Harry W. Thiesfeld

HARLINGEN, TX — Harry William Thiesfeld, 92, passed away at Retama Manor Nursing Home on Tuesday, October 5, 2004. He was born in Fairfax, MO on June 30, 1912. Harry was a former resident of Glencoe, MN and had been a resident of Harlingen since 1980.

In 1936 he received a B.S. Major on physics and a Minor in math and chemistry from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College and in 1938 a B.A. in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University.

Harry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen, TX. He was also a member of the Mankato Lodge AF & AM in Mankato, MN, the Hope Lodge AF & AM in Glencoe, MN, the Zurah Shrine Center in Minneapolis, MN and the Scottish Rite in Minneapolis, MN.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Callaway Thiesfeld; his sons, Lee (Estelle) of Branson, MO, Lloyd (Barbara) of South Fork, CO, Charles (Jody) of Lakeville, MN and Roger (Robin) of Stafford, VA; son-in-law, LeRoy Ullrich; step-daughters, Adah Creek of Harlingen and Gloria (David) Coats; and his brother, Duane Thiesfeld of Rockport, MO.

Harry was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Harding and his daughter, Eva Ullrich.

Memorial services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 9, 2004 with Rev. Justin  Jones officiating.

For those desiring to do so, memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen or a charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Rafael Martinez

San Benito, TX — Rafael Martinez, 49, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at Audie L. Murphy Veterans Memorial Hospital in San Antonio.

He was born May 6, 1955 to Pedro and Josefina Martinez in San Benito, TX; he was a graduate of San Benito High in 1976 and was a veteran of US Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Josefina Fernandez Martinez.

Survivors are his four children, Rafael Martinez, Jr., Rafael Martinez, III, Marissa Martinez, and Christopher Martinez; a grandson, Dylan Matthew Martinez; also, brothers and sisters, +Pedro Martinez, Jr., Sylvia Besteiro, Margaret (Rogelio) Garza, Rosalinda Castillo, Nena Martinez and Carmen Martinez; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m., today, Friday, October 8, 2004 with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 9, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park. military Rites to be conducted by Veterans Funeral Detail.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Petey Martinez, Rafael Martinez, Jr., Rogelio Garza, Jr., Noe Aguirre, Jr., Robert Lawson, and Mark Leija.

Arrangements are under the care of San Benito Funeral Home.

Thomas J. Jones

AUSTIN/LA FERIA, TX — Thomas James  Jones (T.J.), 28, passed away on October 2, 2004.

He was born in Fort Worth,  Texas on July 24, 1976. After graduating from high school, he attended college at  Texas A&M Kingsville. T.J., a member of the Church of Christ, is most remembered by his beautiful voice and beaming smile.

He loved nothing more than to be surrounded by family and friends, even though his job (truck driver) took him far from home. When he wasn‘t cheering on his favorite team, The Cowboys, he was writing songs-something he did with extreme talent.

He is survived by his parents, Darrell  Jones of Bluetown and Debbie  Jones of Austin; his sister, Lori Vela of McAllen; and his brother, Wesley  Jones of Austin. Also surviving are his grandparents, Howard  Jones of Bluetown, Doris and Tom Gardner of Hurst; a nephew and niece, Nathan and Kaitlyn Vela; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and loving friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at 3:00 p.m. at the Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Gabriella Trevino

SANTA ROSA, TX — Baby Gabriella Annabella Trevino entered into rest October 6, 2004.

She is survived by her parents, David and Fabiola Trevino; sisters, Jessica Mendez, Angelica Trevino, Daniela Trevino, Leslie Martinez; and her brothers, David Trevino, Jr., Daniel Trevino, Anthony Giorno, Hilberto Trevino, Gabriel David Trevino.

She is also survived by her grandparents, Santos and Estella Trevino and Nieves Tolentino.

Visitation will be today (Friday) from 6-8 p.m. and funeral services will be held Saturday, October 9, 2004 with a chapel service at 10 a.m. and interment will follow at Santo Nombre Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home 1702 E. Harrison, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Olga G. Reyes

CORPUS CHRISTI/EDCOUCH, TX — Olga G. Reyes, 79, passed away to be with the Lord, Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at Bay Area Hospital in Corpus Christi,  Texas. Mrs. Reyes was born September 25, 1925 in Weslaco,  Texas to Jacinto Gonzalez and Natalia Lozano Gonzalez.

She graduated from Edcouch-Elsa High School in 1944 and married Alfredo Reyes in 1948. She Attended Harlingen business college for two years and went to work for Elsa State Bank in Elsa,  Texas, where she worked for 39 years, ascending to the position of Vice-President. She was the first Hispanic female to that position. As an officer of the bank she opened the way for hard-working Hispanic families and small businesses to use bank loans to finance cars, homes and business growth, a practice that heretofore had not been available to them. She was very active in her church and community and was very devoted to her family and to her brothers and sisters.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Alfredo Reyes; and son, Rolando Reyes.

She is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Reyes Hardy of Edcouch, TX; 4 brothers, Raul Gonzalez of California, Jacinto Gonzalez Jr. of Corpus Christi, TX, George Gonzalez of Virginia and Eddie Gonzalez of San Antonio, TX; 4 sisters, Rebecca Bloomquist of Florida, Eva Molina of Rio Grande City, TX, Teresa Ruiz of Corpus Christi, TX and Mary Alice Barron of Dallas, TX; also surviving is a granddaughter, Tanya Hardy-Guerra (Robert) of Edcouch, TX; 3 great-grandchildren, Rolanda Rhae Cantu, Justeen Leeanne Cantu and Robbyn Nichole Guerra of Edcouch, TX.

Visitation was held from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Friday, October 8, 2004 with a 7:30 PM rosary at Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco – Chapel of The Heavens.

Funeral service will be held at 12:30 PM, Saturday, October 9, 2004 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Edcouch,  Texas. Celebrant will be Rev. Gregory M. Kuczmanski.

Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Ruben Martinez, Roberto Guerra, Rodolfo Reyes, Antonio Jimenez, David Kriar and Lionel Molina.

Arrangements are under the direction of Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco, Inc., 2602 N.  Texas Ave., Weslaco, TX. (956) 969-1461.

Pedro Martinez, Jr.

SAN BENITO, TX — Pedro Martinez, Jr., 48, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center, Brownsville.

He was born April 1, 1956 to Pedro and Josefina F. Martinez in San Benito,TX.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Josefina F. Martinez; and brother, Rafael Martinez.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Joey) Barbour; a grandson, Jacob Aaron Barbour; a granddaughter, Jaiden Barbour; and five sisters, Sylvia Besteiro, Margaret (Rogelio) Garza, Rosalinda Martinez, Nena Martinez and Carmen Martinez.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 2004 in conjuntion with his brother‘s funeral at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, San Benito, TX.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Petey Martinez, Rafael Martinez, Jr., Rogelio Garza, Jr., Noe Aguirre, Jr., Robert Lawson, and Michael Martinez.

Cornelia E. DeSalme

SAN BENITO, TX — Cornelia Estelle "Corny" DeSalme, 92, passed away on October 14, 2004, at ther residence early in the morning, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Cornelia, or Corny as she was known by her friends, was born May 3, 1912, in San Antonio,  Texas. Her father was Alfred Benjamin DeSalme and mother was Ernestine Brecher DeSalme.

Corny graduated from Alamo Heights High School and attended the University of  Texas as a pre-med student. She then went to Galveston,  Texas, to become a laboratory technician at John Sealey Hospital.

Corny then worked for Dr. Homer Prince, an allergist from Galveston, at Edinburg Hospital, and then opened her own laboratory in San Benito, Alpha Laboratories, in 1935.

In 1951 she opened the popular Citrus Drive In Theatre in San Benito, which closed in 1960. She also was a proprietor of souvenir shops in the Shepherd of the Hills, Arkansas, and Branson, Missouri.

After closing her lab, Corny worked for San Benito Medical Associates until retirement in 1985.

Corny is survived by a cousin, Nelda Sheffler, of San Antonio,  Texas; and a second cousin, Jerry, and wife, Judy DeSalme, of Holden, Missouri.

Her sister, Laura Siepel, San Antonio,  Texas, preceded her in death.

Corny will be dearly missed by many longtime family and friends: Jim, Diane, and Kes Rushing of Woodside, California; Jackie and Bill Patterson of Benton, Arkansas; Bill Byerly, Helen Emberlin, Anna and George Ogdee, Antonio Marmolejo, and Mrs. Cecil Vittatoe of San Benito; Ola Rushing, Corpus Christi; and her wonderful caregivers, Lois Fane, and Olga Aguirre of San Benito,  Texas.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Todd Shenkenberg and the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Center and staff for their caring support during the past few months.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2004 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. in the North Chapel of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home, on the same day, under the direction of Chaplain Quintana.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Center.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas 78586. 956-399-1331.

Gilberto Garcia

HARLINGEN, TX — Senor Gilberto Garcia, one of Harlingen‘s long time pioneers, passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2004. He had been in failing health for the past 8 years.

Mr. Garcia was born on Feb. 4, 1911 in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico and emigrated to the United States along with his family in 1916. The Garcia family, headed by the patriarch and matriarch Cecilio and Silvina, respectively moved to Harlingen in late 1916, including their six sons and two daughters. The family established one of Harlingen‘s first small, minority-owned businesses, Garcia Cleaners. Mr. Gilberto Garcia took over ownership of the business in 1968, but closed it in 1992 for health reasons.

Mr. Garcia served his country in the United States Air Force from 1945 to 1947. He was the first Commander of the local chapter of the Catholic War Veterans and remained an active member thereafter. An avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman, Mr. Garcia was also actively involved in numerous civic and church affairs.

For example, along with his wife, Juanita Narro Garcia, he contributed extensively to the building fund that helped realize the construction of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He was also a member of the Our Lady of Assumption Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Cecilio and Silvina Garcia; four brothers and one sister, Felipe Garcia, Maria Rodriguez, Juan Garcia, Jesus Garcia and Evaristo Garcia.

Mr. Garcia is survived by his wife of 64 years, Senora Juanita Narro Garcia and his five sons and one daughter, Mario Narro-Garcia, Long Beach, CA; Arturo R. Garcia, Escondido, CA; Gil Narro Garcia, Harpers Ferry,  West Virginia; Edward A. Garcia, San Francisco, CA; Mary Lou Tullos, Harlingen; Daniel E. Garcia, McAllen; and 8 grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, Frank and Jose Garcia of Harlingen; and one sister, Sister William Francis, Sisters of the Incarnate Word, Corpus Christi.

Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday, October 20 and 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and a rosary will be held Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 22, 2004 departing the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Briseno as Celebrant, entombment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery under the auspices of the American Legion Post #205 and VFW Post #2410.

Pallbearers will be Edward A. Garcia, Gil N. Garcia, Mario B. Curry, Robin C. Tullos, Stephen M. Chmielewski, Daniel E. Garcia and honorary pallbearer will be Felipe Garcia, Jr.

Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Gonzalo Gonzalez

SAN BENITO, TX — Our precious husband, dad and grandfather entered into the Lord‘s Kingdom on October 18, 2004.

Mr. Gonzalez, was a resident of San Benito since 1960.

He was born in San Benito,  Texas on January 15, 1938 to Josephina and Gonzalo M. Gonzalez, Sr.

He was a teacher in Las Yescas,  Texas at Las Yescas Elementary from 1960-1968 and at Miller Jordan Middle School in San Benito,  Texas from 1968-1990.

His parents preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Dominga and children, Alicia of San Benito, Gonzalo, III (Lin) of Austin, Ana (Jesus) Casas of Round Rock, and Rafael (Yvonne) of Harlingen; two brothers, Gabriel of Pasadena, TX, Gerardo of San Benito; and a sister, Julia Raines from Nebraska.

He is survived by 8 grandchildren who were his pride and joy.

Pallbearers will be Gonzalo M. Gonzalez, III, Rafael Gonzalez, Jesus Casas, Guadalupe Cavazos, Enrique Saldana, and Lionel De La Fuente.

Visitation will be held 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., October 20, 2004 with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services will take place at 3 p.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church with interment following to Mont Meta Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito. 956-399-1331.
