Carmen G. Gonzalez

HARLINGEN, TX — Carmen G. Gonzalez, 92, entered into rest on Thursday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mrs. Gonzalez was preceded in death by her husband, Armando Gonzalez; sons, Ramiro, Armando and Guillermo Gonzalez.

She is survived by her daughters, Maria de Jesus Longoria of Harlingen, TX, Virginia Torres of Dibolt, TX; son, Rogelio Gonzalez of Edinburg, TX; 23 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, Friday, February 20, 2004 from 9 AM until 9 PM at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 PM.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Saturday, February 21, 2004 at 9:30 AM for a 10 AM Catholic funeral service at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church with Deacon Margarito Briones as the celebrant. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Gonzalez’s grandsons.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen, TX.

Fabian Zambrano, Sr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Fabian Mendez Zambrano Sr., age 75, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2004. He was born in San Luis Potosi, MX.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Maria Cruz Zambrano of Harlingen, TX; daughter, Maria Gloria (Margarito Jr.) Rios of San Benito, TX; sons, Fabian (Martha) Zambrano, Jr. of Combes, TX, Ernesto Zambrano of Harlingen, TX, Santiago (Leticia) Zambrano of Combes, TX, Leonardo Zambrano, Ricardo Zambrano, and Juan Zambrano, Roberto (Norma) Zambrano of Harlingen, TX, Rey David (Rosita) Zambrano of Harlingen, TX; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Antonio Zambrano of San Luis Potosi, Eufemio Zambrano of Brownsville, TX, Pedro Zambrano of California, and Natividad Zambrano, Cleotilde Zambrano, Apolonia Zambrano of San Luis Potosi and Cirila Zambrano of Harlingen.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 20, 2004 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.

Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Ernesto Magallon officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home.

Virginia Burns

HARLINGEN, TX — Virginia (Gray) (Powers) Burns, 87, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Helen Spicer

LA FERIA, TX — Helen Marie Petty Spicer of La Feria,  Texas went to be with our Lord on February 18, 2004 at the age of 97. Helen was born in Sloan, Iowa on May 13, 1906.

She was preceded in death by her parents, E.F. Shannon and Florence Aleta Nelson Shannon; two brothers, Charles E. Shannon and Harold A. Shannon.

She is survived by one sister, Dorothy Bazar Gurley, Weslaco,  Texas; one son, Charles Eugene (Annibell) Petty, Luling,  Texas; two step daughters, Sharon Gail Faubion, Flower Buff,  Texas, and Suzanne Marie (Ted) Vides, Miami, Florida; one step-son, John Anthony Spicer, Houston,  Texas; one foster son, Raul Ramos Martinez, Albany Kentucky; 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Grandma we love you and we miss you. We sit here today and long to hear your laughter and feel your touch. The last days we spent with you were the most wonderful days of our lives. They were the hardest but the most special. Grandma watch over us while we wait till the day we can be together again. Love Raul, Michael, Michelle, Jessica, Sharon, George, and Suzie.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2004 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Chapel in La Feria.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 21, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church of La Feria. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria. Pallbearers will be Roger Petty, James Petty, Troy Petty, Michael Martinez, Shane Scammell, Ken Button, Raul Martinez and George Bonk. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Allen, Steven Ybanez, and Damian Vazquez.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Palms Chapel in La Feria.

Virginia Burns

HARLINGEN, TX — Virginia (Gray) (Powers) Burns, 87, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Visitation hours will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, February 22, 2004 with the family present from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held in the Clift Chapel at the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, 10 a.m., Monday, February 23, 2004 with the Rev. Steve Purdy officiating. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Leticia Z.G. Perez

La Feria — Leticia Z.G. Perez, 38, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2004. Letty was a lifelong resident of La Feria.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Avelina; grandparents, Telesforo and Herlinda Rodriguez and grandmother Felipa Zavala.

She is survived by her husband of eight years Miguel Perez; her three wonderful children Cynthia Collen (Lloyd), Robert Anthony and Kassy Gonzalez; sisters, Sofia and Belinda (Maricela); brothers, Randy (Margaret) and George (Hermilia), and her father Guadalupe (Maria) Zavala.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, February 22, 2004 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 23, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at La Capilla Cemetery in Santa Rosa, TX.

Pallbearers will be Robert A. Gonzalez, Randy Zavala, George Zavala, Gilbert Villanueva, Lloyd Warner and Alfredo Zavala, Jr.

Letty loved Life. She was spontaneous and carefree. She will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in La Feria.

Arden Scales

WESLACO — Arden Scales, 100, passed away February 16, 2004 at John Knox Village Medical Center in Weslaco. He was born on March 1, 1903, in Houston,  Texas to Robert and Iva (Lee) Scales. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II as a member of the Seabee’s Construction Batallion. He had graduated from A&M University with a degree in Entomology. During is career with the United States Department of Agriculture, he was named one of the top ten entomologists in the world.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes (Bennie) Scales.

He is survived by his nephew, Otis J. Waguespack of Mandeville, La.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at 11 a.m. at John Knox Village Chapel in Weslaco, with the Rev. Howard Bloomquist, Chaplain officiating the service. Interment will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Steep Hollow Cemetery in Bryan, TX.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Mike J. Till

LA FERIA — Mike J. Till, 57, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2004 at home after a short illness.

Mike was a longtime resident of La Feria and an insurance agent in the area for many years. He also attended St. Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church in La Feria. He enjoyed people and sharing stories with them especially at the La Feria Coffee Shop where he was an active participant in the so called "table of knowledge".

Survivors include his mother, Mary E. (Bessie) Till of Brenham, TX; daughter, Dawn Byers (Mike) of Schertz, TX; son, Sean Till of Port Isabel; sisters, Peggy Till of Arlington, TX and Roseanne  Schmidt (Bob) of Brenham, TX; granddaughters, Makayla and Allison Byers of Schertz, TX.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Felix Till and a sister, Mary Beth Till.

A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church in La Feria, 2 p.m., Monday, February 23, 2004.

A gathering of friends will follow at the La Feria Coffee Shop, 109 N. Main St., La Feria,  Texas.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Program, P.O. Drawer 2588, Harlingen,  Texas 78551.

Virginia Gray (Powers) Burns

HARLINGEN — Virginia Gray (Powers) Burns, 88, entered into peaceful rest on Wednesday, February 18, 2004. Virginia was born in Bedford,  Texas. In 1950 she and William (Billy) Gray moved to Harlingen and opened Rio Motor Supply.

Virginia was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, a sustaining member of the Junior League, member of the Contemporary Study Club and the Cotillion Dance Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Logan and Maude Reeves; four sisters, two brothers and three husbands, Ralph Conrad, William (Billy) Gray and Charlie Powers.

Survivors include her two sons, Curtiss R. Conrad (Barbara) and Paul Conrad (Linda); grandchildren, Lance Conrad, Lisa Parish (John), Charlene Hartless (Billy), Gray Conrad, Brett Conrad (Susan) and Shery Ellenboger (Bob). Virginia was blessed with 14 great-grandchildren who adored their Great Gina.

Visitation hours will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, February 22, 2004 at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held in the Clift Chapel at the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, 10 a.m., Monday, February 23, 2004 with the Rev. Steve Purdy officiating. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 321 E. Harrison, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Esperanza Treviño

PRIMERA, TX — Esperanza Trevino, 65, entered into rest on March 16, 2004 at her residence in Primera.

She is preceded in death by one son, Felix Trevino, Jr.

She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years Felix Trevino, Sr. of Primera, four children, Perla Espinoza (Alfredo) of Harlingen, Rosie Carrejo (Leo) of Harlingen, Norma Galvan (Eduardo) of San Benito, Javier Trevino of Harlingen, 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, 1 brother, father Rogelio Garza of Phoenix, AZ. and mother Manuela Bazan of La Feria.

Visitation will be held today, March 17, 2004 from 3pm until 9pm with a prayer service at 7pm at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 10am at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home chapel in Harlingen.

Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Carrejo, Alfredo Espinoza, Sr., Leo Carrejo, Gerardo Vigil, Freddy Espinoza, Jr., Richard Espinoza, and Jesse Tijerina.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Hazel Velva "Pat" Harrison

WESLACO, TX — Hazel Velva "Pat" Harrison, 76, passed away at Comfort House in McAllen, TX on March 15, 2004, after a lengthy illness.

She was born on December 23, 1927 in Doe Run, Missouri to William M. Taplin and Daisy D. Norton Taplin, Pat married Harold Lowe and from this union, one child was born, William A. Lowe.

In 1950 she met and married Doral D. Harrison in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and from this union, three children were born, Pamela D., Doral V., and Daniel W. Harrison.

From Ft. Smith, Pat and D.D. moved to the Rio Grande Valley and eventually settled in Weslaco.

In years past she had volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother and was a Band Booster for the Weslaco High School Band.

She and D.D. were avid members and held office in the Magic Valley Square and Round Dancers Association.

Pat had been a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Weslaco since 1966 where she helped with Vacation Bible School, participated in Prayer Chain, and attended Gladen Sunday School Class.

She had worked for Montgomery Ward in Pharr, TX and retired from Sears and Roebuck after 17 years in their catalog store in Weslaco, TX. She enjoyed painting, reading, and helping friends in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Harold Lowe and Doral Dean Harrison (41 years of marriage), and 3 sisters; Lois Bollinger, Ruby Seal, and Wilma Taplin.

Pat is survived by three sons; William (Bonnie) Lowe of Mead, CO., Doral Harrison of Devine, TX, and Daniel (Shirley) Harrison of Canyon Lake, TX, and one daughter, Pamela (Virgil) Skinner of Weslaco, TX.

Also surviving are eleven grandchildren; Melissa (Darrell) Merrifield, Paige & Jason Lowe, Angela & Michael Skinner, Jamie Stine, Laurel & Blyss Harrison, Stephanie (Brent) Barina, Stacey and Derek Harrison and 2 step-grandchildren; Stormy Birran, and Curtiss Williams and four great-grand children ; Catherine and Rebecca Schwarz, Justin Merrifield and Clay Barina.

Other survivors are brother-in-law, Henry Bollinger, nephews, Gary and Ray Bollinger and niece, Brenda Bollinger, all of Bryan, TX, along with several cousins, extended family members and many close friends.

The family would like to thank friends, relatives, her church family, and acquaintances for all their support, visits, cards, and prayers during her long illness.

A special thanks is also extended to the staff and volunteers at Comfort House and Knapp Medical Center Hospice.

Visitation will be held at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco, Tx, Wednesday, March 17, 2004 from 5 PM to 7 PM.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco, with Rev. Dr. Jonathan Becker, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Weslaco officiating.

Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Comfort House, 617 Dallas Ave., McAllen, TX 78501 or to the First Baptist Church, 600 S. Kansas, Weslaco, TX 78596.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
