Marc Anthony Valdez

June 4, 2000 – January 7, 2005

HARLINGEN — Marc Anthony Valdez, age 4, was called home to the Lord’s Heavenly Kingdom on January 7, 2005 at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. He was born June 4, 2000 in Dallas,  Texas to his parents Guillermo Valdez Jr. and Noemi Valdez.

Marc Anthony was a Pre-K student at Dishman Elementary. His favorite super hero was Spiderman and he loved to ride his bicycle. He was a very loving boy that had a big heart for everyone and has left his family with many cherished memories.

He is survived by his parents Guillermo Valdez, Jr. and Noemi Valdez; three siblings, Nichole Renee, Victoria Angeli, and Jacob Andrew Valdez; maternal grandparents, Roy Villegas and Celia Villegas and Guadalupe Paredes; maternal great grandparents, Carmen Espinoza; paternal grandparents, Guillermo and Paula Valdez; aunts and uncles, Jose Lopez, Ignacio Garza III, U.S. Army, Ralph (Georgina) Garza, Terry (Doug) Grossman, Lupita (Jesse) Angulo, Maria (Victor) Resendez, Amanda Flores, Paula Valdez, Manuel Valdez, and Felix (Joann) Valdez; cousins, Vanessa, Joey (Candy), Jacob Lopez, Ralphie, Renae Garza, Adrian, Nick Grossman, Kristin, Jose Flores, Amy Gonzalez, Azaria, Jasiah Valdez, and David Valdez.

Visitation will begin Sunday, January 9, 2005 at 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Prayer of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, January 10, 2005 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church. Private burial will be at a later date.

Active pallbearers will be Ralph Garza Sr., Ralph Garza Jr., Felix Valdez and Ignacio Garza III.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Viola Aguirre Dye

SAN BENITO — Viola Aguirre Dye, 81, passed away at home surrounded by her beloved family on January 7, 2005. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tomas S. Aguirre Sr. and Evangeline L. Aguirre; her late husband, Augustine Gonzalez, Sr.; son, Augustine Gonzalez, Jr.; brothers, Eugenio L. Aguirre and Tomas L. Aguirre; sister, Olga Villarreal; and step-sister, Piedad A. Rodriguez.

Viola is survived by her husband, Victor L. Dye of San Benito; daughters, Dalia (Lawrence) Uranga, Adriana Calvillo and Violette (Albert) Burrola all of California; sisters, Mary Alice (Andres) Cavazos, Corina (Rene) Pequeno, Eva Padilla and Florestela Aguirre; brothers, Jose L. "Pickles" (Rita) Aguirre and Robert L. "Bubba" (Criselda) Aguirre; sisters-in-law, Emerita R. Aguirre and Victoria J. Aguirre; godchildren, Norma L. Boland and Eugene T. (Geno) Pequeno; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Claudia Cruz her caretaker and Hospice.

Visitation will be held today (Sunday) from 1 p.m. till 9 p.m. at Henry Thomae Funeral Home with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Church services will be held Monday, January 10, 2005 at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Benito. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Services have been entrusted to the care of Henry Thomae Funeral Home 701 N. Bowie, San Benito, 399-9992.

Herminia Esparza Cantu

MISSION/KINSGVILLE, TX — Herminia Esparza Cantu, 90, passed away on Saturday, January 08, 2005 at Kingsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kingsville,  Texas. She was born October 31, 1914 in San Antonio,  Texas, the daughter of Alberto and Eva Esparza. She married Rafael C. Cantu on February 4, 1937 in San Benito,  Texas where they resided until his death on January 29, 1983.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She is survived by her sister, Berta Gomez of Houston,  Texas; her two sons, Rafael (Dolores) Cantu of Mission,  Texas and Carlos (Caron) Cantu of Abilene,  Texas; her three daughters, Esther Celeste (Joaquin) Zapata of Kingsville,  Texas, Bertha (Manuel) Gonzalez of Seattle,  Washington, and Dolores (Robert) Hoeber of Austin,  Texas; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Ric Brown Funeral Home in Mission,  Texas (621 East Griffin Parkway) on Monday, January 10, 2005 with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Mission,  Texas (1119 Francisco Street) followed by interment at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mission,  Texas (3605 North  Taylor Road).

Pallbearers will be Rafael Cantu, Jr., Roman Cantu, Jose Rene Zapata, Mario Cruz, Roberto Flores, and Jose Lopez.

Services under the direction of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission.

Ida Mae Reime

HARLINGEN — Ida Mae Reime, 77, passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at her residence. Ida Mae was born March 6, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio to Charles Curtis and Gertrude Helen Galpin. Ida Mae was an inspector with Western Electric Telephone for many years. She had lived in Harlingen for several years, coming from Zainsville, Ohio. Ida Mae was an avid Square Dancer, having been a member of several Square Dance Clubs. She was also a member of Rio Hondo Baptist Church in Rio Hondo,  Texas, and she enjoyed Spanish weaving.

Ida Mae is survived by her loving husband, Earl Reime of Harlingen; sons, Randy (Sue) Fausnaugh of Pataskala, OH, Jim (Jackie) Fausnaugh of Reynoldsburg, OH; stepsons, Bob Reime of Pataskala, OH and Michael Reime of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Mark Fausnaugh of Buckeye Lake, OH, Kevin Fausnaugh, Jessie and Justin Fausnaugh and Lindsay Fausnaugh all of Canal Winchester, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at 3 p.m. at the Encore-Harlingen RV Park Fellowship Hall with Reverend Gene Horton officiating and assisted by Vance Greek.

For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to the Rio Hondo Baptist Church in Rio Hondo, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Herminia Esparza Cantu

Clyde P. Privett

LAGUNA VISTA — Clyde P. Privett, age 91, passed away Friday, Jan 7, 2005 at his home in Laguna Vista. Clyde was born in Monticello, KY in 1913 and was a 1933 graduate of Rio Hondo High School. He resided in Port Isabel from 1941 until moving to Laguna Vista in 2003. While living in Port Isabel, he was a business owner, Cub Scout master, community worker, a founding member of the Port Isabel Volunteer Fire Department and the  Texas International Fishing Tournament. He was also a lifetime member of the I.L.A., as well as a very dedicated Christian.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley; two sons, Bill of Dallas and David (Nancy) of Laguna Vista; two daughters, Carol (Steve) Spoonemore of Corpus and Ann (Jon) Schroeder of Laguna Vista; five grandchildren, 5¼ great grandchildren, and five siblings; sisters, Shirley Zeller of Dixon Ill, Dorothy Pettit of Elm Mott, TX, and Nellie Howerton of Clinton, Ill. Brothers Thomas Owens of Clinton, Ill, Bob Owens of Tarpon Springs Fla. His mother, father and six siblings preceded him in death.

Visitation will begin after 1:30 p.m. at the Church.

Church services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday January 11, 2005 at Christ’s Harbor Church in Laguna Vista. Burial will be following at Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito.

Pallbearers will be Travis Privett, David Privett, Bill Privett, Jon Schroeder, Rafael Mata & Don Farrar.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Garza at 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, TX 956 399-1331.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Clyde’s name.

Roberto Garza

RIO HONDO — Roberto Garza, God needed an angel and Roberto Garza was called upon on January 8, 2005

Roberto a native of Rio Hondo, TX was 29 years old when he met his savior.

He was both strong in mind and spirit until the end of his days.

A simple person, rich with love and a passion for living is how he will always be remembered. He did not care whether one was young or old, rich or poor, to him everyone was the same and he greeted everyone with his tender heart.

Roberto was a graduate of Rio Hondo High School in 1996 and was always an active volunteer trainer for the Rio Hondo Bobcats. He was also an active member of his church, The Church of Jesus Christ, where he served as an elder.

He is survived by his father, Guadalupe S. Garza of Austin, mother, Guadalupe O. Garza of Rio Hondo, brothers, Jesse Garza of Rio Hondo, Richard Chapels of Harlingen, sisters, Maria Oralia Ortega of Houston, Letty Pena of Brownsville, Diana Mascorro of Rio Hondo, nephews, Jose G. Pena Jr., Victor Pena, Orlando Mascorro, nieces, Lorie Ortega, Sandra Pena, Rachella Mascorro, Chantelle Mascorro, cousins, San Juana Moya, Senaida Ramirez, Maricela Nunez, Johnny Garza; uncles, German Nunez and Rafael Lopez; aunt, Mary Garza.

Visitation will be 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today January 10, 2005 at San Benito Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be 3:00pm Tuesday January 11, 2005 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2320 Haine Drive, Harlingen, TX with entombment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Mausoleum, San Benito, TX.

Pallbearers will be Jose G. Pena Jr., Victor Pena, Orlando Mascorro, Johnny Garza, Alfredo Barrera and Lamar Lewis

Arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, 1400 West Hwy 77, San Benito, TX. 78586.

Jean E. Ashley

HARLINGEN, TX — Jean Elaine Ashley, 73, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Jean was a devoted wife and mother; always putting her family first. Jean was born on November 9, 1931 in Williams, AZ to Jess G. and Mavise W. Cowles. Jean was a retired school teacher, having taught for over 26 years. She graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Music education. Jean married Robert F. Ashley, Jr. on August 9, 1953 in Albuquerque, NM. Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harlingen where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School.

Jean is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Robert F. Ashley, Jr.; daughters, Debra Jean Ashley Weatherly, Cynthia Ann Ashley Garza, Saundra Deanna Ashley, and Wanda Joanna Ashley; grandchildren, John Thomas Spencer, Jacob Christopher Garza, and Markus Jason Garza; sister, Lorraine Rowland; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Mavise Cowles.

Visitation hours will be held Tuesday, January 11, 2005 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside services only will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park with Reverend Chris Hall officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Calvary Christian School, 1815 N. 7th St., Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Frances Ruth Rucker

HARLINGEN, TX — Frances Ruth Rucker, 79, passed away Monday, January 10, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas. Frances was born on August 31, 1925 in Hondo,  Texas. She lived in Hondo until her early 20‘s and then moved to San Antonio. She lived there for many years and worked with the Civil Service until her retirement in the late 80‘s. She then moved to Harlingen where she had resided since.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harlingen and a member of the Lydia Sunday School Class. She is survived by a daughter, Diane (Ronnie) Harwell of Harlingen; son, Douglass Lee (Liz) Bunting of California; brother, George Rucker of Arlington, TX; sisters, Anna Lee Rucker of Pasadena, TX, Romana Wilson of Pearsall, TX and Mary Emma Heiligman of Hondo; grandchildren, Adam Bunting, Mardi (Michael) Hall, Wayne (Kathy) Harwell and Sundy (Chris) Amy; great-grandchildren, Amanda Harwell,  Taylor Harwell and Garrett Harwell. Frances will be cremated as per wishes and no local services will be held.

Those desiring to do so may make memorial donations to the First Baptist Church, 501 E. Van Buren, Harlingen,  Texas 78550. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Geronimo Rivera

HARLINGEN, TX — Geronimo Rivera 79 passed away on Sunday January 9, 2005 at Harlingen Medical Center. He will be dearly missed by his family friends and all whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his loving daughter Rosalinda (Ben) Longoria of Harlingen, two grandchildren Ben (Letty) Longoria Jr. of San Benito and David Longoria of Harlingen.

Mr. Rivera is also survived by two sisters Felipa Rivera, Santos Perez both of Harlingen and one brother Florentino Rivera of California. Visitation will be held today Tuesday January 11, 2005 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 7:00 p.m. at Rudy Garza Funeral Home chapel of Peace.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 12, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Rudy Garza Funeral Home chapel of Peace with Pastor George Pesina to officiate the funeral service. Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park.

Pallbears will be David Longoria, Erenesto Vasquez Jr., Oscar Vasquez, Jerry Vasquez, Roy Vasquez and Luis Vasquez.

All funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen,  Texas.

Carlos Z. Gracia, Sr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Carlos Z. Gracia, Sr., 80, entered the Lord‘s heavenly kingdom on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

He was a native of Brownsville,  Texas but had lived in Harlingen most of his life. A professional lawman he served in the Harlingen Police Department for over 33 years. He moved up the ranks of Patrolman, Sargeant and retired as a detective.

After retirement he joined the Cameron County Sherrif Dept., as a Lt. until being named by the Cameron County Commissioners Court to replace the late Constable I.J. Galvan’s death.

He then was elected constable serving the people of Pct. 7. Mr. Gracia was a Veteran of World War II. He served with the 44th Coast Artillery Battillion. He participated in the Western Pacific Ground Combat in Iwo Jima. He received the following medals, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, with 2 Bronze Stars and Good Conduct Medal.

He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post #205 and V.F.W. Post #2410. He also was the original founders of Harlingen Crimestoppers.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Ezequiel Gracia and Victoria Zamora Gracia.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Antioneta Astorino Gracia of Harlingen; sons, Carlos (Alicia) Gracia, Jr., of Harlingen, Richard (Guadalupe) Gracia of Harlingen, Jaime A. Gracia of Harlingen, Ezequiel A. (Rose Ann) Gracia of Harlingen; 2 daughters, Sally (Gilbert) Blanco and Heidi Rocha both of Harlingen; his former wife, Ninfa Cano Salinas of Harlingen; 9 brothers, Fernando Gracia of San Antonio, Jose Matias Gracia of El Paso, Ezequiel Gracia, Jr., of Organe, CA, Eduardo Gracia of Harlingen, Rodolfo Gracia of Corpus Christi, Juan Gracia of Idaho, Polin Gracia of Brownsville, Ruben Gracia of Brownsville and Jose Angel Gracia, Sr. of Brownsville; 2 sisters, Maria Capistran of Brownsville and Olga Ferrell of Ohio; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A rosary service was held last night at Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home 1002 E. Harrison.

Funeral Mass will be held today, Thursday, at 2 p.m., with Father Richard Czerwien as Celebrant at Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Burial will follow with military Honors under the Auspices of American Legion Post 205 and V.F.W. 2410 at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Honored to be pallbearers will be Carlos Gracia, Jr., Ricardo Gracia, Jaime A. Gracia, Ezequiel A. Gracia, Jose Angel Gracia, Jr., and Arturo Cruz Gracia, Jr.

All funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home 1002 E. Harrison, Harlingen,  Texas 78550 (956) 364-2444.

Charles A. Jones

HARLINGEN, TX — Charles A. Jones, 77, passed away Monday, January 10, 2005.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends and all whose lives he touched.

The former P.O.W. and War Veteran is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice T.  Jones of Harlingen.
