Pauline B. Hodge

HARLINGEN, TX — Pauline Brady Hodge, 88, passed away Monday, January 24, 2005 at Golden Palms Health Care Center in Harlingen. Pauline was born on September 15, 1916 in Sulphur Springs,  Texas to Millen and Lydia Brady.

Pauline was the owner/operator of Pauline‘s Beauty Shop. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Harlingen.

Pauline is survived by her son, Richard H. Hodge of Port Isabel, TX; daughter, Patricia Mailing of Seffner, FL; brother, Jack Brady of Harlingen, TX; and sister, Zula Beck of Dallas, TX.

Visitation hours will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2005 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend David Mann officiating. Burial will follow in Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Ismael Villafranca

HARLINGEN, TX — Ismael Villafranca, 67, entered the Lord‘s Heavenly Kingdom Sunday, January 23, 2005 at his residence. He was a lifetime resident and member of a pioneer Harlingen Family.

Ismael was employed by Rio Grande Valley Sugar Mill for 32 years.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Adelina Villafranca; and son, Martin Villafranca. He was a great Father, Grandfather, Brother and friend and lived his life to the fullest.

Survived by 4 daughters: Janie Villafranca, Nora Munoz (Joe) both of Harlingen, Letty Chapa (Joel) of George West, TX, and Norma Falcon (Felipe) of Harlingen; 3 sons: Aniceto Villafranca (Mary) of Harlingen, Ismael Villafranca, Jr. (Nelda) of Gering, Neb., Noel Villafranca (Selina) of Harlingen; and a daughter-in-law, Alma Villafranca of Harlingen. A special companion Delia Rivera of Harlingen; 6 sisters: Lupita Treto, Lori Villafranca, Concepcion Medina, Irma Hernandez, Eredelia Villafranca all of Harlingen and Norma Rojas of Houston; 3 brothers: Isacc, Gilbert and Eduardo Villafranca all of Harlingen; 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Prayer of the Holy Rosary to begin at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria.

Honored to be pallbearers to carry Ismael to his final resting place are Louie Munoz, Eric Estrada, Joe Munoz, Manuel Martinez, Joel Chapa and Felipe Falcon.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home, 1002 East Harrison Ave., Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Stewart (Stu) David Mason

HARLINGEN, TX — Stewart (Stu) David Mason, 94, went to be with his Lord and Savior to that Shining city on a hill and the home he has prepared for him there on Wednesday, January 19, 2005.

Born on March 13, 1910 in Toronto, Canada, he was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Daisy Mason.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bernice; his daughter, Carolyne Beak (husband, William); and son, Stewart Mason, Jr. He is also survived by grandchild, Penelope Warner (husband, Kevin) and 2 great-grandchildren, Cassandra Warner and Joshua Warner; grandchild, Jeffrey Beak (wife, Trudy) and 2 step-great-grandchildren, Justin Geraldo (wife, Sonia) and Bryce Geraldo.

Mr. Mason played semi-professional hockey for many years in Canada and his hobbies were golf and tennis.

At the age of 23, after a message at the Peoples Church in Toronto, Canada, he saw his need for a Savior and surrendered his life to Christ. Feeling the need to study the bible, he entered Toronto Bible College and there he met his future wife, Bernice Hall. They married and have enjoyed over 70 years of sharing their lives together.

Mr. Mason served as a Petty Officer for two years in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. After being discharged he moved his family to Lansing, Michigan where he was employed at the Lansing Board of Water and Light for 27 years, retiring in 1975.

After retirment Mr. Mason moved to Harlingen,  Texas where he became a Deacon and adult bible teacher at the First Baptist Church. He also worked part-time and full-time for many years at H & V True Value Hardware in Harlingen.

He loved visiting and ministering to the sick, and to those confined to nursing homes. He loved the Lord and loved people, and in return was loved by many people, young and old.

There will be a memorial service for Stewart Mason at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen, 10:30 AM, Tuesday, January 25, 2005 with the Rev. Patrick Graham officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Lansing, Michigan with family and friends with William Beak, son-in-law, officiating.

The family request that memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 501 E. Van Buren, Harlingen, TX 78550 or to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Program, P.O. Drawer 2588, Harlingen, TX 78551.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Lydia V. Marks

MERCEDES, TX — Lydia Villalobos Marks 55, of Mercedes entered into rest Sunday, January 23, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born on August 3, 1949 in Santa Rosa, TX and was the owner of Lydia‘s Treasures on Old 83 entering La Feria.

She is preceded in death by her brother, Erasmo Villalobos.’

She is survived by her loving children, Julie Cantu of Mercedes, Cynthia (Carlos) Vela of Mission, Thelma (Juan) Vicente of Cobden, Ill., Nena (Jose) Roman of Mayfield, Kentucky, Jose Liscano (Lisa Rivera) of Mercedes, Lydia Liscano of Mercedes and 13 grandchildren. She is also survived by her parents, Guadalupe and Maria G. Villalobos of Mercedes; sisters, Candida Villalobos of Katy, TX, Adelina Segura and Irene Phillips both of Mercedes; brothers, Juan Villalobos of Mercedes, Guadalupe Villalobos, Jr. of Katy, TX and Abram Villalobos of Mercedes.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2005 departing the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace at 9:30 a.m., for a 10:00 a.m., Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Randy Gonzales as Celebrant interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jose Liscano, Jr., Carlos Vela, Jose Roman, Juan Vicente, Guadalupe Villalobos, Jr. and Jose Liscano.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Denis M. O‘Donnell

HARLINGEN, TX — Denis Michael O‘Donnell, 70, departed this life on January 21, 2005, after a brave struggle with heart and kidney disease. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late Henry Garner O‘Donnell and late Mary Florence O‘Donnell. He was raised in Harlingen,  Texas, where he still maintains many family members and friends. He was a graduate of Harlingen High School in the class of 1952. He attended the Univeristy of  Texas and Howard University and served in the U.S. Army.

After moving to the  Washington, DC, area, he worked in the U.S. Senate under Senator McNamara. He retired as a union organizer for the International Union of Electrical Workers, Inc., a division of the AFL-CIO. He was of the Catholic faith.

He was the proud father of three daughters: Karen Long (David), Kristine King (Charlie), and Karol Selby (Donald). In addition to his daughters, he is survived by his sister, Nancy Day and his brother-in-law, Edward Day; nine grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Jake and Tyler King; Melissa, Jenna Selby and Jillian Selby; Conor, Reece and Griffin Long; nieces, Shawn Turner, Shannon McKay and Jennifer Lawhorn; nephew, Andrew Day and many other dear family members and wonderful friends all around the country. He will be dearly missed as the "funnest Grandpa" and a good friend to many.

A Celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at the Huntt Funeral Home in Waldorf, Maryland from 6 - 8 p.m.

Funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Manuela M. Zuniga

LA FERIA, TX — Manuela M. Zuniga, 94, entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 24, 2005. She was born October 16, 1910. She was a longtime resident of La Feria.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ramiro (Friday) Zuniga; and is survived by her children, Ramiro, Jr. (Benna) and Irene G. Zuniga both of La Feria, David (Virginia) of Edinburg; her sister, Mrs. Cecilia Garcia of McAllen; 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She will truly be missed by those whose lives she touched.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. A memorial prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

The funeral procession will depart the funeral home on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at 12:00 p.m. for a graveside service at 12:30 p.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.

Her grandchildren will have the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers, and serving as honorary pallbearer will be Noe Anzaldua of Muleshoe, TX.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Juan R. Gonzalez

MERCEDES, TX — Juan Ramiro Gonzalez passed away Saturday at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

He is survived by two sons, Ruben Homero Gonzalez of Pasco,  Washington, Juan Ramiro Gonzalez, Jr. of Mercedes; three daughters, Juanita Hanson of Donna, Rosa Nellie Cano of Mercedes, Iliana Najera of Weslaco; a sister, Natalia Gonzalez of Mercedes; also surviving are fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes, interment will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Frank Ruiz, Sr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Frank Ruiz, Sr., 72, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 20, 2005 in Harlingen,  Texas.

Frank was a party animal, hell raiser, loving father and husband to many. When he was your friend, he was your friend for life. His death is a loss to all who knew him. He is survived by three children, Frank Ruiz Jr. from Port Isabel, TX, Lisa Cook from San Angelo, TX and Gene Michael Ruiz from New Jersey.

He is preceded in death by Parents, Edgar and Irene Ruiz.

Graveside Service was held on Monday, January 24, 2005 at 1:00 PM at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito,  Texas.

Marshall D. Harrison

HARLINGEN, TX — Marshall D. Harrison, 57, of Harlingen,  Texas entered into the eternal kingdom of his Savior, and Creator, Jesus Christ. Marshall went home on Saturday, January 22, 2005 while embraced in the loving arms of his wife of 22 years, Karen A. Harrison.

Marshall retired in 2003 after he moved from Chicago, Illinois to Harlingen,  Texas.

Visitation will begin on Friday, January 28, 2005 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Harlingen Methodist Church, located at 321 E. Harrison.

The service will begin at 11 a.m. with Reverend Steve Purdy officiating, interment will then follow to Heavenly Grace Cemetery with military Honors conducted at the graveside by the American Legion Post 205 and VFW 2410 in La Feria,  Texas, where he will be laid to rest next to his mother-in-law, Joan Woltman.

Mr. Harrison is survived by his wife, Karen A. Harrison, Harlingen,  Texas; daughter, Amy Harrison, Harlingen,  Texas; son, Marc Harrison, Harlingen,  Texas; 4 siblings, Dennis (April) Harrison, Downers Grove, Illinois, Larry (Twila) Harrison, Shell Knob, Missouri, Lloyd (Terry) Harrison, Alsip, Illinois, Debbie Slinker, Hammond, Wisconsin; mother, Evelyn B. Harrison, Chicago Ridge, Illinois; father, Gerald Harrison, Wonewoc, Wisconsin; father-in-law, Donald Woltman, Harlingen,  Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family of Marshall have entrusted their loved one to our family at Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas.

R.S. "Tony" Preston

PORT MANSFIELD, TX — R.S. "Tony" Preston, 80, passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX. Tony lived in Port Mansfield and was born November 19, 1924 in San Benito,  Texas to Edward John and Gertrude Vivian (Mattatall) Preston.

Funeral service will be private.

He was a veteran of World War II and served aboard the USS New Orleans. Tony retired from Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, TX.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Vivian Preston and his only son, Peter Preston.

Much can be said of Tony and it would still be to little. He will be mourned and missed by his wife of 52 years, Mary Stark Preston of Port Mansfield; his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and John Stewart of York, S.C.; one brother, Col. Edward Preston of Kingsville; one sister and brother-in-law, Jeannide and Ray Livingston of Kingsville. He is also survived by 2 grandchildren, Steven and Nathan Stewart of York, S.C.; 3 great grandchildren, Mary Michael and Preston all of York, S.C.

Arthur "Bud" Farrar

HARLINGEN, TX — Arthur "Bud" Noel Farrar, 78, passed away on December 22, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Bud was born November 15, 1926 in Steeville, MO to Arthur A. and Dalna Vinna Farrar. He served his country with the Marines.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Marie Farrar in 1996.

He is survived by his son, Michael Farrar of Topeka, KS; sister, Norma Whalen and a brother, David Farrar.

Memorial services will be held Friday, January 28, 2005 at Fun N Sun RV Park at 10 a.m. with Rev. Gene Horton and Vance Greek officiating. Burial will be Friday at Combes Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Wayne G. Finch

HARLINGEN, TX — Wayne Gerald Finch, age 91, passed away Tuesday morning, January 25, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen due to Congenital Heart Failure.

He was the son of Susan and James Finch, born on September 15, 1913 in Waverly, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Irene on November 27, 2004 also in Harlingen.

Wayne is survived by two sons, Roy Duane Finch and Jimmy Lee Finch both of Arizona; a daughter, Marion Laird of Florida; a sister of 95 years, Irene Thornton of Harlingen; two grandchildren, Anthony Wayne and Jeffery Alan Norman both of Dallas; a brother in law, Robert Stuart of Harlingen; niece, Carol Wade and nephew, Jim Finch both of Florida.

His wishes were to be cremated and there will be no memorial services held.

Wayne leaves many friends in the Harlingen area and his welcome smile and easy going manner will be missed by all his friends and relatives alike.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Skinner Silva Funeral Home of Pharr.
