Rex Williamson

WESLACO, TX — Rex Williamson, 88, died at 3:20 p.m., November 18, 2003, at his daughter’s home in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was born August 21, 1915, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Charles Wesley and Hattie Collins (Allen) Williamson.

He married Dorothy Mae Brown on May 23, 1936, in Ottumwa. She died March 21, 1996. Mr. Williamson served in the United States Army during World War II and prior to his retirement had been employed by the United States Postal Service as Postmaster and M.S.C. Manager in Ottumwa. He was a life member of the Ottumwa Elks and volunteered for both the American Red Cross and Boy Scouts of America. He had received the associate degree from South  Texas Community College in 2001.

He is survived by his son, Mark A. (Rhonda) Williamson of Weslaco,  Texas; a daughter, Kristi A. (Denny) Paxton of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Schuyler and Lauren Paxton; a sister, Maxine Stebbins of Catonsville, Maryland; two brothers, Chuck of Arlington,  Texas, and Harold of San Antonio,  Texas.

Preceding him in death were his wife; and a sister, Ruth Ives.

Memorial services Were Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at First Baptist Church. Inurnment occured earlier in the Ottumwa Cemetery.

Hershel Lee Prosser

LA FERIA/LEBANON, MO — Hershel Lee Prosser, 90, passed away Nov. 29, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. He was born Nov. 27, 1913 near Phillipsburg, MO.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary and her husband Wally Bunton of La Feria, TX; two sons Rev. Forest Prosser and his wife Mina, of Chattanooga, TN, Rev. Robert Prosser and his wife Toni of MacKenzie, TN; six grandchildren, Durinda Waters, Karen Baker, Steven Prosser, Cynthia Nienaber, Suzette McKenzie and Brian Bunton, and 13 great-grandchildren.

As a young man Hershel worked as a carpenter, later farmed in the Lebanon, MO area, then became a home builder and built many homes in the Lebanon area. His last years were spent in La feria, TX.

He was a member of the  White Oak Pond Cumberland Presbyterian Church, serving as both deacon and elder. While living in the Valley, he attended the first Presbyterian Church of Mercedes.

Visitation will be held at Thieme-Shadel-Hicks Funeral Home in Lebanon, Mo from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2, 2003. Funeral services will be held Wednesday December 3, 2003 at  White Oak Pond Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Lebanon, interment will follow at the church cemetery .

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Mercedes. Local arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Baldomero Alcala

LOS FRESNOS — Baldomero Alcala’, 68, of Los Fresnos, passed away Friday, November 28, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen following a short illness.

Mr. Alcala retired from the U. S. Immigration Service in Bayview in January 1997. He served in The National Guard and the U. S. Navy. He served twice as commander of American Legion Post 632. He was also everyone’s washer/dryer repairman for many years.

He survived by his wife, Beverly Ann Blaker Alcala’; one son, Daniel E. Alcala’; three daughters, Anne-Marie Mata, Margo Elaine Herrera, and Patti Eileen Infante. One sister, Guadalupe Guerrero and one brother, Ramon Alcala’. He survived by his grandchildren, Dustin, Crystal, Angela, Robin, Samuel, Andrew, Nathan, Allison, Gabriel, Brian, and Stephanie.

Visitation will be held Monday, December 1, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Buena Vista Funeral Home.

Mary Frances Glasgow

LA FERIA — Mary Frances Glasgow, 68, passes away Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Mary was born March 5, 1935 in Primera,  Texas to Oren Wailon and Frances Boddie. Mary worked as a Tele-Type Operator for the Harlingen Air Force Base; she worked for The International Boundary and Water Commission, where she met her husband, Claude. She later became a school teacher and retired from the La Feria School District after 20 years of service; she also taught in the Raymondville School District. In retirement she still continued to teach Vacation Bible School at the First Presbyterian Church in Mercedes, where she was a member.

Mary is survived by her loving family; husband, Claude R. Glasgow of La Feria; two sons, Claude Alexander Glsgow of Houston, and Thomas Wailon Glasgow and daughter-in-law, Zulian Glasgow of El Segundo, CA; aunt, Lucille Tanberg of Pharr; brother-in-law, Dick Fiero of Victoria, TX; nephews, Rick Fiero, Greg Fiero; nieces, Jan Fiero, and Susan Fiero.

She was preceded in death by both parents, Wailon and Frances Boddie; sister, Caroline Fiero; and stepmother, Elsie O’Rear (Boddie).

Visitation hours will be held Sunday, November 30, 2003 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. Graveside services only will be held Monday, December 1, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Restlawn Park with Reverend Tom Wessman officiating.

Geraldine Cockrell

WESLACO — Geraldine Cockrell, 74, passed away November 27, 2003 in Weslaco. She was born December 11, 1928, in Groesbeck,  Texas to Joseph and Esther Mae (Jordan) Gammon.

She is survived by her children, Alice Gaines, Carol Beam, both of Weslaco, and Jerry Don Cockrell of Montana. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Amy Cockrell, Shawn Dell Cockrell, Chrystal Pierson, Joshua Beam, Travis Beam, and Kayla Beam; and 4 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, November 30, 2003 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 1, 2003 at 11 a.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco. Officiating the service will be the Rev. Buddy Howard, Pastor of the Victory Baptist Church in Harlingen. Interment will take place on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Memorial Park in Waco,  Texas.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Amelia Trevino Doan

SAN BENITO — Amelia Trevino Doan, 92, entered into rest on Friday, November 28, 2003 at Harlingen Medical Center. She was born on March 15, 1911 in Brownsville, TX. She had lived in San Benito for 90 years. Amelia was a homemaker, a member of First United Methodist Church in San Benito, TX, and the United Methodist Women. She was a descendant of the Cavazos family, who were original Spanish land grant holders of South  Texas, Mrs. Doan married Allen Judson Doan in 1929. Mr. Doan had come to the Valley in 1914 at the age of 7. Together they raised one son and four daughters. In addition they are survived by 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is survived by son, Allen Judson Doan Jr.; four daughters, Elizabeth Jean (Elwood) McAdams, Amelia Jeanette (William) Horton, Almina (Wayne) Porter and, Diantha (Lonnie) Gray; 10 grandchildren, Pamela Adams, Charles Owen, Sharon Ganteu, Allen Horton, Leah Kadunce,  Taylor Horton, Mary Beth Horton, Michael Porter, Kelli Porter Jarrell, and Kristen McMillon, and 16 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Allen Judson Doan, her mother, Guadalupe Cavazos, and her brother, David Trevino.

Visitations will be at the San Benito Funeral Home from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2003. Services will be at the San Benito Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 1, 2003. Officiating will be Jason Adams, Minister of the First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be her sons-in-law, William A. Horton, Lonnie Gray, Elwood McAdams, Wayne Porter and her grandsons, Michael Porter and  Taylor Horton.

The family acknowledges the loving care provided by her home care friends, Elvia Howell, Lupe Cortez, and Nellie Perez, who made it possible for Amelia to spend her last days in her home of 65 years and to her many friends from her beloved church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito, TX.

Feliciano Roel "Roy" Garcia

HARLINGEN — Feliciano Roel "Roy" Garcia, 43, entered into rest on Thursday at his residence. Roy was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and was a graduate of Harlingen High School and T.S.T.C.

He was preceded in death by his father Jose Angel Garcia and his brother Pedro Garcia.

He is survived by his loving mother Gregoria Garcia of Harlingen, TX, sisters Lydia Palomino, Ofelia Sandoval, Delia Garcia all of Fresno, CA., Juanita Reyes of Harlingen, Leticia Alviar of Ft. Worth, TX, brothers Guadalupe Garcia, Jose Angel Garcia, Jr., Julian Garcia, Joel Paul Garcia, Sr. all of Harlingen, Daniel Garcia of Houston, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, November 30, 2003, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Monday, December 1, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. for an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Pete Reyes, III, Abel David Reyes, Joel Paul Garcia, Jr., Michael Subia, David Anthony Subia and Jonathan Lee Colunga.

Manuel Prado Ruiz

WESLACO — Manuel Prado Ruiz, 89, passed away November 29, 2003 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. He was born November 30, 1913 in Alice,  Texas to Juan and Virginia (Prado) Ruiz. He had been a lifelong resident of the Valley and had retired from B. D. Holt Caterpillar Company in Weslaco.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lupe P. Ruiz, Juan P. Ruiz, and Pedro P. Ruiz; and a sister, Beatrice Lerma.

He is survived by his loving wife, Josefina Vasquez Ruiz of Weslaco; sons, Manuel V. (Suzanna) Ruiz Jr. of Lancaster, TX, Raul (Esperanza) Ruiz of Weslaco, Nicanor V. Ruiz of Austin, Roel V. (Yolanda A.) Ruiz of Georgetown, TX, and Jorge V. (Petra) Ruiz of Lawrence, MI; a daughter, Mary Ruiz Alvarez of Austin. Also surviving are his sister, Narcisa R. Cardosa of Michigan and his brother, Jose Angel Ruiz of Michigan; 49 grandchildren and 68 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, November 30, 2003 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 1, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Templo Betel Asambleas de Dios in Weslaco, with Pastor Remigio Pequeno officiating the service. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Serving as pallbearers will be Steven Ruiz, Jeremy Ruiz, Lawrence Alvarez, Joshua Ruiz, Santos Alvarez, Eddie Ruiz, Juan Raul Ruiz, and Michael Ruiz.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Maria Martina Valles

HARLINGEN — Maria Martina Valles, 53, a lifelong resident of Harlingen, succumbed to a long term illness and passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on Tuesday, September 25, 2003.

She is preceded in death by her father, Agapito Serrato Sr., and sister, Inocencia Rodriguez.

Maria is is survived by her loving husband, Francisco Valles; sons, Luis (San Juanita) Valles of San Benito, Jaime (Ruth) Valles of La Feria, and Martin Valles of Harlingen; mother, Eduviges Serrato of Harlingen; brothers; Baltazar Serrato of Van Nuys, Ca, Agapito Serrato Jr. of San Benito, and Preciliano Serrato, Francisco Serrato, Raul Serrato, and Israel Serrato, all of Harlingen; sisters, Ana Serrato and Maria de Jesus Serrato, both of Harlingen; six grandsons, one grandaughter and numerous nephews and nieces.

Pallbearers will be Luis Valles, Jaime Valles, Martin Valles, Andres Salazar, Israel Serrato and Agapito Serrato III.

Visitation was held on Thursday from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be officiated by Fr. Matthias Shanley, CC.SS. at 10 a.m. on Friday, Novemeber 28, 2003, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church , and interment to follow at Heavenly Grace Memorial Park in La Feria.

Funeral services are under the direction of Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home.

Jim Green

HARLINGEN — Jim Green, 69, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Jim was born August 7, 1934 in Fallensbee,  West Virginia to Carl and Estella Green Doty; he was later adopted by Charles A. and Marie Green. He was a farmer and heavy equipment mechanic; and was a member of Branch County Farm Bureau of Coldwater, Michigan and  Texas County Farm Bureau of Willacy, County.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Lois Deal Green of Harlingen; sons, Rick (Sherry) Green, Reid (Vicki) Green, and Rex Green; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; two brothers, Paul (Bernice) Doty, and Floyd Deal; two brothers-in-law, Dayne Himebaugh and Roy (Diane) Deal; and step brother, E. Lester Morehouse.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepsister.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Lee Tanburg, Raul Rodriguez, Abraham Ramos, Tom Madison, Andrew Maloney, and Cresencio Aguilar.

For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Lukemia Foundation.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Manuel Zepeda

MERCEDES — Manuel Zepeda, 65 passed away November 26, 2003 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. He was born in Harlingen and was a long time resident of Mercedes.

He is survived by his wife, Evangelina G. Zepeda of Mercedes, one son, Manuel Zepeda, Jr., of Clarkston, Michigan, four daughters, Sandra Z. Ott of Pontiac, Michigan, Maria Del Carmen Abner of West Unity, Ohio, Nelda Zepeda of San Antonio, Tx., and Leticia Zepeda of Mercedes. Also surviving are two sisters, Celia Areskog and Lilia Zepeda both of North Carolina, one half-brother, Tomas Salazar of Merced, CA., one half-sister, Estefana Adame of Harlingen, and 8 grandchildren.

Visitation will begin Friday from 10 a.m. till 9 p.m. at the funeral home with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the place to be announced, cremation will follow.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Narciso Olivares Cortez

SABASTIAN — Narciso Olivares Cortez 87, entered eternal rest November 21, 2003 in San Diego County, California. He was a native of Victoria, TX born July 25, 1916 to Tomas and Paula Cortez. He had resided in San Diego for the past 22 years.

He is survived by his loving wife Lile B. Cortez and three children: Juan Carlos Cortez, Paul Roger Cortez both of San Diego, and Rosie M. Guerrero of Chula Vista, CA; one brother, Gabino Cortez of Sebastian, TX; one sister, Margarita Rodriguez of Fallbrook, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitations will begin today at San Martin de Tours Catholic Church, Sebastian, TX beginning at 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with prayer of the Holy Rosary to begin at 7 p.m.. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday November 29, 2003 at 10 a.m. with Fr. David  Jackson as celebrant.

John Candler Rogers Jr.

HARLINGEN — John Candler Rogers Jr., of Harlingen entered into rest November 25, 2003 in Harlingen, TX. John was born to John C. Rogers and Georgia Amanda Brewer in Beinville County, LA. John was a member of the National Guard and the U.S. Army where he received a Purple Heart during World War II. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 205 of Harlingen and American Legion Post 2410. John retired from the Postal Service where he worked as a letter carrier for over 20 years.

He survived by his wife Kay N. Rogers of Harlingen; three sons, John R. Rogers of Smithville, TX, Michael D. Rogers of Rangerville, and Billy J. Rogers of Harlingen, TX; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son George Randall Rogers.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Duddlesten Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Lyford Evergreen Cemetery, under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Marian Elizabeth Ullrich

HOUSTON — Marian Elizabeth Ulrich, 86, of Houston entered into rest November 26, 2003 in Houston. She was born at St. Joseph Island, Ontario, Canada to Bertram Rains and Ellen Dalglish. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Alter Society and Woman’s Auxiliary of Raymondville Volunteer Fire Department.

She is survived by three sons, Ralph Ullrich Jr. of McAllen, TX, Freddy Ullrich of New Caney, TX, and John Ullrich of Houston. Two daughters Helen Lauer of Angleton, TX, and Marian Elizabeth Welsh or Arlington, TX; brother Tommy Rains of Raymondville and sister Gene Kelly of Sault St. Marie, Ontario, Canada; 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Raymondville with burial to follow at Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jose B. Juarez

HARLINGEN — Jose B. Juarez, 77, entered into rest on Thursday at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

Mr. Juarez was a longtime resident of Harlingen and is survived by his loving wife Rosario A. Juarez, daughter Mary R. Juarez, grandchildren Jody D. Whitis, Jackie L. Whitis Dayton L. Whitis, III all of Harlingen and numerous other family members.

Visitation will be held today, November 28, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 8:30 a.m. for a 9 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Eusebio Martinez as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Juarez’s family and friends.
