Gilmer L. Ledbetter, Jr.

HARLINGEN — Gilmer L. Ledbetter, Jr., 81, passed away peacefully at his residence Thursday evening. He was born in Bruceville-Eddy,  Texas on August 12, 1923 to Gilmer Ledbetter Sr. and Minnie Henson. He graduated from Bruceville-Eddy High School and attended college at Southwest  Texas State College in San Marcos,  Texas until his senior year when he decided to join the Navy to support his country in World War II.

G.L. Ledbetter, Jr., farmed and worked in agricultural business in the Rio Grande Valley from 1947 until 1990 "Gil" worked as a school bus driver of the U.S. Soil Conservation Services, and became manager of Los Indios Gin Harlingen Grain & Elevator, Edinburg Co-op, and Tropical Grain Co. He was former President of the  Texas Independent Cotton Ginners Association and the San Benito Greyhounds Booster Club.

During his service he met his wife of 59 years, Carmel Lion Ledbetter whom he met while stationed in the Navy in New Orleans, La. "Gil" and Carmel raised two sons, Gilmer Ledbetter III of Harlingen and Bobby Ledbetter of Edinburg.

"Gil" or "Led" is also survived by two sisters, Sylvia "Sweetie" of Grand Prairie, TX and Linda of Garland, TX; one brother, Melvin "Sonny" of Hendersonville, TN and step-mother, Ocie Ledbetter of Garland, TX; five grandchildren, Tammy Catlett, Jennifer Boeck, Alison Ledbetter, Jacob Ledbetter and Joshua Ledbetter; three great grandchildren, Blake and Bethany Boeck and Riley Catlett, also numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Don Uptegraph, Bruce Glasgow, Kevin Catlett, Walker Boeck, Claude McMillon and David Hogue. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Walters, Jim Strickland, Gene Magouirk and Buck Buchanan.

There will be visitation held today (Sunday) from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Henry Thomae Funeral Home Chapel in San Benito. Chapel services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Henry Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie, San Benito, with Rev. Gene Horton officiating. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Services have been entrusted to the care of Henry Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie, San Benito, 399-9992.

Lucile Irene Streb

RAYMONDVILLE — Lucile Irene Streb, 83, passed away Friday, November 19, 2004. She was born September 27, 1921 to William Christian and Anna Louise (Warmke) Sander at Brenham,  Texas and moved to Raymondville with her loving husband, Ernest Leonard Streb in 1943 and together they operated Frontier Industries for many years before his death in 1988. Lucile was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Ladies Society and also active as a Docent for the Willacy Co. Historical Museum.

She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth (Jim) Westphal of Melbourne, Australia and Carol Sue (Ray) Young of Austin; one brother, William (Midge) Sander of Kerville,  Texas; seven grandchildren, Brian and Stephen Young, Jennifer and Jonathan Westphal, Tiffany Westphal Wedding, Alissa Hartley, Christina Evans and two great grandchildren, Aaron and Jessica Wedding.

Funeral services will be Monday, 9:30 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and graveside services will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham,  Texas.

The family request memorials be made to the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home, Raymondville, 956-689-2151.

Manuel Villarreal Pardo

HARLINGEN — Manuel Villarreal Pardo, 72, went home to the Lord’s Heavenly Kingdom, November 20, 2004 at a local hospital due to a sudden illness. He was born to Florentino and Guadalupe Pardo on February 12, 1932 in Sinton,  Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Martinez Pardo of Harlingen and his seven children, Domingo Pardo of Mertzon, TX, Rito Pardo of Levelland, TX, Gustavo Pardo of Mertzon, TX, Javier Pardo of Harlingen, Doralicia Pardo, Alicia Pardo both of Hamlin, TX and Yolanda Davila of Harlingen, fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one brother, Benito Pardo of Levelland, TX and one sister, Natalia Pardo of Roby, TX.

Visitation will begin today, Sunday, November 21, 2004 at 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, November 22, 2004, 1 p.m. at New Life Christian Center located at 925 Zillock Rd., in San Benito with Pastor Eduardo Hinojosa officiating. Interment will follow at Las Rucias Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ramiro Davila, Domingo "Mingo" Pardo, Gus Pardo, Rito Pardo, Ramiro Davila Jr., and Mario Covarrubias.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F Street, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Juanita Silva "Mommy Five" Romero

LOS FRESNOS — Juanita Silva "Mommy Five" Romero, 92, of Los Fresnos,  Texas entered into the eternal kingdom of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, November 21, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center surrounded and embraced by her loving and devoted family. She was born on May 27, 1912 in San Fernando, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and was a resident of Los Fresnos,  Texas for many years. She was the founder of T.M. Romero Grocery Store, established in 1946-1998, a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and active member in the construction of the first mission which was constructed in 1936. She was instrumental in locating the boundaries and establishing the site of the Los Cuates Community Cemetery. She also contributed in obtaining signatures for water service from the East Rio Hondo Water Supply Corporation.

Survivors include two sons, Judge Luis Romero and Jose Hector Romero both of Los Fresnos, TX; daughter-in-law, Dora S. Romero of Los Fresnos, TX; two granddaughters, Irene Romero and Edna E. Medina both of Los Fresnos, TX; sister, Maria S. Vasquez of Brownsville, TX and two great grandchildren, Ruben Rolando and Corina Medina of Los Fresnos.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tomas M. Romero; parents, Rafael and Maria Rita S. Silva; brothers, Jose, Carlos, Lupe, and Mateo Silva and sister, Guadalupe Cruz.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Los Fresnos,  Texas and a rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 22, 2004 and her funeral service will be on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at 3 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church and interment will follow to Los Cuates Community Cemetery.

Funeral services have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas, 78586, 399-1331.

Maria De Jesus Vasquez

SAN BENITO — Maria De Jesus Vasquez, 84, passed away on November 20, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen. Mrs. Vasquez was a life residence of San Benito and a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church.

She survived by her daughter, Antonia (Lupe) Garza of Harlingen; five sons, Jose (Juanita) Vasquez, Esteban (Tony) Vasquez Jr., Jesus (Elida) Vasquez, Eligio (Eunice) Vasquez all of San Benito and Leo (Sylvia) Vasquez of Laureles,  Texas; 31 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Esteban Vasquez Sr., and two daughters, Paula Vasquez and Julia Castillo.

Visitation will be held today, Monday, November 22, 2004 form 12 noon to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel in San Benito. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Eligio Vasquez Jr., Ruben Vasquez, Abraham Vasquez, Ben Vasquez, Enrique Vasquez, and Damien Vasquez.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Home, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, TX 399-1331.

Ovidio J. Canales

Harlingen — Ovidio J. Canales, 74, passed away peacefully, on Sunday, November 21, 2004. He was born on March 23, 1930 in La Feria, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ascencion and Irene Canales and by his son, Javier Canales.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Eloisa C. Canales; his sons Alfredo (Edna) Canales of Harlingen, Hilberto (Celia) Canales of La Feria, TX and Daniel (Victoria) Canales of Sgt. Bluff, Iowa. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Alfredo Canales II, Leah Canales, Lisa Ann Canales, Gilbert Canales, Jr., Lorena Canales, Javier Canales and Daniel Alejandro Canales; one sister, Juanita (Felix) Chavez; one brother, Benito (Elvira) Canales and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, Monday, November 22, 2004 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Plutarco Belanggou as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Heavenly Grace Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Canales’ nephews.

The family wishes to thank Valley Baptist Medical Center 4th Floor, Dr. Shenkenberg, Dr. Castillo and the staff at Sandi Jo Funk Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

Maria F. Salazar

SAN BENITO, TX — Maria F. Salazar, 84, passed away at her residence on November 22, 2004.

Survivors include: daughter, Leticia Corona (Ricardo) Rodriguez; granddaughters, Joe Ann Moreno (Tony) Pinedo and Jamie Rodriguez; grandson, Jacob Rodriguez; great granddaughter, Aleecia Jolynn Pinedo.

She is preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Alice Moreno.

Visitation was held Tuesday, 1-9 p.m., November 23, 2004 with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at St. Benedict‘s Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Dorothy H. Allen

CEDAR PARK, TX — Dorothy Hare Allen was born September 1, 1913, in Conway County Ark

She moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1929. She married John Russell Allen in 1937.

After his death in 1969, she moved to Corpus Christi,  Texas, where she resided until March, 2004, when she moved to Cedar Park,  Texas to live with her daughter. Dorothy was a member of Gardendale Baptist Church.

Dorothy is survived by six children: Bertha Kiker of Portland,  Texas, Fran Spain of Cedar Park,  Texas, Lois Florence of Corpus Christi,  Texas, John Allen of the Woodlands,  Texas, Judy Finn of Houston,  Texas, and Dottie Paradeis of Blue Springs, Missouri; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters: Gwen Strohmeyer of Locust, North Carolina, and Lucy Kirchhefer of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday, November 26, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Restlawn Cemetery Chapel under the direction of Seaside Funeral Home with interment to follow in Restlawn Memorial Park in LaFeria,  Texas.

Memorial Contributions to the American Heart Association would be appreciated.

Deanalie Emma Warrington

HARLINGEN, TX — Deanalie Emma Warrington, 75, passed away on Wednesday, November 24th at Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen after a lengthy illness.

She was born on March 11, 1929 in Houston,  Texas and had lived most of her life in Lyford and Harlingen.

She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Blair of Sebastian and Cynthia Hayes (Tommy) of Longview; three sons, Robert (Kathy) of Harlingen, Wesley (Betty) of Harlingen and Herman (Sara) of Carthage; twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; one brother, Lester Hennings of Michigan and her good friend Antonia Gonzalez of Armstrong.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, John Robert Warrington; two sisters, Lavonne Swisher and Lueda McCannon and a brother, Robert Ray Hennings.

Memorial service will held Friday, 10 a.m., November 26th, 2004, at Duddlesten Funeral Home with John Huegel officiting.

Funeral arrangements are underthe direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Sarah Baker Rogers

LOS FRESNOS, TX — Sarah Baker Rogers, 96, passed away November 23, 2004 at Valley Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Sumter,  South Carolina on October 28, 1908 to Wesley and Ellen Baker.

After retiring from a teaching career in North Carolina, she moved to  Texas in 1982 and resided in Indian Lake.

She is survived by a son, Robert F. (Margaret) Rogers Jr. of Indian Lake; a daughter, Jane Rogers (Frank) Bachman of Corpus Christi; granddaughters, Donna (Scott) Hebert of Colorado, Liz (Neil) Summer of College Station, Charlotte (Harvey) Barr of Harlingen and Roberta Rogers (Dennis Thomas) of Los Fresnos; great-grandchildren, Hank and Ted Hebert, Rebecca and Nathaniel Summer and Brandon Barr.

She is preceded in death by her brother, John D. Baker; her parents, Wesley and Ellen Baker and her husband, Robert F. Rogers, Sr.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held Friday, November 26, 2004 at 3 p.m.

The service will be held at Henry Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito,  Texas. 399-9992

Esther Ruth May

KERRVILLE, TX — Esther Ruth May, 86, went to be with the Lord on November 22, 2004 in Kerrville. She was born on March 2, 1918 in Millsap,  Texas to Walter Walker and Mary Etta McConnell Walker. Esther married and was widowed by John Blanton in 1935. In 1939, Esther married Orville May in Falfurias,  Texas. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Raymondville,  Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Orville May. Mrs. May is survived by her children, Lawrence Blanton and Gail of Kerrville and Linda Shaar and husband, Edwin of College Station. She also has 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She will be loved and missed by many other family other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Friday, November 26, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Raymondville. Interment will be at the Raymondville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kendall Hocott, Ben Krisch, Jr., Scooter McGee, Curtis Shed, Lester Shed and Staton Shed. Honorary pallbearer will be Lopey Brownfield.

Eliza Balli Gonzalez

SAN BENITO — Eliza Balli Gonzalez, 46, of San Benito, passed away at Dolly Vinsant Medical Center on Nov. 24, 2004.

Survivors include her husband Juan Gonzalez, son Juan Gonzalez Jr., daughter Genoveva Gonzalez. Also her mother Elisa De Leon, brother Conrado Balli Jr. and sisters Yolanda Martinez and Herlinda Avalos.

Preceded in death by her father Conrado Balli and brother Juan Antonio Balli.

Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 26, with a Holy rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.
