Cruz U. Cortez, 46, of San Angelo,  Texas, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2002. He was born May 10, 1956, in Uvalde,  Texas. Survivors include his mother, Aurelia U. Ramos of San Angelo; daughters, Monica Cortez and Madison N. Cortez of San Angelo; a son, Cruz Cortez II of Ballinger; his brothers, Carlos U. Cortez of San Angelo, Paul U. Cortez of Grape Creek, Alfredo U. Cortez and David U. Cortez of San Angelo; and his sisters, Dolores Cortez of San Antonio, Marie Hernandez and Rebecca Garcia of San Angelo. He was preceded in death by his father, Pablo Cortez. Service was at 10 a.m. Friday, June 7, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel.

DENTON — Doris Bean Johnson, 73, of Denton passed away Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, in the Denton Regional Medical Center. She was born Feb. 20, 1929, in Corpus Christi to George James Bean and Vada Jenkins Bean. Doris graduated from San Angelo High School and attended Baylor University. She married John C.  Johnson Dec. 25, 1951, in San Angelo. She was a member of the Southmont Baptist Church. She was a member of the Current Century Dept. of the Ariel Club and the Wednesday Bridge Club. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors with Dr. Wayne Blankenship and the Rev. Billie Hanks Jr. officiating with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton. Doris is survived by her husband, John C.  Johnson of Denton; daughter, Ann and husband, Jim Srubek; sons, Clay  Johnson of Corrales, N.M., and Cliff  Johnson and wife, Pat, of Denton; sisters, Frances Baker of San Angelo and Louise Appel of Georgetown; brother, Joe Bean and wife, Marolyn, of Ozona; five grandchildren, Jillian Caldwell of Albuquerque, N.M., Audrey and husband, Chris Moralez, and Cole  Johnson and wife, all of Midland, and Matt and Jessie  Johnson of Albuquerque, N.M.; and one great-grandchild, Jasmine Caldwell of Albuquerque, N.M

MARY JO CASTON HARMON

ROBERT LEE — Mary Jo Harmon, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, went home to join the Lord on July 31, 2002. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Robert Lee Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Robert Lee Cemetery. Mary Jo was the oldest child of Joseph and Bessie Caston. She was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Miles,  Texas. She attended school in Artesia, N.M., at Wildcat in Coke County, and Robert Lee where she graduated at the age of 16. Mary Jo married J.D. Harmon on Feb. 14, 1942, in Ballinger,  Texas. While J.D. was overseas during World War II, Mary Jo worked at various jobs here in the states. She began working at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo and then went to work for Consolidated Aircraft in Fort Worth. After attending telegraph operator school, she went to work for Western Union and was assigned to duties in Denver,  Washington D.C., and Sacramento,  Calif. After the war, J.D. and Mary Jo made their home in Robert Lee. Their daughter, Mandy, was born on Feb. 20, 1955. Mary Jo was an active member and officer of the Robert Lee Garden Club and won many awards for her flower arrangements. The Garden Club also was active in many beautification projects around Robert Lee. Mary Jo’s artistic talents also included painting, which she enjoyed very much. Mary Jo taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and G.A.’s. She took an active role during Mandy’s school years as room mother and PTA officer. J.D. and Mary Jo worked together to build his land and water conservation business. When the business was incorporated, J.D. Harmon Inc. in 1973, Mary Jo served as vice president of the company. Mary Jo was preceded in death by brothers, Henry Caston and Carlton Caston. She is survived by her husband, J.D. Harmon of Robert Lee; her daughter, Mandy Box and husband, Frank Box; grandchildren, Damon Box, Erin Box and Brandon Box; brothers include, Clem Caston, Lowell Caston and J.C. Caston; and sisters, Betty Harp and Evelyn Copple. Mary Jo loved life and was a blessing to everyone who knew her.

FRANCIS A. WITKOWSKI
Francis A. Witkowski, 82, of San Angelo,  Texas, formerly of Binghamton, N.Y., passed away Sunday, July 28, 2002, in a local nursing home after a long illness. A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Holy Angels Church in San Angelo. A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, at Holy Angels Church in San Angelo with Father Charles Greenwell officiating. Francis (Uncle Frank) was born on April 20, 1920, in Binghamton, N.Y. He graduated from St. Stanislaus Kostka School and St. Patrick’s Academy. He was the son of the late Theodore and Hedwig (Krolak) Witkowski. Frank worked for the former Endicott  Johnson Shoe Corp. as a cost accountant for nearly 40 years. He also served in the United States Army for two years. After his retirement, he moved to Rantoul, Ill., and worked as a security guard for the Solo Cup Company and the Bell Helmet Company. During this time, the joy of his life was his loving great-niece, Michele, great-nephew, Joey, and a dog named Niki. In 1992, he moved to San Angelo,  Texas, to enjoy walking, playing lotto and to just enjoy another part of God’s beautiful country. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Surviving are a sister, Mary Anne Zapala and her husband, Bill, and a nephew, Joe Zapala and his wife, Donna Kay, all of San Angelo. Frank was preceded in death by a sister, Sister M. Marguerite Witkowski of the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, and a brother, Edward Witkowski. The family wishes to thank Dr. John Granaghan, the staff at the San Angelo Community Hospital and West  Texas Medical Assoc., and the loving care given to Frank by the staff at Park Plaza Nursing Home and Hospice of San Angelo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Holy Angels Church building fund.

KENNETH WAYNE TURNER

Kenneth Wayne Turner, 62, of San Angelo passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2002. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rod Skelton and the Rev. M.W. “Skip” Hill II officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Mr. Turner was born Jan. 15, 1940, in Abernathy,  Texas. He retired from civil service at Goodfellow Air Force Base. He served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964 and the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1987. He enjoyed chuck wagon cooking for rodeos and other activities and the cowboy lifestyle. Mr. Turner led Bible studies for the  Texas Tech Rodeo Team and other students. He is survived by his loving family, wife, Nedra Turner of San Angelo; daughter and son-in-law, Michele and James Melton of Burkburnett,  Texas; son and daughter-in-law, James Curtis and Brandi Turner of Kyle,  Texas; five grandchildren, Jessica Melton, Tristan Melton, Christopher McNeil, Trace Turner and Kira Turner; three sisters, Barbara Lamb of Tulia,  Texas, Linda Rapp of Lubbock,  Texas, and Frances Goolsby of Abernathy; and numerous other family members.

MARIE SATTERFIELD

Marie went home to be with the Lord Aug. 2, 2002. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Brother Daryl Williams officiating. Marie was born Lillian Marie Culp on Oct. 4, 1931, in Tarzen,  Texas, to parents Henry and Artie Culp. Marie married Willie “Bill” Satterfield in 1951. She was preceded in death by husband, Bill; son, Jackie Wayne; grandson, Bill; and special brother, Henry Culp. She is survived by sons, Bill Lewis Jr. of Collins, Miss., Charles Satterfield and Michael Satterfield and wife, Joni; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Roberts, all of San Angelo; brothers, Wayne Culp of Granberry, Elmer Culp of Midland and Wesley Hopper of San Angelo; and sisters, Glenda Petree, Mary Chandler and Debra McMillian of San Angelo. Also survived by grandchildren, Becky Reid and Teresa Lee of Mississippi, and Kristi and Kacey Westbrook, and Steven Ross Satterfield, all of San Angelo; and great-grandchildren, Brooke, Nicole, James, Tyler, Dalton, Brittany, Braden and Caleb. She leaves behind special friends, Marge Crutchfield of Mason and Noni Baze of San Angelo; and many, many other friends. Marie was a source of great strength and compassion for her family and friends and will forever be loved and remembered. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Calvert, Cecil Chandler, Michael Engram, Benny Wayne Jenkins, Wesley Hopper and Pete Perez. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of donor’s choice.

BARBARA DIANE PRINCE
ODESSA — Minister Barbara Diane Prince was born Feb. 20, 1952, to Mrs. Mabel Prince in Odessa, Ector County,  Texas. She was the seventh child of eight. Her early public schooling was done in Odessa where she also finished Ector High School. After graduation she attended Angelo State University in San Angelo,  Texas. There she obtained a bachelor’s of science degree in 1973. In 1976, she received a master’s degree in education and she pursued a law degree at  Texas Tech University. She was called into the ministry and became the associate pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in San Angelo,  Texas, for a number of years. Later, she moved to Fort Worth,  Texas, where she attended  Texas Christian University Theological Seminary and served as an associate minister of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. Minister Prince, a member of Alpha Kappa Sorority, was the recipient of many honors. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 29, at Walker’s Chapel Church of God in Christ, 525 S. Grandview Avenue, with the Rev. Chauncey Neely of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Fort Worth officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Survivors include one sister, Florie Nall Peterson of Odessa,  Texas; three brothers, Arthur Morris Prince, Elliott L. Prince and Michael Prince, all of Odessa; one daughter, Brandai Wills and husband, Ray Wills, of Newport News, Va.; one son, Derrick Prince of San Angelo,  Texas; her mother, Mrs. Bernice Deaver of Odessa,  Texas; her grandmother, Mrs. Paulethia Hunter of Odessa,  Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

John Nafus, 73, of San Angelo passed away Friday, July 26, 2002. military graveside service was at 2 p.m. Monday, July 29, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Mr. Nafus was born on July 5, 1929, in Luzerne, Pa., to the late Edward and Hazel Decker Nafus. He graduated from Luzerne High School and enlisted in the Air Force in 1948, serving 21 years and retiring as Master Sergeant. He worked 24 years for various telecommunications companies before retiring in 1992. He is survived by his wife, Anna Nafus of San Angelo; three daughters, Janie Henson and husband of Burleson, Charlyn Gloeckler and Anna Unger, both of San Angelo; grandchildren, Kellie Beard, Rick Henson, Randy Henson and wife, Salana, of Burleson, Troy Gloeckler, Shane Gloeckler and wife, Melissa, of Burleson, Tony Edmunds, and Tracy Unger and wife, Christine, of San Angelo; great-grandchildren, Ross Morris, Kandra and Kaela Edmunds, Tori and Tanner Unger, Trey and John Gloeckler, Bailey and Kenley Gloeckler and Rex Henson; two brothers, Dave Nafus of Wilkesbarre, Pa., and Howard Nafus of North Hampton, Pa.; and three sisters, Elizabeth Williams of Dallas, Pa., Jessie Kasarda of Luzerne, Pa., and Erma Traglia of Pittston, Pa. The family would like to extend a special thanks to VistaCare Family Hospice.

GRACE CLOUD DAVIS

EDEN — Grace Cloud Davis, 96 years old, left this earth on July 31, 2002. She leaves behind four children, Arthur Lee McGuffin Graham, Carl B. McGuffin, Onice J. McGuffin, Weldon G. McGuffin; a very special daughter-in-law, Marie McGuffin, who cared for her for the last 20 years; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Leanard Cloud and Annie Ellen Vines Cloud; and three children, Samuel J. McGuffin, Waldo C. McGuffin and Sonny McGuffin and her husband, Vernon Lawrence V. Davis. Grace lived off and on in Concho County most of her life and was well known throughout for her kindness in helping people in need and sitting with the ill. She also delivered many babies in her lifetime. Grace loved to crochet and always was crocheting bedspreads, tablecloths and placemats for her family and friends. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends and will be missed. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, in the Eden Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Kenneth Patrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Eden City Cemetery.

WENDELL COPE

Wendell Cope, 72, of San Angelo, loving husband, father and grandfather, honest and faithful friend, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 30, 2002. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, in the Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. A local resident for 45 years, Wendell worked for many years in construction and operated Cope Sand & Gravel. He was most content with life when working and helping his friends. He enjoyed “The Place” in Bronte, his family’s farm, most of all. He was a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force, serving in Korea. Survivors include his wife, Claudeen; children, Bill McClatchy, Bobbie McClatchy Mason and Linda Cope Davis; his sister, Peggy Stephenson; and six great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Randy Mason, Scott McClatchy, Claudia Mason, Derek Mason, SPC Michael Davis, Daniel Davis and Michelle McClatchy. Honorary pallbearer will be Tony Mason. Wendell, Daddy, Paw Paw, we love you and we’ll miss you.

Ruth Carter, 83, of San Angelo,  Texas, died at 7:26 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2002, at her residence. Ruth was born June 10, 1919, in San Saba,  Texas. She was married to Charles Carter on Aug. 14, 1937, in San Angelo,  Texas, and she was a member of Freedom Fellowship Church. Ruth was a very caring person who loved people and loved to have fun with friends and family. Everywhere the family lived, from coast to coast, she always made lasting friendships with the many people she met along the way. She was a very nurturing and loving mother and grandmother. Survivors include her husband, Charles Carter of San Angelo; one daughter, Barbara Kay Carter Burgan and husband, Sager Burgan, of Cedar Park,  Texas; two grandsons, Christopher M. Burgan of Cedar Park and Whitney I. Liggett of Fort Worth; granddaughter, Kimberly G. Lartigue of Cedar Park; two great-grandsons, Cyril L. Lartigue and Joseph M. Lartigue, both of Cedar Park,  Texas; a great-granddaughter, Rebecca Lee Liggett of Fort Worth; and one sister, Cleo Pauline Malone of El Paso,  Texas. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel with burial to be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio,  Texas, with Pastor Harold Watkins, pastor of Freedom Fellowship Church, officiating.

BOBBIE DEE MOORE

Bobbie Dee Moore, 78, of San Angelo passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, to be with her Lord and join her husband, D.C. Moore, who preceded her in death. Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church in San Angelo with the Rev. John Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Moore was born to Horace and Clarice Oliver on Sept. 5, 1924, in Ballinger. She graduated from high school in Van Horn and received her teaching degrees from Sul Ross State University where she began her teaching career at 18 years old. Bobbie Dee and D.C. Moore were married on April 8, 1944, and were life-long companions until his death in 1985. As an educator in Marfa, Valentine, Mertzon and San Angelo, Bobbie touched and positively influenced the lives of many students she taught during her 40-year career. She was considered by her students and colleagues as an “outstanding teacher.” Mrs. Moore demanded the best from and had high expectations for all her students. After retiring from the teaching profession in 1983, she devoted much of her time, energy and service to the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church. A mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Bobbie will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her. Her church and church friends were a source of strength and support and she was the same for them. She was truly “a lady” in every sense of the word. She is survived by her son, Terry Moore; her grandchildren, Bethany and Travis Moore; her sister, Terrelene Bridgford; sister-in-law, Yvonne Oliver; nieces and nephews, Judy Casley, Forrest Oliver, Clyde Oliver, Derek Bridgford and Dershie Kurtz. Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Horace Oliver Jr.; and her sister, LaMarylis Breeding. Flowers are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to her church, Sierra Vista United Methodist Church, would be greatly appreciated. “Life is a short journey here on earth. You completed your journey well. You are now at your final destination with your Lord and Savior. You will be missed but you will always be loved and fondly remembered by those of us who are still completing our journey.”

Billie Gene Malone, 73, of San Angelo,  Texas, died at 5:22 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at her residence. She was born Sept. 22, 1929, in San Angelo,  Texas, and was retired from GTE. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth H. Malone; one daughter, Stephani Foltz; one son, Kenneth Gene Malone, all of San Angelo; one sister, Margaret Cusenbary of San Antonio; three grandchildren, Erica Gollihugh of Lubbock, K.D. Foltz and Bobby Foltz, both of San Angelo. Graveside funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Buddy Trull officiating.

Agra Doris Ledbetter, 83, of Eldorado passed away Sept. 30, 2002, at her residence. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Pastor Andy Anderson of the First Baptist Church of Eldorado officiating. Agra was born Aug. 2, 1919, in Cuthbert,  Texas, to Jesse Allen and Gertrude Cornett. Agra was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her sweet and generous spirit was personified daily through her support and caring for family and friends. All of her grandchildren will cherish the memories of their red haired “MeMe” and “Grannie Red”. Her great-grandson will always remember his “little MeMur”. Heaven is blessed with a very special angel. She was preceded in death by husband of 64 years, Claude Ledbetter; and five brothers, Jack, Bill, Barney, Al, and Nolan Cornett. Survivors include two daughters, Claudette Hartgraves and husband, Morris, of Weatherford, Allene Halbert and husband, Dan, of Eldorado; dear friend, Nancy Doyle, fondly referred to as “daughter #3; three brothers, A.B. Cornett and Virginia of Brownfield, Paul Cornett and wife, Barbara, of Ballinger, Wayne Cornett and wife, Bea, of Midland; one sister, Sylvia Pruitt of Lamesa; five granddaughters, Joni Latimer and husband, Joe, of Houston, Alyssa Halbert and Jessica Halbert, both of New Braunfels, Lycynda Halbert and Charissa Sheppard, both of San Angelo; one grandson, Morri Hartgraves and wife, Letitia, of Weatherford; one great-grandson, Skyler Sheppard of San Angelo; one special niece, Linda Cox and husband, Wes, of Lubbock; special numerous nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law. The family would like to give special thanks to Nurses Unlimited, VistaCare Hospice of San Angelo and heartfelt thanks also goes out to her daily loving caretakers; Sandra, Sally, Elaina, Rosa and Louise.

KILGORE — Graveside service for Virginia Raiborn, 97, of Kilgore will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo,  Texas, with the Rev. Clarence Kelly officiating. Mrs. Raiborn died Oct. 5, 2002, in Kilgore. Mrs. Raiborn was born Jan. 31, 1905, to Will and Mary Agnes Anderson in Lubbock,  Texas. She moved to San Angelo in 1918 and lived on her parent’s ranch located in the Twin Mountains. In 1925, she married Frank Raiborn in San Angelo. Mrs. Raiborn lived in Fairfield, Ill., Joinerville,  Texas, and then moved to Kilgore. She was a member of the Forrest Home Baptist Church in Kilgore. Mrs. Raiborn was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Raiborn in 1979; and her grandson, Steve Duncan in 1999. Mrs. Raiborn is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Eloise and Herman Duncan of Kilgore, Elaine and Bill Hamon of Tyler,  Texas, Joan and Charlie Cation of Eddy,  Texas, and Jan and Butch Honeycutt of Mexia,  Texas; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Greater Hospice of East  Texas, 814 Gilmer Road, Suite 1, Longview, TX, 75604.
