Eloisa De Leon

HARLINGEN, TX — Eloisa De Leon, age 86, entered the Lord‘s Kingdom February 8, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Jimenez, Mexico but had resided in Harlingen for the past seven years.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Luis De Leon; and a daughter, Josefina Jaramillo.

She is survived by 5 sons: Norberto De Leon (Theresa) of Pharr, Octavio De Leon (Delia) of Weslaco, Valentin De Leon (Margarita) of Weslaco, Jose Luis De Leon (Graciela) of Weslaco, Eloy De Leon (Manuela) of Pharr; 3 daughters: Amelia Hernandez (Miguel) of Harlingen, Elida Lopez of Santa Domingo, Tamps., and Lydia Galvan of Weslaco.

Vistation was held Tuesday at Trinity at Harrison Funeral Chapel.

Burial will take place Thursday, February 10, 2005 in Santo Domingo Cemetery, Ejidio Santo Domingo, Tamps.

Local Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home, 1002 East Harrison Ave., Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

William Reed Lang, Jr.

RIO HONDO/HARLINGEN, TX — William Reed Lang, Jr., died February 8, 2005 in Harlingen,  Texas at the age of 78.

He was born in Brownsville,  Texas, March 19, 1926.

He lived all his life in the Rio Hondo area except when he served in the Navy during World War II and attended The University of  Texas in Austin where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Reed and Thora Lang; two brothers, James Webster and Charles Richard; a sister, Elizabeth Joyce; two children, James Richard and Paula Joyce Lang; one granddaughter, Kimberly Marie Krafka; and son-in-law, Gary Henry Krafka.

He is survived by his wife, Violet, of 57 years; a son, William Reed Lang III and wife, D‘Ardi, of Spring,  Texas; a daughter, Brenda Krafka of Rio Hondo,  Texas; five grandchildren: Kathryn Hardin and husband, Chad, and William Reed Lang IV, all of Spring,  Texas, Katlyn, Krystyn, and Kevin Krafka of Rio Hondo,  Texas; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Community Church of Rio Hondo and was elected to the Church Board many terms, serving as Secretary, Treasurer and President in different terms. He also taught a Sunday School class.

He was a member of the Rio Hondo and Harlingen Masonic Lodge, having been two times a Past Master, Rio Hondo and Harlingen Order of the Eastern Star, having been two times a Past Patron, and the Scottish Rite Bodies of Masonry.

He held a Lifetime Esoteric Certificate from the Grand Lodge of  Texas and had been District Deputy Grand Master of the 40th Masonic District.

He started farming in the Rio Hondo area in 1950. In 1970, he started a direct mail order business, shipping gift fruit from his farm and operated an orchard care service.

He worked to improve his community and businesses by serving on many different boards locally, across the state, and nationally.

He served on the  Texas State Farm Bureau Board seven years, held several elected offices, and was awarded the Pioneer Award.

He was also on the Boards of Southern Farm Bureau Life and Casualty Insurance Company, Rio Hondo Co-Op Gin, National Cotton Board, Gulf Compress,  Texas Gift Package Shippers Association, Avocado Association,  Texas Citrus Commodity,  Texas Citrus Producers, and  Texas Citrus Foundation.

He was a member of the  Texas Citrus Mutual Executive Committee, the Weslaco Citrus Center Advisory Committee, and a producer delegate to The Cotton Council.

He served on the boards and was elected President of Arroyo Farmers‘ Association, Port Regional Co-Op Gin, Delta Compress, Cameron County Farm Bureau and  Texas Citrus Mutual.

He received  Texas Citrus Mutual‘s Special Award in 1991 and  Texas‘ Best in Citrus Award from The Fort Worth Star Telegram in 1993.

He enjoyed traveling and earned a Private Airplane Pilot‘s License to take the family on trips.

A Church Service will be conducted by Rev. Will Aten at the Community Church of Rio Hondo, February 11, 2005 at 1 p.m. followed by a Masonic Lodge graveside service at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.

The family will be at the home of Brenda Krafka after the services for visitation.

Pallbearers will be James Hartzog, Robert Nott, Ernest Lee, J.B., Gene, and Dennis Taubert.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Henry Thomae Funeral Home, 701 North Bowie, San Benito,  Texas 956-399-9992.

James Cole Abbott

MCALLEN – James Cole Abbott, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on February 17, 2005, at the age of 86. He was born on November 27, 1918, in Kansas City, Missouri to Lee and Winifred Abbott. He graduated from Tulsa Central High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tulsa and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a First LT. in the United States Air Corps and served as Commander of Air and Sea Rescue in the Gulf of Mexico from November 10, 1942 to January 3, 1946. Jim was a member of the Blue Key National Honorary Fraternity, State Bar of  Texas, American Bar Association as well as a senior partner with the law firm of Ewers and Toothaker and was associated with the law firm of Kittleman, Thomas, Gonzalez and Ramirez. He was licensed to practice law in the  Texas Supreme Court in 1954 and the United States Supreme Court in 1958. Jim was a Special Master for the United States District Court, a United States Commissioner from 1954 to 1959, and the Chairman of a special commission on Falcon Dam from 1952 to 1957. He served twice as President of the McAllen Country Club as well as Secretary and Director for many years. He served on the Board of J. P. Morgan Chase and various community boards, both corporate and civic.

Jim’s family and friends will always remember his passion for life, travel and fine arts, his avid reading of literature, his knowledge of current events, respect for the law, his love for golf and animals (especially Maxfli) and most importantly his "PaPa Jim kisses".

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Trudie Elmore Abbott, daughters Patricia Ann Abbott (Mike Compton, fiancé) of Georgetown,  Texas, Mary Stahl Cable (Chad) of Sulphur Springs,  Texas, Pamela Casey Voss (Chris) of Mission, sons Robert Abbott Fowler (Amy) of Lodi, California, James Cole Abbott, Jr. (Maricruz) of McAllen, grandchildren Casey Quintanar (Adrian) of Ft. Worth, Laura Kelsey of Ft. Worth, Robert Cole and Gracie Cable of Sulphur Springs, Drew Cable of Missoula, Montana, Lauren Barner (Andy) of Austin, Collier  Jones of College Station, Arley and Chapin Fowler of Lodi, Madison and Lucas Abbott of McAllen, sister- in- law Connye Busa (Bill) of South Padre Island, brother-in-law Glynn Morgan of McAllen, sister-in-law Halene  White of Leavenworth, Kansas, nieces and nephews, Bill Busa, Jr. of Austin, Connye Jean Busa of Maui, Hawaii, Patricia McConnico (Kit) of Austin, Tula Morgan of McAllen, Glynn Morgan, Jr. (Kelly) of Tampa, Florida, Leslie Abbott of Laughton,  Oklahoma, Linda Sutton of O’ Fallon, Missouri, and Randy Abbott of Leavenworth, and his loving caregivers Arron Martinez and Vanshe Gonzales whom Jim always exclaimed "were the best nurses in South  Texas" and his special friend in need, Ricardo Del Villar.

Jim was preceded in death by a brother William Abbott, his first wife Patricia Casey Abbott, a grandson James Abbott Jones, a sister-in-law Rene Elmore Morgan, a niece Debbie Morgan Hutchins, mother and father-in-law Robert and Gracie Elmore and mother-in-law Jean Riggs Elmore.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Rio Grande Children’s Home, 3780 North Bentsen Palm Drive, Mission,  Texas 78574, Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 692, Pharr,  Texas 78577 or the Vannie E. Cook, Jr. Cancer Foundation, 101 West Expressway 83, McAllen,  Texas 78503.

A Memorial Service was held at 4 p.m., Saturday, February 19, 2005 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pharr. Kreidler Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of the local arrangements.

Roberto Vasquez

SAN BENITO — Roberto Vasquez, 103, passed away peacefully at his residence in the loving embrace of his family late in the afternoon on February 18, 2005. Roberto was born on March 10, 1901 in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Mexico. Roberto had been a resident of San Benito,  Texas for the passed 95 years. He was proceeded in death by his loving wife, Josefina Ramos Vasquez and by his parents as well. Roberto Vasquez is survived by his children: Genoveva Conde, Timoteo (Guadalupe) Vasquez, Concepcion (Celestino) Fonseca, and Rogelio (Teresa) Vasquez, all of San Benito,  Texas. He was also survived by 24 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. Roberto dedicated most of his life to agriculture, and has passed his love of farming to his children, and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.

Pallbearers will be: Roel Vasquez, Ricardo Vasquez, Johnny Conde, Reynaldo Conde, Ruben Fonseca, Eloy Vasquez, and Joel Vasquez.

Visitation will begin on Monday, February 21, 2005 at 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary in the North Chapel. On Tuesday, February 22, 2005 visitation will resume as of 8 a.m. with procession departing the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. mass scheduled to begin at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Rio Hondo,  Texas, with interment to follow at Mont-Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home.

Ruben Cruz "Candy Man" Gonzales

LOS FRESNOS — Ruben Cruz "Candy Man" Gonzales, 44, of Los Fresnos,  Texas entered into the eternal kingdom of Christ on February 17, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born on June 26, 1961 in San Benito,  Texas and was a lifetime resident of Los Fresnos,  Texas as well as a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Ruben was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. military Honors will be conducted at his graveside under the direction of American Legion Post 205 of Harlingen,  Texas.

He is survived by his wife: Gloria Cruz of Laureles, TX., mother Eloisa C. Gonzales of Los Fresnos, TX, two brothers Rene O. Gonzales, Jose R. Gonzales, one niece, Rosalinda Gonzales, and numerous cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jose Isabel Gonzales on April 20, 1988.

His pallbearers will be: Cesar "Chico" Garcia, Rene O. Gonzales, Jose R. Gonzales, Jose Silva Jr., Mike Ramirez, and Felix Alvarez Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be: Luis Romero, John Fitzgerald, and Margarito Pena.

Visitation will begin on Sunday, 2/20/05 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the North Chapel with a 7 p.m. rosary procession will depart from the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. on Monday for a 10 a.m. mass scheduled to begin at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Los Fresnos,  Texas. Interment will then follow to Los Cuates Cemetery. The family of Ruben Gonzalez have entrusted the care of their loved one to our family at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home.

Cristina R. Saldivar

INDIAN LAKE/LOS FRESNOS, TX — Cristina R. "Tina" Saldivar entered the kingdom of her Savior Jesus Christ late in the afternoon on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at her residence in the loving embrace of her family. Tina fought a short yet courageous battle with cancer and has now found Victory in the Lord. She was born on November 25, 1966 in H. Matamoros, Tamaulipas Mexico and was 38 at the time of her passing. She was the former cafeteria manager at Las Yescas elementary school and employed with the L.F.C.I.,S.D for many years prior to her illness, and a graduate of Los Fresnos High School in 1986.

She was preceded in death by her mother Cristina Sanchez Rodriguez, and a nephew, Cristian Rodriguez in February, 2005.

She is survived by the following husband; Jose Guadalupe "Joe" Saldivar, Jr of Los Fresnos, TX, daughter; Cristina "KiKi" Saldivar of Los Fresnos, TX, father; Jose A. Rodriguez, Sr., of Laureles, TX, Mother in law; Maria Elena Guzman of Brownsville, TX, two sisters; Alma Delia R. Flores of San Benito, TX., Nora Margarita Rodriguez of Rio Hondo, TX., four brothers; Jose Angel Rodriguez of Rio Hondo, TX., Antonio Rodriguez of Laureles, TX., Mario Alberto Rodriguez, of Laureles, TX., and Ramon Rodriguez of  Louisiana.

Pallbearers will be Jose Angel Rodriguez, Jr., Antonio Rodriguez, Mario Alberto Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Juan Carlos "Johnny" Sierra Jr., and George Anthony Sanchez Honorary Pallbearers, Jose A. Rodriguez, Sr., Jesus "Chuy" Abelardo Guzman Juan and Margie T. Sierra, and Juan & Siria G. Sierra.

Visitation will be from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the north chapel of our funeral home with a procession leaving to Los Fresnos at 1:30 p.m. for a 2:00 p.m. funeral mass at St. Cecilia‘s Catholic church with interment to follow at Los Cuates Cemetery.

Joe and KiKi would like to extend a heartfelt gratitude to everyone that supported Tina during her most difficult moments in life. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the professional staff of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home at 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas 78586 (956)399-1331.

Juan Silva

HARLINGEN, TX — Juan Silva, 43, entered into the Lords heavenly kingdom Tuesday Februay 22, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was a lifetime resident of Harlingen employed by the  Texas Tourist Bureau.

He is preceded in death by his parents Domingo and Maria Silva.

Survivors include Maria Uribe (Julian) of Fort Worth, Tx., Lydia Garza (Pedro) of San Antonio,Tx., Oralia Silva, Sylvia Silva, David Silva and Gil Silva (Maria) all of Harlingen, Benito Silva (Myra) of Primera, Domingo Silva Jr. (Rachael) of Galveston, Irene Silva of Fort Worth. Also several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today Thursday February 24, 2005 from 10 am to 9 pm. Prayer of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 pm.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity at Harrison 1002 E. Harrison Harlingen,Tx

Genoveva H. Vento

SAN BENITO, TX/ Washington — Genoveva H. Vento, 91, passed away in Moses Lake,  Washington, on February 18, 2005.

Survivors include her children; daughter; Angelica (Carmen) Muniz, Son; Guilibaldo (Brenda) Torres, son; Miguel Torres, daughter; Yolanda (Cesar) Martinez, daughter; Eloisa (Antonio) Farias, brother; Jesus Vento, sister; Maria Guzman, sister; Jesusa Pena, brother; Raymundo Vento, 31 grandchildren, 67 great great grandchildren and 13 great great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by parents; Domingo Vento and Fortunata Hernandez son, Guilibaldo Torres, brothers, Miguel Vento, Manuel Vento, Jose Vento, Elivorio Vento, and sister Juanita Vento.

Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2005 with a prayer service to begin 7:00 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will take place 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2005 at Evanjelio Completo Church located at 1302 S. 1st St. in Harlingen, TX.

Burial will follow to El Capote Cemetery in Mexico.

Imo Marie Mary Louise Lange

RIO HONDO, TX — Imo Marie Mary Louise Lange, 82 passed away on Tuesday, 2/22/2005 at Harlingen Medical Center.

She was born on Aug. 3, 1922 in Daton, Ohio And was a 20 yr. resident of Rio Hondo,  Texas and a member of the Extraordinary Women Bible Study of Rio Hondo,  Texas.

She was loved and appreciated by many. She will be deeply missed, and was preceded in death by her husband Robert Lange. Mrs. Lange was a Campfire Girls Leader for 10 years.

She is survived by 5 Daughters; Rose Doege (Eugene) of Harvord, Illinois Joyce Hahn (Terry)" of Marlene Louise Bartels (Larry) of Springfield, Missouri Roberta Ungefug (Barry) of Billings, Montana Deanna Loughran (Phil) of Harvord, Illinois Sister; Annie Doss (Bob) of Ohio, Brother; John Boedigheimier 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, 2/25/2005 at the first Baptist church of Rio Hondo,  Texas from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. with a 10:00 a.m. memorial service, officiated by Pastor Gene Horton, cremation will follow.

Funeral services are under the direction of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas. 78586 399-1331

Sidney F. Giles

HARLINGEN — Sidney F. Giles, 97, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Golden Palms Health Care Center. Sidney was born October 5, 1907 in St. Louis, MO to Watson and Bertha Giles.

Sidney was a resident of Harlingen since 1976, coming from Illinois. He was a longtime travel agent and held memberships in the Harlingen Rotary Club, Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889, Masonic Lodge #38 in Olive Branch; and was a member of the Rio Hondo Baptist Church. Sidney was a member of the U.S. Army serving in W.WII.

He is survived by two nephews, John Giles of Maryland, and Tim Giles of Kentucky. Sidney’s request was to be cremated and no local services will be held.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Leonor (Norma) Lucas

HOUSTON/HARLINGEN — Leonor (Norma) Lucas, 88, entered into the Lord’s heavenly kingdom Friday March 4, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She lived in Houston most of her life but lived in Harlingen for the past 7 years.

She is preceded in death by her father Mr. I.E. Morales, mother Josefa Morales, brothers Rudy Morales and Henry Morales, sister Isabel Irene Morales.

Survivors include sisters: Sally Lopez, Amelia M. Gonzalez and Josie Shaw all of Houston and Angie Sacaar of Laguna Vista. Brothers: Manuel Morales of Milwaukee, Wis., Terry Morales of Ft. Worth, TX, and Jesse Morales of Brownsville, TX.

Visitation will be held Sunday March 6, 2005 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Chapel services will be held Monday 7, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home. Emtombment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial park Cemetery.

Family members will honorably participate as pallbearers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home.

Virginia Battcher Rousseau

NEWBRAUNFELS, TX — Virginia Battcher Rousseau died February 24, 2005 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

She was the wife of Wayne Rousseau and the daughter-in-law of Geneva Hardin Fichter.
