Urania Leos

Harlingen — Urania Leos, 68, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born May 4, 1935 in San Nicolas, Tamps. , Mexico.

She is survived by her husband, Aurelio Leos; children, Marco A. Leos, Jorge A. Leos, Maria De Jesus Gonzalez, Alma Leticia Gonzalez, and Alejandro Leos. Three brothers, Leocadio Candanoza, Marco A. Candanoza, Oscar Candanoza; three sister, Idolina Salazar, Guillermina Gamez, Rosy Romer, and Mary Gantt. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents Alvaro and Margarita Candanoza.

Visitation will be at Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 22, 2004. Pastor Osvaldo Gutierrez will hold a 3 p.m. chapel service Tuesday, March 23, 2004. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral services are under the direction of Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home.

Gertrudis Bejarano Cortez

LAURELES — Gertrudis Bejarano Cortez, 67, of Laureles,  Texas passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas. She was born on October 14, 1936 in Las Prietas,  Texas to Marcos and Beatriz Carrera Bejarano. She was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness Paraiso Congregation of Los Fresnos,  Texas. Mrs. Cortez was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a very kind hearted and loveable person. She was always there for her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Domingo Cortez of Laureles, TX; daughters, Irene Cortez of Laureles, TX, Enedelia Maria Newton of Evans, CO, Enelda Cortez Mendoz of Laureles, TX, Delia Cortez of Laureles, TX, Graciela C. Soto of Austin, TX and Norma Cortez of Laureles, TX; son, Modesto Cortez of Laureles, TX. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Narciso Bejarano of Ft. Jennings, OH and Jose Desiderio Bejarano of Columbus Grove, OH; six sisters, Maria Luisa Ramirez of California, Beatriz Ramirez of California, Juanita Scott of  Washington, D.C., Concepcion Araiza of Lima, OH, Marta Gonzalez of Houston, TX and Maria Guadalupe Aguirre of Columbus Grove, OH.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Marcos and Beatriz Bejarano, brothers, Jose E. Bejarano, Jose Maria Bejarano, Marcos Bejarano, and Leonzo Bejarano.

Visitation will be on Monday, March 22, 2004 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Public Talk at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at 10 a.m. there will be another Public Talk, cremation will then follow.

In lieu of flowers, it is the request of the family that memorial contributions be made to: Domingo Cortez - c/o Irene Cortez at Bank of America, Rt# 113000023, and Acct.# 005746672713.

Funeral services are under the direction of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito, TX 78586, 399-1331.

Jesus Flores

RIO HONDO — Jesus Flores, 79, of Rio Hondo,  Texas passed away on March 19, 2004 at his residence, surrounded by the company and loving embrace of his family.

He was born in Olmito,  Texas on August 13, 1924 to Manuel and Maria Gonzales Flores.

He lived his life as a Cowboy, involved in ranching.

Survivors include is wife, Josefina A. Flores of Rio Hondo, TX, one son, Manuel (Rosalinda) Flores of Los Fresnos, TX; one daughter, Maria Guadalupe (Bill) Hopper of Rio Hondo, TX; one sister, Santos Flacon, Kileen, TX; three grandsons, Dion Hopper of Rio Hondo, TX, Rick Flores of Los Fresnos, TX and Jesse (Janie) Flores of Los Fresnos, TX; two granddaughters, Dina (Victor) Colmenares and Valerie Flores both of Rio Hondo, TX; one great-granddaughter, Karla Colmenares of Rio Hondo, TX and one great-grandson, William Henry Flores of Los Fresnos, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by two sisters, Maria Falcon and Celia Ortega.

Pallbearers will be Dion Hopper, Rick Flores, Jesse Flores, Victor Colmenares, Lupe Ortega, and Jesus Falcon.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, March 22, 2004 beginning at 10 a.m. at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Rio Hondo,  Texas with interment to follow to Anaquitas Cemetery.

Funeral services are under the direction of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito, TX 78586, 399-1331.

L. C. Stewart

HARLINGEN — L. C. Stewart of Harlingen, TX entered into eternal rest on March 2. , 2004.

He was born in Walthall County, Mississippi on September 30, 1929, son of William Byrum and Rosa Lee Stewart.

He served in the Mississippi National Guard from June 1949 until November 1949 when he moved to Irving,  Texas.

After working in home construction and the West  Texas oil fields for two years, he entered the Army in 1952 and served in Korea until the end of the Korean War.

While serving in Korea, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

From Korea he was assigned to duty in Germany. After military service, he moved to Brownsville,  Texas where he met and married his wife Angelica Saenz. L.C. worked as an airplane mechanic most of his career and while serving in that capacity with the Confederate Air Force Museum in Harlingen,  Texas, he was commissioned a Colonel in the Confederate Air Force in 1977.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Angie, son, Louis (Lisa) and three grandchildren, Julianna Jean, Kyle Charles and Nadia Lynn; one brother, Wilson B. Stewart (Mary) from Corpus Christi; one sister, Charlene Mason of Maryland and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his only daughter, Julie Rose Stewart and a son, Robert G. Stewart.

A very special thanks to the employees of Valley Baptist Medical Center’s radiology department for all they did to assist us with L.C.’s care, especially Andy who went out of his way to help us make him more comfortable. We also wish to thank doctor and friend, Todd Shenkenberg and his staff for all they did daily for all of us, as well as the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Service.

The family will accept visitors form 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd., Brownsville, TX. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 1914 Barnard in Brownsville.

Interment will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by members of the VFW Post 2035, Funeral Honor Guard under the direction of Chaplain Paul H. Spell.

Antonio "Tone" Rodriguez

SANTA ROSA — Antonio "Tone" G. Rodriguez age 64, was called home to join his children in Heaven March 19, 2004 at his residence. He was born July 23, 1939 to his parents, Molesto and Mercedes G. Rodriguez. Tone was a lifetime resident of Santa Rosa.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia T. Rodriguez and four children, Antonio Rodriguez Jr., Jaime Rodriguez and his wife Tomasa, Sonia Alaniz and her husband Gary and Rudy Rodriguez. Eight grandchildren, Jackie Alaniz, Valerie Alaniz,

Jaime Rodriguez Jr., Randy Rodriguez, Gary Alaniz Jr., Delilah Rodriguez, Gabriela Rodriguez and Jaymie Rodriguez. Also three brothers, Francisco Rodriguez, Juan Rodriguez and Miguel Rodriguez and two sisters, Marciana Pena and Maria Luisa Rodriguez.

He is preceded in death by three children, Sylvia, Mary and Riche Rodriguez; his parents, Molesto and Mercedes Rodriguez and two brothers, Matilde and Rafael Rodriguez.

Visitations were held Sunday March 21, 2004 at 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. with prayer of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday March 22, 2004 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Guadalupe Cemetery, Sebastian.

Honorary pallbearers will be LCPL Jackie Alaniz and Jaime Rodriguez Jr. Pallbearers will be Gary Alaniz Sr., Rick Alaniz, Tony Saldana, Jesus Saldana, Nathan Gonzalez and Gary Alaniz Jr.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Santa Rosa Funeral Home.

George Maley

HARLINGEN — George Maley, 88, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004 at the Golden Palms Health Care Center. George was born in Southfork, PA on January 27, 1916 to Vincent and Anna Maley.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corp. He attended Gunnery School in Harlingen in the 1940’s. After his military career he moved to California where he worked several years with the movie Studios in Hollywood as a Chaufeur. In the early 1950’s he went to work with the North American Rockwell Corp. until his retirement in the late 1960’s. He then retired to California where he spent a lot of his time outdoors gardening. He then moved to Harlingen in 1995 to be closer to his family.

Survivors include daughter, Pam (Ron) Williams of Boston, MA; son, Steve (Ninfa) Maley of Harlingen; grandsons, Chris Maley, James Maley, Robert Maley, and Eric Jerskey; granddaughters, Jamie Pena and Brittany Williams; great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Rae Maley; brother, John Molesky of Dearborn, MI.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Maley in 2001.

Graveside services only will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park, 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 23, 2004.

The family would like to thank the staff at Golden Palms Medical Center and Dr. Minor for all their care and concern shown to George and his family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Steven P. McPherson

RANCHO VIEJO — Steven P. McPherson, 57 years of age, of Rancho Viejo,  Texas, formerly of Adams, NE, passed away unexpectedly at his home Tuesday, March 16, 2004. He was born on July 19, 1946 in Lincoln, NE, was a graduated of Adams High School, Adams, NE, and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE. He later transferred to Yale University and graduated as a registered respiratory therapist. He was the Director of Respiratory Therapy at the Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona and was instrumental in starting the first formal school of Respiratory Therapy in Tucson. He wrote a book with the cooperation of two colleagues entitled, "Respiratory Therapy Equipment" which was published and used as text booksfor the students of about 90% of the training schools in the United States and 7 editions of this book have followed. His career has spanned over 30 years as a therapist, manager and teacher, and in 2001 he was honored by the American Association of Respiratory care as one of the first 100 persons named a "Fellow in The American Association of Respiratory Care". He was currently the Medical Director of Respiratory Services at the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas and has served on the editorial board of Respiratory Care (the official journal of the American Association of respiratory Therapy). He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He continued to love his home community of Adams, NE, was a staunch "Big Red" fan, and enjoyed fishing and country music.

Survivors include two daughters, Lisa McPherson and Heather Gordon and her husband, Michael, all of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren, Lauren, Joshua, and Jessica; father, Donald McPherson of Adams, NE; sisters, Donna Mulder and her husband, Robin in Lincoln, NE and Beth Delabar and her husband, Bob of Adams, NE; brother, Reverend Dean McPherson and his wife Susie of Sac City, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma (Johnston) McPherson (1998) and nephew, Robert Delabar Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Adams, NE. Interment will be in the Highland Cemetery in Adams, NE. The body will lie in state Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Adams, NE and at the church one hour preceding the service. A family prayer service will be held at 1:45 p.m., Tuesday at the church. A memorial has been established with Kent Krause in charge. Messages of condolence may be sent to rich@griffithshovendick.com They will be forwarded to the family.

The Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Adams, NE is in charge of the services.

Local arrangements are with Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Trinidad Gonzalez

SANTA MONICA, TX — Trinidad Gonzalez of Santa Monica,  Texas died in Valley Baptist Hospital on Thursday, 3/18/04. She was born in Guanajuato, MX on 2/02/21. Trini moved to  Texas from Guanajuato, MX in the late 1940’s.

She began working for A.L. and Adele M. Smith in 1955. In 1960, a couple of years after the death of A.L. Smith, Sr., she moved in with the Smith family as a housekeeper and nanny to Al And Dell Smith. She remained with the family until her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, a brother, Mr. A.L, Sr. and Adele Smith.

Trini will be greatly missed by the Al Smith, M.D. and Dell Smith families, a nephew and niece in Mexico City. She will also be missed by her many comadres and god children.

Funeral arrangements are through Duddlesten’s Funeral Home in Raymondville.

The funeral is at the Santa Monica Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, March 23,2004.

She will be laid to rest with the Smith family plot at the Raymondville Memorial Cemetery.

Genoveva C. Guerra

LASARA, TX — Genoveva C. Guerra, 73, of Lasara passed away on Sunday March 21, 2004 at her residence.

A member of a well known pioneer family, Genoveva was born to Jose M. Chavez and Genoveva C. Chavez of Lasara on July 11, 1930. In the San Martin Ranch. Throughout Genoveva’s lenghty illness, her time was used embroidering articles for her family, she had much pride in the things she was able to do in spite of her disabilities. Toward the last days of her illness, her whole family gathered at her side to show their love and moral support. They reminisced about their childhood memories while they joked, laughed and cried with her. She will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew her.

Genoveva is survived by her husband, Jose R. Guerra, Sr. and their children: Joe R. Guerra, Jr. of Lasara, Sylvia Bravo of Harlingen, Melba G. (Raul) Garcia of McAllen, Omar (Yolanda) Guerra of Lasara, Maria G. (Julio) Rodriguez of Swanton, OH, and Andrea G. (Adrian) Cavazos of Harlingen, 19 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 3 sisters: Dora C. Chapa and Gertrude Chavez of Lasara and Guadalupe C. (Teodoro) Ochoa of Houston, and 1 brother, Jose M. (Olga) Chavez of Lasara.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose M. and Genoveva C. Chavez and an infant sister.

The family is grateful for the loving care provided by Valley Diagnostic Clinic, Valley Baptist Medical Center, Watson W. Wise Memorial Dialysis Center, Sandi Jo Funk Hospic and all her caregivers.

A rosary will be recited Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hernandez Funeral Chapel.

Funeral mass will be celebrated with Father Steve Pujdak at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Raymondville on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at 2:00 p.m.

Interment will follow at the Lasara Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Noe Chavez, Luis Chavez, Guillermo Garcia, Eduardo Guerra, Jesus Chapa, Roberto Salazar, Jorge Cantu and Beto Guerra.

Funeral arrangements under the direction of Hernandez Funeral Home of Raymondville.

Dorothy Lundahl Thomas

HARLINGEN, TX — Dorothy Lundahl Thomas, 84, passed away in Harlingen on March 20, 2004. Dorothy was born in Kansas City, Kansas on September 18, 1919 to Helen Melander and Russell Lundahl. Dorothy grew up in Marysville, Kansas on Billy Goat Hill. After graduation from High School, she took nurses training at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri; where she met and married Arthur Thomas. They were married for 62 years.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Thomas; nephew, Darryl Lundahl; nieces, Jackie Shelton of Pittsburg, MO, Nora Poe of Premont, TX, Carolyn Harvey of Harlingen, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Russell Jr., and Loren; and one sister, Helen Lundahl.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 23, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside services only will be held Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria with Reverend Pat Graham officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Harlingen Humane Society.

Thank you to the Nurses, Aides and Staff of Harlingen Nursing Center and friends at Green Bay South.
