HARLINGEN — James Allen Webb, 74, entered into eternal rest Thursday March 17, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was a lifetime resident of Harlingen. He had retired from Hicks Oil Co. He was a veteran who honorably served his country in the Korean Conflict and was a member of the V. F. W. Post 2410.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Sophie H. Webb of Harlingen. 3 brothers: Marvin Webb of Laredo, Carrol Webb of Columbus, Georgia, and Lloyd Webb of Fort Worth, TX.

Visitation will be held Sunday March 20, 2005 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Graveside services will be held Monday March 21, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Combes Cemetery with Pastor Pat Graham of First Baptist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home 1002 E. Harrison Harlingen, Tx.

Miguel Angel Moreno

Harlingen — Miguel Angel Moreno, 43, entered into rest on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX. Miguel dedicated his life to his mother and his family. He loved his sisters deeply and instilled in his sisters a need for family unity. He enjoyed dancing. Miguel was very devoted to the Virgin de Guadalupe and to his faith.

Mr. Moreno was preceded in death by his father Antonio Moreno, Sr. and sister Isabel Moreno.

He is survived by his mother Amparo N. Moreno of Harlingen, TX, sisters Matilde M. (Guillermo) Chavez, Amparo M. (Jorge) Hernandez, Blanca Moreno of Mexico City, MX., Martha M. (Gilbert) Garza, Irene M. (Luis) Herrera, Elena M. (Felipe) Hernandez all of Harlingen, TX, Norma M. (Sergio) Llanes and brother Antonio Moreno, II of Chicago, Ill.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, March 20, 2005 from 10 A.M. until 9 P.M. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Angels with the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 P.M. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Monday, March 21, 2005 at 9:30 AM for a 10 A.M. Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. Pedro Briseno as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park in Harlingen, TX.

Pallbearers will be Antonio Moreno, Gilberto Garza, Felipe Hernandez, Luis Herrera, Sergio Llanes and Gilberto Garza; Jr. Miguel was a loving son and brother. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jose Galazar Jr.

LAURELES — Jose Galarza, Jr, 38, passed away peacefully Saturday March 19, 2005 at his brother’s residence.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Macaria and Jose Galarza, Sr.

Jose was survived by his brothers, David Galarza, Carlos Galarza, and Raul Galarza.

Also, numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 10 am-9pm with a Rosary Service at 7pm today March 21, 2005

at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel A.

Jackie Fay Miller Duhon

HARLINGEN — Jackie Fay Miller Duhon, 50, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born January 30, 1955 in Oroville, California to Clyde Thomas Miller and Joan Campbell. Jackie was employed with Target as a Photo Lab Manager.

Jackie was preceded in death by her brother, Mike Miller.

She is survived by her husband, Ricky Duhon; her children, Kimberly Martinez, Craig Hughes, Kori Duhon and Kelsie Joann Duhon; mother, Joan Campbell of Fort Worth; father, Clyde Thomas Miller; siblings, Terry Orosco of Harlingen, Tony Miller of Kentucky, Pam Campbell Clancy of Fort Worth, Mark Miller of San Diego, CA, Paul Miller of San Diego, CA, Jason Campbell of Fort Worth and Jennie Wagster of Harlingen.

Visitation will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Monday, March 21, 2005 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Norman officiating. Burial will be in Mont Meta Memorial Park at a later date.

For those desiring to do so memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Daniel O’Keefe Manix

RIO HONDO/HARLINGEN — After a long struggle with the complications of diabetes, Daniel O’Keefe Manix passed away peacefully on March 17, 2005, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 15, 1930 in Victoria,  Texas to Amos and Jessie Manix. His parents and brothers moved to the Rio Hondo area in 1939 where he graduated from high school in 1947.

Dan’s passion was sports. After a notable high school athletic career, both he and his brother Jimmie played football at Brownsville Junior College. In 1949, Dan was named to the  Texas Junior College All-Star Football team. Dan also played basketball and ran track for the Brownsville Jr. College Scorpions. In 1950, he transferred to Trinity University in San Antonio, where he played football for the Trinity Tigers.

Upon graduating from college, he taught school and served as an athletic coach in Edcouch Elsa, then McAllen. He also administered the summer recreational program for the city of McAllen. As his family grew, Dan joined the family business and was co-owner of Rio Hondo Implement and involved in other farming ventures until his retirement in 1981.

Dan was an active member of his community. He belonged to the Rio Hondo Masonic Lodge and served as Worship Master. He served as city commissioner in Rio Hondo during the late 1960’s and was on the commission during the aftermath of Hurricane Beulah. He was also a member of the Harlingen Elks Lodge. An avid golfer, Dan belonged to the Harlingen Country Club and served as a Local Director of the Life Begins at 40-golf tournament for a number of years.

Dan is preceded in death by his father Amos, his mother Jessie, and brother Edward.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Glenda; daughters, Marsha (Percy) Marchbanks, Cheryl (Ray) Bailey both of Harlingen; sons, Dennis Manix of Corpus Christi, David Manix of Rio Hondo and Dan Manix of Fredericksburg; brothers, William Manix of Corpus Christi and Jimmie Manix of Valparaiso, Florida. Survivors also include five grandchildren, two step grandchildren, a great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, Dan leaves a number of friends many of whom he had the pleasure of playing golf with over the years and when he could no longer play, his grin rummy friends.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Odyssey Hospice for their thoughtful care and Harold Straker for his kindness, assistance and friendship.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Manix, David Manix, Dan Manix, Jacob Howell, Michael Bailey and David Newell.

Visitation will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Sunday, March 20, 2005 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the family being present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park on Monday, March 21, 2005 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Gene Horton officiating.

In lieu of flowers contribution may be made to the charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Rosa R. Salazar

HARLINGEN — Rosa R. Salazar 83, was called home to the Lord’s Heavenly Kingdom March 20, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born October 27, 1921 to Bonifacio Rodriguez and Elena SIlva Rodriguez. Rosa was a lifetime resident of Harlingen.

She is preceded in death by her husband Arturo Salazar Sr. and a son, Federico Salazar.

Survived by 2 sons: Juan Arturo Salazar of Rangerville and Juan Salazar of Harlingen 1 stepson: Arturo Salazar, 1 stepdaughter: Eloisa Briones both of  Washington, 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin today at 4 PM at Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home. Prayer of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 P.M. Funeral Mass is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday the 22nd at 11 A.M. at San Felipe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Las Rusias Cemetery.

Honored to be pallbearers will be her grandchildren: Juan Arturo Jr., Jesus, Abel, Albino, Jaime and Javier Salazar.

Helen M. Burr

HARLINGEN — Helen M. Burr, 97, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005 at a local nursing center. Helen had been a resident of Harlingen since the early 1960’s moving here from Kansas City, MO. She was a Charter resident of Golden Palms Retirement Center in Harlingen. She also was a member of the Garden Club in Harlingen and a member of the First Christian Church in San Benito.

Helen is survived by one niece and one nephew.

No local services will be held. Helen will be buried next to her husband in Kansas City, MO at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Harlingen Public Library or to the charity of choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Lawrence E. "Rooster" Rolando

CORPUS CHRISTI — Lawrence E. "Rooster" Rolando, of Corpus Christi,  Texas passed away Friday, March 18, 2005 at a local hospital.

Lawrence was born August 3, 1926 at Schulter,  Oklahoma, to Jeling and Mayme Trumblac Rolando. He worked for Champlin Refinery as a Safety Engineer for 32 years before his retirement. Rooster was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a loving father, grandfather, and brother.

He is survived by two sons, Randy E. Rolando of Harlingen,  Texas and Larry H. Rolando of Spring Hill, Tennessee; a sister, Elizabeth Dunham of Austin,  Texas; a long-time friend and care giver, Fran Hillin of Corpus Christi,  Texas; his children’s mother, Billie Rolando of Corpus Christi,  Texas, three grandchildren; one great grandchild.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., with the family receiving relatives and friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, March 21, 2005, at Memory Gardens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at Memory Gardens Funeral Home Chapel, interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Adolfo G. Betancourt

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Judge Adolfo G. Betancourt, 82, of Brownsville, entered into eternal rest at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen on Monday, March 21, 2005.

Funeral arrangements include a rosary, Wednesday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at the Brownsville Event Center with Funeral Services, Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 10 a.m., at Brownsville Event Center.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd., 546-7111.

Edward Scott O‘Keefe

HARLINGEN, TX — Edward Scott O‘Keefe, 80, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born on May 12,1924 in Boston, Massachusetts. Edward married Kathleen (Kitty) Baxter on October 2, 1942. He was also a Veteran of the Army Air Force 1943-1946.

Edward was baptized a Catholic, and retained an affection for that belief even when he lapsed from it. He attended Harvard and Berkeley where he received a Ph.D. in Math and became a mathematician. He worked for Boeing, and solved some big mathematical problems for them. They gave him a bonus, which he took and used to set up a worker-owned factory. It failed, and he lost all the money, but he never mentioned it again.

He became a carpenter, and worked in the Sanctuary movement on behalf of illegal immigrants. He fought for the dignity of the poor all his life. He could not always be relied upon by the rich and strong, but of the poor and humiliated, he bent all his intelligence and charm to be an effective bulwark. For them, his tact never failed. Lately, he was working on getting war medals for African-American veterans, and he used the last significant sum of money that came into his hands to help set up a refugio for undocumented workers at the  Texas border.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen.

Graveside services will be held today, Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 10 AM at Ashland Memorial Park with Deacon Valenzuela officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home.

Dyton Killingsworth

HARLINGEN, TX — Dyton Davant Killingsworth, 85, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2005 at Harlingen Nursing Center.

Dyton was born in Texana, OK and May 25, 1919 to Wylie and Bedie Killingsworth. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then became a resident of Harlingen in 1942.

Dyton worked for Sears for many years until his retirement and was a longtime member of the 8th & Harrison Church of Christ.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald and Pat Killingsworth of Mathis,  Texas and Roger Killingsworth of Mathis,  Texas; sister, Vera Byars of Houston,  Texas; 4 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Dyton was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marie on October 8, 1996.

Visitation hours will be held from 5 p.m .to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, Tuesday, March 22, 2005 with the family present. Graveside services only will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park, 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2005 with Jake Vincent officiating.

Pallbearers will be Jim Vinger, Jerry Vinger, Donnie Watkins, Clay McCulloch, John Byars and Jake Vincent. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Sunny Glen Children‘s Home in San Benito,  Texas in honor of Dyton Killingsworth.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
