Celia Esparza Garcia

SAN BENITO, TX — Celia Esparza Garcia, 91, was born in El Ranchito, TX to Don Jose Esparza and Virginia Maria R. Esparza on April 8th, 1913.

She passed away on to the Lord on March 28th 2004 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Harlingen, TX. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Emiliano Garcia.

Celia is survived by one sister, Natalia Trevino and daughters Virginia Maria (JJ) Segura, Perfidia Garcia and her son Joe F. (Enedina) Garcia. One daughter Jo Ann (Ricardo I) Vasquez. 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Celia comes from a pioneer family from El Ranchito and moved into San Benito upon her marriage. She was very active throughout her life, involving herself in local politics for numerous candidates, was a member of Sacred Heart Society and participated in her self owned grocery store "Emiliano’s".

She will be greatly missed by her loved ones as she was continuously surrounded by all of those whom she loved.

There will be a rosary held tonight (Tuesday) at 7 P.M. at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel. Church services will be Wednesday March 31, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Benito. Burial will follow at Esparza Cemetery in El Ranchito.

Pallbearers will be Efren Matamoros, Jr., Joe Henry Velarde, Orlando Jesus Velarde, Joe Federico Velarde, Jr., Eddie Balli, and Ricardo I. Vasquez.

Services are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home 701 N. Bowie San Benito 399-9992.

Erwin W. Scott, Jr.

LOS FRESNOS, TX — Erwin W. Scott, JR, 78 of Los Fresnos,  Texas entered the eternal kingdom of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center in the loving embrace of his family. He was born on April 2, 1925 in Houston,  Texas to Erwin W. Scott, Sr. and Ione Smith Scott. He was a leader in the community of Los Fresnos, and many other areas.

He is survived by his wife Guadalupe V. Scott of Los Fresnos, and brother Winston M. Scott of Houston, TX.

He is preceded in death by his parents Erwin W. and Ione S. Scott, and sister Florence S. Atkinson.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic church of Los Fresnos,  Texas and a rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 the mass will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. with Father Joe Villalon officiating.

Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Services are under the direction of Thomae – Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito,  Texas 78586, (9560399-1331.

Magdaleno V. Lozano

SAN BENITO, TX — Magdaleno V. Lozana, 83, passed away at Harlingen Medical Center, on March 27, 2004.

He is survived by his wife; Teodora C. Limon. Seven sons; Magdaleno (Concepcion) Limon Jr., of San Benito, TX., Gerardo (Gloria) Limon, of Gibsonburg, Ohio, Jose Hilario (Alma) Limon of San Benito, TX., Jaime (Linda) Limon of Dallas, TX., Luis Limon of Dallas, TX., Gilberto Limon of Dallas, TX., Ricardo Limon of San Benito, TX. Three daughters Gloria L. (Claudio) Zavala, of San Benito, TX., Irma (Basilio) Limon, of Dallas, TX., Ida L. (Joe) Cruz, of Harlingen, TX. 19 grandchildren & 30 great-grandchildren, several nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his daughter; Teodora Limon.

Visitation will be held 12-9 PM Tuesday, March 30, 2004 with a prayer services to begin 7 PM at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, 956-399-1331.

Maria M. Estrada

HARLINGEN, TX — Maria M. Estrada 80, of Harlingen entered into rest Friday, March 26, 2004.

She is survived by her children; Jovita (Rodolfo) Garcia, Josie (Ramiro) Perez, Lali (Ramiro) Salinas, Jorge Estrada, Eddie (Marsha) Estrada, Steve (Lisa) Estrada, Olga Estrada, Naomi (Rick) Roby, 21 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Catarina Tello and a close family friend, Luptia Alvarado.

She is preceded in death by her husband; Leocadio Estrada and two sons; Isidor and David Estrada.

Visitation was held Saturday, March 27, 2004 from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service held at 7:00 pm. Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 28, 2004 at 2:30 pm at Valley Baptist Church located at 1926 La Paloma in Harlingen with Pastor Andres Rangel officiating. Interment followed at Combes Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her grandsons Rudy Garcia, Ray Garcia, David Salinas, Darrell Salinas, Eric Estrada and Andrew Estrada.

Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Sybil Mae Wood

LULING, TX — Sybil M. Wood, 81 passed away Sunday, March 21, 2004 surrounded by her loving family.

Sybil was born in Satin,  Texas on August 10, 1922 to Chester and Uneeta Campbell.

She was a wonderful beautician, wife, homemaker and Mother. She enjoyed being with her family and friends.

She loved watching humming birds and would "break the ice" in the winter for the other birds so they could enjoy the birdbath.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 47 years, P.H. "Buddy" Wood and their son Douglas R. Wood.

Her son, Larry Wood of Austin; daughter, Judy Macek and husband, Steve of Corpus Christi; daughter, Donna Holmes and husband Matt of Bastrop survive Sybil.

Grandchildren include Scott Wood, Montreal Canada; Neal Wood, Cedar Park,  Texas; Ross and  Taylor Macek of Corpus Christi,  Texas. Sybil is also survived by her brother, Lester Campbell and wife, Lavonne of Bossier City, La.

She had numerous relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at Luling City Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of Sybil’s life will follow at City Market Bar B Que on Main Street in Luling at 2:00 p.m.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Charles Mathis, Dr. Jairo Bermudez and Dr. Robert Duran of Central  Texas Medical Center in San Marcos, for their kind, respectful and loving care of Sybil and her family. Also, a special thank you goes out to the ICU nurses that cared for Sybil for 13 days.

The family so much appreciated Central  Texas Medical Center’s Chaplain, Merlin D. Starr for his unselfish support during this difficult time.

Lucille Z. Martin

MERCEDES, TX — Lucille Z. Martin, 69, passed away at Comfort House, McAllen, TX, on March 28, 2004. A native Texan born in Glaveston, Lucille was a journeyman printer and lifelong member of International Typographical Union.

Lucille is survived by her daughter, Denise (John) Bownds Kaplan of San Leandro, CA ; her mother, Lily G. Adams of  Texas City, TX ; great-aunts, Jessie Lee Mann of  Texas City, TX and Betty Gutierrez of Dickinson, TX ; nieces, Pamela (Reza) Ghanaati of Norman,OK and Maile (Si) Weeks of Premont, TX and several other nieces and a nephew. She also leaves behind her faithful feline companion, Peaches.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Martin and her brother, Pete Zinante.

A memorial service is planned for April 17, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. at Llano Grande Lake Park, Mercedes, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations to Casa del Consuelo/Comfort House, 617 Dallas Ave., McAllen, TX 78501-2752 are requested.

Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes was in charge of arrangements.

Aracelia G. Senteno

HARLINGEN, TX — Mrs. Aracelia G. Senteno, 67, of Harlingen, entered into eternal rest at her residence on Monday, March 29, 2004. Born in Brownsville on September 27, 1936, she attended and graduated from Villa Maria High School.

Mrs Senteno is survived by her husband Arturo Senteno; her daughters- Mary Alice Lambert (Joe), Sylvia Senteno, Belinda Senteno and Lisa Loya (Joe); two grandchildren – Russell Lambert and Holly Lambert; four sisters – Amparo Gavito, Alida Lavios, Alicia Armendariz and Alma Gomez and one brother – Jose Antonio Gomez.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 31, 2004 in the Darling-Mouser Funeral Home chapel, 945 Palm Blvd., Brownsville,  Texas.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 p.m. tonight in the funeral home chapel. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, April 1, 2004 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard, Brownsville. There will be no procession from the funeral home to the church. Everyone is to meet at the church.

Interment will be at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.

Pallbearers will be James Armendariz, Michael Armendariz, Ricky Cardenas, Al Gavito, Joe Lavios and Eddie Padron.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Homer Aguilar. Mr. Renato Cardenas, Dr. John Dieck, Mr. Gene Moody, Mr. Ray Riojas and Mr. Neal Simmons.

Mrs. Senteno’s family wishes to thank all her family and friends who gave their kindness, support and prayers during these past few months. She will be remembered most for her generous spirit. She was always respectful of other’s dignity and never turned away from those in need.

Erwin W. Scott, Jr.

LOS FRESNOS, TX — Erwin W. Scott, Jr. (Scottie), 78, entered into eternal heavenly rest on Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center.

He was born on April 2, 1925 in Houston ,  Texas. Scottie was a resident of Los Fresnos for most of his life.

He served in the United States Army as a Para-Trooper in Troop 517 during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart. He was the Tax Assesor/Business Manager for the Los fresnos CISD for 35 years, as well as a board member for South  Texas ISD for 34 years. He also served on several committees and belonged to many councils, such as: The Boy Scouts of America Rio Grande Council, Where he was the recipient of numerous awards, 1964 – The Paisano Award for International Scouting. 1971 – The Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service, and the 2002 Golden Beaver Award, this award was presented to Scottie for being an active recipient of the Silver Beaver Award for over 25 years of service in the scouting program. Also, a member of the Water District No. 6 Board, Harlingen Elks Club, Dolly Vinsant Hospital Board, Confederate Air Force Life Member #3, Cameron County Appraisal District and Volunteer FireFighter in Los Fresnos, Tx.

He is survived by: His wife: Guadalupe (Pana) V. Scott, Los Fresnos, Tx. His Brother: Winston M. (Cissy) Scott, Houston, Tx. And A close family friend: Zulema Rendon, Los Fresnos, Tx. And numerous family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, Erwin W., and Ione Scott and sister, Florence S. Atkinson.

The funeral will be held today, Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, and interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park, where he will be honored by the American Legion Post 43 of Brownsville,  Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Rio Grande Valley Boy Scouts of America at 6912 W. Expressway 83, Harlingen,  Texas 78552 or to The St. Cecilia Catholic Church Building fund at 606 W. Ocean Boulevard, Los Fresnos,  Texas 78566.

Pallbearers will be Marvin E. Huckle, Joe Atkinson, Pat Wm. Liston, Robert Mack Miller, D.W. Grant, and David Garza. Serving as Honorary will be his brothers in law: Vicente Vicinaiz, Miguel Vicinaiz, Jesus Vicinaiz, Adalberto Vicinaiz, Gil Vicinaiz, Guadalupe V. Gonzalez, Ron Schraer, and many nephews.

Special thanks to Dr. William H. Heins for always being there throughout the years.

Jesus Hilario Jimenez, Jr.

EL RANCHITO, TX — Jesus Hilario "Gordo" Jimenez, Jr. 29 of El Ranchito,  Texas entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 29, 2004 in Villa Cavazos,  Texas. He was born on June 27, 1974 in San Benito,  Texas to Janie, and Jesus Hilario Jimenez, Sr.

He is survived by the following: His mother: Janie Luna of South Houston,  Texas. 2 daughters: Odelia George and Karina George both of San Benito,  Texas. 4 sons: Jesus Hilario Jimenez, III of El Ranchito,  Texas, Juan Munoz of Florida, Nicolas Gonzalez of Harlingen,  Texas, Isaac Nino of San Benito,  Texas. Paternal Grandparents: Hilario and Ruby Jimenez of San Benito,  Texas. 2 brothers: Bonifacio Cain Luna and Esteban Raul Mondragon both of South Houston,  Texas. 10 aunts, and uncles.

Pallbearers will be: Cain Luna, Esteban Raul Mondragon, Jose Manuel Luna, Albert Barrientos, Jr., Robert Abrego, Jr., Carlos Abrego, and A.J. Abrego, Jr. Visitation will begin on Wednesday, March 31,2004 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be held at 7:00 p.m. in the North Chapel.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 1, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ignacio Catholic Church in El Ranchito,  Texas, and interment will follow to the Abrego Family Cemetery in El Ranchito,  Texas.

Services have been entrusted to the loving care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito,  Texas 78586 (956) 399-1331.

Kenneth L. Fairchild Jr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Mr., Fairchild died on Thursday March 18, 2004 in Reynosa, Mexico at the age of 52. He was a resident of Harlingen,  Texas and a native of Lottie, LA. He was a teacher for La Feria Independent School District.

Mr. Fairchild is survived by his mother Ethelyn Fairchild of Lottie; two daughters, Anarka Fairchild of San Antonio,  Texas and Kyra Fairchild of Harlingen,  Texas; brother, John E. Fairchild and wife Dana of Port Allen; niece, Ashley Fairchild and nephew, Brogan Fairchild.

He is preceded in death by father, Kenneth "Buck" Fairchild.

He was buried in Cotton Wood Cemetery on Monday, March 22, 2004.
