LAMPASAS — Marlin Porter, 87, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at his residence in Lampasas. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in Briggs-Gamel-Wilcox Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Standard officiating. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery in Kempner. He was born April 2, 1914, in the Sweatout Community in Lampasas County to Virgil Porter and Alga Hutcheison Porter. He was a lifetime resident of Lampasas. He married Orean Lindsey June 22, 1935, at the Lampasas County Courthouse. He was a self-employed farmer and rancher and a member of the Agriculture Stabilization Commission for 17 years. Survivors include his wife, Orean Porter of Lampasas; sons, Maylon Porter and wife, Judy, of Lometa, Melvin Porter and wife, Kathy, of Kingsland and Jimmy Porter and wife, Brenda, of San Angelo; daughter, Arleta Green and husband, Ronald, of Lampasas; brothers, L.A. Porter of Lampasas and Clayton Porter of Eldorado; sisters, Neva Machen of Lampasas, Alena Hutchison of Dilly, Edna Carroll of Tucson, Ariz., and Reba Weeks of Lampasas; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; aunt, Vivian Nelson of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alton and Clinton Porter. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Second Baptist Church of Lampasas building fund.

OZONA — Ramona “Ama” Porras, 92, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with burial in Lima Cemetery.
Mrs. Porras was born on Oct. 10, 1909, in Sonora, Mexico, to Sostenes and Angelita Hernandez.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesus Diaz Porras; two daughters, Lupe Ramirez and Inez Hernandez; and two sons, Jesus Jr. and Jose Porras.
She is survived by daughters, Connie and husband, Jesus, Elizada of Cisco, Texas, and Angela and husband, George, Enriquez of Midland, Texas; sons, Joe and wife, Maria Elena, Porras of Sonora, Texas, Dario and wife, Hilda, Porras of Ozona, Isidro and wife, Fransica, Porras of Llano, Texas, Johnny Porras of Ozona, Santos and wife, Rosa, Porras of Cleburne, Texas, and Sostenes and wife, Lala, of Littlefield, Texas; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by Norma Martinez, who was a very special person to Ama. Also by a very special granddaughter, Elma Ybarra, who was very close and dear to Ama.

OZONA — Mary Nations ended her 78-year earthly journey, dying without pain in her home on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002. She was looking forward to being with her Lord, making the words of her favorite hymn “Nearer My God to Thee” become real.
She was born March 28, 1923, to Jimmie and Freida Wade of Alpine. She married Eddy Nations March 17, 1946.
A resident of Ozona for 47 years and a teacher there for 30 years, Mrs. Nations, a.k.a. “Mother Nations” adopted every child who walked through the door of her classroom. It seems like everywhere you go in Ozona, people say “She was my teacher,” or “She was my dad/mom’s teacher.” She will be remembered for her feisty attitude and her toe in a jar.
Survivors include a son, Robert Nations of Kyle; a daughter, Michele Nations of Holliday; a sister, Margaret Smith of Baltimore, Md.; a great uncle, Charles Wade of Alpine; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the First Baptist Church of Ozona, with burial at 4 p.m. in Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine. Bring your best memories of Mrs. Nations.

MASON — Michael Matthew “Matt” Morris, 33, of Mason, Texas, passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born Nov. 3, 1968, and lived most of his life in Mason. Matt graduated from Mason High School in May 1987. He attended Texas Tech University and graduated in December 1991 with a bachelor’s of science in agricultural systems management. He completed his graduate studies in agricultural education in May 1993. Matt worked as a vocational agriculture teacher in Dumas and Wall, Texas, for six years following graduation. Later, he was hired by Sure-Fed (Allied Feeds) in Brady as feed store manager. In 1998, he was employed with First Ag Credit in Brady as a loan officer. Matt joined the Brady Land Bank in 2001 as an assistant vice president, where he was employed up to the time of his sudden death.
Matt was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and sports with his family and friends. One of Matt’s greatest joys in his life was his niece and nephews who live in Austin, Texas. He enjoyed attending their sports activities and teaching them to hunt and fish.
Matt is survived by his parents, Sam and Linda Morris of Mason; a sister, Lisa Grief and her husband, Gary; two nephews, Garrett and Austin; a niece, Samantha of Austin; a maternal grandmother, Hazel Barrington of Mason; and several uncles, aunts, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, S. L. Morris and Lola Morris Lackey and maternal grandfather, Madison Barrington.
Funeral service will be officiated by the Rev. Jim McClain at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at First United Methodist Church in Mason. Burial will follow in Gooch Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Mason, Texas, or to the charity of your choice. Pallbearers are Robert Masterson, Ted Flowers, Tim Flowers, Jeff Schmidt, Bill Fritz Lehmberg and Jay Tedder.
JERRY MAZUR

Jerry Mazur, 80, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 7, 2002.
He was born on Aug. 29, 1921, in Rowena to Henry and Frances Mazur. He married Irene Matthiesen on Nov. 26, 1946. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in Sept. 1942 and served until Feb 1946. He lived his whole life in the San Angelo area, retiring from Goodfellow Air Force Base in 1978. He was actively engaged in farming up to the time of his death.
He was a member of Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and Western Dance Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Benny Mazur.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Mazur; and children, Wayne and Sandy Mazur of San Antonio and their sons, Stacy and Clay of Fort Worth, Carolyn and Bob Bleacher of Coral Springs, Fla., their son, Brant of Orlando, Fla., Glenda and Jim Hambright of San Angelo, their sons, Bryan of San Angelo and Cory of Corpus Christi, David and Jenice Mazur, their sons, Matthew and Mitchell of San Angelo, Richard and Crystal Mazur and their daughters, Marissa and Tiffany of Austin, Patrick and Dana Mazur, and their son, Chase of Austin, Ann Marie and Ward Clemmons, their son, Sebastian of Fort Smith, Ark., and Larry Mazur of Dallas. His sisters include his twin, Jerline Halfmann and her husband, Eugene, of Big Spring, Jane Nolder of Del Rio and Dorine Schroeder and her husband, Harvey, of San Angelo; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Nothing meant more to him than being able to visit with his family and call his many friends, going to dances, playing dominoes, farming and traveling. “Daddy never met a stranger; everyone was his friend.” His happiest times were spent on the tractor plowing; dancing with his wife of 56 years, or keeping up with his many kids; he lived life to the fullest.
Pallbearers will be Cliff Hohensee, Jimmy Hohensee, Floyd Frerich, Vernon Jeschke, Tony Sherman and Jerry Sefcik. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus.
Rosary was at 7 p.m. Friday evening, Feb. 8, at Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart in San Angelo. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the church with Bishop Leroy Matthiesen officiating. The burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
We will miss you Daddy,
Wayne, Carolyn, Glenda, Richard, David, Patrick, Ann Marie and Larry.

SONORA — Ubaldo Luna Jr., 28, of Sonora passed from this life to an everlasting one of Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002. He was born Oct. 19, 1973. He was a great son, a great brother, a great nephew, a great uncle and a great friend.
Survivors include parents, Ubaldo Sr. and Linda Luna; sister, Marie Bantay and husband, Allan; niece, Myra Aileene; nephew, Justin Mathew Bantay; and brothers, David Angel and Aureliano Luna.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to family and friends, doctors and nurses of Sonora, San Angelo and Lubbock for the loving care and support they provided Ubaldo Jr. and his family during difficult times.
Church service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Father William DuBuisson officiating. Burial will follow in Sonora Cemetery.

MATTHEW A JONES
Airman First Class Matthew A. Jones of Salsburg Street, Plymouth, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2002, in a tragic automobile accident in San Angelo where he was stationed as a firefighter with the United States Air Force. Born in Tyler, Texas, on April 18, 1981, he was a son of Randy and Terri (Durbin) Jones of Plymouth. A graduate of Wyoming Valley West, class of 1999, he will be remembered by many as an outstanding athlete whose incredibly dominating prowess on the football field never matched the unassuming smiling personality that inspired his teammates and all who knew him. Shortly after graduation, Matt enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He completed basic training in Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and chose additional training as a firefighter at the Louis F. Garland Firefighting Academy in Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo. Matt also received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Ribbon and the Air Force Training Ribbon. He was a member of the Goodfellow teams where he played softball and flag football. Matt was graced with a wonderful combination of personality, whit and attitude that was topped off by a disarming smile that rarely left his face. The rapidly maturing young man that he had become, filled with the goals and aspirations of youth, leaves us filled with pride as son, brother, teammate and airman, forever young, with the dreams of all he would have accomplished. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Sharon Westenhaver Durbin, and his maternal step-grandmother, Ellen Hunt Durbin. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brothers, Randy of Hanover, Twp., Michael of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Tommy and Chris, both of Plymouth; grandparents, Jimmie JoAnn Harrison of Plymouth, Jane Jones of California and Alfred Durbin of Oklahoma City; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the Goodfellow Air Force Base theater.
ED HOOK

Ed Hook was born Jan. 4, 1947, to Florene Houston and James Edward Hook in San Angelo, Texas. San Angelo was his home until the age of 12, and his family then moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. During his school years he was active in sports and rodeo and he was a roper and a bareback rider.
Ed married his high school sweetheart, Linda McClellan, in 1966 and they always remained very close friends. She is, to this day, a very important part of the family. They had two sons while residing in Colorado, and after returning to Texas in 1970, their daughter was born. One of Ed’s greatest joys in life was the birth of his precious grandchildren.
Ed worked in retail sales, construction and he finally made a career in the automotive business. Ed devoted 24 years to his career of auto sales, 12 of which were spent serving Lynn Alexander’s Autoplex. On Feb. 14, 1993, he married Norma Jean Cate and they made their home at Hook’s Hideout on Dove Creek. Ed loved to share his favorite place, Dove Creek, with all of his friends and family.
While his children were young, he coached his children and many other young people in football, basketball and baseball. He was a mentor to many young people who looked up to him. Many special hours were spent with friends enjoying hunting, fishing, sporting events and rodeo events.
Ed was a member of West Side Baptist Church. Ed never met a stranger and always had a warm and wonderful smile on his face for everyone. He was loved and respected by everyone and will be missed very deeply.
His father, James Edward Hook, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean; his mother, Florene Hook; a son, Craig, granddaughter, Whitney and grandson, Bo; a son, Larry and daughter-in-law, Robin and grandsons, Weston and Walker; a daughter, Janet and son-in-law, Huie, grandson, Justin and granddaughters, Micaela, Shelby and Skylar; a daughter, Angelia and son-in-law, James, granddaughter, Brandi, grandson, Trevor and great-grandson, Ty. He also had a special son and daughter-in-law, Bear and Courtney Cummings and granddaughter, Myia.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Heights Baptist Church in San Angelo, Texas, with graveside service following in Lawnhaven Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bob Parker, Cain Cline, Denny Morris, Danny Barnhill, Steve Urbantke, Kenny Hill, Clay Cross and Don Pierson. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Stanford, Paul McClure, John Doss, Larry Keese, Danny Bird, Kelly Bird and Jerry Fickling.
The family would like to thank Dr. Cheruku and his staff, and Dr. Seifert and the staff of Shannon Medical Center Emergency Department.
The family is receiving guests at the home of Larry and Robin Hook, and asks that any memorials be given to the West Texas Boys Ranch.

Ann Kimbrell was born to Grover Cleveland Kimbrell and Cora Henton Kimbrell in Hopkins County, Texas, on a small farm near Sulphur Springs on Nov. 29, 1924. Her formative years on a farm during the Great Depression were both hard work and a character-building experience. She lost her father to pneumonia in April 1936 and subsequently took many part-time jobs during the rest of her school years. After graduation from Sulphur Springs High School in May 1942, Ann went to work as a telephone operator in Sulphur Springs, and progressed to night shift supervisor. In November 1943 she moved to Dallas and became part of the “Arsenal of Democracy” when she went to work for North American Aviation on the production line for the P-51D Mustang. Working the “B” night shift 10 hours per day, six days a week did not leave much free time during the World War II years. After being laid off due to production order cancellations, Ann went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone as an operator in April 1945, where she later met George Warren Hall, an ex-Marine who was an equipment installer in Bell switching offices. They were married on Dec. 28, 1946, and moved to Sherman, Texas, where they both went to work for Texas Telephone Company. They were blessed with two children, a son, George Warren Hall Jr. in 1950 and a daughter, Patricia Ann Hall in 1951, who were cared for by their grandmother, Cora Kimbrell. The extended family included many relatives in the Mount Pleasant, Texas, area and many enjoyable summer vacations were spent there. After the merger that formed General Telephone of the Southwest, the extended Hall family moved to San Angelo in 1956. Ann worked in various jobs in the accounting and engineering departments before her retirement in 1984, and had many friends in the GTE family. Ann was preceded in death by her mother and father; husband, Warren in July 2000; sisters-in-law, Mary Louise Adams and Josephine Hall; and brother-in-law, Harry Hall. She is survived by her son, George Warren Hall Jr. of San Angelo; daughter, Patricia Ann Britt, son-in-law, Jim Britt and granddaughter, Ashley Britt of Wichita Falls; brother-in-law, Carl Adams; nieces, Gloria Adams Duncan of Mount Pleasant and Sandy Hall Hindsley of Flower Mound; and nephews, Mike and Alan Hall of Mount Pleasant and David Adams of Texarkana, Texas. Local visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Visitation in Mount Pleasant will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Curry-Wellborn Funeral Home. Service will be conducted by David Adams at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Bethel Church of Christ. Burial will be in Liberty Hill Cemetery.

Ruth Epsie Hageman, 83, of San Angelo died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in an area hospital. Following a family luncheon and visitation at the church at noon, the funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the First Baptist Church in Tennyson. Burial to follow in Bronte Cemetery. Ruth was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Roanoke, Texas, in Denton County to Thomas Asa and Sudie Rutland Brown. Ruth married Clifford E. Hageman on Dec. 8, 1937, in San Angelo. The happy couple lived in the Tennyson area and in Bronte for over 50 years. She was a housewife and a Christian. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford in March of 1987; four brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include two sons, Clifford Dwain Hageman and his wife, Sonja, of Pleasanton, Texas, and Don Hageman and his wife, Suzanne, of San Angelo; a daughter, Epsie Jo Hanna of San Angelo; a sister, Emma Lou Stewart of San Angelo; two sisters-in-law, Lora Belle Brown and Frances Hageman; two brothers-in-law, Rance Brunson and James Hageman; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
DENNIE M. EDWARDS

Dennie M. Edwards, 57, of San Angelo died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, in a local hospital.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Robert Lee Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Eugene, Bill and Greg Williams, Troy E. Montgomery, and Marlow and Frankie Wojtek.
Mr. Edwards was born May 7, 1944, in Levelland, Texas. Dennie married Sandra K. Cobb June 10, 1967, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. Edwards was a directional drilling engineer in the oil exploration business and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Lafayette, La.
Dennie has gone to be with his Heavenly Father. What a day of rejoicing that is, for he had a close relationship with his Maker.
Dennie loved God and nourished his family with that love. He so enjoyed holding a newborn baby, seeing the first blooms open up on his roses, watching the cardinals feeding their young and feeling a good piece of wood in his hands take shape as he built a new piece of furniture.
Dennie was preceded in death by his stepfather, John H. Edwards; his mother, Melba Edwards; and a brother, Henry H. Edwards Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra K. Edwards of San Angelo; a son, Dennie M. Edwards Jr. and his wife, Colleen, of Lafayette, La.; a daughter, Melissa Elyce Griffith and her husband, Christopher, of Temple; his father and stepmother, Delmar and Eleanore Swain of Modesto, Calif.; a brother, Delmar Swain Jr. of Modesto, Calif.; a sister, Debra Swain of Arnold, Calif.; a granddaughter, Katelyn Elyce Griffith of Temple; three nephews, Henry H. Edwards Jr., and Jason and Matthew Edwards, all of Big Spring; a niece, Candice Richardson of Saint Mary’s, Ga.; and mother-in-law, Beatrice Cobb of San Angelo.
Dennie will be missed by many other wonderful family members and friends.
