Rosemary Villarreal

HARLINGEN, TX — With family and friends at her side, sharing memories, praying the Rosary and listening to songs she loved, Rosemary Villarreal passed quietly into everlasting peace on July 1, 2004. Her love of life and faith in God were an inspiration.

Born to Lazaro Alvarez and Rosita Martinez Alvarez on November 30, 1938, Rosemary spent her childhood with her parents and six siblings, Roy, Dorita, Joe, Olga, Guadalupe and Arnaldo at their home near the corner of Tyler and F streets in Harlingen.

Rosemary married Florencio Villarreal on August 2, 1957 and started a family with two children, Olga Diana and David. While Florencio was in the Air Force, the young Villarreal family lived overseas, in France and Germany. During this time, Rosemary was active in the Air Force NCO club, organizing parties, stage productions and other events for Air Force families. Planning events would become a lifelong passion for Rosemary. Returning to the homeland, the Villarreals lived briefly in Mississipi and Florida.

The family returned to Harlingen and once again, Rosemary became active in her community and continued her passion of organizing events. As President of the Catholic War Veterans Women’s Auxiliary, she organized the annual Catholic War Veteran’s Sweetheart Dance and other special events for the organization. She became well-known as an event organizer. Rosemary helped many friends and family members plan weddings, bridal showers and baby showers. She also had a special gift for telling stories in a unique and interesting way, and used that gift for writing event articles for the Valley Morning Star society page.

Although illness slowed her down during the last 14 years of her life, she did not let it stop her. She defied her illness with vigor and lived her life with more spirit than most healthy people. She organized a Rosary Group that met each week at her home for the last 14 years, and continued to plan events until - literally - the last days of her life.

Rosemary is survived by her two loving children, David (Martha) and Olga Diana; nine grandchildren, Eloy, Veronica, Florencito, Ashley, Eric, Vanessa Leigh, Ruben David, Laura Nicole, Jennifer; her sister, Olga (Benny) Canas of San Benito and brother, Arnaldo (Adela) Alvarez of Houston, and Hector (Sara) Alvarez of Harlingen, and her "Manito", Margarito Ledesma.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Florencio, her sister, Dorita, three brothers, Roy Lerma, Jose Angel Alvarez, Guadalupe Alvarez and sister-in-law, Emita Lerma.

Yes, Rosemary loved life - and loved to celebrate life. She also had a strong faith in God. We will miss her very much. But we know she is in a beautiful place, probably planning her first heavenly social event. May God Bless You, Rosemary Villarreal - the angels will adore you.

Visitation will be held today, Friday, July 2, 2004 from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen.
