David Garza Vasquez

SANTA ROSA — David Garza Vasquez, Sr., 89, passed away on January 1, 2004, at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was a long-time resident of Santa Rosa.

He was born in Victoria,  Texas, on September 5, 1914. His family moved to Santa Rosa in 1931 where he resided for the rest of his life. A good and decent man, he was the salt of the earth.

He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Francisca Vasquez; stepmother Ramona Perez; sister, Ramona Rodriguez; son, Reynaldo; granddaughter Trissi Leigh Vasquez and grandson, Rolando Vasquez.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Manuela Anzaldua Vasquez. His surviving brothers and sisters include Angela Galvan of Blessing, TX; Samuel Vasquez of Santa Rosa; Lupe Vasquez (Lorene) of Rancho Viejo; Ofelia Rodriguez of Santa Rosa; Rosario Vasquez of Santa Rosa; Felipa Calderon (Pedro) of Santa Rosa and Rita Guerra of Santa Rosa.

His surviving children include Cosme Silva (Nina) of Wichita Falls; Jesus Vasquez (Dolia) of Union City, OH; Eva Senk (Gerald) of Combes; Leonor Michael (George) of Edinburg; Ramon Vasquez (Olga) of Wichita Falls; David Vasquez, Jr. of Santa Rosa; Juan Vasquez (Sonia) of Santa Rosa; Danny Vasquez (Noelia) of Rio Grande City; Guadalupe Vasquez (Clarisa) of Santa Rosa; 42 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 2, 2004 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. for a 1 p.m. mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Santa Rosa. Interment will follow at Santo Nombre Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Cosme Silva, Jesus Vasquez, Ramon Vasquez, David Vasquez, Juan Vasquez and Danny Vasquez. Honorary pallbearers will be Lupe Vasquez and Jose L. Jimenez.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen,  Texas.

Dora Villarreal

MERCEDES, TX — Dora Villarreal, 96, passed away Wednesday at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Crisanto Villarreal in 1936; and a son, Crisanto (Anita) Villarreal; and is survived by two sons, Arnulfo (Josefina) Villarreal of Mercedes, Guadalupe Villarreal of Del Rio, TX; three daughters, Maria Flores, Juana Villarreal, Nina Saldivar all of Mercedes; also surviving are 26 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 37 great-great grandchildren, and 3 great-great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday From 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes.

Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Elizabeth Petru

RIVIERA, TX — Elizabeth (Betty) Petru, 87, of Riviera,  Texas passed away on Monday, December 29, 2003 after a lengthy illness.

She was born on November 23, 1916 in Granger,  Texas to Elizabeth (Strmiska) and Jacob Nemec.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Raymondville for 64 years and Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church in Vattman the last three years.

She is preceded in death by her husband, V. A. (Jim) Petru; her daughter, Charlotte Petru Erickson; and son-in-law, James Vesely.

She is survived by one son, James (Sue) Petru of St. Louis, MO; and five daughters, Dolores Vesely of Corpus Christi, Geraldine (Joe) Kuntscher and Elizabeth (Fred) Yaklin, both of Riviera, Janell Harvill of Houston and Margaret (Jose)  Jones of San Antonio; two brothers, Emil Nemec of Robstown and Edward Nemec of Corpus Christi; three sisters, Frances Kaspar and Margie Kureska of Corpus Christi and Agnes Wade of Victoria; twelve grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Thursday, January 1, 2004 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary in Kingsville.

Rosary will be recited at 4:00 PM on Thursday, January 1, 2004 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 2, 2004 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Raymondville with Father Gus Petru as Celebrant, and Monsignor Stanley Petru and Father Brendan Ashe as Co-Celebrants.

Burial will follow in Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, P.O. Box 204086, Austin, TX 78720 or the Incarnate Word Sisters Retirement Fund, 2930 South Alameda, Corpus Christi, TX 78404.

Elton Robertson

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Elton Robertson, 83, of Raymondville entered into rest December 30, 2003 at a local Harlingen hospital.

He was born to Wesley and Lillie Sparkman Robertson. Elton had retired from the U.S. Air Force having served during W W II and the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, Adell Robertson of Raymondville; three sons, Darrell Robertson of Raymondville, Eric Robertson, and Wayne Robertson both of San Antonio; brother, Dudley Robertson of Altus, OK; and sister, Millie Hess of Angleton, TX; 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robertson was preceded in death by his sons, Elton Robertson, Jr., and Lee Robertson.

A graveside funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2004 at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Juana "Juanita" Rodriguez

HARLINGEN, TX — Juana "Juanita" Rodriguez, 97, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Juanita Rodriguez was born in Saltillo Coahuila, Mexico on June 12, 1906 to Cruz Rodriguez and Secundina Salas. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and a member of La Vela Perfecta organization in the 1940’s. She is preceded in death by her three brothers, Jesus, Wenceslao, and Alvaro Rodriguez; and her three sisters, Maria Moreno, Josefa Rodriguez Sr., and Martina Posada.

Juanita is survived by one cousin, Maria Guerrero of Harlingen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held today, January 1, 2004 beginning at 12:00 PM until 9:00 PM. A rosary will be held at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity Funeral Chapel.

The funeral procession will depart Trinity Funeral Chapel Friday, January 2, 2004 at 9:30 AM for a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Briseno as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria.

Pallbearers will be Ruben Delgado, Cruz Rodriguez, Rolando Rodriguez, Jesse Villegas, Herman Rodriguez, and Javier Rodriguez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel located at 1217 South F Street, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Eusebia Saenz

MERCEDES, TX — Eusebia Saenz, 62, passed away Wednesday at her residence.

She is survived by two sons, Daniel Salinas, Jr. and Manuel Saenz, Jr. both of Mercedes; three daughters, Gracie Perez of La Joya, Iraselma Ortiz of Alabama, Corina Puente of Weslaco; two brothers, George Aguilar of Mercedes, Joe Aguilar of McAllen; four sisters, Gabriela Pina, Maria Morales both of Mercedes, San Juana Aguilar of Houston, Julia Klima of Conroe, TX; also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes. Interment will follow at the Catholic Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Rolando Ochoa

Port Isabel, TX — Rolando Ochoa, 54, of Port Isabel,  Texas passed away on December 30, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Ochoa was an advent Fisherman and Bait Shrimper.

He was a member of Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church and life residence of Port Isabel.

He is survived by his parents, Santiago Jr. and Bertha C. Ochoa of Port Isabel; 4 daughters, Leticia O. (Santos) Sanchez of Harlingen, Sonia Ann Ochoa of Port Isabel, Laura V. (Arturo) Perez of Kansas City, Missouri, and Alma E. (Omar) Alvarado of Harlingen; 1 son, Esteban (Consuelo) Gutierrez of Kansas City, Missouri; 16 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Fronoy (Amelia) Ochoa and Santiago (Sofia) Ochoa III both of Port Isabel; 4 sisters, Nora (Reyes) Guillen, Maria de Jesus (Jesus) Garza, Patricia Lopez, and Sally Ochoa all of Port Isabel; several nephews, nieces and other relatives.

Visitation will be held today January 1, 2003 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home Chapel and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. in Port Isabel, TX.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 2, 2003 at Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church, 705 S. Longoria Street in Port Isabel. Cremation will follow after the services.

Pallbearers will be Cesar Ochoa, Angelo Ochoa, Johnny Lopez, Jesse Garza Jr., Marco Mercado, Jim Leo Ochoa, Christopher Ochoa, and Tavo Ochoa.

Funeral Arrangements entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas 399-1331.

Nancy Stonebraker

HARLINGEN, TX — Nancy R. Stonebraker, 61, of Harlingen entered into rest December 31, 2003.

She is survived by her loving husband, Rodney Stonebraker of Harlingen; children, Loni (Jeff) Piper of  Louisiana, Casey S. Danz of San Benito, Eddie (Kristine) Stonebraker of Harlingen, Lisa (Brandon) Scott of Sea Drift, TX; and 8 grandchildren.

She is also survived by her mother, Stella Krafka; and three sisters, Roxanna Krafka, Karen Krafka and Pamela Krafka.

Mrs. Stonebraker was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Helen K. Ostrowski

SANTA ROSA, TX — Helen Katherine Ostrowski, 83, a long time resident of Santa Rosa, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2003 at her home with her family by her side.

She was born in West Frankfort, Illinois and moved with her family to the Rio Grande Valley area in 1927, attending Valley Schools and graduating from Edcouch-Elsa in May 1939.

She married her best friend and husband, Edward H. Ostrowski, Sr., June 15, 1939, sharing 64 years, 6 months and 14 days together, making many memories and raising two children, a son and a daughter. Helen was always there, not only for her family but for anyone who needed her help. She served countless times as room mother, baking cookies, candy apples, and creating treat bags. Helen attended her children’s school activities and her home was always open to all of her children’s friends.

Helen was not only a devoted wife and mother, but a grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend and an inspiration to all who knew her.

Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Ladies Altar Society, started the Cotton Tops Club #435 in Santa Rosa, a life time member of the Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does #90 and Office Manager for the Rio Valley Paint Company in Harlingen for approximately 20 years. She believed in strong family bonds, happy memories, the importance of pride in hard work and a firm belief in God.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walenty and Mary Kuzniar; brothers, Walter G. and Henry H. Kuzniar; and sister, Emily A. Melton.

She is survived by her husband, Edward, Sr.; son, Edward (Martha) Ostrowski, Jr. of Santa Rosa; daughter, May Gene "Cookie" Garbutt of Corpus Christi; six grandchildren, Monica (Will) Blackwell of Beeville, Michelle (Brian) O’Ferrall of San Antonio, Joe (Cheryl) Garbutt of Murrieta, CA, Millissa (Buford)  Taylor of Michic, TN, Tim (Sherrie) Garbutt of Houston and Ed Ernest Ostrowski of Santa Rosa; nine great grandchildren, Clay and Wyatt Blackwell, Corey and Connor O’Ferrall, Kayley, Aley, and Brianna Garbutt, and Justin and Jesika Dees; one sister, Alvina Eubanks (Charles) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen’s family is especially thankful to her caregivers, Chavela Leija, San Juana "Janie" Perez, Margarita "Maggy" Taguilas and Beatris "Bea" Ortego. Their kindness, compassion and love they gave her will always be remembered.

Visitation hours will be held from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with a Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. that same evening.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Santa Rosa. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews, Charles A. and Thomas Eubanks, Don Moskal, Rick Smith, and Omar Lucio.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Program, P.O. Drawer 2588, Harlingen,  Texas 78551.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, Harlingen,  Texas.

Manuel Selvera

HARLINGEN, TX — Manuel Selvera, 80, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Zoila R. Selvera from Harlingen,  Texas; children, Manuel Selvera (Cynthia) from Kleburn, TX, Alex Selvera (Domingia) from Mansfield,  Texas, Mr. & Mrs. Roberto Selvera from Harlingen  Texas, Yolanda Salazar (Agustin) from Ft. Worth, TX; 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; 27 brothers and 5 sisters, Francisco Selvera, Epifiano Selvera, Adela Selvera, Isabel Selvera, Guadalupe Garcia and Ramon Selvera.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Chapel from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral procession will depart the funeral home on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 10:30 a.m for an 11:00 a.m. service at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Harlingen,  Texas. Interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria  Texas.

Anita V. Escamilla

RIO HONDO, TX — Anita Vasquez Escamilla, 70, entered into rest on December 28, 2003.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Rito G. Escamilla; parents, brother and sisters.

She is survived by two daughters, Juanita Escamilla of Rio Hondo, Rosie Infante of Olmito; three grandchildren, Ana Laura Escamilla, Diane Garcia, Janie Camero; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitaion will be held today, Tuesday, December 30, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a memorial service to be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home with Rev. Lazaro M. Uribe officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.
