Rodrigo J. De la Rosa

HARLINGEN, TX — Rodrigo J. De La Rosa 67, of Harlingen entered into rest December 28, 2003.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice De La Rosa; seven children, Julia (Ernesto) Garcia, Raul (Graciela) De La Rosa, Gloria (Samuel) Trevino all of Harlingen, Rolando (Dalia) De La Rosa of La Feria, Cynthia (Pedro) Mascorro, Valente (Maria) De La Rosa, Corina De La Rosa all of Harlingen; and 15 grandchildren. Also surviving him are his sisters, Leandra De La Rosa, Jesusa De La Rosa, Paula Cruz, Lupe Martinez and Raquel Villarreal all of Harlingen.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Blas De La Rosa.

Visitation will be today (Tuesday) from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace at 10 a.m. with Rev. Pedro Mascorro, Sr. officiating and interment will follow at Heavenly Grace Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steve Garcia, Peter Anthony Mascorro, Gabriel Joshua Trevino, Israel De La Rosa, Brian De La Rosa and Michael Mascorro. Honorary pallbearers will be Raul De La Rosa, Rolando De La Rosa Valente De La Rosa, Pedro Mascorro, Jr., Ernesto Garcia, Ruben De La Rosa and Cesar Cruz.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Muriel K. Carr

Harlingen, TX — Muriel K. Carr, 94, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Muriel was born on February 7, 1909 in St. Louis, MN to George and Esther Kegler.

She was formerly employed with North Western Bell for 45 years retiring in 1973 and a member of the Pioneer Club. In 1980 she moved to Harlingen from Minnesota and became a member of the Harlingen Elks Lodge Does Drove #90 and a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by niece, Pat Garcia; grandniece, Lynn Berlin; grandnephew, Jeff Garcia all of California; niece, Marge Brust and Lisa Benson; grandniece, and 3 great-grandnieces and 2 great-grand nephews; 3 step-children, Randy Carr of Cuddy Hay, WI, Rhonda Holbrook of Conway, AR, and Larry L. Johnson, Jr. of Harlingen.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Newman and her husband, Ben D. Carr. No local Services will be held.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Robert F. Adams

HARLINGEN — Robert F. Adams, 66, passed away Friday, December 26, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Robert was born on June 2, 1937 to Cread and Wilma Adams. He had been a resident of Harlingen for many years and employed with the Valley Morning Star until his retirement a few years ago. He was a member of the Harlingen’s Elk’s Lodge #1889, the American Legion Post #205, and served with the Marines in the Armed Forces.

He is survived by a sister, Martha Jane Adams Watkins of McAllen, sister-in-law, Natalie Thompson of Harlingen and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Adams in 1998.

Graveside services only will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 10 a.m., with military Graveside rites being conducted by the American Legion Post #205 and V.F.W. Lodge #2410.

Memorial contributions may be made to the A.L.S. Foundation.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

C.E. Scroggins

HARLINGEN, TX — C.E. Scroggins, 87, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2003 at Camelot Retirement Center in Harlingen. Mr. Scroggins was born of March 10, 1916.

He was a former resident of El Paso,  Texas and had been a resident of Harlingen for the past 20 years. He was a Conductor with Southern Pacific Railroad for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Scroggins of Harlingen; son, Ronald Scroggins of Miramar, FL; grandchildren, Scott Scroggins, Lori Bauer, and Leslie Mulcahy; great grandson, Austin Scroggins.

No local services will be held.

Barbara Louise Johnson

HARLINGEN, TX — Barbara Louise Johnson, 82, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at her residence in Harlingen.

Barbara had been a winter visitor of Harlingen since 1976, moving here from Minnesota. She and her husband, Robert had been part of the Paradise Park Community in Harlingen for many years. Barbara loved golfing in the Valley and played or many years at the Valley Inn and Country Club in Brownsville.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Robert E.  Johnson of Harlingen; daughters, Saundra Monson of Duluth, MN and Deborah Hansen of Princeton, MN; sons Stephen  Johnson of Coppell,  Texas and Scott  Johnson of Grand Island, NE; brother, Richard Gunderson (Patricia) of Olympia, WA; 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by 3 sisters, 2 brothers and her parents.

Memorial services will be held in Minnesota at a later date.

Those desiring to do so may make memorial donations to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Program, P.O. Drawer 2588, Harlingen,  Texas 78551.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Susana Perez Marin

MERCEDES, TX — Susana (Susie) Perez Marin, 73, passed away Tuesday at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Francisca P. Bowman; and two brothers, Eugenio Perez and Manuel Perez; and her parents, Eugenio Perez and Ventura Ramirez.

She is survived by a son, Cande and his wife, Maria Marin, Jr.; grandchildren, Martin J. and his wife, Leticia Marin, Juanita and husband, Raciel De La Rosa, Ricardo A. Marin, Norma L. Marin; great grandchildren, Victoria, Arturo, Raziel, Marcos, Orlando, Jaime, Roman, Christopher; and a great-great granddaughter, Nina.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes. Interment will follow at the Catholic Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Jose R. Trevino

Harlingen, TX — Jose R. Trevino, 72, entered into rest on Monday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Trevino was previously employed by the Valley Morning Star and was preceded in death by his parents Ricardo and Santos Trevino.

He is survived by his wife Maria M. Trevino of Harlingen, TX, sons Jose Reynaldo Trevino of San Benito, TX, Ricardo (Sylvia) Trevino of Harlingen, TX, Rafael Trevino of San Benito, TX, Julian R."J.R." Trevino of Harlingen, TX, daughters Teresa T. (Rene) Navarro of Ft. Worth, TX, Santos Dominga Trevino of Harlingen, TX; three grandchildren, sisters Carolina (Miguel) Cavazos and Marie Nolan of San Benito, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, December 19, 2003 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a memorial service held at 7 p.m. with Dr. Lee Flores officiating.

Genevieve Dawson Dressler

WESLACO, TX — Genevieve Dawson Dressler, 95, passed away December 15, 2003 at John Knox Medical Center in Weslaco. She was born September 7, 1908 in Ha Ha Tonka, Missouri and was the only child of James and Edna (Davenport) Dawson. She survived polio at the age of seven years and moved to the Valley with her parents in 1919. They lived on Dawson Road in Mercedes and were pioneers in the citrus industry.

After graduating from Mercedes High School, Genevieve was employed by Rio Grande Valley Gas Company as bookkeeper and cashier. She was the first employee in Mercedes starting September 1, 1927 and working until her retirement in 1970. R.G.V. president and CEO, John Emery, thanked her for 43 years of loyal and faithful service. He wrote a touching and descriptive poem of her career and called her a tiny bundle of energy.

Genevieve and her parents were charter members of the First Christian Church in Mercedes. She was active in the organization of the Mercedes Welfare League during the Depression years. It was necessary to provide food and clothing for the poor and elderly as there were no food stamps or federal aide at the time. After retiring in 1970, she and her husband, Walter R. Dressler, whom were married in 1949, moved to McAllen. They made many auto trips and visited nearly every state. After his death in 1979, she moved into John Knox Village and then traveled with a cousin. They traveled to South America, Hawaii, and Australia as well as European countries.

During her entire life, her Lord and her church were her first priority. She was active in the First Christian Church Sunday School and Christian Woman’s Fellowship in Mercedes, McAllen and Weslaco. She served on local levels and on state and district work. She attended national and work conventions. It was her pleasure and duty to call on every person who signed a visitor card while attending church. Even when crutches were necessary for her to walk, she was the little lady with the big smile.

Genevieve is survived by her church family and a multitude of loving friends. She is continuing her Lord’s work by financing future ministers at Brite Divinity School of  Texas Christian University.

A memorial service will be held today, Thursday, December 18, 2003 at 2 p.m. at John Knox Village Memorial Chapel in Weslaco, with Rev. Howard Bloomquist, Chaplain of John Knox Village officiating the service. Burial will be held at a later date at Restlawn Cemetery in La Feria, TX, beside her husband and her parents.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Maria de Socorro Pena

HARLINGEN, TX — Maria de Socorro Pena, 65, entered into rest on December 16, 2003 in Harlingen,  Texas.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Guadalupe Palacios.

She is survived by six children, Carlota Trevino (Esmundo) of Harlingen, Amalia Lamas of Corpus Christi, Mary Castaneda (Rey) of Houston, Benilde Sanchez (Benjamin) of Indiana, Tomasa Bocanegra (Ignacio) of Harlingen, Roy Pena (Lupita) of Harlingen; three brothers; six sisters; 19 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and a granddaughter that she raised as her own Leticia Sulpizio.

Visitation will be held today, December 18, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen.

The funeral will be held on Friday, December 19, 2003 departing the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Harlingen. Interment will follow at Heavenly Grace Cemetery in La Feria.

Pallbearers will be David Bocanegra, Rolando Claudio, Jr. , Rey Castaneda, Jr., Roy Justin Pena, Joseph Anthony Salazar and Angel Trevino.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Jose R. Trevino

HARLINGEN, TX — Jose R. Trevino, 72, entered into rest on Monday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Trevino was previously employed by the Valley Morning Star and was preceded in death by his parents, Ricardo and Santos Trevino.

Susana Perez Marin

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes. Interment will follow at the Catholic Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino funeral Home of Mercedes.

Mary Nenque

WESLACO, TX — Mary Nenque, 75, passed away December 16, 2003 at her residence in Weslaco.

She was born and raised in Brownsville,  Texas and graduated from Brownsville High School.

She married Carlos P. Nenque and moved to Laredo in 1973. She had been a church volunteer at St. Joseph’s in Brownsville, a member of the Bible Study Club at the Blessed Sacrament in Laredo and she was also a seamstress. She moved to Weslaco in the mid 1990’s.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Elvira (Davila) Ramirez; her husband, Carlos Nenque; a daughter, Elsa Nenque; and her sister, Alicia Quintanilla.

She is survived by her sons, Luis (Diana) Nenque of Austin and David Nenque of San Antonio; her daughters, Irma Alicia Fritz of Austin and Sarah Nenque of Weslaco; her sisters, Rosie Barrios of Austin and Sylvia Saenz of Brownsville; and her brothers, Tavo Saenz and Juan Saenz, both of Brownsville. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Charlyn E. Fritz, Alex Nenque, Andy Nenque, Lisa Nenque, all of Austin, David (Cindy) Nenque, Jr. and Amanda Nenque, both of Laredo; and Aubrey Lopez and Nicole Lopez, both of Weslaco; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, December 18, 2003 at 10 a.m. at St. Pius Catholic Church in Weslaco.

Interment will follow on Friday, December 19, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Laredo City Cemetery in Laredo, in the family plot beside her husband and her parents.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Genevieve Louise K. Huefner

WESLACO, TX — Genevieve Louise K. Huefner, 79, passed away December 15, 2003 at Sunshine Haven, Inc. in Olmito. She was born February 19, 1924 in  Pennsylvania to John and Agusta (Buchna) Kluck.

She had been a resident of the Valley since 1960 and was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joseph V. Huefner.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas Huefner and Robert Huefner, both of Weslaco; a daughter, Deborah Ann (Carlos) Alcocer of San Benito; two granddaughters, Mary Elizabeth (Leopoldo) Garcia of Houston and Kara Alcocer; and great granddaughter, Kamryn Garcia of Houston.

Graveside services and interment will be held today, Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.
