Calixta Saldana

SANTA ROSA, TX — Calixta Saldana, 96, entered into rest on Monday at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.

Mrs. Saldana was a longtime resident of Santa Rosa and was preceded in death by her husband Bruno Saldana. She is survived by her loving children, Consuelo (Francisco) Cabrera of Los Fresnos, TX, Belen Saldana of Sebastian, TX, Antonio (Abelia) Saldana of Corpus Christi, TX, Alfredo (Rosa) Saldana of Santa Rosa, TX, Anita (Baldemar) Lopez of Indiana; 37 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Virginia Garcia of Baytown, TX.

Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, February 2, 2005 from 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a Prayer service to be held at 7:00 PM.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 3, 2005 at 2:00 PM at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with Pastor Cecilio Alfaro officiating. Interment will follow at Santo Nombre Cemetery in Santa Rosa, TX.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Saldana‘s family members.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Felipe Tamez

SAN BENITO, TX — Felipe Tamez entered into eternal rest on January 31, 2005. He was 91 years of age and was a life long resident of San Benito.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Candelaria R. Tamez; his children, Raul Tamez (Irma) of Plano, TX, Armando Tamez (Blanca) of San Benito, Oscar Tamez (Norma) of San Benito, Edelmiro Tamez of San Benito, Irma Chapa (Waldo) of San Benito, and Rolando Tamez (Josie) of Harlingen; 24 Grandchildren and numerous Great-Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ciria Salinas, Paulita T. Gomez; brothers, Jose Tamez, Jesus Tamez, Inocencio Tamez, Cipriano Tamez, Refugio Tamez.

He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Eddie C. Tamez. Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa will be dearly missed.

Visitation will begin today, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Wed., at San Benito Funeral Home and 10 a.m. - 9 p.m., Thursday with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel.

A Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Friday, February 4, 2005 at St. Theresa Catholic Church with interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Arrangements under the care of San Benito Funeral Home.

Paula Aparicio

MERCEDES, TX — Paula (Paulita) V. Aparicio, 85 passed away Jan. 31, 2005 in Houston,  Texas, after a battle with cancer.

She was a 70 year resident of Mercedes and a dedicated nurse who worked at Edinburg Hospital for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Apolonio and Secundina Vera; 2 sons, Romel Aparicio (Nelida), Jaime O. Aparicio (Irma); and a brother, Rodolfo Vera.

She is survived by two sons, Omar Aparicio and wife, Alicica of Harlingen, Rodolfo ( Rudy) Aparicio and wife, Dianna of Houston; and one daughter, Erendira D. Stevens and husband, Charles of Atlanta, GA. Also surviving are two brothers, Roberto Vera of San Antonio and Raul Vera of Mercedes; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin Thursday from 1:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Funeral service will be held Friday, Feb. 4, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home chapel with burial following at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Mercedes under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home. She will be dearly missed.

Elena Cerchione

RANCHO VIEJO, TX — Mrs. Elena Cerchione, wife of the late Italian Ambassador Amedeo Cherchione, found finally rest and freedom in God‘s everlasting arms on Sunday, January 30, 2005.

Mrs. Cerchione and her husband spent most of their lives working for and representing the Italian Governement in innumerable countries such as Germany, France, Somalia, Iraq, Equador, and the United States. They retired in the United States in 1992 to be close to their family and resided in Boston for several years. Mrs. Cerchione had moved to the Valley in 2002 and resided with her daughter, Sofia and son-in-law, Michael in Rancho Viejo,  Texas.

She is survived as well by her two granddaughters, Alexandra and Nicole from New York City.

There will be a 3 p.m. memorial service on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Brownsville,  Texas located at 1218 E.  Jefferson (956) 546-3178 with Deacon Paul McArdle officiating.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of Thomae Garza Funeral Home, 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito,  Texas.

Mae Ulsh Moench

HARLINGEN, TX — Mae Ulsh Moench of Harlingen passed away January 31, 2005 in The Woodlands,  Texas.

Mae was born March 31, 1918, in Newark, OH to Henry E. and Eva Mae Steinway. Her mother died shortly after her birth and her father joined WW I when she was 6 weeks old. Her paternal grandparents then raised Mae. At age 12, she moved to Valparaiso and graduated Valparaiso High School in 1936.

On March 22, 1940, she married Charles Bernard Ulsh of Valparaiso and to this union 4 children were born. Mr. Ulsh passed away on March 29, 1966. On August 2, 1969 Mae married Ferdinand C. Moench Jr. of Valparaiso, IN and following his retirement in November 1977 they relocated to San Benito, TX. Mae worked for four years as a secretary at the First United Methodist Church.

Mae and Ferd moved in 1998 to the Camelot Retirement Community and in March 2001 relocated to the Camelot Assisted Living now Canterbury Court where she continued to live following Ferd‘s death in April 2001. Mae enjoyed the many friends and the caring staff at Canterbury Court.

Mae was preceded in death by daughter, Patricia Ulsh Fry of San Benito, TX and is survived by three children, Lynne  Taylor and husband, Doug of Richmond, VA, Gordon Ulsh and wife, Laurie of The Woodlands, TX and Pamela Sievers of Columbus, OH and son in law, Ben Fry of San Benito TX. She leaves behind six grandchildren including: Lt. J. Scott Masterson, USCG  Washington, DC and his wife, Reinu, Jason A. and wife, Amy Sievers of Columbus, OH, Aaron M. Sievers and his wife, Lee Ann of Hilliard, OH, Abbey M. Ulsh of Houston, TX, Gordon A. Ulsh II of The Woodlands, TX and Elizabeth Lynne Fry of Denton, TX. She also leaves three great grandchildren, Cameron, Madison and Christian Sievers of Columbus, OH.

Mae also leaves sister in laws Helen Eaton of LaPorte, IN, Adele Ulsh of Richmond, VA and brother in law, John O. Moench and wife, Mary of Longwood FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mae was member of Chapter CW PEO Sisterhood of San Benito, Chapter 164, and Order of Easter Star of Valparaiso, IN for 50 years, and The First United Methodist Church of San Benito, TX.

A memorial service will be held at the San Benito United Methodist Church, Pastor Jason Adams, at 1:00 Friday, February 4.

Donations may be made to American Hospice or a charity of choice, in lieu of flowers.

Maria H. Malacara

SAN BENITO, TX — Maria Hortencia Malacara entered to eternal rest on February 2, 2005. She was 82 years of age. She has joined her beloved husband, Margarito Malacara in eternal life with God.

She is survived by her loving son and daughters, Maria M. Gonzales, Silvia Reyna, Maria Margarita Pena, Rolando Malacara, Alma Gonzalez; and grandchildren, Aurelio, Leroy, Rudy and Adolfo Gonzales, Genaro Flores, Alex Hernandez, Griselda Pena, Brenda Pisano, Juan Pena, Sandra Zapata, Sergio, Javier, and Adrian Malacara, Eloy and Eric Martinez, Alma, Lupita and Juventino Gonzalez, Estreita Guajardo and Esmeralda Reyna; and 38 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Alma Reyes, Jose, Pedro, and Juan Gonzales and inlaws.

Visitations will begin Friday, February 4, 2005 from 2 p.m. with mass following at 7 p.m. at the San Benito Funeral Home. Burial will be followed at San Benito City Cemetery, Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 10 a.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.

Irvin Champagne

PEARLAND, TX — Irvin Champagne, of Pearland, TX, 85, went home to be with the Lord on January 28, 2005. He was born in Raceland, LA, on August 11, 1919.

He is survived by wife of 64 years, Edna Champagne; daughter, Sue Collins and husband, John; his grandson, Dan Collins and wife, Melody and their daughter, Frances, of Plano,  Texas; Irvin‘s granddaughter, Deeann Rippee and husband, Curtis and three daughters, Emma Grace, Abigail, and Ellie, of McKinney,  Texas. He has two adopted grandchildren, Gretchen and Travis Watson. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Lucille Mutz, Dolly  White, Betsy Lewis; and 1 brother, Gene Champagne. Irvin also has 2 stepsisters, Eunice Mouton, Euna Casey, Annabelle Jones; and 1 stepbrother, Lynick Faulk. Irvin has numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by 1 brother, J.C. Champagne.

He has been a member of Almeda Baptist Church since 1965, where Irvin served as a deacon. He loved his church family, and was eager to serve on the House and Grounds committee, where he kept flowers blooming around the church. Many of you have shared in hunting and fishing adventures with Irvin and have a few tales to tell. He served in World War II, in the Navy. Played catcher for a fast pitch softball team in San Perlita,  Texas. He was quarterback in his High School. He married his 6th grade school sweetheart, Edna. He spend the past 12 years living at Countryplace, where he enjoyed golf, walking, fishing, feeding the residents‘ dogs‘ cookies, and playing cards with friends. Some of Irvin‘s favorite sayings were "Come back to see me and bring something to eat," along with "Como Esta" and "Com see com sa". His favorite was, "I‘m glad you got to see me", and he was right, we‘re glad we got to see him.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at South Park Funeral Home in Pearland,  Texas with Interment in the South Park Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

John R. Ward

WESLACO, TX — John R. Ward, 81, passed away February 2, 2005 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 3:30 p.m. at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1200 S. Bridge in Weslaco with Pastor Gerry Christman officiating the service.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Dolores Ann Cox (Lori) Alcott

HARLINGEN, TX — Dolores Ann Cox (Lori) Alcott, 72, went to be with her Lord on February 6, 2005 at her residence, Angel Care Home. She was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Edward Elbert (Bert) Alcott III and her brother, Norman I. Cox (Beany).

Lori was born to William I. Cox and Marion Ruth Gallagher Cox on August 7, 1932 in Buffalo, New York.

Lori came to Harlingen in 1950. She was employed by the Harlingen National Bank for many years and while there she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of  Texas Pan Am. Lori owned and operated Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Store in the Village South Shopping Center and also managed, with her husband, their LoriMar Properties.

Her husband, Bert, was a second generation partner in Redelco, Inc.

The Alcott/Knight family developed the Village South and Village North Shopping Centers, Citadel Office Building, Redelco Office Center on Morgan Blvd., and Redelco Business Park on Loop 499.

They were also the original developers of Knightwood Estates. One of the streets in the development is named Lori Lane.

Bible study was an important part of Lori‘s life. She, with her friends, drove to McAllen almost every Wednesday for six years to complete The Bible Study Fellowship Course.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rio Hondo for 30 years.

Christian love was evident in Lori‘s life. She always expressed to everyone that she loved them. Lori never met a stranger. She could make a ‘new best friend‘ just standing in line at Luby‘s. When we think of Lori we also remember "Coco" who was with her at all times and was always groomed with purple bows in her ears. Lori was a fun loving person.

Lori is survived by her cherished daughter, Mary Ann Alcott Martin (Louis); her son, Mark Alcott; two grandchildren, Jim Martin (Tracy) and Jeni Martin; one great grandson, Chase Austen Martin; and her sister, Diana Norvell.

For those who wish to pay their respects, viewing will be held Thursday, February 10th from 12:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Rev. Gene Horton, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Rio Hondo, will conduct the services and Rev. Vance Greek will provide the music.

Service will be held on Friday, February 11th at 2:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in Mont Meta Memorial Park Mausoleum.

A special thanks to all those who cared for Lori at Angel Care Home, VBMC Hospice and Golden Palms Health Care Center.

Bert and Lori‘s favorite charity was the Rio Grande Children‘s Home.

Friends may make donations to the children‘s home, or charities of their choice.

Jesus T. Rodriguez

SAN BENITO, TX — Jesus T. Rodriguez, 62, entered into eternal rest on February 8, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Rodriguez was a lifetime resident of San Benito,  Texas and was also a Vietnam Veteran.

Surviors include his wife, Dora R. Rodriguez; 4 daughters, Stephanie Rodriguez, Jessica Rodriguez, Monica (Richard) Pequeno, Yolanda Amaya; son, Raymundo (Nereyda) Amaya; 3 sisters, Aurelia Mancillas, Maria Cantu, Raquel Villarreal; 3 brothers, Jose Rodriguez, Demetrio Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez; 13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacinto and Faustina Rodriguez.

Visitation will be held today, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, February 10, 2005 with a Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will begin 10 a.m., Friday, February 11, 2005 at St. Benedict‘s Catholic Church with interment following to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Romalda Gonzales

MERCEDES, TX — Romalda Gonzales (Maya Cadena), age 93, born on August 27, 1911 in Mercedes,  Texas. Born to Eternal Life on February 6, 2005.

Beloved wife of the late Manuel Gonzales. Loving mother of Delfina Guzman-Estevez (Sixto L. Acevedo) and former son-in-law, Andres Guzman. Foster mother of Celedino Rivera of California. Loving grandmother of Andres "Andy" Manuel Guzman.

Survived by brother, Reyes Cadena of Mercedes,  Texas (age 96); nieces and nephews, Adan, Nene, Cota, Joy, Mercedes, Maria, Vicenta, Mateo, Tito, Zaida, Panchito, Benito, Rosa and Jovita Guzman; many others who loved and cherished her in her happy life.

Family and friends are very much appreciated. Mom and grandma, you will be greatly missed.

Visitation on Friday, February 11, 2005 at the Borgwardt Funeral Home, 1817 W. National Ave from 5-9 PM.

On Saturday, February 12, 2005 all are invited to meet at ther Funeral Home at 10 AM.

A procession will follow to a Memorial Service at Primera Iglesia Pentecostal La Gran Comision, 1702 S. 19th lead by Pastor Andres Marquez. Procession will continue to St. Adalbert Cemetery, 3801 S. 6th St.
