Homer L. Beazley, M.D.

HOUSTON, TX — Homer Liston Beazley, M.D., a veteran of W.W. II, physician, teacher, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a devout Christian gentleman, died Sunday morning, the 8th of August 2004, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Beazley was born in Grapeland,  Texas, on the 1st of November 1920; the fourth child of Homer and Anna Chiles Beazley.

After two years at Baylor University as an accounting major, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. As a lead crew pilot, he flew a B 17 Flying Fortress, equipped with the then -secret Norden Bombsight, for thirty missions in the European Theatre. Captain Beazley was awarded an Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross, as well as shared the Presidential Citation awarded to his 390th Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force.

As one of the "greatest generation," Liston returned to Baylor University, changed his major to pre med, and completed the requirements for medical school in a twelve month period. In 1950, he received his M.D. from Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, graduating first in his class, and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. After completing his residency in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the Baylor affiliated hospitals, he practiced medicine in Harlingen,  Texas with Drs. Howard Tewell and Noel Searle.

In 1964 Dr. Beazley returned to Houston to join Dr. Don Chapman and Dr. Paul Peterson in forming the Houston Cardiovascular Associates. Dr. Beazley was a member of Houston’s first heart transplant team led by Dr. Denton Cooley. He was board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and American College of Cardiology. Dr. Beazley was a Clinical Professor of Medicine in Cardiovascular Diseases at Baylor College of Medicine and was a member of the active medical staff of The Methodist Hospital of Houston. He also held membership in the Harris County and  Texas Medical Societies, the American Medical Association, the  Texas Club of Internists and the Doctor’s Club.

Dr. Beazley was a leader in the education programs of Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital where he served for many years as an attending physician on the Cardiology Teaching Service. He was praised for the excellence of his teaching and clinical competence, as well as being widely known for his professional skills and genuine Christian care in relating to his patients, medical students, residents, and professional colleagues. He received the Outstanding Clinician of the Year award in 1985-86.

Following his retirement from practice in 1985, Liston enjoyed time with his many friends in Houston and Evergreen, Colorado. Pursuing his passion for golf, he was a member of the Riverbend and Hiwan Golf Clubs. He was most proud of his hole-in-one and "shooting his age" at 77. Liston’s other interests included woodworking and tennis. He also enjoyed his membership at the Petroleum Club and the fellowship of The Colonneh Club.

An active member since 1964 of South Main Baptist Church, Liston served as a deacon and acted as "physician" to the church. He will be remembered as a patriot, a physician, and a family man; but most of all, he will stand as an example to all who knew him as a man who lived his life as God directed.

Dr. Beazley is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Dora Kathryn ("Dodie") Williams Beazley; daughter Lista Kay Hightower and husband Rick; son Kenneth Liston Beazley and wife Nancy; granddaughter Hayley Hightower and grandsons Aaron, Luke, and Benjamin Beazley. He is also survived by his nieces; Doris Spence, Glenda Hendon, Bettie Paris, Sherry Rosenthal, and Nancie Pritchard; and sister, Lucille Kyle, Louise Matthews, and Virginia English. The family desires to express their appreciation to all of Liston’s doctors, nurses, and the staff of The Methodist Hospital for their dedicated and professional care. The family also wishes to acknowledge the Methodist Hospital’s Fondren 12 caring staff for their extraordinary care provided to Dr. Beazley during his extended illness.

Friends gathered for a memorial visitation with the family on Tuesday evening, the 10th of August, in the Library of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

A memorial celebration of Liston Beazley’s life will be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 11th of August, at South Main Baptist Church, 4100 Main Street in Houston. Dr. Steve Wells, Rev. Tom Williams, and Rev. Erin Conaway will officiate. Honorary Pallbearers include the deacons of South Main Baptist Church and the members of the Colonneh Club.

In lieu of usual remembrances, memorials in Dr. Liston Beazley’s name may be directed to South Main Baptist Church, 4100 Main Street, Houston, TX, 77002; The Methodist Hospital Foundation, PO Box 4384, Houston, TX 77210; or to the charity of one’s choice.
