peacefully at his home in San benito on Tuesday, January 6, 2004.

Isidro was 54 and lifelong resident of San Benito until his illness, he worked for the City of Harlingen Waterworks Department.

He is preceded in death by his father, Nicolas Sandoval; and brother, Nicolas Sandoval, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Maria Guadalupe Sandoval; daughter, Cynthia Sandoval; sons, Isidro Sandoval, Jr. and Gregorio Sandoval; three grandchildren, Isidro Sandoval III, Jasmine Sandoval and Skye Avian Sandoval; his mother, Enriqueta Sandoval; sisters, Clara Gamez, Juana Moreno, Maria Isabel Longoria, Josefina Escobedo, Angelina Villafranco, Maria Padilla; brothers, Enrique Sandoval, Max Sandoval, Santos Sandoval, Roberto Zuniga, Salvador Maldonado; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, January 8, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be: Noe Aguirre, Enrique Sandoval, Jr., Jesus Garcia, Adolfo Gamez, Juan Longoria and Jesse Villafranco. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, 956-399-1331.

Jose G. Tovar

SEBASTIAN, TX — Jose Grabiel Tovar, passed away at the age of 41. He was born in Sebastian to Jorge and Cirilda (Gomez) Tovar.

A rosary will be held Thursday 7 p.m., at Duddlesten Chapel.

Funeral service will be held Friday, 3 p.m., January 9, 2004, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Tovar Cemetery in Sebastian.

He is survived by his two sons, Joey Tovar of Sebastian and Christopher Tovar of La Feria; his mother, Cirilda Tovar of Sebastian; five brothers, George (Olivia) Tovar and Pedro Tovar both of Sebastian, Jesus (Virginia) Tovar of Grand Prairie, Javier (Sheryll) Tovar of Sebastian and Juan (Sandra) Tovar of Harlingen; seven sisters, Maria (Tom) Sinasac of Beeville, TX, Edna Scott of  Louisiana, Alicia (Rey) Rocha of Sebastian, Estella (Julian) Siller of Primera, Elvia (Manuel) Hernandez of Sebastian, Emma (Tim, Jr.) Galvan of Harlingen and Sylvia (Omar) Perez of Encino. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be George, Jr., Pedro, Jesus, Javier, Juan, and George III.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Lois Erickson Hargrove

LA FERIA, TEXAS — Lois Erickson Hargrove passed away on January 5, 2004 in San Marcos. She was born on October 20, 1918, in Santa Rosa,  Texas, and had been a lifelong resident of La Feria until the last five months of her life. She had worked for the City of La Feria for 34 years as city secretary. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Rasmus and Elvira Erickson, and her husband, Oran Hargrove. She was also predeceased by her three sisters, Marie Hargrove, Margaret Warmker, and Edna Fallwell.

Lois is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Carolyn (Dan) Leinneweber and Kathryn (Joseph) Wenke, all of San Marcos. She is survived by five grandchildren, Chet (Kelly) Leinneweber of San Marcos, Cole (Paige) Leinneweber of San Marcos, Cade Leinneweber of San Marcos, Josh Wenke of San Antonio, and Kimberly (Dwain) Adams of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Her six great-grandchildren are Justin, Lindsey, Kaitlyn, Daniel, Tyler, and Lexie.

The family of Lois Hargrove would like to thank the staff at Retama Manor Nursing Center in Harlingen, Hays Nursing Home in San Marcos, and Hospice for the wonderful care given to her while at these facilities.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 919 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 1100, Chicago, Il 60611 or Hospice, 1345 Thorpe Lane, San Marcos, TX 78666.

A graveside service will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at 3:00 p.m., today, Thursday, January 8, 2004.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Julia Barbara Carson Loe

HARLINGEN, TX — Native Houstonian, Julia Barbara Carson Loe, passed away on December 2, 2003. Julia was born on June 27, 1912, in the Heights.

She graduated from Milby High School in 1929 and then attended secretarial school Houston. Over the years Julia had numerous secretarial jobs, started and taught at the First Nursery School in Elsa,  Texas (with good friend and partner, Louise Dixon), and was a manager of several apartment projects in Houston. She enjoyed all of these jobs, but the occupation she really loved was being a wife, mother, and homemaker.

Julia was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Houston. Her favorite hobby was pursuing her interest Genealogy.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco,  Texas on Saturday, January 10, 2004, at 2 p.m., for family members, Julia will be placed beside her beloved husband, Joseph M. Loe, who preceded her in death in 1960. Family members surviving are: daughter, Mary Lou Courtney; son, Joseph Carson Loe; grandson, Paul Joseph Loe; and great granddaughter, Brianne Loe. Other relatives and dear friends are: Hazel Carson, James Carson, Ray Carson, Frank Loe, John Loe, Helen Loe, Cal Courtney and Virginia Williams.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 11251 Northwest Freeway, Suite 300, Houston,  Texas 77092. The family wishes to thank the caregivers on the fourth floor at Vosswood for their kindness and the excellent care they gave to Julia the entire time she lived there. Virginia De La Cerda

SAN BENITO, TX — Virginia De La Cerda, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

She was a lifelong resident of San Benito, passionately involved in all aspects of local, state and national politics as a member of the National Republic Committee and was an avid hunter. She was preceded in death by Steve (Honey) M. Elam; her loving companion of 37 years, her mother, Julia Garcia; and brothers, Romeo Sauceda, Roger Lozano; and sister, Benita Ruiz.

She is survived by her daughters, Dora Benavides, Janie (Roque) Perez, LuLu Cavazos, Gloria Martinez, Stephanie Lee De La Cerda and Eva (Mourad) Guiragossian; grandchildren, Roque Perez, Jr., Roman Perez, Steven M. Benavides, Hector Serna, Lee Roy Perez, Balty Ramirez, Domingo Ramirez, Mourad Guiragossian, Jr., Joseph Anthony Guiragossian, Mary Mariah Guiragossian, Sherry Lee Jaurez-Chaquinga; her "baby boy" Betthoven; and two great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Roque Perez, Jr., Steven M. Benavides, Hector Serna, Lee Roy Perez, Balty Ramirez and Domingo Ramirez. A viewing will take place at Thomae Funeral Home 701 N. Bowie St. from 1 p.m .to 9 p.m. with the rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Thomae Funeral Home Chapel. Services are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito 399-9992.

Roger Robinson

1929-2004

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Roger F. Robinson was born in Raymondville, Willacy County,  Texas, on January 11, 1929, to Roger Finnelle Robinson, Sr. (1899-1966) and Mary Crowell Robinson (1907-1997), and passed away on January 6, 2004, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas. He married Francine Ayoub in Brownsville on August 28, 1952, and they have three daughters.

Roger attended Raymondville schools, Tarcton State University 1945-1947, and the University of  Texas 1947-1952. At Tarleton he served as Commander of the Corpus of Cadets and received an Associate of Science degree. At the University of  Texas he received Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Jurisprudence degrees.

He practiced law in Raymondville as a partner in Robinson, Strawn and Robinson from 1953 until its dissolution, and then as a solo practitioner until his death. He served actively in the United States Air Force from 1952-1953 as First Lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General’s Department and active military reserve until 1958 and received the American Spirit of Honor Award.

Roger was a member of the State Bar of  Texas from 1952 and the Bar Association of Willacy County from 1953 until his death. He was a member of the  Texas Bar Foundation and served on the District 12-B Grievance Committee 1967-1970 and 1981-1988, as chairman 1968-1970.

He was a devoted member of the Raymondville Rotary Club from 1952 until his death, served as president 1956-1957, was a Paul Harris Fellow, and was honored for 50 years of perfect attendance. He felt privileged to serve as chairman of the Rotary High School Citizens of the Month and Citizens of the Year committee for many years.

He was a member of the Raymondville Chamber of Commerce since 1952 and held the office of First Vice President 1972-1973. He served as trustee of the Raymondville Independent School District from 1962-1967, as President 1963-1964. He was a member of the Rio Grande Valley School Boards Association from 1960-1967, and –served as President 1965-1966. He served as President of the Region I Education Service Center from 1967-1970.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Raymondville from 1940 until his death, served as President of the Administrative Board from 1961-1962, and taught Sunday school for many years.

He was a director of and counsel for the Bank of  Texas, formerly Raymondville First National Bank of Raymondville from 1966 until 1998. He was attorney for the City of San Perlita and several area agricultural cooperatives for many years. He was attorney for the Willacy County Navigation District, Willacy County Drainage District Number One, and Willacy County Drainage District Number Two during their creation and continued to represent them until his death.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Francine Ayoub Robinson; and by his three daughters and their families: Carol and Gary Palousek of Raymondville, daughter, Ana Palousek Copeland and her husband, Cody Copeland of Dalhart,  Texas, and daughter, Alexandria Palousek of Stillwater,  Oklahoma; Mary Ruth and J.T. Mayo Jr. and son, Dustin Mayo of San Perlita; Janet and Rick Lofton of Weslaco and their son, Christopher Lofton, his wife, Antonette and their son, Hunter, of Harlingen.

A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Raymondville on Friday, January 9, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. James Schendel and Rev. Walter Pohland officiating. A private interment will be held at another time. Members of the Raymondville Rotary Club will be honorary pallbearers. The family requests that those wishing to make memorial contributions make them to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Raymondville or to the Raymondville Rotary Club Scholarship Fund.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Jose De La Fuente

ALAMO, TX — Jose De La Fuente, 72, passed away Monday at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

He is survived by his wife, Guadalupe P. De La Fuente of Alamo; five sons, Aaron Amado De La Fuente of Vacaville, CA, Jose Abran De La Fuente of Charlotte, NC, Joshua Benjamin De La Fuente of Waxhaw, NC, Joel Eluid De La Fuente of Indian Trail, NC, Manuel Jeremias De La Fuente of Catawba, NC; a sister, Myra De La Fuente Fazakas of Winsor, Ontario, Canada; also surviving are nine grandchildren.

His body will be cremated and there will be no services held.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Veldron R. Garner

FT LAUDERDALE, FL — Veldron Rozell Garner (93) passed away peacefully on November 22, 2003, at Willow Manor in Ft Lauderdale, where she had lived since moving to Florida in 2000. Veldron was born November 4, 1910, in Coffeyville Kansas to William Oden Rozell and Nelliejean Stillwell Rozell.

In 1914 W. O. "Rozie" Rozell moved his family to South  Texas to become one of the early settlers in the area.

She married Lester A. Garner in 1939. They resided together in La Feria from 1949 until his death in 1996. Veldron Graduated from Rio Honda High School and attended Daniel Baker College becoming a teacher.

She later earned her Masters Degree from the University of  Texas. She retired after teaching almost fifty years, forty-six in the Harlingen Public School system.

She is survived by her son, Bill M. Garner; two granddaughters, Dr. Jennifer Garner and Julie Garner Hurst; and great granddaughter, Megan Lee Hurst, all of Ft Lauderdale, Florida. A memorial service and interment will be conducted at the Restlawn Memorial Garden mausoleum in La Feria on Saturday, January 10th at 11:00 AM.

Local arrangements will be handled by Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.

Maria Elena Gonzalez

San Benito — Maria Elena Gonzalez, 57, entered into rest on Saturday at Harlingen Medical Center. Maria was born on June 18, 1946 in Raymondville, TX and was preceded in death by her husband, Arturo Gonzalez and her father, Eliseo B. Cortinas.

She is survived by her mother, Antonia Nieto Cortinas; children, Diana Falcon, Lizette Gonzalez; son, Fernando (Adriana) Falcon; grandchildren, Joshua Fernando Falcon, Erin Renea Falcon, Steven Matthew Falcon; brothers Eliseo Cortinas, Jr., Reynaldo Cortinas, Roberto Cortinas, Ruben Cortinas, David Cortinas, Oscar Cortinas and two sisters, Lupita Lopez and Cecilia Garcia.

Visitation will be held today, January 5, 2004 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the Spirit of Praise Church with the funeral service to begin at 10 a.m. with Pastor Mike Sullivan officiating.

Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery in San Benito, TX.

Pallbearers will be Eliseo Cortinas, Jr., Reynaldo Cortinas, Roberto Cortinas, Ruben Cortinas, David Cortinas and Oscar Cortinas.

Maria Elena was a devoted and loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt and grandmother.

She was a generous soul with a kind heart to those in need.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

S. R. "Zeke" Juarez

Harlingen — S. R. "Zeke" Juarez, 65, entered into rest on Saturday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Juarez is survived by his loving wife, Fela Juarez of Harlingen, TX; sons, John Gabriel (Cindy) Juarez of Odessa, TX; Carlos David Juarez of Harlingen, TX; grandchildren, Victoria, Nicole, Nathan, Sammy and sister Corina Juarez of San Benito, TX.

Visitation will be held today, January 5, 2004 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Angels.

A private interment of cremated remains will held at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

Miguel C. Garcia

CORPUS CHRISTI/HARLINGEN — Miguel C. Garcia, 60, died Saturday evening at his residence in Corpus Christi after a lengthy illness.

A native of Harlingen he had lived in Corpus Christi for the past several years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel P. Garcia in 1982; two brothers, Manuel Garcia Jr. and Martin Garcia; a sister, Aurora Soto and a half brother, Manuel B. Garcia of Refugio, TX.

He is survived by his mother, Isabel C. Garcia of Harlingen; his wife, Carol Pantoja of Corpus Christi; one daughter, Norma Garcia of Homestead, FL; three sons, Juencio Garcia, Miguel Garcia Jr., and Eloy (April) Garcia of Corpus Christi; stepsons, Rudy (Melinda), Abel (Rose), Raymundo (Ashley) Guerrero all of Corpus Christi and Jose Guerrero of California; one stepdaughter Cecilia (Tony) Ledesma of Austin; two brothers, Juan Jose Garcia of Rock Gap, VA and Santos Garcia of Harlingen; seven sisters, Juanita G. (Salomon) Rodriguez, Jessica (Juan Manuel) Chavez, Rafaela Solis, Minerva Cuellar, Mary (Alberto) Zavala, Alma (Gerardo) Garcia, and Cristina Barron all of Harlingen; and a special aunt, Selma (Santiago) Lopez of Harlingen.

Visitation today from 10 a.m. till 9 p.m. with a holy rosary led by Lupe Sauceda, long time family friend, at Trinity Funeral Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

Private burial services will be held in Corpus Christi, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 S. F.
