Petra L. Sanchez

HARLINGEN, TX — Petra L. Sanchez, 94, passed away at Harlingen Medical Center on Tuesday, May 18, 2004.

She was a loving mother who loved arts and crafts. Petra was a friend to all that knew her and was always willing to help others. She was an active member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Valent, from Brownsville; and her son, Robert (Leticia) Sanchez from West Columbia, TX; 2 grandchildren, Jodi Sanchez and Shelby Sanchez both of Houston; 1 great-granddaughter, Mia Sanchez, Houston, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

Petra was preceded in death by her husband, Jesus Sanchez and 9 siblings.

Visitation will be held at Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2004.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 21, 2004, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garza Elizondo Funeral Home.

John E. Malmquist

CEDAR PARK, TX — John Elmer Malmquist was born in Highland Park, Illinois on September 10, 1955. He died on May 18, 2004 at Austin Hospice Christopher House of cancer.

John’s playful sense of humor was a source of joy to family and friends. He was keenly interested in history and his greatest joy came from being a fun and loving uncle to his niece and nephew. John loved to ride his motorcycle, fish, and shoot. He was a member of IBEW Local #520.

John is preceded in death by two older brothers, Eric "Gus" Malmquist and James Malmquist; father, Walter Malmquist; maternal grandparents, Don and Willie Bertholf; and paternal grandparents, Mildred and Elmer Malmquist.

He is survived by his mother, Mildred Wheeler of Cedar Park, TX; brother, Tom Malmquist of Fresno, CA; sisters, Mary Malmquist Esslinger and husband Mark and Kelly Sullivan-Garcia and husband Alan; niece and nephew, Erin and Eric Garcia, all of Cedar Park, TX; uncle, Donald Bertholf of Harlingen; and numerous cousins.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on Friday, May 21, 2004, at Cook Walden Hill Country Memorial Gardens, 14501 IH 35, Pflugerville, TX.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the many angels at Hospice Austin and Christopher House for their loving care of John and his family.

Lydia Janie Meek

KERRVILLE, TX — Lydia Janie Burkhalter Meek, 90, of Kerrville,  Texas, formerly of Harlingen and Los Fresnos,  Texas, went to be with her Lord on Monday, May 17, 2004.

On Thursday, May 20, 2004, there will be a Family and Friend’s visitation in Harlingen at the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Graveside funeral services will be Friday, May 21, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Mont Meta Burial Park, San Benito, TX, with Rev. George Morrison and Rev. Bill Waddell presiding.

Janie was born October 18, 1913 at Dechard, Tennessee to Sarah Jane and Frank Burkhalter. Janie married Elmer Meek, May 26, 1935 and they enjoyed 67 years together, most of which were spent residing in the Bayview-Los Fresnos area. Janie was a homemaker and an accomplished China Painter Instructor.

Janie had one son, Elmer Eldon Meek who died in 1971 at the age of 33 in a farm related accident and has one daughter, Karen Measel of Beaumont, TX. Before moving to Kerrville, Janie lived at Golden Palms Retirement Center, Harlingen, enjoying many friends there. Janie will be missed greatly by her family as she was such a devoted Grandmother to all her Grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family and friends for such a Godly woman that she was. A professing Christian, Janie served her Lord as a Bible Teacher in the First Baptist Church for over 30 years.

Survivors include daughter, Karen Measel of Beaumont; daughter-in-law, Paula Royal and spouse, Ronnie of Bandera; grandsons, Joel Meek and spouse, Christina, Mark Meek and spouse, Kim, Michael Meek and spouse, Dawsie, Preston Lamb, Kendal Lamb; granddaughters, Tina Gorsich and spouse, David and Kaleena Lamb. There are eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and one sister, Ruth Etoile Ruark of California.

Janie is preceded in death by her son, Elmer Eldon in 1971; grandson, Daniel in 1999; a great grandson, Eldon Mark in 2001 and her husband, Elmer in 2003.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice or to the Gideon Bible Society, P.O. Box 1638, Los Fresnos, TX 78566.

Local arrangements are entrusted to Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Steve Delgado

DALLAS, TX — Steve Delgado, 30, entered into the Lords heavenly kingdom May 16, 2004, in Dallas, TX.

He graduated from Harlingen High School in 1993. He was a member of the Airforce Jr. R.O.T.C. He lived in Dallas the past 4 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years Celia Alba Delgado; 4 daughters: Julie Alba, Ashley Nicole Delgado, Selena Delgado and Dominique Delgado all of Dallas; mother, Maria S. Delgado; brothers and sisters: Ester Rubio (Ignacio), Socorro Lopez (Antonio), Santos Jr. (Pat) Delgado, Herbert Delgado, Janie  Johnson (Dondi), Jerry Delgado (Lupita), Debbie Salazar (Raul), Jolene Delgado (Albert); numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 20, 2004, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held Friday, May 21, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church with Deacon Jesus Reyes officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen,  Texas.

Manuela Salas

HARLINGEN, TX — Manuela Salas, 95, of Harlingen, entered into rest Wednesday, May 26, 2004.

She is survived by her children, Juana Vasquez of Indiana, Margarita (William) Macswain of S. Carolina, Marcelina Rivera of Sweetwater, TX, Olivia Trevino of La Feria, Esperanza (Guadalupe) Rodriguez of Arkansas and Maria S. (Eluterio) Espinoza of Harlingen. Also surviving her are 45 grandchildren, 110 great-grandchildren, 26 great-great-grandchildren and 1 great- great-great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Cleto Salas; a son, Pedro Salas; and daughter, Lucia Mendoza.

Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace and a holy rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 28, 2004 departing at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Father Matt officiating and interment will follow at Heavenly Grace Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

John R. Flowers, Jr.

MERCEDES, TX — John Robert Flowers, Jr. was born in McDowell, Alabama on Dec. 1, 19l7 to John Robert Flowers, Sr. and Kathleen Harper Flowers. He was active in outdoor activities and lettered in varsity football at Demapolis High School where he graduated in 1935.

Seeking his fortune, he came to South  Texas in 1939 where he met and married the love of his life, Hazel Marie Anderson Flowers. They settled in Weslaco and took a position with the Marshall canning company.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, John joined the United States Marine Corp and served with distinction as a infantry platoon sergeant in the Pacific campaign including the battles of Guadalcanal, Saipan, Tinian, Tarawa and Iowa Jima where be was twice seriously wounded. Following the war, he returned to the Valley and began a career as a rural mail carrier as well as farming vegetables and raising cattle. John retired from the post office after thirty years of service, but continued to work in the field of agriculture as an inspector for the  Texas Dept. of Agriculture and The South  Texas Onion and Melon Committee. John and Hazel were very active long time members of First Baptist Church in Weslaco. John also served for twelve years on the Weslaco Board of Education and served several times as President.

They had recently moved to Monte Christo Ranch to be near their children where he passed away on Monday May 24th. following a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hazel Marie Anderson Flowers, Sherian Flowers Bernhard of Dallas, John R. Flowers III (Ruchie) of Sweeny,  Texas, Jud Flowers (Margie) of Edinburg and Jeff Flowers (Annie) of Weslaco as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Weslaco on Friday May 28th, at 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be served in the fellowship hall followed by internment at Highland Memorial Park at 2:15 p.m. military Services are under the direction of the United States Marine Color Guard of Harlingen,  Texas.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First Baptist Church, 600 So. Kansas, Weslaco,  Texas.

Guadalupe M. Armendáriz

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Guadalupe Maynes Armendáriz was called to our Lord Wednesday, May 26, 2004.

He was a loving and caring father, as well as a faithful Presbyterian Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Rev. Armendáriz was born December 18, 1904 in San Carlos, Chihuahua, Mexico. Together with his parents and siblings, he migrated to the United States of America in 1913. He attended Lydia Patterson Institute in El Paso and graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (APTS) in Austin. Rev. Armendáriz was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in 1931 at The Mexican Presbyterian Church (Memorial) in San Marcos,  Texas. He served pastorates in Galveston, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Dallas and San Benito,  Texas; San Bernardino and Coachella, California and Phoenix and Flagstaff, Arizona. These churches represented four Presbyterian denominations that included The Presbyterian Church US, The United Presbyterian Church, The National Presbyterian Church of Mexico and The Presbyterian Church (USA), from which he was Honorably Retired. Rev Armendáriz’ ministry was recognized by receiving the Distinguished Alumnus Award from APTS in 1986. In addition to his devotion to his ministry, Rev. Armendáriz had a passion for music that he enthusiastically shared with his family and in his retirement years devoted time to making and playing violins. Rev. Armendáriz was preceded in death by his loving wife and partner in ministry, Hermelinda Pacillas Armendáriz; his parents Serapio and Encarnación Armendáriz and ten siblings.

He is survived by his brother Rev. Rubén M. Armendáriz of Houston, TX and his eight children: Hermelinda Hernandez of Houston, TX; Rubén P. Armendáriz and his wife Dr. Cynthia Díazde León of San Antonio, TX; Josué P. Armendáriz and his wife Mary Ann of Hitchcock, TX; Bernice Cole of Indianapolis, IN; Helen Zapata and her husband Daniel of Scottsdale, AZ; Benjamin P. Armendáriz and his wife Helen of Austin, TX; Dr. Efraim P. Armendáriz and his wife Edna of Austin, TX; and Dina Armendáriz of Fraizer Park CA. He is also survived by 31 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren and long time family friends Jesus and Celia Plata and their family of San Benito, TX.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 o’clock to 9 o’clock at Porter Loring. WITNESS TO THE RESURRECTION SERVICE, SATURDAY, MAY 29TH – 3:00 P.M. at the COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 211 RODETO DR., SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS the Rev. Dr. Cecil L. Lang, Jr. officiating.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE, SUNDAY, MAY 30TH – 2:00 P.M., GALVESTON MEMORIAL PARK Cemetery, HITCHCOCK, TEXAS with the Rev. Rubén P. Armendáriz officiating.

Pallbearers: Alfred Hernandez, Richard Hernandez, Joel Armendáriz, Julian Armendáriz, Joshua Armendáriz, Daniel Zapata, Michael Cole, Matthew Armendáriz, Paul Armendáriz and Greg Rader.

Maria Luisa Garcia

SAN BENITO, TX — Maria Luisa Garcia, 48, of San Benito,  Texas entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born on August 20, 1955 in Brownsville,  Texas.

She was a member of Valley Christian Assembly Church, and was previously employed with the Harlingen C.I.S.D. for over 18 years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Rogerio Garcia, Sr.

She is survived by the following: mother, Manuela F. Garcia, San Benito, TX; 3 sisters, Guadalupe Soto, San Benito, Juanita Garcia, San Benito, TX, and Idalia Garcia, San Benito, TX; 4 brothers, Ramiro Garcia, Alvin, TX, Jose Luis Garcia, Sr., Adrian, Michigan, Rogerio Garcia, Jr., San Benito, TX, and Martin Garcia, Sr., Alvin, TX; numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Danny Dial, Jose Luis Garcia, Jr., Martin Garcia, Jr., Christopher Garcia, Rogerio Garcia, Jr., and Martin Garcia, Sr.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 4, 2004 with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. in the North Chapel.

Her funeral service will be Conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at The Valley Christian Assembly Church located at 32128 FM 2520 in San Benito,  Texas with Pastor Armando Escamilla officiating.Interment will then follow to the Garcia Family Cemetery in El Ranchito,  Texas.

Funeral services are under the direction of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors.

Harriett Dick

HARLINGEN, TX — Harriett June Hughes-Dick, 80, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2004 at Angel Care Home Health in Harlingen,  Texas.

Harriett was born on June 11, 1923 in Lansing Michigan. She was former resident of Traverse City, MI and Lessburg, FL.

Survivors include daughter, Patricia E. Coveyou (Lawrence); son, Francis J. Hughes (JoAnn); granddaughter and caregiver, Kimberly Lura Hopkins (Thomas); great grandchildren, Thomas Lawrence Christopher and Zachary Logan Hopkins; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and brother and sisters.

Visitation hours will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., Friday, June 4, 2004, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. Burial services will be held in Michigan at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Harlingen Dialysis Center or the American Heart Association.

The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Brajesh Bhatla, Dr. Abraham Cano, Dr. Rolando Ascarrunz, and Valley Baptist Medical Center; especially the nurses and staff on 3rd floor East.

MERCEDES, TX — Jose Hernandez, 68, passed away Wednesday night at his residence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vicente and Maria Gutierrez Hernandez; and two brothers, Daniel and Jesus Hernandez.

He is survived by his wife, Elida M. Hernandez of Mercedes; four sons, Vicenrte (Cynthia) Hernandez of Mercedes, Jose (Mary) Hernandez, Jr., of McAllen, Sergio (Thelma) "Checo" Hernandez of La Feria, and Jose Luis (Marisa) Banuelos of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico; two daughters, Nora (Ruben) Rios and Maria Margarita Hernandez both of Mercedes. Also surviving is one brother, Ignacio Hernandez of Mercedes; and five sisters, Josefina V. Hernandez of Riverside, CA, Rosa H. De Leon of Santa Paula, CA, Maria Elena H. Celedon of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, Berna H. Balderas of Riverside, CA and Marta H. De La Rosa of Selma, Oregon; 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Mercedes. Burial will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes.

Pallbearers will be Roque R. Silva, Brian K. Hernandez, Ruben Rios, Jr., Vicente Hernandez, Jose Hernandez, Jr. and Ruben Rios, Sr.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home.

Charolette L. Steinman

HARLINGEN, TX — Charolette Lucy Steinman, 59, passed away Monday, May 31, 2004 at Sunshine Haven Home Health Care in Olmito. Charolette was born on March 7, 1945 in Lyford,  Texas to Thomas and Charolette Youngblood.

She was a Secretary with Pittman & Davis for many years. She was also a member of the Spirit of Praise Church in Harlingen.

Survivors include her sons, William Arend Steinman and Charles David Steinman.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Sullivan officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations are made to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Program.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
