Mary J. Alexander

HARLINGEN, TX — Mary Julia DeLane Alexander entered Eternal Rest on Sunday, September 26, 2004 in Harlingen,  Texas. She was born January 27, 1920 in Troop,  Texas to F.W. "Harry" DeLane and Maude Dietz DeLane.

She married James H. Alexander on August 4, 1940 at the University of North  Texas Chapel in Denton,  Texas in a double ceremony with her sister Gene and Will Golightly.

Mary and James moved to Harlingen in October, 1949. Mary spent many years as the first lady of numerous organizations locally, statewide, and nationally from the Valley Chamber of Commerce to the National Independent Dairyman‘s Association.

It seems that she knew everyone as there wasn‘t a name she couldn‘t remember. One of her favorite organizations was Life Begins at 40, of which she was a member with James for 48 years. She served on numerous committees throughout the years, and greatly enjoyed the festivities and long-time friendships they developed. She loved the game of golf, having been the ladies Club Champion for a number of years.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Alexander and her daughter, Mary Jean Alexander.

She is survived by her sister, Gene Golightly of San Antonio; her two sons, James H. Alexander, Jr. (Pat) of Suprize, Arizona and J. Larry Alexander (Lori) of Harlingen,  Texas; two grandsons, two granddaughters, and two great grandsons.

Graveside services will be held Thursday afternoon, (September 30, 2004) 2:00 p.m. at Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito,  Texas.

Family requests that any memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society, Sandi Jo Funk Hospice and Angelcare Homes.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Sandi Jo Funk Hospice and Angelcare Homes for the care and comfort they provided in Mary’s final days.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Doris M. Thomason

MESQUITE, TX — Doris May Thomason, 75, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2004 at Lake Pointe Medical Center in Rowlett, TX.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2004 at 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Edcouch with the Rev. Frank Quesada, Pastor officiating.

A family interment will be held at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes with the Rev. Ken Soles, Former Pastor, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Arturo Flores

HARLINGEN, TX — Arturo Flores, 22, entered into the Lords heavenly kingdom, Monday, September 27, 2004, in Concepcion,  Texas.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jose Juan Flores and a brother, Edward Flores.

Survivors include: 1 daughter, Sierra Rein Flores of Harlingen; His mother, Guadalupe Flores of Harlingen; Brothers: Chris Flores and Daniel Flores both of Harlingen and Jose Juan Flores Jr. of Kennedy, TX; Sisters: Irene Salazar of Harlingen and Brenda Paiz of Corpus Christi, TX. Also surviving are several nieces and 2 nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 1, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 2, 2004, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow to Las Rucias Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Cris Flores, David Flores, Peter Reyes, David Reyes, Billy Salazar, and Jesus Mendoza.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen, TX.

Angelita R. Garza

HARLINGEN, TX — Angelita R. Garza, 95, entered into rest on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at her residence.

She was born on October 5, 1908 and was raised in San Benito by her loving parents, Margarito and Teodora Reyna.

Her husband Santiago L. Garza preceded her in death in 1967.

Angelita is survived by her sons, David Garza of California, Daniel (Juanita) Garza; daughters, Dolores (Conrado) Cisneros, Dora (Jesus) Castaneda, Dulia (Juan) Chamberlain, Delia (Arturo) Lopez all of Harlingen, TX. She is also survived by 39 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, Friday, October 1, 2004 from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 PM.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Saturday, October 2, 2004 at 9:30 AM for a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery in San Benito, TX. Pallbearers will be Ray Isaac Araiza, Frank Araiza, Jr., Mark Anthony Moreno, Santiago Castaneda, Adan Lopez and Fernando Balleza.

Angelita was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Heraclio T. Garza

HARLINGEN, TX — Heraclio Tamayo Garza, 66, entered into the Lords heavenly kingdom, Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at his residence.

He was a lifetime resident of Harlingen. He is preceded in death by his son, Cristobal Garza.

Survivors include his wife, Francisca Guerrero Garza of Harlingen; 5 Daughters: Maria Luisa Garza of  Calif., Guadalupe Andrade of Wisconsin, Rosario Garza also of Wisconsin, Norma Losoya of La Feria, and Estella Garza of Wisconsin; 2 Sons: Adolfo Garza of Harlingen and Gerardo Garza of Mercedes.

Visitation will be held Saturday, October 2, 2004 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity.

A private burial will follow at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen, TX.

Enrique Zepeda

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Enrique Zepeda, 87, passed away Thursday night at a local nursing home.

He owned and operated Zepeda Hardware store in San Benito and Brownsville for over 50 years. He was a member of the Kinghts of Columbus, served as Chairman of the Selective Service Board for 10 years, and was a tail gunner for the Flying Wolves in W W II and the Africa Campaign.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria Zepeda of Brownsville; two daughters, Mary Alice Zepeda of Dallas and Christina Durham of Houston; one son, Enrique H. Zepeda of Austin; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Church services will be held October 2, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Benito. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park with full military Honors from the American Legion Post 205 of Harlingen.

Serving as pallbearers will be Buddy Zepeda, Nicholas Durham, Raul Cavazos, Jr., Eddie Gonzales, Jose Vasquez, Arturo Cavazos, Amado Perez and Patrick Mullens.

Services have been entrusted to the care of Henry Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito. 956-399-9992.

Maria A. Cadena

MERCEDES, TX — Maria Anita Cadena, 92, passed away Thursday evening at her residence.

She was a longtime member of a pioneer family of Mercedes, and a loving wife mother and friend.

She is survived by her husband, Reyes Cadena of Mercedes; three sons, Jose Nicolas (Elida) Cadena of Lubbock, TX, Jorge Cadena, Roberto Cadena both of Mercedes; a daughter, Teresa (Jose Marcelo Garza) Cadena of Weslaco; a sister, Gonia Wallach of Mercedes; also surviving are numerous nephews and nieces among them are Luis (Lucy) Ledesma of Mercedes, Adan (Adelita) Cadena of Edinburg, Ernesto Garza of Alamo, Linda Cadena of Edinburg, Mary (Erasmo) Valdez of Mercedes, Tomasita Mendoza of Mercedes; two grandsons Joe Ray Cadeda, & Manuel Cadena.

Visitation will be held Saturday & Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. both nights.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes at 10:00 a.m., interment will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Maria M. Tobias

HARLINGEN, TX — Maria M. Tobias, 80, entered into the Lords heavenly kingdom, Friday, October 1, 2004 at La Hacienda Nursing Center.

She lived in Harlingen most of her life and attended Joy Adult Care Center in Santa Rosa.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Jose Medrano, second husband, Venacio Tobias; and daughter, Adela Gutierrez.

Survivors include daughter, Lydia Cantu (Carlos), and Teresa Garcia (David) both of Harlingen; Sons, Ignacio Medrano, Basilio Medrano (Angie), and Jose Medrano (Gracie) all of Harlingen; 16 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; Sister, Oralia Mariscal (Chavelo) also of Harlingen.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 3, 2004, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m.

Chapel service will be held at Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity, Monday, October 4, 2004 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jorge Zapata officiating. Burial will follow to Harlingen City Cemetery under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen,  Texas.

Juan Ramon "Pandi" Hernandez Jr.

EL RANCHITO – Juan Ramon "Pandi" Hernandez Jr., 23, of El Ranchito,  Texas, passed away on his birthday, October 1, 2004 in Harlingen,  Texas. He was born October 1, 1981 in San Benito,  Texas, to Juan Ramon and Sylvia Juarez Hernandez. He was a 2000 class graduate of San Benito High School, Class of 2000.

He is survived by the following: mother, Sylvia Juarez Hernandez, father, Juan Ramon Hernandez Sr., sister, Laura Crystal Hernandez, maternal grandparents, Julian and Maria Juarez and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Felipe and Felipa Hernandez.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a rosary scheduled for 7 p.m. in the North Chapel.

The funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church and interment will then follow to the Torres Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his beloved cousins, Adrian Juarez, Vidal Garcia, Jesus Juarez Jr., Julian Juarez, Israel Juarez, Facundo Juarez, Andres Torres and Rene Rodriguez.
