Thurmond
Betty Jean Steele Thurmond, 81, of Refugio died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003.
Visitation was to be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home chapel in Beeville. Funeral services will take place today (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Refugio, with the Revs. Lance Freeman and David Parks officiating. Special music included “The Old Rugged Cross” and “He Walks With Me.”
Burial will follow in Beeville Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Anthony Armont, Brian Thurmond, Eleanor Rivera, James Armont, Dolores Thurmond and John Gregorczyk. Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews and nieces.
Mrs. Thurmond was born on Oct. 30, 1921, in  Oklahoma City, Okla., to John G. and Rena (Willet) Steele. She married James Haskins Thurmond on Jan. 5, 1944, in Beeville. She was retired from her job as the assistant manager of the Dairy Queen in Refugio. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Refugio.
Mrs. Thurmond was an active member of the support group at Refugio Manor, block leader for the American Heart Association, telephone operator for Bell Telephone and owner of Refugio Cleaners.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in March 1998; her parents; a brother, Jimmy Steele; and three children, Mary Ann, Ellen Roseann and Lawrence Louis.
Mrs. Thurmond is survived by her daughter, Dolores Jean Armont and husband Eddie of Aransas Pass; a son, James Howard Thurmond and wife Nancy of Missouri City; five grandchildren, Anthony Armont and wife Darby of Austin, Brian Thurmond of Hillsboro, Eleanor Rivera and husband Rene of Houston, James Armont and wife Rachel of Aransas Pass and Dolores Thurmond of Stafford; four great-grandchildren, David, Michael, Jack and Marissa; four sisters, Mildred Toness of San Antonio, Barbara Roberts and husband Johnny of Woodsboro, Doris Ann Byrd and husband Ray of Rowlett and Jane Reddell and husband Bob of Sinton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Henkhaus
Lura Catherine Henkhaus, 80, died Sunday, Jan 26, 2003, in Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville following a long illness.
She was born in Jourdanton and had resided in Sinton for the past 55 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Henkhaus was a former Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader.
Survivors include her son, John E. Henkhaus Jr. of Beeville; a daughter, Lilly Wilkinson of Sinton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the First Baptist Church in Sinton with the Rev. Ed Brennan officiating. Interment followed in the Sinton Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled through Ritchea-Gonzales Funeral Home, Inc.

Mayne
Thelma Gladys Mayne, 87, of Kingsland, formerly of Beeville, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Highland Lakes Church of Christ in Kingsland, with the Rev. Joe Winnet officiating. Burial will follow in the Smithwick Cemetery in Smithwick.
Pallbearers will be Shelton Kennedy, Mike Johnson, Calvin Lewis, Gene Lewis, Clyde Lyda and Keith Webb.
Mrs. Mayne was born in Smithwick on Sept. 21, 1915, to Allen and Maebelle (Schaffer) Hall. She was a homemaker and a bookkeeper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Charles Mayne, and a son, Dr. William Allen Mayne.
Survivors include her son, Charlie Mayne and wife Florence of Austin; two grandchildren, Ashley Mayne of New York and Ben Mayne of Austin; and many other relatives and close friends.
Arrangements were handled through Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Marble Falls.

Ramirez
Sydney Ramirez, infant daughter of Steven and Sherry Ann (Muñoz) Ramirez, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville.
Graveside services were held Monday at 3 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Skidmore, with Father Patrick Donohoe officiating.
Survivors include her parents, Steven and Sherry Ramirez of Mathis; her maternal grandparents, Epifanio and Josefa Muñoz of Tynan; and her paternal grandmother, Esperanza Ramirez of Robstown.

Hope
Allison Nichole Hope, infant daughter of William and Rebecca Hope of Corpus Christi, died Monday, April 7, 2003.
She is survived by her parents; her maternal grandparents, Forrest and Sondra Voelkel; her paternal grandmother, Rose Lee Hope; and a sister, Amanda Hope, all of Corpus Christi; uncles, Jim (Hoang) Voelkel of Kansas City, Mo., Richard Voelkel of Corpus Christi and Kenneth (Shelli) Hope of Austin; aunts, Jodie (Glenn) Heimbigner and Irene (Russell) Williams of San Marcos; numerous nieces and nephews; great-uncles, aunts and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Glenn L. Hope.
Visitation was held Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Seaside Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. A second visitation was held Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the same location, with a memorial service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Melissa Nelson officiating. Interment followed at Seaside Memorial Park.

Smith
Aleene B. Smith, 65, of Mineral died Tuesday, April 8, 2003.
She was born in Beeville on April 23, 1937, to Bill and Bonnie (Phoenix) Bast. She married Z.V. “Zeb” Smith in June 1958 in Victoria. She was a retired schoolteacher and a member of Mineral Baptist Church. She taught school for more than 38 years, beginning her career in Beeville in 1959. She taught here for eight years, and taught high school history in Guam for six years. She taught special education in Pettus until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Bast.
Survivors include her husband, Z.V. “Zeb” Smith of Mineral; a son, Van (Sandra) Smith of Victoria; two grandchildren, Trevor and Monica Smith; and a sister, Hazel (Dennis) McGee of Mineral.
Funeral services will be held today (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at Mineral Baptist Church with the Rev. Homer Hanna Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Mineral Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mineral Cemetery Association.

Arguijo
Jose Alamar Arguijo 65, died April 3, 2003. He was born on Sept.1, 1939 in Beeville to the late Santiago Arguijo and Otilia Figueroa. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sulema Arguijo.
Jose was owner of Las Flores Dance Hall in Beeville and served with the United States Navy.
He is survived by his former wife, Carrie L. Salinas of Pettus; one son, Joe (Linda) Arguijo Jr. of Houston; two brothers, Ali and Arturo Arguijo both of Beeville; daughter-in-law, Alicia Arguijo of Houston; three grandchildren, Joe Arguijo III, Clarissa and Robert Arguijo and one great-grandchild, Valerie Marie Arguijo.
Rosary was held on Sunday, April 6, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Resurrection was held on Monday, April 7, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. Burial followed at Beeville Memorial Park with full military honors .

Brundrett
Hazel Genevieve (Parker) Brundrett, 88, of Skidmore died Monday, April 7, 2003, after a long illness.
Mrs. Brundrett was born on April 7, 1915, in Beeville to Teresa (Weir) and William (Willis Dee) Parker. She was a 1933 graduate of St. Joseph High School and married Robert Alton Brundrett on June 12, 1934, in Beeville. She lived all her life in Bee County and was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Mrs. Brundrett was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Alton Brundrett Jr., in 1937, and by her husband of 60 years, Alton Brundrett, in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Donald Brundrett and wife Becky of Apollo Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Sharon Fleming of Dripping Springs and GenAnn Keller and husband Michael of Sedalia,  Colo.; a former daughter-in-law, Patricia Wolfe Brundrett of Dallas; eight grandchildren, Kathleen Brundrett Blue, Robert Brundrett, Kenneth Brundrett, Laura Brundrett Chappell, Jeffrey Fleming, Rachel Fleming Hensch, Sarah Keller and Andrew Keller; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph’s, with Father Patrick Donohoe officiating. Grandchildren and relatives will serve as pallbearers and burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Cherry
William Cherry, 86, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, in Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville.
Visitation was held Monday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery. Funeral service followed at 11 a.m. at the graveside, with the Rev. Wes Barnett officiating.
Honorary pallbearers were his grandsons.
Mr. Cherry was born on Nov. 20, 1916, in Trinity County to Revis and Viola (Parker) Cherry. He married Murline Cole in Groveton on March 17, 1943. He resided in Pettus and was a retired oilfield worker. He was a member of the Baptist church. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Tommy, Floyd and Jerry Cherry.
Survivors include his wife, Murline Cherry of Pettus; three daughters, Lois  Johnson and husband Wayne of Bridge City, Rebecca Denning and husband Eddie and Ola Greene, all of Pettus; a son, Dell Cherry and wife Jenise of Beeville; a sister, Katy Pearl Craven of Spring; eight grandchildren, Jeff Johnson, Kip McJunkins, Paula Knight, Patti McJunkins, Ray McJunkins, Adam Axford, Christi Cherry and Colton Cherry; and seven great-grandchildren, Joshua Johnson, Bobbi, Kyle and Lauren McJunkins and Brice Jr., Caleb and Ashton Knight.

Dollase
Sue Reid Nosal Dollase of Glenwood Springs,  Colo., formerly of Pettus, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003.
She was born Sept. 6, 1906, in Charleston, Mo., to Frank and Anna Mary Nosal. She married Arnold C. Dollase on June 20, 1936, in Mitchell, S.D. He preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 1984.
Mrs. Dollase taught school for 51 years in the Beeville and Pawnee Independent School Districts and in Missouri. She and her husband were members of Faith Lutheran Church here.
She is survived by three sons, Edward A. Dollase and wife Vera of St. Louis, Mo., Arnold E. Dollase of Glenwood Springs,  Colo., David A. Dollase and wife Cheryl of Beeville; three grandchildren, Mark A. Dollase of Indianapolis, Ind., Tina M. Dollase of Brighton,  Colo., and David J. Dollase and wife Christine of Beeville; two great-grandchildren, Cade and Reid Dollase of Beeville; and a niece, Mary Ann Hadley of Houston.
Interment will be in the Kenedy Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to South  Texas Children’s Home or Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo.

Fassold
Amelina “Minnie” Baltazar Fassol, 74, died April 3, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her parents Tomas Baltazar Sr. and Domitila Contreras; one brother Raymond Baltazar and her husband, Roy A. Fassold. Amelina enjoyed spending quality time with her family.
She is survived by her brothers, Tomas (Teresa) Baltazar Jr. of Riverside, Ca., Bobby (Maria Luisa) Baltazar and Jimmy Baltazar, both of Beeville, Tx.; two sisters, Josie Baltazar Soliz of Monrovia, Ca. and Dorothy Baltazar Flax of Houston, Tx.; and several nieces and nephews and great-nephews and nieces.
Rosary was conducted on Monday, April 7, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Resurrection was held on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Balaswamy Pasala officiating. Burial followed at the Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Tomas Baltazar Jr., Jimmy Baltazar, Ruben Baltazar, Conrad Contreras, Manuel Soliz, Tomas Montalvo and Robert Soliz.
