Gardena V. Kristof

HARLINGEN — Gardena V. Kristof, 90, passed away at Harlingen Nursing Center. Gardena was born on October 20, 1914 in Caldwell,  Texas. She married Emil J. Kristof on October 10, 1937. They moved to Harlingen in 1943 and farmed locally for many years. Gardena was a longtime employee of Abigail’s Dress Shop in Harlingen and had many friends and customers. She was a member of the Eighth and Harrison Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank B. and Viasta Dusek; brothers Alvin Dusek and Milton Dusek; and husband Emil J. Kristof.

She is survived by her daughter, Emilie (James) Carmichael of Nova Scotia; sons, Kenneth (Linda) Kristof and Garland (Brenda) Kristof both of Harlingen; brothers, Hubert (Gerry) Dusek of Rio Hondo and Frank Dusek of Palm Valley; grandchildren, Kurt (Melanie) Carmichael of Harlingen, Matthew Kristof and Preston Kristof of Austin, Melissa (John) Byrum of Harlingen; and special great grandchildren, Greg, Nick and Bryan Byrum of Harlingen.

Graveside services will be held Monday January 17, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Minister Jacob Vincent of Eighth and Harrison Church of Christ officiating.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to the caring staff at Harlingen Nursing Center.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sunny Glen Children’s Home, or the charity of your choice.

Concepcion A. Colunga

Harlingen — Concepcion A. Colunga, 88, entered into rest on Saturday at her residence peacefully and surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Colunga was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and an active parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Guadalupanas and enjoyed singing in the choir.

Mrs. Colunga is preceded in death by her husband Agustin Colunga and sons Carlos and Jose Colunga.

She is survived by her loving children Tomas Colunga of Harlingen, TX, Juan Colunga of Corpus Christi, TX, Alfonso (Vanessa) Colunga of Austin, TX, Bartola (Chon) Santillan of Harlingen, TX, Margaret Saldana of Austin, TX, Catalina Ruedas of Austin, TX, daughter-in-law Maria Colunga of Harlingen, TX, 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Sunday, January 16, 2005 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with the Holy Rosary prayed at 7:30 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home today, Monday, January 17, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park in Harlingen, TX.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Santillan, Rick Santillan, Danny Santillan, Andy Santillan, Rene Santillan and Rolando Santillan. Honorary pallbearers will be Carlos Colunga, Staniel Saldana, Efrain Santillan, Tomas Colunga, Freddy Colunga and Geronimo Ruedas.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Santiago Escalante

La Feria — Santiago Escalante, 78, entered into rest on Saturday at Harlingen Nursing Home. Mr. Escalante was a lifelong resident of La Feria and was employed with H.E. B as a truck driver for many years.

He is preceded in death by his wife Berta Robles Escalante and is survived by his children Lucinda Escalante of Houston, TX, Enedelia Escalante of Houston, TX and Lucian Escalante of La Feria, TX.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 17, 2005, from 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM at the Rudy Garza Palms Chapel of Peace. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at 10:00 AM at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of La Feria.

Herlinda Garcia Silva

MERCEDES — Herlinda Garcia Silva, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Mercedes,  Texas Saturday afternoon, January 15, 2005 surrounded by her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Inez Garcia; her husband, Fidel Silva, three sons, Oliveros, Heriberto and Omar Silva; one daughter, Melida Silva. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Arminda Silva and three brothers, Leonel, Luis Sergio and Roberto Garcia.

Mrs. Garcia is survived by a son, Humberto (Pauline) Silva; two daughters, Elva and Sylvia S. (Pete) Martinez all of Mercedes. She is also survived by four brothers, Conrado Garcia, Ovidio Garcia, Humberto Garcia and Oscar Garcia all of Mercedes; six sisters, Carmen Longoria of Brownsville, Carolina Garcia of Mexico, Celia Rivera, Rosa Cantu, and Raquel Hinojosa all of Mercedes. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. The family also wishes to recognize a very special caregiver, Lucinda Ralda.

Visitation will take place Monday from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at a time and place to be announced, interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Pallbearers will be Pete D. Martinez, Matthew M. Martinez, Raymond Vasquez, Onesimo Garcia, Jr., Alejandro F. Garcia, Ernesto Garcia and Leonel Vasquez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Audelia Arellano

LYFORD, TX— Audelia Arellano, 75, passed away Friday, January 14, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX. She was born September 25, 1929 in Lyford,  Texas to Rafael and Eulogia (Loya) Reyna. She lived in Willacy County all her life.

She is survived by her husband, Francisco Arellano of Lyford; one daughter, Adela Garcia of Lyford; four sons, Rene Arellano of McAllen, Roque Arellano of Pharr, Juan Francisco Arellano of Harlingen and Victor Arellano of McAllen; one brother, Raul Reyna; three sisters, Guadalupe Romo, Soila Arellano and Severa Garcia. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A rosary will be held Monday 7 p.m., at Prince of Peace. Funeral service will be held Tuesday 10 a.m., January 18th, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Lyford. Burial will follow at the Lyford Evergreen Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Anita Rodriguez Ramirez

RAYMONDVILLE — Anita Rodriguez Ramirez, 61, passed away Friday, January 14, 2005 at Houston Hospice in Houston, TX. She was born April 17, 1943 in Loredo,  Texas to Rosalio and Angelita (Torres) Rodriguez.

She is survived by her husband, Jose Roque Ramirez of Raymondville; three daughters, Mary Ann Gomez of Houston, Alicia de Luna of Lubbock, and Rosalie Ann Ramirez of Houston; fours sons, Jose Roque Ramirez, Jr. of Houston, Jimmy and Rueben Ramirez both of Raymondville and Reynaldo Ramirez of Harlingen; two sisters, Carmen Velasco and Angelita De La Rosa both of Immokalee, FL; one brother, Armando Rodriguez of Naples, FL.

She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be held Monday, 7 p.m. at Duddlesten Chapel. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 10 a.m., January 18, 2005 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

VERONICA L. SALINAS-CONTRERAS

MERCEDES TX — Veronica L. Salinas-Contreras 31, of Mercedes entered into rest on January 21, 2005.

Veronica was a 1991 graduate of Mercedes High School and was a nursing student at The University of  Texas-Brownsville. She was 1 semester short of obtaining her nursing degree when she became ill. Veronica taught CCD for many years.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 23, 2005 from 12-9p.m. and a rosary will be at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, January 24, 2005 departing the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery pallbearers will be members of her family Veronica is preceded in death by her brother, Arnoldo Salinas and grandparents; Jose and Magdalena Rivera and Enrique and Sinforosa Salinas.

She is survived by her loving husband, Carlos Omar Contreras; parents, Judge Homer and Maria Elena Salinas; sisters, Linda (John) Mallard of San Francisco, CA, LaVerne (Hilario) Pena of Mercedes, Henrietta (Ronald) Peynado of Mercedes and Madeline Salinas of Mercedes. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews Hilary and Erin Pena and Mathew, Marcus and Noah Peynado. A special thanks to Dr. Michael Flores, Dr. Ricardo Abreu, Dr. Juan Manuel Ortiz and the ICU nursing staff at Knapp Medical.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Legacy of Life Tissue Foundation, 4804 Research Dr., San Antonio, TX 78240; 800-397-3077.

Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Celestino P. Solano

HARLINGEN, TX — Celestino P. Solano, age 73, went to be with our Lord on January 20, 2005 in Austin, TX. He was born on April 6, 1931 to Santos and Antonia Solano in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

He had lived in Harlingen most of his life and retired from Sort-Rite International Corp. in 2004. He did have a love of music and played guitar.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Gloria Solano.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he is dearly loved and will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Dolores Martinez Solano; his children, Rolando Solano, Raquel S. Vargas (Mike), Rosa E. Hagan (Patrick), Rebecca S. Silva (Robert), Celestino Solano Jr., and Rodolfo Solano; and 11 grandchildren; and a host of friends.

Visitation will begin on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on January 23, 2005 with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home Chapel.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., on Monday, January 24, 2005 at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Rolando Solano, Mike Vargas, Patrick Hagan, Robert Silva, Celestino Solano, Jr. and Rodolfo Solano.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home.

Guadalupe (Lupita) C. Rodriguez

SAN BENITO, TX — Guadalupe (Lupita) C. Rodriguez, 87, of San Benito, passed away January 18, 2005, at Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Lupita was a devoted, loving, and caring mother. She was also an active member of The Sacred Heart Church Choir in Memphis. Before moving to Memphis, Lupita worked at "Miguel‘s Restaurant in Brownsville where she helped her daughter, Olga manage the Restaurant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guadalupe Rodriguez; and son, Tomas Rodriguez.

She leaves five daughters, Maria (Clete) Singler of Fort Worth, Julia Gonzalez of Harlingen, Olga (Mike) Vega of Brownsville, Frances De Leon of Harlingen, Estela (Roger) Singler of Memphis, TN and their families.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Sunday, January 23, 2005, with Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m., at San Benito Funeral Home, 1400 West Hwy 77, San Benito, TX 78586.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 24, 2005, at St. Mary‘s Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Rd., Brownsville,  Texas 78520. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, San Benito,TX.

Pallbearers will be Michael, Ron, and Chris Vega, Pablo and Lionel Gonzalez, and Marty De Leon.

Mildred S. Baileys

HARLINGEN — Mildred S. Bailey, 87, passed away Saturday January 15, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born August 26, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois. Mildred moved from Chicago to Harlingen in 1977. She was a housewife and a member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Harlingen.

She was the beloved mother of Leah Baileys Herkel of Chicago, IL and Deborah Baileys Ewert (son-in-law, Keith A. Ewert) of Lake Villa, IL.

No local services will be held.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Stewart (Stu) David Mason

HARLINGEN — Stewart (Stu) David Mason, 94, went to be with his Lord and Savior to that Shining city hill and the home has prepared for him there on Wednesday, January 19, 2005.

Born on March 13, 1910 in Toronto, Canada, he was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Daisy Mason.

Mr. Mason played semi-professional hockey for many years in Canada and his hobbies were golf and tennis.

At the age of 23, after a message at the Peoples Church in Toronto, Canada, he saw his need for a Savior and surrendered his life to Christ. Feeling the need to study the bible, he entered Toronto Bible College and there met his future wife, Bernice Hall. They married and have enjoyed over 70 years of sharing their lives together.

Mr. Mason served as a Petty Officer for two years in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. After being discharged he moved his family to Lansing, Michigan where he was employed at the Lansing Board of Water and Light for 27 years, retiring in 1975. After retirement Mr. Mason moved to Harlingen  Texas, where he became a Deacon and adult bible teacher at the First Baptist Church. He also worked part-time and full-time for many years at H & V True Value Hardware in Harlingen.

He loved visiting and ministering to the sick, and those confined to nursing homes. He loved the Lord and loved people, and in return was loved by many people, young and old.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bernice, his daughter, Carolyne Beak (husband, William), and son, Stewart Mason Jr. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Penelope Warner (husband, Kevin) Jeffrey Beak (wife Trudy) and two great-grandchildren, Justin Geraldo (wife, Sonia) and Bryce Geraldo.

There will be a memorial service for Stewart Mason at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen, 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 25, 2005 with the Rev. Patrick Graham officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Lansing, Michigan with family and friends with William Beak, son-in-law, officiating.

The family request that memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Buiding Fund, 501 E. Van Buren, Harlingen, TX 78550 or to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospiee Program, P.O. Drawer 2588, Harlingen, Tx 78551.

Leandro T. Garza

HARLINGEN, TX — Leandro T. Garza, 93, passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at his residence in Harlingen. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends and all whose lives he touched.

Leandro loved his job as a pilot as he flew a single engine crop dusters through the beautiful sky‘s for over thirty years and enjoyed taking his family fishing.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty six years of marriage, Carmen Ortiz Garza; and one granddaughter, Lisa Claudette Garza.

Leandro is survived by his children, Leandro (Palmira) Garza of Monterrey, Mexico, Maria Luisa (Jose) Pena of Santa Rosa, Rudy (Linda) Garza of San Diego, California, Rosie Withers of Harlingen, Carmen (Xavier) Galvan of Harlingen, Leticia (Brad) Schweigert of Harlingen, Jaime Garza of Harlingen; one sister, Ernestina Gutierrez of Donna; nineteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held today, Tuesday, January 25, 2005 departing Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. for a 2:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church of Harlingen. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park of La Feria.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Carlos Garza, Adrian Rios, Ben Rios Jr., Sergio Galvan, James Garza, Carlos Silva.

Honorary pallbearers will be Leandro Alberto Garza, Eric Anthony Garza, Orlando Garza, Jacob Garza.

All funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen,  Texas.
