Her early years were spent growing up in Decorah in the Baker family home on Prospect Place, known as, "the house on the hill," built in 1890, by her grandfather, Albert Baker. Several of these childhood years were spent living with her parents and brother, David, in San Francisco, returning to the Baker family home in Decorah, where Jean completed her high school education.

Jean graduated from Stephen’s College, Columbia, Missouri and the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority; her major area of study, Home Economics. In 1952, they returned to Decorah, where they raised their three children, Jann, Burr and Rusty.

Jean and John were active members of the Decorah community with special interests being fundraising for the hospital, active participation in Vesterheim and active members of the Oneota Country Club. Their summers on  White Earth Lake, Minnesota, travel and their two grandsons, filled their life with many happy memories.

It was in 1993 that Jean and John moved to Harlingen,  Texas, where they enjoyed their active retirement years in Palm Valley, treasuring their new, long-time friendships and the Harlingen Country Club. John, "PJ," passed away two years ago. He and Jean, "Mamie" are survived by their three children, Jann and sons, Jay and Nick of Montana, Burr, Sun Valley, Idaho and Rusty and wife, Penny, of Seattle,  Washington. Her brother David Baker and wife, Mimi and family, continue to reside in the Decorah area.
