Umphres
Charles “Chilly” Umphres, 83, of Tuleta died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in Beeville.
The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Galloway & Sons chapel, with the Rev. Mac Robinson officiating.
Burial followed in the Three Rivers Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gene DeLong, N.S. McNeill. L.M. Perkins, Marshall Stautzenberger, Jim Hiler and Carroll Blaschke. Honorary pallbearers were Neil and Clay Blaschke.
Mr. Umphres was born May 29, 1917, in Oakville to Laura (Edwards) and Jesse LeRoy Umphres. He married Jack Dortch on Feb. 11, 1942, in San Antonio. He was retired from the Corpus Christi Army Depot and was a member of First Baptist Church in Beeville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Dewey Umphres; and four sisters, Maude Harris, Lucy Speer, Ada Shelton and Jimmy Tyre.
Survivors include his wife, Jack D. Umphres of Tuleta; several nieces and nephews, including Vicki Blaschke of Austin and De Ann DeLong of George West.
Memorial donations may be made to the South  Texas Children’s Home, the Pettus-Tuleta Volunteer Fire Department and First Baptist Church organizations.

Hernandez
Ascencion P. Hernandez, 54, died at 7 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at his home in Berclair.
Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Treviño Funeral Home chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.
Burial will follow in the Berclair Cemetery.
Mr. Hernandez was born Dec. 31, 1946, in Berclair to Encarnacion and Concepcion (Perez) Hernandez. He was a farm and ranch worker and was a member of the Catholic church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lopez
Funeral services are pending at Galloway & Sons Funeral Directors for Christian Aldrick Lopez, infant son of Mardi Annie (Hinojosa) and Chad Aldrick Lopez.
Christian was born on Oct. 9, 2000, in Hawaii, and died that same day.

Pennington
Mathis Dee Pennington, 68, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, in Georgetown.
A graveside service and burial were held at 2 p.m. Friday in Glenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Higdon officiating.
Mr. Pennington was born here on Aug. 4, 1932.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alva William “Jack” Pennington; his mother, Roberta Parolee Brown Pennington Gardner; and stepfather, Don Gardner.
Survivors include a sister, Rhoda Dunn of Beeville; three cousins, Doris Herrmann of Beeville, Ann Bashaw of Bay City and Nan Wood of Temple; two nieces; and two nephews.

Blankenship
Services for Ella Leona Blankenship, 78, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in George West, with the Rev. Bruce Irving officiating.
Burial followed in Glenwood Cemetery here. Pallbearers were Larry Dement, Mario Canales, Paul Pickens, George Gillett, John Light and Jim Bassett.
Mrs. Blankenship died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, in Cleburne. She was born Sept. 26, 1922, in DeWitt County to Mike D. and Amanda (Parker) Light. She married Milton Blankenship here on Jan. 1, 1941.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of George West and the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen (Mrs. Wes) Nelson of Cleburne; a son, James M. Blankenship of George West; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mozelle Dunn of George West and Ruth Blankenship of McKinney.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Carolyn Blankenship, in 1946; and three brothers, R.B., John and Mike Light.
Arrangements were under the direction of Cleburne Funeral Home in Cleburne.

Havelka
Jerry E. Havelka, 76, of San Marcos died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, in Austin.
A rosary was scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Galloway & Sons chapel in Three Rivers. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Peter Gajda officiating.
Burial will follow in the Three Rivers Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ty Havelka, James and Jordan Liska, Chip Martin, Chuck Boester and Dennis Strmiska.
Mr. Havelka was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Jarrell to Matilda (Kobza) and George E. Havelka. He married Alice Liska on Jan. 10, 1949, in Three Rivers. He had been employed as a meters superintendent with Central Power & Light Co.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Havelka of San Marcos; four children, Thomas Havelka of McAllen, Mary Martin of St. Louis, Mo., Carol Havelka of San Marcos and Sharon Boester of Kenedy; five grandchildren, Ty Havelka of Aransas Pass, Renee and De Ann Whitson of St. Louis, Mo., Roxanne Havelka of San Marcos and Marie Havelka of McAllen; three sisters, Henrietta Sibley of Harlingen, Georgia Strmiska of Kenedy and Sylvia Bluhm of Victoria; and one brother, Daniel E. Havelka of Granbury.

Hopson
William Paul Hopson, 81, of San Marcos died there on Thursday evening, Nov. 30, 2000. He was the father of Paula Duffy of Beeville. Mr. Hopson was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Mound.
He was a graduate of Southwest  Texas State Teachers College and had been a teacher there before his retirement. He also was retired from Butler Manufacturing. He served with the Fifth Army under Gen. Mark Clark during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter and a great-granddaughter.
Survivors include two daughters, Paula Hopson Duffy of Beeville and Peggy H. Summers of San Marcos; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters; and eight brothers.
Funeral services are pending at Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos.

Kimbrough
Lois Virginia Kimbrough, 78, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in Wimberley. She was the mother of former Bee County Judge Jay Kimbrough.
She was born Aug. 6, 1922, in Trinity. Mrs. Kimbrough was a member of numerous historical societies.
The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Huntsville Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Carrol Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Darby-Holhausen Cemetery in Polk County. Pallbearers were Jay and Brian Kimbrough, Eddie Hutchison, Anthony and Tony Nolan, John Cashion, Dr. T.C. Cole Jr. and Jim West.
Survivors include a daughter, Marian Nolan and husband Anthony of Paris; a son, Jay Kimbrough and wife Ann of San Marcos; five grandchildren, Melissa Kimbrough Hutchison of Huntsville, Brian Kimbrough, Tony Nolan III of Austin, Anne Nolan of Round Rock and Leslie Nolan Cashion of The Colony; and two great-grandchildren, John and Jan Cashion of The Colony.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Huntsville building fund.
Arrangements were under the direction of Huntsville Funeral Home.

Archer
John LaFayette Archer, 58, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lenna Belle and Fred Bertram Archer.
Survivors include a brother, Fred B. Archer and wife Anita; two sisters, Nona Erion and husband Ralph and Jesse Rude and husband Donald; nine nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.
A chapel service was held Monday, followed by graveside rites in the Mineral Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home in Universal City.

Carabajal
Emma Flores Carabajal, 50, of Beeville died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001. She was born Dec. 8, 1950, in George West to Ignacio Sr. and Consuelo (Villarreal) Flores. She was employed as a maintenance worker with Nueces County and May Fabricating Co. She was a member of the Catholic church.
Survivors include her husband, Johnny Carabajal Sr. of Beeville; a daughter, Melissa Carabajal of Albuquerque, N.M.; four sons, Johnny Carabajal and wife Lee Ann, Mark Carabajal and wife Ramona, Randy Carabajal and wife Monica and Brian John Carabajal, all of Beeville; her father, Ignacio Flores Sr. of Skidmore; a sister, Rafaela Lara of Beeville; two brothers, Juan Flores of Houston and Ignacio Flores Jr. of Mathis; and five grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited at 7:30 tonight (Wednesday) at the Treviño Funeral Home chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, with Father Thomas Donovan officiating.
Burial will follow in Beeville Memorial Park.

Gonzales
Elena Moreno Gonzales, 83, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001. She was born Aug. 18, 1917, in Pettus to Jesus and Maria (Perales) Moreno. She was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic church. Her husband, Manuel Gonzales Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include six daughters, Margarita Garcia of Beeville, Maria Christina Reese Hudgins of  Oklahoma City, Okla., Maria Patricia Almaguer and husband Johnny and Delia Gonzales, all of Abilene, Maria Isabel Floyd and husband Stephen of Savannah, Ga., and Martina Gonzales of Willow Spring, N.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Manuel Jr. and Olivia Gonzales of Abilene, Santos and Dora Gonzales of Houston and Mauro and Erlinda Gonzales of Hawley; four sisters, Martha Guerra, Elojia Vasquez and Elvira Sellman, all of San Antonio, and Minnie Rosales of California; 39 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Treviño Funeral Home chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 o’clock this morning (Wednesday) at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, with Father Richard Gonzales officiating.
Burial followed in the Pettus Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ramon Saucedo, Gus Flores, David Reese, Santos Gonzales Jr., Danny Martinez and Matias Garcia.
