Maria M. Estrada

HARLINGEN, TX — Maria M. Estrada 80, of Harlingen entered into rest Friday, March 26, 2004.

She is survived by her children; Jovita (Rodolfo) Garcia, Josie (Ramiro) Perez, Lali (Ramiro) Salinas, Jorge Estrada, Eddie (Marsha) Estrada, Steve (Lisa) Estrada, Olga Estrada, Naomi (Rick) Roby, 21 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister, Catarina Tello and a close family friend, Luptia Alvarado.

She is preceded in death by her husband; Leocadio Estrada and two sons; Isidor and David Estrada.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 27, 2004 from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. and a prayer service will be at 7:00 pm.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 28, 2004 departing the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace at 2 pm for a 2:30 pm funeral service at Valley Baptist Church at 1926 La Paloma in Harlingen with Pastor Andres Rangel officiating.

Interment will follow at Combes Cemetery.

Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Magdalena Garza

SANTA ROSA, TX — Magdalena Garza, 94 entered into the Lords kingdom Thursday March 25, 2004 at Retama Manor Nursing Home. She was a lifetime resident of Santa Rosa.

She is survived by 4 sisters: Aurelia Perez, Margarita Garza, and Graciela Olivarez all of Santa Rosa. Alicia Losoya of La Feria. Funeral service will be held Saturday March 27, 2004 at 11 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Burial will follow to La Capilla Cemetery under the direction of Santa Rosa Funeral Home 201 N. Main Santa Rosa,  Texas.

Roberto Rodriguez

SAN PERLITA, TX — Roberto Rodriguez, 47, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Tx. He was born January 28, 1957 in Raymondville,  Texas to Mateo S. & Altagarcia (Palacios) Rodriguez.

A rosary will be held Friday 7:00 p.m., at Duddlesten Chapel. Funeral service will be held Saturday 2:00 p.m., March 27th, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery.

He is survived by his mother, Altagarcia Rodriguez of Raymondville; one daughter, Melanie Rodriguez of Harlingen; five sisters, Lydia (Ramiro) Cavazos of Lyford, Aida Cantu and Irma (David) Woolever both of Raymondville, Elvia Rodriguez of Houston and Leticia (Bano) Cavazos of Raymondville; one brother, Mateo Oscar (Mary) Rodriguez of Raymondville; one grandson, Xavier Rodriguez and granddaughter, Kayla Rodriguez both of Harlingen. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be David Woolever, Robert Garcia, Jr., Harvey Salgado, Robert Cavazos, Ernesto Cantu and Ramiro Cavazos. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Betty Givens Bazemore Easton

PORT ISABEL/HOUSTON — Betty Givens Bazemore Easton, 81, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004 in Houston, TX. Betty Jo was born two days earlier than her identical twin sister, Bonnie Jean, to Cecil and Marie Murrell in Wellington, KS. She was later adopted by their stepfather, Earl Easton. Shortly there after the twins, their mother and father moved to Marysville, KS and then to Kansas City, KS.

Betty Jo was married twice and she survived both former husbands, Maj. Edward A. Givens (USAF Ret.) and Lt. Col. Curtis Bazemore (USAF Res.), with whom she lived in many beautiful and exotic places and always found a church home. She was a shrewd businesswoman and managed condos, high rises and large complexes as a Certified Apartment Manager. She will be best remembered for her quick wit, her loving spirit and one who shared her love freely.

Betty leaves her sister, Bonnie Engh, with whom she lived for the past 16 years, her daughters, Janet Givens Smith and Patricia Givens, three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two nieces and her family at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Port Isabel.

Visitation hours will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, March 29, 2004 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen, TX.

Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Port Isabel, 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 30, 2004 with Rev. Phil  Taylor officiating. Entombment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Eva S. Guzman

SAN BENITO — Eva S. Guzman, 57, passed away on March 26, 2004 in Austin, TX.

She is survived by her fours sisters, Raquel (Amadeo) Saenz of Austin, Noemi (Cristobal Rodriguez) Zamora, Rebecca (Roberto) Torres, and Ruth (Gerardo) Cruz all of Houston, TX; seven brothers, Clemente (Felipa) Guzman, Adan (Cristela) Guzman, Geronimo (Virginia) Guzman, Felix (Esther) Guzman, and Manuel J. (Flora) Guzman all of San Benito. Lazaro (Carmen) Guzman of Florida, and Joel (Yolanda) Guzman of Houston; numerous nieces and nephews, and many good friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Anastacio and Bonifacia "Anita" Guzman.

Visitation will be held March 28, 2004 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Prayer Service beginning at 7 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2004 at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her brothers, Clemente, Adan, Geronimo, Felix, Manuel J., Lazaro, and Joel Guzman.

Anthony C. Martinez

HARLINGEN — Anthony C. Martinez, 69, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 25, 2004, hours before his 70th birthday at Valley Baptist Medical Center surrounded by his beloved wife and children.

He was born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan on March 26, 1934, son of Ausencio and Simona Martinez. He was a veteran of the Korean War and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was a teacher for 35 years teaching in the Saginaw School system and later during retirement, taught for the Marine military Academy.

It was during his early years of teaching, that he met his wife, Gloria Maldonado at a teaching conference. They were married soon after and resided in Michigan for over 20 years after which they returned to the Valley.

Anthony is survived by his wife, Gloria Martinez and his four children, David Martinez and Cristina Mitchell of Harlingen, Laura Czymbor (Richard J.) of Misawa AB, Japan, and Michael Showalter of  Washington, DC; five grandchildren, Julia Czymbor, Katherine Czymbor, Gabriella Czymbor, Mia Garcia, and Olivia Garcia; one brother, Ausencio Martinez, Jr. and nine sisters, Petra Romo, Cruz Guerra, Beatrice Rivera, Isabel Flores, Lina Klimecki, Mary Jimenez, Alexandra Strohl, Theresa Martinez, and Katherine Martinez.

Visitation hours will be held on Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a Rosary Service being conducted at 7 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 29, 2004 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, at 1 p.m. with Father Pedro Briseno officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be sons, David Martinez and Michael Showalter, son-in-law, Richard Czymbor, and friends, Ruben "Sonny" Garcia, Eddie Barrera, Christobal Zavala and Henry Alva.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Harlingen.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Paula Garcia

Harlingen — Paula Garcia, 89, entered into rest on Friday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mrs. Garcia was a longtime resident of Harlingen and was preceded in death by her husband Inez Garcia and all of her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her son Jose Mireles of Harlingen, TX and by the Coronado Family, Garcia Family of Brownsville, Arrellano Family, Mireles Family of California, Reyes Family of Raymondville and close friends Martina and Zoila.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, March 28, 2004 from 10 a.m until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Roses with the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Monday, March 29, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Alphonsus McHugh as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be her nephews.

Funeral service under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

Lorece R. "Pinky" McGinness

HARLINGEN — Lorece R. "Pinky" McGinness, 80, passed away at Retama Manor Nursing Home, Friday, March 26, 2004. She was born in Kusa, OK on November 13, 1923 to Sam and Ethel Weatherly.

Lorece spent her early years in Mercedes, TX when the family moved here in 1925. Upon graduation from Mercedes High School in 1942 she took employment with the Army Air Corps and was sent to Hickam Field, Oahu, Hawaii. There she met her husband of 58 years. She and Donald were married in the Post Chapel at Ft. Kamehameha, Oahu, Hawaii.

At the conclusion of WW II she and her husband returned to the U.S. where they resided briefly in  Pennsylvania and then Ohio. She was active in the Girl Scouts in Ohio until their move to the Rio Grande Valley in 1954.

Later she worked as the Director of Crippled Children’s Cottage sponsored by the Junior Service League of Harlingen located at the old Harlingen Air Force Base. She then was employed by the HISD where she remained for 19 years, retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Town and Country Garden Club and loved flower arranging. Flower arranging was truly her favorite hobby and she loved to work with color as well. She and her husband and children have been members of the First Presbyterian Church of Harlingen for many years where she did many of her flower arrangements. She was a member of the Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does Drove #90 of Harlingen.

Survivors include her husband, Donald; two sons, J. Ronald McGinness of Gonzalez, LA and Denis David McGinness of Smithville, TX; brother, Pat Weatherly of San Antonio; sister, Jenell Edgar of Corpus Christi.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Sam.

Visitation hour will be held Sunday, March 28, 2004 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 10 a.m., Monday, March 29, 2004 with Dr. Justin  Jones of the First Presbyterian Church and the BPOE Does Drove #90 officiating. Interment service will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX, 1:45 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, 2004.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Todd Shenkenberg for his long and thoughtful care and attention, also to the staff at the Retama Manor Nursing Home in Harlingen and especially to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Program also of Harlingen. And a special thank you to Debbie Bauer for all her help and attention.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Dewey  Taylor Jr.

LOS FRESNOS — Dewey  Taylor Jr., 71, went to be with the Lord on March 24. 2004. He was born in Phyllis, Kentucky to the late Dewey Keene Sr. and Ann Taylor.

Dewey was born on March 22, 1933. He served in the United States Air Forces for 10 years. He earned the National Defense Medal and the United National Services Medal after serving in the Korean War.

Survivors included his wife, Florentina Elia Taylor; six daughters, Judy Jurban of Michigan, Teresa Henderson of Idaho, Arlene Gonzalez of  Washington, Florence Marie of San Marcos, TX, Brenda Lee and Angela  Taylor both of Los Fresnos, TX; four sons, Robert  Taylor of Michigan, Billy Joe  Taylor of Arizona, Dewey  Taylor III and Eddie  Taylor of Los Fresnos, TX. Also surviving by his stepbrothers and stepsisters, Berkely Keene, Shirley Keene, Roger Keene, Donny Joe Keene, Robert Keene, Betty Lou Keene, Johnny Keene, Gary Randall Keene, Jerry Wayne Keene, and Patricia Keene, 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ann  Taylor and Dewey Keene Sr.

Visitation will be held today, Monday, March 29, 2004 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Chapel Services beginning at 2 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home Chapel, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito. With military Honors Conduct at the Chapel by the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign War. Cremation will follow after Services.

Funeral arrangement entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors, San Benito, TX, 399-1331.

Angela Montemayor

HARLINGEN — Angela Montemayor, 83, entered into the Lords Heavenly Kingdom Friday, March 26, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Montemayor had resided in Harlingen most of her life. She was a faithful wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Felipe Montemayor in 1982.

Survivors include her children, Paulina (Zacarias) Martinez of McAllen, Petra Salinas of Harlingen, Francisco (Flora) Rodriguez, Juana Mungia of San Antonio, Luciana (Israel) Mares of Santa Rosa, Isidra (Ron) Brohch of Ft. Worth, Erasmo (Maria) Rodriguez of La Feria, Merced (Connie) Rodriguez of Harlingen, Alfredo Rodriguez of Tampa, FL, Loretta Rodriguez of Plant City, FL and also surviving are 34 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 29, 2004 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will follow to Heavenly Grace Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F. Street, Harlingen, TX.

Aurora Falcon Lozano

SAN BENITO — Aurora Falcon Lozano, 90, passed away at her residence on March 27, 2004.

She is survived by her five daughters, Nieves (Guadalupe) Galvan of Corpus Christi, Ofelia (Eleodoro) Lopez of San Benito, Lydia (Severo) Beltran of San Benito, Aurora Lozano Degollado of San Benito, and Elida (Lazaro) Lozano of Salinas, California; two sons, Joe (Angelita) Lozano of San Benito and Manuel (Soccorro) Lozano of Watsonville, California; 44 grandchildren and 95 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jesus Lozano; her daughter, Corina and her husband, Jerry Lozano; son, Bill Lozano.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 30, 2004 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2003 at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Interment will be held at Pajaro Valley Cemetery in California under the direction of Mehl’s Colonial Chapel, 222 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville, CA, 831-724-6371.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, TX, 399-1331.

Maria Ofelia G. Sanchez

HARLINGEN — Maria Ofelia G. Sanchez, 70, entered into rest on Friday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mrs. Sanchez was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Elizabeth Rios.

She is survived by her loving children, Gilberto (Corina) Sanchez, Jr. of Rio Hondo, TX, George (Maria) Sanchez of Sebastian, TX, Emelda (Paul) Rios of Los Fresnos, TX, Tiburcio "Butch" Sanchez of Harlingen, TX, Juan Jose Sanchez of Harlingen, TX, Jose Angel (Thelma) Sanchez of Harlingen, TX; 21 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, sisters, Petra Gomez of Rio Hondo, TX, Cirilda G. Tovar of Sebastian, TX and numerous other family members. Visitation will be held today, Monday, March 29, 2004 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 9:15 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Catholic funeral service at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Rio Hondo, TX with Deacon Genaro Ibarra as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery in Harlingen, TX.

Pallbearers will be Juan Jose Sanchez, Jr., John David Sanchez, Luis Roberto Sanchez, Lionel Sanchez, Carlos Rodriguez, Jr., Veronica Sanchez, Roxanna Sanchez and Sonia Alyssa Sanchez.

Mrs. Sanchez was employed for over 20 years with T.S.T.C. in the Food Service Department. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.
