Nancy Shofner Kane

HARLINGEN — Nancy Shofner Kane, born October 10, 1934 in Aurora, Illinois, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2004 at home in Harlingen,  Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Troyce Shofner (1984) and granddaughter, Nancy Camille Kinlund (2002).

Nancy is survived by her husband, Tom Kane; by her daughter, Vicki Shofner Kinzler (Dennis) and granddaughters, Patia and Hilary, all of Garland,  Texas; daughter, Becky Shofner Kinlund (Neal) of San Marcos,  Texas; brother, Tom McArdle of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Janice Labar (Wayne) of Harlingen,  Texas. She is also survived by Tom’s daughters, Colleen Kane Albury (Stanley), Kelly Kane Roberts (Henry), and son, Terry Kane; by Tom’s grandchildren, Lee Ann and Joseph Albury, Tracy and Phillip Roberts and Hilary Kane, all of Harlingen,  Texas.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery with the Reverend David Reed of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to Valley Baptist Medical Center - Sandi Jo Funk Hospice or your favorite charity.

Bette Lyman Ohlemacher

HARLINGEN, TX — Bette Lyman Ohlemacher, age 81, of Harlingen, TX, died unexpectedly and peacefully on April 20, 2004.

Preceded in death by her husbands, Phillip R. Lyman and Dorne P. Ohlemacher.

Bette is survived by four children: Sue Baldwin of Stillwater, MN; Doug (Karen) Lyman of Leawood, KS; Brad (Wendy Matheisen) Lyman of Boulder Creek, CA; and Brian (Traci) Lyman of Alpharetta, GA. In addition, she has 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 8 stepchildren.

Bette lived in the Rio Grande Valley after moving from the Kansas City area iin 1975. While living there, she was a Real Estate Broker and an active member of the Harlingen Country Club where she was an avid golfer.

A celebration of Bette’s life will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Hope at Mount Moriah Cemtery, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64141. (816) 942-2004

Dora Dell Cook Mathews

NORMAN, OK — Dora Dell Cook Mathews, 82, formerly of Norman,  Oklahoma, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Hugh Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Norman I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Mrs. Mathews was born January 18, 1922 in Greenville,  Texas, to James F. and Lucy (Bell) Cook. She was a longtime resident of Norman before moving to Harlingen,  Texas in 1986. She recently moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. Dora was married for sixty-one years to Ted P. Mathews. She was actively involved in community service, volunteering for the Cerebral Palsy Center in Norman and as a Reading Mentor for Harlingen Public Schools in  Texas. She was a member of both the Norman and Harlingen Golf and Country Clubs, and the Town and Country Garden Club in Norman. Dora loved playing bridge and golf. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harlingen, TX and the First Christian Church in Norman.

Mrs. Mathews was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Ted, of the home; son, Richard Cook Mathews and wife, Erin, of Dallas, TX; daughter, Lucy Ann Mathews Vaught and husband, Gary, of Indianapolis, IN; sister, Claudine Ibbotson of Abilene, TX; two grandsons, Grant Mathews Vaught and wife, Lindy Rae, of Indianapolis, IN and Travis Hayden Mathews of Dallas, TX; great-grandson, Logan Lane Vaught; and nephew, Timothy Ibbotson of Abilene, TX.

Guadalupe T. Longoria

DONNA — Guadalupe T. Longoria, 69, passed away on Friday, April 23, 2004 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

She was born on December 11, 1934 in Matamoros, Mexico to Pedro and Andreita (Pedraza) Tienda.

She is survived by her loving husband, Conrado Longoria of Donna; her children Faustino T. Cano of Houston,  Texas, Elva (Rene) Escamilla of Weslaco, Jacinto (Rosie) Cano of Dallas,  Texas, Esmeralda (Oscar) Martinez of Bryan,  Texas, Andrea Longoria (Roel de la Cruz) of Donna, Irene Longoria (Isaac Rivera) of Corpus Christi,  Texas and Virginia Longoria (Hipolito Rosel) of Weslaco. Also surviving are her grandchildren; Sonia, Joe, Sally, David, Lupita and Jr. Cano; Becky, Antonio and Randy Escamilla; Peter, Mike, Christina and Daniel Cano: Odella, Josie and Debbie Silva; Lena and Isaac Martinez; Giovanna and Samantha de la Cruz; Ernie Carreon; Nicolette and Cheyenne Trujillo; 23 great-grandchildren and her aunt, Vica Tienda of Florida.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, April 25, 2004 from 3 to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m., at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 26, 2004 at 2 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco. Officiating at the service will be Deacon Jesse Aguayo of St. Pius X Catholic Church of Weslaco.

Interment will follow at Weslaco City Cemetery in Weslaco.

Serving as pallbearers will be Faustino Cano, Jacinto Cano, Roel de la Cruz, Rene Escamilla, Isaac Rivera, Hipolito Rosel, Randy Rene Escamilla and Oscar Martinez.

Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Ernie Carreon, Jr.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Herminio Cantu

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Herminio (Herman) R. Cantu, 87, passed away at Valley Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, April 27, 2004. He was born in San Benito and lived in San Benito and Brownsville until 1960 when the family moved to El Paso. In 1986, Herman returned to Brownsville where he lived until his death.

Mr. Cantu was a Lieutenant during World War II having been stationed in Japan. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was involved with the Knights of Columbus for many years. He was a District Deputy and a Grand Knight.

He was a mentor with the HOSTS program at Gonzalez Elementary for 10 years.

Mr. Cantu is survived by his wife of 16 years, Juanita V. Cantu; and his three children, Irma (Rocco) Noe of El Paso,  Texas, Diane Cantu of Austin and Arnold Cantu of Phoenix, Arizona.

He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Nicki, Rocco, Jr., Mark, Kristine, Arnold, Jr. and Matthew. He is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cantu was preceded in death by his first wife, Nina; his son, Richard Cantu; and his parents, Nicolas and Ignacia Cantu; his brothers, Nicolas, Emiliano, Roberto; and his sisters, Ignacia Cordova and Katy Cantu.

Recitation of the holy rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m., tonight, Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd.

Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m., tomorrow, Thursday, April 28, 2004 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

The procession will depart from the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be held at the Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens. military rites will be conducted at graveside by members of the VFW Post 2035 Funeral Honor Guard under the direction of Chaplain Paul H. Spell.

Pallbearers will be members of his family and the Knights of Columbus.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd., 546-7111.

Jacob M. Mendez

HARLINGEN, TX — Jacob Manuel Mendez, 19, entered into rest on Saturday, April 24, 2004. Jacob was born on September 19, 1984 in San Benito, TX.

He attended Rio Hondo High School, where he was on the Rio Hondo Varsity Football and Baseball Team and the Varsity Cheerleader Squad.

He is survived by his loving parents, Manuel and Sally Mendez of Harlingen; sister, Dalia Mendez; brother-in-law, Stephen Quiroga of Harlingen; brother, Jason M. Mendez of Rio Hondo; grandmother, Lucinda F. Mendez; one niece,  Taylor Quiroga; one nephew, Austin Quiroga; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a prayer service held at 7:00 PM.

Funeral services will be held today, April 28, 2004 at 2:00 PM at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Pastor Romanita Flores officiating.

Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery in Harlingen.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Quiroga, Juan Ortega, Bodie Argullin, Nicholas Herrera, Rollen Alaniz, Eric Macias, Eddie Macias and Albert Macias, Jr. Jacob was well known throughout the community.

He will be greatly missed by many of his family and friends.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Samuel E. Capetillo

RIO HONDO, TX — Samuel Ellis Capetillo, 19, entered into the Lords heavenly kingdom Saturday, April 24, 2004 in San Antonio.

He attended Rio Hondo School and graduated in 2003. He was a member of the varsity football team. He was a loving son and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Samuel Capetillo; and his grandfather, Salvador Capetillo.

He is survived by his mother, Chris Capetillo of Rio Hondo and step father Manuel Soria of San Benito; brother, Marcos Soria and sister, Monica Soria both of Rio Hondo; maternal grandparents, Maria de Jesus Salazar of San Benito and Juan Salazar of Harlingen; paternal grandmother, Elmira Capetillo of Harlingen.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 28, 2004, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

On Thursday April 29, 2004 visitation will be at Spirit of Praise Church from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. with Pastor Mike Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow to Heavenly Grace Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ricardo Salazar, Juan Jose Rodriguez, Manuel Soria, Don Capetillo, Jr., Guadalupe Teran, Ruben Perez, Jacob Capetillo, and David Capetillo. In lieu of flowers donation can be made to Cristina Capetillo at  Texas State Bank acct. #7871066.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen, TX.

Felipe Gonzalez

SAN BENITO, TX — Felipe "Pipo" Gonzalez, age 77, died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Sunday, May 16, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center.

"Pipo" retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 29 years. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his spouse, Frances De La Fuente Gonzalez; his son, Felipe "Timmy" (Mona) Gonzalez, Jr.; his daughter, Diana (Robert) Weber; his grandchildren, Danny, Jr., Chelsea, Brenna and David Gonzalez; and his sisters, Clara G. Diaz, Mary G. Castillo and Oralia G. Gonzalez.

He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Gonzalez; his parents, Narciso and Maria Gomez Gonzalez; his brother, Narciso Jr., Eustalio "Shorty" and Jesus Gonzalez.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 20, 2004 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Brownsville at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens

Pallbearers will be Tim Gonzalez, Danny Gonzalez, Jr., Henry Delgado, Homer Garcia, Lencho De La Fuente and Al Santana. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Javier Figueroa

RIO HONDO, TX — Javier Figueroa, 52, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2004 in Rio Hondo. He was born May 5, 1952 in Las Yescas to Jesus and Maria Figueroa.

He is survived by his daughters, Esmeralda Figueroa, Jessica Figueroa, Erica A. Figueroa from Rio Hondo; grandchildren, Leanna E. Gonzalez and Jesse J. Gonzalez; sisters, Raquel (Gilberto) Diaz, Matilde (Arnoldo) Corona and Irma Figueroa and brother, Jesus (Maria Luisa) Figueroa.

Javier was preceded in death by his parents, Maria and Jesus Figueroa and two brothers, Juan Jose Figueroa and Jacinto Figueroa.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at St. Helen’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Gilbert Ray Diaz, Jaime Figueroa, Gilberto Diaz, Arnoldo Corona, Ricardo Figueroa and Jesse Gonzalez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Leon "Sonny" Wilson

HUTCHINSON, KS — Leon "Sonny" Wilson, 77, passed away May 16, 2004. He was born May 8, 1927 in Hutchinson, KS to Melvin Leroy Wilson and Ora Myree Zumalt Wilson. He was a lifetime resident of Hutchinson, wintering in La Feria,  Texas. He was a graduate of Hutchinson High School in 1945 and Founder of Wilson Water Systems.

He was a member of the Wichita Chapter #96 of Mended Hearts, Inc. He also served in the military with the Merchant Marines serving from 45-48 as a Sr. Asst. Purser.

He was married to Dorothy Knipe previously. He then married Kathaleen Sue Wolfe on May 6, 1993 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives. Other survivors include sons, Thomas Wilson and wife, Melody of Olathe, KS, Todd L. Wilson of Hutchinson, Eric Wilson and companion, Beth Sullivan of Hutchinson; sisters, Meredith Russell and husband, Ray of Milton, KS, Stephanie Jensen and husband, Tom of Wichita. He is also survived by some stepchildren; and sister, Sheryl Wilson Aune of Mission Viejo, CA.

Memorial service will be held at Elliott Chapel, Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Eldon Smith officiating.

In care of Elliott Mortuary, memorials may be sent to American Heart Association or Hospice of Reno County.

Lydia Meek

KERRVILLE, TX — Lydia Janie Burkhalter Meek, 90, of Kerrville,  Texas, formerly of Harlingen and Los Fresnos,  Texas, went to be with her Lord on Monday, May 17, 2004.

On Thursday, May 20, 2004, there will be a Family and Friend’s visitation in Harlingen at the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Graveside funeral services will be Friday, May 21, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Mont Meta Burial Park, San Benito, TX, with Rev. George Morrison and Rev. Bill Waddell presiding.

Janie was born October 18, 1913 at Dechard, Tennessee to Sarah Jane and Frank Burkhalter. Janie married Elmer Meek, May 26, 1935 and they enjoyed 67 years together, most of which were spent residing in the Bayview-Los Fresnos area. Janie was a homemaker and an accomplished China Painter Instructor.

Janie had on son, Elmer Eldon Meek who died in 1971 at the age of 33 in a farm related accident and has one daughter, Karen Measel of Beaumont, TX. Before moving to Kerrville, Janie lived at Golden Palms Retirement Center, Harlingen, enjoying many friends there. Janie will be missed greatly by her family as she was such a devoted Grandmother to all her Grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family and friends for such as a Godly woman that she was. A professing Christian, Janie served her Lord as a Bible Teacher in the First Baptist Church for over 30 years.

Survivors include daughter, Karen Measel of Beaumont; daughter-in-law, Paula Royal and spouse, Ronnie of Bandera; grandsons, Joel Meek and spouse, Christina, Mark Meek and spouse, Kim, Michael Meek and spouse, Dawsie, Preston Lamb, Kendal Lamb; granddaughters, Tina Gorsich and spouse, David and Kaleena Lamb. There are eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and one sister, Ruth Etoile Ruark of California.

Janie is preceded in death by her son, Elmer Eldon in 1971; grandson, Daniel in 1999; a great grandson, Eldon Mark in 2001 and her husband, Elmer in 2003. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice or to the Gideon Bible Society, P.O. Box 1638, Los Fresnos, TX 78566.

Local arrangements are entrusted to Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.
