RENA FULLER COMPTON

BALLINGER — Rena Fuller Compton, born Oct. 8, 1922, passed away Wednesday, Feb 6, 2002, in Malvern, Ark. Her previous home was in Norton,  Texas, before moving two years ago to Malvern.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd E. Compton; a daughter, Patsy New of Longview; a sister, Marie Torkelson of San Angelo; and two brothers, Jack Fuller of San Angelo and Welby Fuller of Crews.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy, and son-in-law, Jerry Whatley, of Rolla, Ark.; a sister, Jetty Faubion of San Angelo; and a brother, Jake; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Fuller of San Angelo. Survivors also include five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Rains-Seale Funeral Home in Ballinger,  Texas, with burial in the Garden of Memories of Ballinger.

It has been requested that any memorials be sent to one’s local Hospice Care Association.

TOM BOMAR

BALLINGER — Tom Bomar, 86, of Ballinger,  Texas, passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at his home. He married Donnie Mae Herring on Sept. 15, 1934, in Ballinger. She preceded him in death in March of 1986. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Wess and Anne Dial Bomar and a sister, Mary Irene Bomar. A rancher in Coleman County and a number-one sheep shearer, Tom was known for his ranching abilities. In 1940, he began his oil business with O.P. Leonard and working for Guy Mabee from 1945 to 1950. Tom was the owner of a well service business, an auto supply store and a distributor for oil field supplies. He ranched south of Talpa until his accident in 1995. Survivors include two daughters, Vickie McQueen and husband, Joey, of Big Lake and Joyce Smith of Coleman; four sons, Rex Bomar and wife, Patsy, of Midland, Jimmy Bomar of Pleasanton, Pat Bomar and wife, Linda, of Denton and Gary Bomar and wife, Marci, of Abilene; one sister, Dot Schroeder of Ballinger; three brothers, James Bomar of Winters, Weldon Bomar of Cleburne and Bobby Bomar of Snyder; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation service will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at First Presbyterian Church with burial in Talpa Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice, Sheep and Goats Raisers Association or a favorite charity.

TYLER — Memorial service for State District Judge Gene Ater will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Pollard United Methodist Church in Tyler with the Rev. Rick Hume and the Rev. Richard Luna officiating.
Judge Ater died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, in ETMC Hospital in Tyler.

Judge Ater was born Jan. 20, 1932, in San Angelo,  Texas. He was reared in Pecos,  Texas, and graduated from Pecos High School in 1949. From 1951-54 he served as a corpsman in the United States Navy, including 26 months in Korea. On Nov. 24, 1955, he married Caroline Hall in Abilene,  Texas. He graduated from McMurry University in Abilene with a bachelor’s of business administration degree in 1956. Judge Ater received his law degree from Southern Methodist University in 1959.

He was an assistant district attorney in Dallas County for a year and then moved to Odessa in 1961 to enter private practice. In 1979, he was elected judge of the 70th Judicial District of  Texas and served in Odessa until May of 1992, when he retired to become a senior district judge. Judge Ater and his wife moved to Tyler in 1992. Although he took assignments around the state as a visiting judge, most of his work as a senior district judge was done in the courts in Tyler.

In Tyler, he was an active member of Pollard United Methodist Church. Judge Ater was a member of the State Bar of  Texas, the Smith County Bar Association and a former member of the American Trial Lawyers Association and  Texas Trial Lawyers Association. He was a member of the Tyler Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Judge Ater is survived by his wife of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Jimmy Petrick of Denton,  Texas; two grandchildren,  Taylor Petrick and Hunter Petrick, both of Denton; his mother, Norine Hoover and stepfather, Mitchell Hoover, of Pecos; a sister, Peggy Drake and husband, Jimmy, of Hobbs, N.M.; a brother, Jimmy Ater and wife, Carole, of Arlington,  Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends in the parlor of the Pollard United Methodist Church immediately after the memorial service. Plans for a memorial service in Odessa at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church are pending.

CLARICE WRIGHT

Clarice Wright passed away early Monday morning, June 10, 2002, at her home after a short illness. Funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, June 14, at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Grosse Mohler officiating. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Clarice was born on Dec. 15, 1913, in Bessemer, Ala., to Oliver and Roberta Walton. She earned a teaching and an accounting degree at Alabama Women’s College and taught school in Alabama for a number of years. She was also an accomplished violinist and was a member of a symphony orchestra while in Alabama. She married John Wright, an Army Air Corps/Air Force pilot, in 1941 and traveled extensively with her husband and children. She became active in many volunteer organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, the American Red Cross and the Gray Ladies hospital volunteers. After retiring as the head accountant with the Goodfellow Air Force Base Credit Union in 1982, she remained active in many civic and charitable organizations. She was past president of the Concho Valley Lions Club and past president of the San Angelo Altrusa Club. She was a yearly volunteer as a tax preparer for the IRS and a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program. At the time of her death, she was a member of the First Baptist Church Glory Choir, the United Methodist Women Organization, the Delia Bolding Sunday School Class and the San Angelo Community Medical Center Auxiliary, where she had volunteered for the past 20 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lt. Col. John V. Wright, and a sister, Iris Lee Holland of Panama City, Fla. Survivors include a daughter and two sons, Joan McCarson of Mountain Home,  Texas, her husband, Bob, her son, Cody Goetz and daughter, Amber Goetz; John Wright of Blacksburg, Va., his wife, Debbie, their son, Bobby, and daughters, Heather, Randy and Crystal and her daughter, Regina; and Carl Wright of San Angelo, his wife, Toni, and their two sons, Michael and Dustin. She is also survived by her nephew, Bill Holland of Panama City, Fla. Pallbearers will be Michael Wright, Dustin Wright, Cody Goetz, Ronnie Salvato, Gary Goetz and Billy Harper. The family would like to express its gratitude to the Hospice of San Angelo and to the many friends of Clarice for their love and support.

DR DAVID S. TULLIS

Dr. David S. Tullis passed away quietly following a lengthy illness on June 3, 2002, at the age of 91. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in Fairmount Cemetery with the Rev. Grosse Mohler of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Dr. Tullis grew up on a farm near Sentinel, Okla. He graduated from high school at Port, Okla., at the age of 15. He attended college first at the University of  Oklahoma and later at Southwestern State College of  Oklahoma, where he earned his bachelor’s of science degree in 1937. He taught school and coached for several years before eventually getting more into administration, serving as a high school principal for the Retrop Consolidated Schools in  Oklahoma. During this time, he had the extremely good fortune to meet and marry Beulah Delcy Baker in 1940. Having a positive and strong spirit, Beulah helped Dave to be more and to achieve more than would otherwise have been possible. From 1940-44, Dr. Tullis served as a high school principal and later as the superintendent of the Anton Independent School in Hockley County,  Texas. From 1944-46, he served in the United States Army in the Philippines. Following that experience, he returned to Anton to farm, attended graduate school on the G.I. Bill and served as an administrator in public schools in West  Texas. In 1950, he earned his master’s degree in education from  Texas Tech University. He then became the supervisor and counselor for Lamb County until 1961. From 1961 to 1965, he served as the director of guidance and curriculum for the Littlefield Independent School District. In 1964, he earned his doctorate’s in educational psychology from  Texas Tech University. In 1966, he moved to San Angelo to teach psychology as well as audio-visual courses at Angelo State University. From 1970-79, he served as a psychologist for the San Angelo Independent Schools. Following his retirement from public education, he continued for several years to do psychological testing for West  Texas Rehab and other agencies. He also spent much time working on his pecan orchard near Knickerbocker, along the banks of Dove Creek. Dave and Beulah nurtured those trees into producers of tasty pecans in such quantity that friends and family were never lacking. Throughout their lives, Dave and Beulah were actively involved in community and church projects, including delivering meals for the Meals on Wheels program, helping to prepare income tax returns for disadvantaged individuals, preparing meals for the homeless, serving as precinct chairmen for the Democratic Party, teaching defensive driving and participating in the Code Blue program. They were active members of the First United Methodist Church of San Angelo for more than 30 years. They were also actively involved in several other service and professional organizations, including the Lions Club, the Retired Teachers Association and the Native Plant Society. Dr. Tullis was a wise, strong and virtuous man who rose far beyond his simple beginnings to accomplish and contribute a great deal in a number of different areas. He was much loved and will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his beloved Beulah. Survivors include his two sons and their families, David and Barbara Tullis of Anchorage, Alaska, and their daughter, Jennifer, and Bill and Jane Tullis of Austin and their sons, Brandt and Gabe; and as well as numerous nephews and nieces. The family requests that memorials or donations be sent to the First United Methodist Church of San Angelo or to the hospice of your choice.

DELLA SKELTON

Della Wright Skelton was born Nov. 26, 1931, in Vaughn, Ark., to the late Milton and Pearl Wright. A longtime resident of Bronte, she passed suddenly from this life on Thursday, June 6, 2002, in San Angelo. She married A.G. (Glenn) Skelton June 14, 1953. A 20-year member of the Desk and Derrick Club, she enjoyed her work as office manager at Martin Lee/Pinon Petroleum for over 35 years. She was a past president of the Desk and Derrick Club in 1989 and was Derrick Dazzler in 2001, and she held other offices and committees. She graduated from Vaughn High School in Arkansas and attended John Brown University. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in the chapel of Johnson’s Funeral Home with the Rev. James Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Survivors include her husband, Glenn Skelton of Bronte; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Mindy Skelton of Albany,  Texas, and Gary and Janie Skelton of Kyle,  Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Tanya and Tobin Abbott of San Angelo; grandchildren, Ashleigh Skelton, Adam Skelton, Kody Skelton, Logan Skelton, Tina Abbott and Tim Abbott; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Jodie Blanek of Sterling City, and Jinger and M.C. Hendry of Sterling City; and sister-in-law, Betty Wright of Shreveport, La.; numerous nieces and nephews; and very close friends. Her son, Randy Skelton; and brothers, Philo Wright, Joe Wright, Glenn Wright and John Wright; and sister, Idena Belton preceded her in death.

JEANNE KING RUST

Jeanne King Rust, 76, of San Angelo passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2002. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, in Fairmount Cemetery with the Rev. Robert B. Hedges of Emmanuel Episcopal Church officiating. Jeanne was born to Mr. and Mrs. W.D. King of Dallas,  Texas, on April 30, 1926. Jeanne began modeling in Dallas and also began a professional radio singing career at the age of 13. During World War II, Jeanne sang with Tex Ritter and the Tommy Dorsey Band. She was recruited as a Paramount starlet and entertained the troops as a singer for the Red Cross. She married George Foster Rust in 1950 and they ranched along with their two sons near VanCourt. Years later, they moved to San Angelo and she became active in various community activities. Jeanne had been a member of St. John’s Hospital Auxiliary, the Altar Guild of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, served as secretary and past president of The  Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Auxiliary and had been involved with the Miss Wool of  Texas and Miss Wool of America Pageants. She was preceded in death by her son, Dwight E. (Toby) Rust. She is survived by her son, Frederick Wm. (Ricky) Rust of Grand Prairie; granddaughters, Ashlyn Rae Rust and Cymbre Nicole Rust, both of Dallas,  Texas; and her sister, Dorothy Wilhite of Florida; along with numerous nieces and a nephew. The family requests that memorials be made to The American Heart Association, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, or a favorite charity.

BALLINGER — Clara Ruppert, age 75, of Rowena died Thursday afternoon, June 6, 2002, in Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 10, at St. Joseph with Fr. Prasad Gallela and Fr. Benedict Zientek co-celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Clara was born on Sept. 16, 1926, in Miles,  Texas, to Paul F. and Mary Haechten Frenzel. She married George Ruppert in Rowena on Jan. 8, 1947. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena and a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society. She is survived by her husband, George of Rowena; her daughter, Lu Ann Moore of Brownwood; and her son, Donnie Ruppert and his wife, Marlene, of Sweetwater. She is also survived by the joy of her life, her grandsons, Brian Ruppert of San Angelo and Doug Ruppert of San Marcos.

James Quicksall, 53, of San Angelo passed away Saturday, June 1, 2002, in Harris Methodist Hospital in Euless. Service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at Johnson’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Lawrence Walker officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery. James was born July 19, 1948, in San Angelo to John and Thelma Quicksall. He married Gayle Hamilton on Aug. 27, 1966, in San Angelo. James was former owner of Quicksall Shell and was employed by Schneider Distributing Co. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Gayle Quicksall of San Angelo; two sons, James Ray Quicksall of Arlington and John Ervin Quicksall of Euless; two grandchildren, James Michael Quicksall and Christopher Brandon Quicksall; his mother, Thelma Quicksall of San Angelo; and two brothers, Raybon Quicksall of Tacoma, Wash., and Ronald Quicksall of San Antonio. Pallbearers will be Butch Young, Blaine Martin, Roy Ashley, John Walters, Ruben Burleson, Eddie Fowler, Roddy Arnett and Daniel Helm.

Lou Dell Pitts, 90, of San Angelo, formally of Odessa and El Paso, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2002, in Shannon Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. at Johnson’s Funeral Home, San Angelo,  Texas, with Larry Shotwell and Kyle Reese, First Baptist Church, officiating. Memorial will be Thursday, June 13, and burial at 1:30 p.m. in Sunset Gardens, Odessa,  Texas. Lou Dell was born Nov. 30, 1911, in Alvord,  Texas, to Otho and Ethel Green. She graduated from Howard Payne University, Brownwood,  Texas, with an elementary education degree. She taught school in El Paso and Odessa,  Texas, retiring after 28 years of teaching. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William D. (Bill) Pitts Sr. after 52 years of marriage. She lived at the Baptist Memorial Highrise for nine years and volunteered with the auxiliary. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Green of Lakeland, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ruth and Charles H. (Chuck) Ross of San Angelo,  Texas; and one son, William D. Pitts Jr. of Houston,  Texas. She had five grandsons and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom were so very special to her. She was a special Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and friend to all that knew her. The family has a special place in our hearts for Sue Wallace, Baptist Memorial nurse and friend, and Dr. C. Dusty Anderton, who cared for her, for many years.

GWENDOLA MYERS

Gwendola Myers was born Feb. 28, 1913, in Colorado City,  Texas, to the late John and Blanche Franklin Lovelace. She went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 6, 2002, in San Angelo after a lengthy illness. She married Elmo Myers on Dec. 2, 1932, and this union brought forth three sons. Mr. Meyers preceded her in death on Dec. 2, 1972. She was employed by SAISD for over 22 years and was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Menard. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Chaplain Jim Benson officiating. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a son, Buster Myers. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Winston Lovelace and Virgil Hughlee Lovelace, and a sister, Francis Dreyer. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, W.E. “Bill” and Nell Myers of Odessa and William and Brenda Myers of San Angelo; nine grandchildren, Linda Holcomb, Cindy Ward, Terri Hoffman, Tina Kothman, Albert Myers, Matthew Myers, Lisa Schkade, Mark Myers and Michael Myers; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Other loving family and many friends also survive her.

HILDA FOREMAN

Hilda Foreman, 88, of Key Largo, Fla., died Friday, June 7, 2002, in Homestead, Fla. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Budewig and the Rev. Chester McCown officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Hilda was born Jan. 5, 1914, in Priddy,  Texas, to August F. and Louise Drueckhammer. Hilda was married to Ralph M. Foreman on Oct. 3, 1937, in Priddy,  Texas. Ralph died in 1982 and in 1986 Hilda moved to Florida to live with her daughter, Frances. She has been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1945. Survivors include her son, Charles Foreman of Arlington,  Texas; her daughter, Frances Miller of Key Largo, Fla.; one brother, Walter Drueckhammer of Rowena,  Texas; two sisters, Louise Adams of Midland,  Texas, and Leona Glasgow of Spruce Creek, Pa.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

COLEMAN — James Ernest Estes, 75, was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leffel and Ladona Estes born April 14, 1927, in Rockwood,  Texas. He passed away Thursday, June 6, 2002, at his residence in Coleman. Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in Walker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Estes officiating. Interment will follow in Rockwood Cemetery. James was a lifetime resident of Coleman and Coleman County. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He married Miss Betty Jean Slunder in Rockwood,  Texas, Oct. 29, 1953. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty Estes of Coleman; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Lloyd Cole of Bangs,  Texas, Sarah and Kevin Kelley of Early,  Texas, and Cindy and Earl  Johnson of Coleman; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy Estes of Coleman and Archie and Angel Estes of Bangs,  Texas; two sisters, Louise McClellan and Mrs. Betty Day, both of Coleman; one brother, Bruce Estes of Rockwood; 12 grandchildren, Christy and husband, Scott and children, Koral and Justus Collier of Little Rock, Ark., Wayne Robbins of Huntsville,  Texas, Jamie Cole of Bridgeport,  Texas, Angie Cole of Irving,  Texas, Michael Robbins, Tony Estes and Brianne Estes, all of Bangs,  Texas, Zachary  Johnson and Tyler Johnson, both of Coleman, Shannon and son, Phillip Ratto and  Taylor Ratto, all of Abilene,  Texas; beloved pet, Buttercup, and two great-grandsons, Spencer Collier and Zane Ratto. His two sisters, Geneva and LaDona Marie have preceded him in death.

HAROLD W. BOATRIGHT

Harold W. Boatright, 77, of San Angelo was called home to be with his Lord on June 5, 2002. He was born April 16, 1925, to Henry L. and Alta Boatright in San Angelo,  Texas. He married Helen Ruth Hill on March 31, 1946, in San Angelo. He served his country in the United States Navy and was stationed on board the USS Battleship Maryland for three years. Harold and Helen lived in Temple and Odessa where they had a refrigeration service for over 30 years. They moved back to San Angelo in 1989. Harold was a faithful member of Paul Ann Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors and had many hunting and fishing friends. He will be missed by them because he made each outing a memorable one. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ronald Boatright and sister-in-law, Erma Boatright. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Ruth of San Angelo; one sister, Ruby Hartman, and one sister-in-law, Mary Jo Thomas, both of San Angelo; two nieces; and four nephews. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 7, in the Miles Cemetery, with Jeff Lynn officiating. The family requests memorials to be made to the Paul Ann Baptist Church Building Fund, or a favorite charity
