Leopoldo Longoria

SAN BENITO, TX — Mr. Leopoldo "Polo" Longoria, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 2, 2004 at River Crest Nursing Center in San Marcos,  Texas.

Our Daddy Leopoldo "Polo" Longoria was born December 29, 1926 in Carrizitos,  Texas and passed away August 2, 2004 at River Crest Nursing Center.

He is survived by his 4 children, David J. Longoria and wife, Frances from Austin,  Texas, Sylvia E. Mancillas and husband, Jaime from Kyle,  Texas, Sandra J. Reyes and husband, Antonio from Telford, Tennessee, Sally Y. Lara and husband, Alex from San Benito,  Texas. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Elida A. Longoria in June 1993.

Leopoldo Longoria served two tours in the U.S. Army during W.W. II and in the Korean War.

His children would like to say "Thanks Daddy" for teaching us the important things in life such as: Love, patience and understanding, honor and respect, good sense of humor and good sportsmanship.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 5, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services will be Friday, August 6, 2004 at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in San Benito with Deacon Benito Flores officiating. Interment will be at Gomez Cemetery in Carrizitos,  Texas with military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 205 and VFW Post 2410.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.

Librada Alaniz

HARLINGEN, TX — Librada Alaniz, 69, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ August 5, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center.

She was a lifetime resident of Harlingen and a member of C.E.M. Church.

Survived by Two children: Jose Jesus (Martha) Alaniz of Harlingen, Christina (Joe) Morin of Austin, TX; Five Sisters: Andrea (Rafael) Saenz of Harlingen, Irene Hernandez (Inocencio+) of San Benito, Juanita (Raul) Botello, Maria Antonia (Dale) De La Rosa, (Jose Antonio) Gloria Perales all of Harlingen; One brother: Gerardo (Minerva) Lozano of Rio Hondo. She is also survived by (7) seven Grandchildren, (5) five Great-Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Prayer Services were held August 6, 2004 at 7:00 PM.

Funeral Services will be held today, August 7, 2004 at 10:00 AM at Centro Evangelistico Catherdal de Fe located at 2102 Teege Rd, Harlingen with Pastor Jose Cervantes officiating.

Interment will follow at Mont-Meta Memorial Park Cemetery, San Benito.

Active pallbearers will be Joe Morin, Jose A. Perales, Gerardo Lozano Jr., Jesse Alaniz III, Eloy Flores, and Jose Antonio Perales Jr.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F Street, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Eula Horton

HARLINGEN, TX — Eula Fern Horton, 81, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center. Eula was born on August 27, 1922 in Forrestburg,  Texas to James C. and Emma Laura McGee Hudspeth.

She has been a resident of Harlingen for over 40 years and was a Life Master at Bridge.

Eula was preceded in death by her husband, Lt Col USAF Jack O. Horton, who taught at Harlingen High School for over 30 years.

Survivors are sons, John (Cathy) Horton and Jack (Mary) Horton; sisters, Donnie (Bob) Martin, Lois Smith, and Ruth Taylor; grandsons, Matt and  Taylor Horton; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dearest friends at Camelot Retirement Community.

Private memorial services will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Antonio Salas

LOS FRESNOS, TX — Antonio Salas, 78, of Los Fresnos,  Texas entered the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 5, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Salas was a resident of Los Fresnos, since 1940 and he worked for Ag-Air for over 25 years.

He is survived by: wife, Maria N. Salas, Los Fresnos,  Texas; 3 daughters, Rosa Rendon, Los Fresnos,  Texas, Maria Avila, LaPorte,  Texas, and Reyna Vasquez, Dallas,  Texas; 5 sons, Eulogio Rivas, San Antonio,  Texas, Juan Salas, Los Fresnos,  Texas, Leonzo Salas, Los Fresnos,  Texas, Jose Salas,  Oklahoma, and Guadalupe Salas, Los Fresnos,  Texas; 24 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Martin Salas, Santa Catarina, San Luis Potosi, Mex.; 1 sister, Gregoria Salas, Santa Catarina, San Luis Potosi, Mex.

Pallbearers will be: Eulogio Rivas, Leonzo Salas, Jose Salas, Guadalupe Salas, Juan Salas, and Rudy Ramirez.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the North Chapel, the funeral procession will depart at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. funeral service at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Los Fresnos, with interment to follow at Los Cuates Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito, TX.

Maria C. Arellano

HARLINGEN, TX — Maria C. Arellano, 81, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004.

She is survived by her loving husband, Antonio Arellano; godson, Serafin and Irene Doria.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Garza Elizondo Funeral Home.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 with Deacon Juan Valenzuela as celebrant.

Interment will follow at Restlawn Cemetery in La Feria,  Texas.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garza Elizondo Funeral Home.

Israel Cardenas, Sr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Israel Cardenas Sr, passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2004.

He will be dearly missed by his family friends and all who’s lives he touched.

Israel was born March 8, 1930 in Santa Rosa,  Texas, to Felipe and Josefa Cardenas, and is also preceded in death by two brothers, Rodolfo and Miguel; one grandson, Jonathan Cantu.

He is survived by two sons, Israel Cardenas Jr. of Columbus, Ohio and Ismael Cardenas of Combes. Three Daughters, Irma Cardenas of Harlingen, Isabel Cardenas of La Feria, Imelda (Omar) Ybarra of Mercedes. Six Grandchildren: Christy Jewel Cardenas, Cindy Marie Aguilar, Veronica Aguilar, Frances Aguilar, Jason Edward Cardenas, and Jacob Cantu. Three Great-Grandchildren: Mariah Vera, Armando Vera, Ethan Seth Sanchez.

Three brothers: Alberto Cardenas, Felipe Cardenas Jr. and Esequiel Cardenas.

Three Sisters: Esther Cisneros, Guadalupe Lerma, and Eufemia Olivarez.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday August 10th and 11th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service to be held on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

All Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Colleen Durrenberger

DONNA / GOLIAD — Colleen Durrenberger, 66, passed away on August 9, 2004 at La Bahia Health Care Center in Goliad.

Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, August 10, 2004 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel Weslaco.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Val Verde Memorial Gardens in Donna.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Librado "Lee" Ramos

SUGARLAND / SAN BENITO, TX — Mr. Librado "Lee" Ramos, went to be with the Lord Sunday, August 8, 2004 at Methodist Hospital in Sugarland,  Texas.

Mr. Ramos was born October 30, 1934 to Benito and Calixtra Ramos in San Benito,  Texas. He was a retired Butcher.

He is survived by his wife, Gracie Ramos of Sugarland,  Texas; son, Benito Ramos; daughters, Teresa Saldivar and Martha Atkinson; and 3 grandchildren, Samantha, Nicholas and Katy; brother and sisters, Gilberto Ramos, Virginia Meza and Gloria Serna.

Mr. Ramos was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Daniel Ramos; and a sister, Elva Ramos.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Benito with Father Ignacio "Nacho" Luna officiating.

Interment will be at El Calaboz Cemetery in El Calaboz,  Texas.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.

Jose L. Alexandre

SAN BENITO, TX — Jose Luis Alexandre, 78, after a courageous battle with cancer succumbed to the will of the Lord.

Mr. Alexandre, born May 30, 1926, to Mr. and Mrs. Francisco Alexandre, Baytown,  Texas. He lived in San Benito for over fifty years where he opened a business downtown, "Alexandre’s Fine Jewelry".

The door was always open to the community, friends, family and his legacy will continue.

Mr. Alexandre,where he lived and experienced the American dream, owned a successful business, built his own home and laid a solid foundation for his family.

All people knew Mr. Alexandre for his unparalleled work ethic, and his relentless will to succeed.

A loving father and husband, a man of his integrity, values, responsibility and who was a role model for his family.

He encouraged his family to stay in touch with the needs of the community and stay involved.

Mr. Alexandre’s close friends and family will remember him for his uncanny ability to have great knowledge about all sports especially baseball.

A man with an endearing love for competition and always up for the challenge.

Mr. Alexandre is survived by his wife, Petra Alexandre; his sons, Jose Luis (Yolanda) Alexandre, Jr., and his children, Vanessa and Jose Luis III, Roberto Alexandre and his children, Roberto Jr. and Frank Tomas, Gilbert (Yolanda) Aguirre and his children, Gilbert Jr., Rene and Ysenia; and his daughters, Mary Alexander (Delfin F.) Hernandez and her children, Yvette Marie Ybarra and Andrew Alexander Ybarra, Gracie (Roberto) Villalobos and her children, Armando Roberto Villalobos, Alexander Alexandre I, SP4 Jose Luis Alexandre Villalobos (In Iraq), Laura and Rosa Maria, Mary Alice (Ramiro) Leal and her children, Mitchell and Diego, Yolanda (Timothy) Moon and her child, Jackie Moon, Aurora (Reynaldo) Avila and her children, Reynaldo Jr., Peter, Patricia, Terry, and Jose Luis.

He is also survived by his brothers, Jesus Raul (Tere) Alexander, Francisco (Amelia) Alexander and Jorge (Aurora) Alexander and his sister, Gloria Alexander.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, James Lambert.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, August 12, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.

Lara Powell

HARLINGEN, TX — Lara Dyanne Powell, 26, died August 6, 2004, in Galveston,  Texas.

She is survived by her son, Tristan Powell of Harlingen; her brother, Sagan Powell of Albuquerque, NM; her parents, David Powell of Harlingen and Kathryn Watkins of Albuquerque; and her grandmother, Wilma Powell; and her grandparents, Ralph and Mary Alice Powell.

Lara was born on January 9, 1978, in Harlingen and attended St. Albans Elementary School, Memorial Junior High and Harlingen High School, where she excelled in swimming.

She received a B.S. in Biology from the University of  Texas at Pan American in 2003, graduating magna cum laude.

She was working at the University of  Texas at Galveston and planning to enter the graduate program in nutrition in the fall of 2004.

She will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Graveside services will be held Friday, August 13, 2004 at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes, TX.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.
