Frances H. Green

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Frances Hale Green, 75, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 in San Antonio,  Texas. She was born in Ranger,  Texas on January 19, 1929 to Elmer and Ellen M. Hale and raised on Chapman Ranch,  Texas.

Frances was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Hale; brother, R.W. "Dick" Hale.

She is survived by her husband, Sam W. Green; sons, Sam W. Green III (Allison), and Michael Green; mother Ellen M. Hale; granddaughters, Melissa, Raiana; four great-grandchildren.

A Graveside Service will be held at Seaside Memorial Park on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at 12:00 noon.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Shrine Crippled Children‘s Hospital, or charity of choice.

Charles M. Ermey

HARLINGEN, TX — Charles Moorman Ermey, 78, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at his residence.

Charles was born in Tulsa,  Oklahoma on February 6, 1926. Charles was a retired manager with Sears in Norman, OK. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Methodist Church; he also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Charles had been a resident of Harlingen for the past seven years, coming from  Oklahoma City, OK.

Charles is survived by his loving wife, Ruby Ermey; his children, Duane Ermey, Sheryl McGehee, and Bob Ermey; grandchildren, Misti Booker, David Jackson, Daniel Wright, Cayce Ermey, Kris Ermey, and Jennifer Ermey; four great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Elizabeth Ermey, Reba Wortman, and Billie Ruth Beavers.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 11, 2004 at Park Place Estates RV/Mobile Home Park Ballroom in Harlingen at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family request no flowers; memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Sandi Jo Funk Hospice program in Harlingen.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Evelyn Scott Ballard

TOMBALL/MERCEDES, TX — Evelyn Scott Ballard, 85, most recently of Tomball and formerly of Mercedes, passed away December 8th.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Calvin "Sunny" Scott and wife, Molly, Kenneth Scott, Sr. and wife, Geraldine; Anella Foster and husband, Gary; ten grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

The family received friends Thursday evening at Magnolia Funeral Home in Magnolia,  Texas.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, December 11, 2004, at 1 p.m., at Restlawn Memorial Cemetery in La Feria.

Armando Cavazos

BROWNSVILLE/SANTA MARIA, TX — Armando Cavazos, 56, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004 at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Magdalena Cavazos of Brownsville; two sons, Armando Cavazos, Jr. of Laredo, Alejandro Cavazos of Round Rock; his mother; Herlinda R. Cavazos of Santa Maria; two brothers, Reymundo Cavazos of Porterville, CA, Rene Cavazos of Mercedes; one grandson, Robert Matthew Cavazos.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes. Interment will follow at El Zacatal Cemetery near Santa Maria.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Miguel (Mike) Cavazos

San Benito — Miguel (Mike) Cavazos, passed away Friday December 10, 2004 at the Retama Manor Nursing Home in Harlingen, Tx. Mike was born on September 22, 1923 to Alfonso Cavazos and Concepcion Weaver Cavazos at Las Rucias, TX.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolina Trevino Cavazos; his two sons, Miguel Cavazos, Jr. of Harlingen, Rudy Cavazos of Rio Hondo and one daughter, Cynthia C. Brady of Harlingen; three grandsons, James Cavazos of San Benito, David Cavazos of Brownsville and Miguel P. Cavazos of Ft. Worth; two granddaughters, Monica Ann Cavazos of Boise, Idaho and Allison Brady of Harlingen; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Cavazos and Clarissa Cavazos of San Benito; two brothers, Alfredo Cavazos of Illinois and Andres (Andy) Cavazos of San Benito; two sisters, Rosa Gonzales of Rio Hondo and Angela Cavazos of San Benito and several nephews and nieces.

Miguel worked for the  Texas Highways and Public Transportation for 20 years retiring in 1987. Prior to this Miguel owned and operated the "Houston Bar" in downtown San Benito for many years.

Miguel was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joaquin Cavazos who was killed in Okinawa, and two sisters, Aurora Cavazos and Herminia Moreno.

Miguel was a veteran of World War II having served his country in the 3rd Infantry Division. His battles and campaigns were Naples, Anzio, where he was wounded, in southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. His decorations were The Bronze

Service Arrowhead, the Purple Heart, the Rome Ribbon, and the Croix de Guerre.

Visitation will be 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. today Sunday, December 12, 2004 with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel A. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 13, 2004 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 1300 Combs, San Benito, TX with interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX. military rites will be conducted by Veterans Funeral Detail at the graveside.

Special thanks to staff at Retama Manor Nursing Home for all of their caring kindness.

Luis C. Navarrete

HARLINGEN, TX — Luis C. Navarrete, 67, entered through the gates of Heaven to be with our Savior Lord Jesus Christ and his loving wife, Marina Navarrete on December 9, 2004.

He is preceded in death by one sister, Maggie Perez.

Mr. Navarrete was born in Harlingen,  Texas on August 4, 1937.

He leaves behind his children, Esmeralda Bunting, Norma McCoy, Marisa Navarrete, Luis G. Navarrete, Linda Navarrete and John D. Navarrete; granddaughter, Marisella Navarrete. His three sisters, Gladys Lara, Ruth Castillo and Geri ‘Tita’ Negron; four brothers, Danny, Job, Eddie, Enrique Navarrete; sixteen grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today Sunday, December 12, 2004 form 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at Rudy Garza Funeral Home Chapel of Angels. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 13, 2004 departing Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Harlingen,  Texas. The Navarrete family will hold a private interment of cremated remains at a later date.

Pallbearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus #2785 of Harlingen,  Texas. All funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen,  Texas.

Daniel Cruz

HARLINGEN, TX — Daniel Cruz, 73, went to be with the Lord on December 20, 2004.

He is survived by his niece, Flora L. Rodriguez; grandchildren, Erisma, Johan, Beyda Rodriguez all from Harlingen; a son, Daniel Cruz, Jr. from Brownsville, TX; a brother, Roberto De La Cruz; sisters, Epifania de la Cruz and Petra Aranjon.

Mr. Daniel Cruz is preceded in death by his brothers, Macario de la Cruz, Cipriano de la Cruz, and Jesús de la Cruz.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2004, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Mont Meta Restlawn/Cox Funeral Home Chapel, with a holy Rosary to be said at 7 p.m.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at Mont Meta Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, TX.

Funeral services are entrusted to the care of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider.

Max Hogg

MERIDIAN, TX — Max B. Hogg, age 101, who resided in Laguna Park on Lake Whitney, died Sunday.

Services 2 p.m., Wednesday, at Lawson Funeral Home Chapel in Meridian. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Hogg was a long time cotton broker in the Harlingen and Brownsville area for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Maxine Werner and husband, Willie, of Comfort, 6 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

Mary Lope

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Mary Sue Wheeler Lope, age 85, entered into eternal rest December 19, 2004, following a lengthy illness in Brownsville,  Texas, where she had resided with her daughter the past two years. She was born December 17, 1919, in Aberdeen, Mississippi and moved to Raymondville with the Wheeler family in 1921. She was a 1937 graduate of Raymondville High School.

In 1938 she married Raymond Lope who preceded her in passing in 1997.

She is survived by her only child, Annie Sue Lope MacNelly (Rayburn); one granddaughter, Jane Denise Rookwood (Greg) of Carrollton,  Texas; one grandson, Warren Ray MacNelly (Mary Lou) of Los Fresnos; five great grandchildren, Marshall MacNelly (Melissa) of Tucson, Arizona, Randall MacNelly of Los Fresnos, Jody Gillis of Caroollton, Michael Rookwood and Heather Rookwood of Carrollton; one great great granddaughter, and a close family friend, Vicki Coronado.

Visitation will be at the Duddlesten Funeral Home in Raymondville. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Marion E. Sojack

MISSION, TX — Marion E. Sojack, age 76, was born May 10, 1928 in Fredek,  Texas and passed away on December 18, 2004 at his residence in Mission

Marion started farming in 1942 at the age of 14 in Santa Maria and moved to Rio Hondo. In 1956 he moved to Granjeno and then to Mission a few years later where he continued farming. His son Wayne proudly carries on the family farming tradition.

Survivors include: Daughter Debra Lynn Sojak of Orlando, Florida; Son Wayne (Eva) Sojak of Mission; Grandchildren Wayne and Amy who were the joy of his life; Brothers and Sisters Mary Gray of Redlands, Califiornia, Effie Rosene of Houston, George Sojak of Rio Hondo, Dorothy McIntire of Rosharon, Clem Sojak of Redmond,  Washington, Jimmy Sojak of Rio Hondo.

Preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Billy, August, Josephine, Jesse, Raymond, Sophie, Charlie and Frank Sojak.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Raul Aguilar, Nancy Neal, Diana Ramos and Idalia at the VA Clinic for their compassion and help.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 21, 2004 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission.

Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul‘s Catholic Church in Mission with Monsignor Robert Da Vola officiating.

Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery with VFW Post 8788 performing graveside military services.

A dear friend said of him while standing at his bedside, "He rode a lot of hard horses in his lifetime, but this is the hardest one he‘s ever had to ride" and he rode hard until the end.

Services are under the direction of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission.

Jose Luz Olivarez

Services for retired Staff Sgt. Jose Luz Olivarez, 83, of Killeen were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Killeen with the Rev. Sang Lee officiating.

Burial with full military honors was followed to the Killeen Memorial Park.

Olivarez died August 19, 2004. He was born June 1, 1921, in Monterrey, Mexico, and was educated in San Benito. Olivarez joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and retired in 1968 on Fort Hood.

His military awards and decorations included the Good Conduct Medal second award and the National Defense Service Medal with an oak leaf cluster. After he retired from the military, Olivarez went to work for the Army Air Force Exchange System on Fort Hood as a service station manager.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of the American Legion Post 223 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9192, both of Killeen.

Survivors include his wife, Lupe Olivarez of Killeen; two sons, Agustin Olivarez and Joe Olivarez, both of Austin; a daughter, Viola Garcia of Austin; a sister, Francisca Gallegos of San Benito; nine grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

Olivarez was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Ruth Perez; his parents; and a sister, Rosa Leija.

Harper-Talasek Funeral Home of Killeen was in charge of these arrangements.

Rubie C. Lee

HARLINGEN, TX — Rubie Carter Lee, age 90, passed away December 17, 2004, at her home in La Feria, TX. She was born on May 7, 1914, in Iowa.

Rubie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Troy Lee; sister, Ethel; son, Gary Carter; and grandson, Tim Norby.

Survivors include daughter, Judi Carter; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Rubie moved to La Feria from Indiana in approximately 1980. She was a skilled Seamstress and took great pride in decorating and caring for her home and yard. She also worked for many years in dress shops throughout the Midwest. Rubie will be remembered for her sharp wit, sense of humor and warm spirit. Todd and Donna Carter would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Florence Presas for the wonderful care and companionship she provided to Rubie and for being their eyes, ears, hands and feet in caring for their grandmother.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2004, at 2 p.m., at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home, Cemeteries, Mausoleum and Crematory. Dignity Memorial Provider.

Antonio Maldonado

HARLINGEN, TX —Antonio Maldonado passed away December 20, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center. Mr. Maldonado was a truck driver for 35 years and was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Tomasa Maldonado; sons, Armando Maldonado, Antonio F. Maldonado, Alfredo Maldonado; daughter, Graciela Diaz; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brother, Alfredo Maldonado; and sister, Guadalupe Grijalva.

Visitation will be held at the funeral Home on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at 10 a.m. with Interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
