WESLACO — Manuel Rodriguez, 78, passed away March, 11, 2005 at Weslaco Nursing Center.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, March 13, 2005 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 14, 2005 at 2 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

John Joseph Young Jr.

BROWNSVILLE — John Joseph Young Jr., passed away on Friday, March 11, 2005 at the age of 89.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. tomorrow evening, Monday, March 14, 2005 at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, followed by a memorial rosary service at 7 p.m.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Mr. Young’s name be made to St. Joseph Academy, 101 St. Joseph Dr., Brownsville,  Texas 78520.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd., Brownsville, TX. 78520, 956-546-7111.

Mary Alma Alexander

RIO HONDO — Mary Alma Alexander, 94, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2005 at Golden Palms Health Care Center. Alma was born in Royse City,  Texas on February 7, 1911. She has lived in the Rio Hondo area since 1921. She was a founding member of the Rio Hondo Baptist Church; very active in the Choir and youth program.

Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her husband, R.E. "Buz" Alexander; parents, Asa and Emma Arnett; sisters, May Arnett, Ann Newell, and Nell Baugh: and brother, J.C. Arnett.

Survivors include her son, Roger and wife Sadie and grandchildren, Scott, Amy, and Jill of Poquoson, VA; her sister, Leora Taubert of Rio Hondo; and a host of charming nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours will be held Monday, March 14, 2005 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to receive friends, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. Graveside services only will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Gene Horton officiating at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be David Newell, Frontis Newell, David Manix, Ernest Taubert, Dennis Taubert, Jimmy Canville, and David Gusler.

For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to the Rio Hondo First Baptist Church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Walter Anthony Theall

HARLINGEN — Walter Anthony Theall, 76, passed away on Friday, March 11th 2005 after a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Ricketts Theall; his daughter Kimberly Leach of The Colony,  Texas and two sons; Walter P. Theall of California and James Theall of Boulder, Colorado, his brothers; David Theall of Dunedin, Florida, and Eric Ruschky of Columbia, S.C. and his four grandchildren; Tiffany and Blake Gaynor of The Colony, TX and Dylan and Cassidy Theall of Boulder, CO.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Theall and his first son Thomas David Theall.

Walter was born in Norwood, Massachusetts in 1928. He spent part of his youth playing drums in several big bands on the East Coast. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1950 where he traveled with his family throughout the United States and Japan and is a decorated Vietnam veteran. He retired from the Air Force in 1973. After retirement Walter bought and operated The Mexican Village restaurant in La Feria,  Texas. In 1975 he began working for Wood Implement in San Benito. In 1983 he began working at TSTC where he retired in 1992. Throughout his career, he was active in many civic organizations including Harlingen Chamber of Commerce Six Shooters Club and was founder and Chairman of The Good Neighbor Day Golf Tournament. He was also active in the Republican Party and was a convention delegate in the mid-nineties. He was also very active in the Sunshine Country Club Estates property owners association and the men’s golf club. He loved writing and woodworking. And many residents of the Rio Grande Valley enjoyed reading his well-intentioned yet sometimes controversial editorials in the Valley Morning Star.

A memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel. Donations may be made to The American Red Cross or Sunshine Country Club building fund.

Arrangements are under the direction of BuckAshcraft Funeral Home.

Maria Rodriquez Salinas

RAYMONDVILLE — Maria Rodriquez Salinas, 84, of Raymondville entered into rest March 11, 2005 in Harlingen. She was born in Norias, TX. to Manuel and Juanita Bella Rodriquez Dec. 8, 1920. Maria had lived in Willacy Co. all of her life.

She is survived by her sons Maurico Salinas Jr. and Joe Salinas both of Houston. One brother Evaristo Rodriquez of San Antonio and numerous nieces and nephews. 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today at Duddlesten Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral will be held Tuesday March 15th at Duddlesten Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Lyford Evergreen Cemetery.

Funeral service will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. from the Duddlesten Chapel.

John Joseph Young Jr.

BROWNSVILLE — John Joseph Young Jr. of Laguna Vista passed away at Harlingen Medical Center March 11, 2005 at the age of 89. He was born on July 31, 1915 in Brownsville,  Texas. The Youngs were a pioneer family in the Rio Grande Valley and have lived here for over 150 years.

He was known by his friends and family as "Papa" and will be remembered as always sharing vegetables from his garden and delivering tamales at Christmas time to his buddies. He was most happy on a ranch or in a sunflower field getting ready for a hunt or fishing in the bay behind his house. These fishing and hunting trips always ended up with friends and family gathering around for one of Papa’s famous fish fries or whatever was on the table that day. His laughter and smile will forever be missed; however we will never forget the wonderful memories we shared with him. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and his memory will live on for eternity.

He is preceded in death by his parents John Joseph and Sarita Starck Young, his sister Sarita Young Ellis, and his son Fred Dennis Young.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Ellen Solana Young, his sister Alberta Young Quisenberry, 3 children- John Joseph Young III (Cathy) of Rancho Viejo, Sally Young Graham (Malcolm) of Brownsville and Kay Young Ezell (Mike) of Port Isabel 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren also survive him.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2005, at Darling –Mouser Funeral Home, followed by a memorial rosary service at 7 p.m.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, March 25, 2005 at 6 p.m. at the home of John and Cathy Young, 900 Santa Ana Rancho Viejo,  Texas 78575.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Mr. Young’s name be made to St. Joseph Academy, 101 St. Joseph Dr. Brownsville,  Texas 78520.

Nevada Pemelton

WESLACO — Nevada Pemelton, 76, passed away on Saturday March 12, 2005 at McAllen Medical Center.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 14, 2005 from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at 3 p.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Juan Hinojosa

SAN BENITO, TX — Juan R. Hinojosa, 79, of San Benito, TX entered into rest on March 13, 2005 at Harlingen Medical Center. He was a simple man who enjoyed working, walking the outdoors, and also enjoyed the company of his friends at Salome‘s.

Survivors include his wife, Julia C. Hinojosa; 2 daughters, Cindy Hinojosa, Norma (Abraham) Benavides; 3 sons, Johnny (Nancy) Hinojosa, Jaime (Gracie) Hinojosa and Ricky (Mindy) Hinojosa; 4 grandchildren, Stephanie, Joshua, Candice and Bianca; sister, Dora Pedraza.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Florencio and Felipa R. Hinojosa; sisters, Anita Hinojosa, Lydia Rodriguez, Olivia Quiroz and Margarita Molina.

Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, March 15, 2005 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will begin 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at St. Benedict‘s Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, 399-1331.

Nevada M. Pemelton

WESLACO, TX — Nevada M. Pemelton, 76, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2005 at McAllen Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was a member of an early Valley family, residing in her early years in Edinburg and graduating from Edinburg High School in 1948. She married Delbert Pemelton in 1957. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to the Weslaco area where the family resides to this day.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1993.

Nevada, a well known waitress affectionately known as "Red" worked at The Robins Restaurant in McAllen, Milano‘s Italian Restaurant in Weslaco and retired from Keno Café in Weslaco, in 1993. Nevada was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was a matriarch of her family.

She is survived by her son, John Miracle of Geronimo, TX; three daughters, Belinda Pemelton Hamill, Kelly Pemelton and Debra Pemelton Krause, all of Weslaco. Also surviving are her brothers, Curtis Miracle and Holly Miracle; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Graveside services and interment will be held today, Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at 3 p.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Pedro Cavazos, Sr.

MERCEDES, TX — Pedro Cavazos, Sr., passed away March 14, 2005 at Retama Manor Health Care Center in Weslaco. He was born Nov. 26, 1925 in La Feria, TX to Eleno and Maria Cavazos.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was employed by Marvin Schwarz farm until retiring.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Enrique Cavazos and parents, Eleno and Maria Cavazos.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Alicia F. Cavazos; his children: Pedro (Dolores) Cavazos, Jr., Ricardo Cavazos, Gloria (Robert) Harris, Marta Cavazos, Alma (Ruben) Ureste, Belinda (Edelmiro) Pacheco, Jacinta Cavazos. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, 3 brothers; and 8 sisters.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Funeral Mass will be said Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes with interment following at Highland Memorial Park of Weslaco. American Legion Posrt 205 and V.F.W. Post 2410 will be conducting military honors in memory of a fallen soldier.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made in his memory to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 920 Anacuitas, Mercedes, TX 78570 or to a charity of your choice.

Pallbearers will be Pedro Cavazos, Jr., Ricardo Cavazos, Pedro Cavazos III, Narciso Ledesma, Edelmiro Pacheco and Ruben Ureste.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home.

Elnora A. Graham

LA FERIA, TX — Elnora A. Graham, was born to George Wesley and Minnie Alice (Mogford) Walker on December 22, 1921 in Menard,  Texas. Elnora entered into rest at Twinbrooke South Nursing Center in San Benito,  Texas on Saturday, March 12, 2005.

She is survived by her husband, Charles William Graham of La Feria, TX; sisters, Nina (Truett) Godley of Carrollton, Ruby Hancock of Brady, TX; sons, Terry (Sandra) Bowers of Edinburg, TX, Roben Bowers of Indianapolis, Indiana; daughters, Kayla Bowers of Mission, TX, Brenda (Frank) Ford of New Braunfels, TX, Gail (Bill) Brandt of La Feria, TX, Carroll (SMGT Kenneth) Shomin of Hill AFB in Utah, Terry (Jesse) Robles of Harlingen, TX; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at 10:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church of La Feria, TX. Inurnment of cremated remains will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, TX.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist Church of La Feria, TX.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Twinbrooke South Nursing Center of San Benito and Heart of the Valley Hospice for all their care and attention to Elnora.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of La Feria.

Ronnie J. Martinez

HARLINGEN, TX — Ronnie Joseph Martinez, 21, entered into eternal rest March 13, 2005 due to an automobile accident. He graduated from Harlingen South High School where he was also a member of the Varsity Basketball team. He was employed by Padres Cabinet Co.

Survived by his mother: Rosalinda Martinez Gonzalez; Step-Father: Eleazar Gonzalez Jr.; Brothers: George L. Mendez, Caleb Gonzalez; 1 Step-Sister: Rebeca Gonzalez; 2 Step-Brothers: Enoe Gonzalez and Jacob Gonzalez; Maternal Grandparents: Jose and Oralia Martinez; Father: Ronnie Gene Baldwin; Paternal Grandparents: Chuck and Ruth Baldwin all of Harlingen

II Timothy 4:7-8 I Have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith, now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me.

But also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Visitation will be held Tuesday March 15, 2005 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday March 16, 2005 at Assumption Catholic Church.

Burial will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Honored to be pallbearers will be George Mendez, Juan Paredes, Quinten Olivarez, Joe Salinas, Eddie Benitez, and Kenneth S. Pieller.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home, 1002 E. Harrison Ave., Harlingen, TX.

Telesforo Castillo, Sr.

EL RANCHITO, TX — Telesforo Castillo, Sr., 90, entered into the eternal kingdom of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by his loving family at his residence on Sunday, March 13, 2005.

He was born on April 18, 1914 in Brownsville,  Texas and has been a native of the Valley for 90 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Ramona Pena Castillo; daughter: Guadalupe C. Lucio; son: Telesforo Castillo, Jr.; and his parents: Nestor and Guadalupe Reyes Castillo and is currently survived by: 8 daughters: Sara Rodriguez, Cruz Rodriguez, Francisca Ibarra, Juana Castillo, Ramona Gutierrez, Micaela Chavez, Carolina Mancillas, Veronica Cordero, Sebastian Castillo, Jesus Castillo; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be: Humberto Chavez, Sebastian Castillo, Jr., Mario Ibarra, Armando Rodriguez, Telesforo Castillo, III, and Jesus Castillo.

Visitation will begin today, March 15, 2005 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a chapel service at 2:00 p.m. interment will follow to Esparza Cemetary in El Ranchito,  Texas.

Funeral services have been entrusted to Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors at 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito,  Texas 399-1331.
