Laurel
Pauline G. Laurel, 93, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, in San Antonio.
Mrs. Laurel was born on June 30, 1909, in Zapata to Pedro and Cirinia Garcia. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor Laurel Sr.; three babies; two sisters, Maria and Ester; two brothers, Tomas and Conrado; a son, Victor Laurel Jr.; and a grandson, Donald Laurel.
Survivors include two sisters, Eufemia Gonzales and Ramona Martinez; one daughter, Christine (Reynaldo) Carabajal of San Antonio; a daughter-in-law, Alice Laurel of Alvin; eight grandchildren, Ronald, Velma, Alamar, Liz, Laurel, Charles, Leonard and David; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter, Zoe; and countless nieces, nephews and friends. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
A viewing will be held at Delgado Funeral Home in San Antonio (319 W. Mitchell, off Probandt and I-10 East) on Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. There will be a graveside service in Corpus Christi officiated by Eleazar Guerrero on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park (2731 Comanche, off Port Avenue).

Medina
Baldemar Medina, 68, died Sunday, April 6, 2003. Baldemar was preceded in death by his parents, Delfino Medina Sr. and Petra Gomez and his sister, Amelia Garcia.
Baldemar was employed with Zimmer’s Floral & Nursery for 27 years and also worked for Schulz & Wroten Pharmacy. He enjoyed spending quality time with his wife, children and his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.
Baldemar and his wife of 37 years enjoyed dancing and having breakfast with each other.
He is survived by his wife, Margarita Medina of Beeville; one son, Randy (June) Medina; four daughters, Mary (Roy) Casarez of Beeville; Janie Medina and Helen Aguilar, both of Houston; Carrie Felmley of San Antonio; three brothers, Juan Medina of California; Delfino Medina Jr. of Beeville and Cornelio Medina of Houston; three sisters, Ramona Lara of Beeville, Estella Martinez and Jesusa Perez, both of California; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Rosary was held on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Resurrection was held on Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Rev. Richard Gonzales officiating. Burial followed at the Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Gilbert Lara, Frank Rivera, Carlos Gonzales, Juan Gaona, Richard Guajardo and Cornelio Medina.

Polk
Lillie M. Polk, 88, died April 1, 2003 at the age of 88. Lillie was born in Cuero, Tx. on September 11, 1914 to the late Jeff Lewis and Fannie Davis.
She was preceded in death by her brother, James Lewis and her sister, Bertha Parker.
Lillie was a middle school teacher and enjoyed teaching her students.
She is survived by two sons, Anderson G. (Rose) Polk of Marietta, Ga. and Franklin D. (Betty) Polk of Hollysprings, N.C.; three grandchildren, Leslie Polk, Franklin Keith Polk and Collin Anderson Polk.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2003 from 1:00 p.m. till 2:00 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home Chapel with Graveside Services to be held at 2:30 p.m. at St. Rose Cemetery with Rev. Norris D.  Jackson officiating.

Rabe
Harry Henry Rabe, 97, a former resident of Bee County, died April 1, 2003, at the home of his family in LaFeria.
He was born to Herman Ernest and Bertha (Schulenburg) Rabe on Sept. 13, 1905, at Berclair in Goliad County. He was baptized in the Lutheran church. When he was a small child, the family moved to Bee County, where he was educated in the Colony School.
In the mid-1920s, Mr. Rabe moved to the Rio Grande Valley to assist his brother, Walter, in the produce and farming business they established near La Blanca, in Hidalgo County. In 1949, he purchased a farm near Natalia in Medina County, where he made his home until he retired in 1981.
At that community he was instrumental in securing a charter for the Boy Scouts of America, and served as Explorer Scout leader for many years. In 1985, on his 80th birthday, the town of Natalia celebrated “Harry Rabe Day.”
After leaving Natalia, he lived in the Fredericksburg area for several years. In 1999, he moved to LaFeria, in Cameron County, to be near his brother, Walter, and other family members.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his father in 1963 and his stepmother, Dora Pahmiyer Rabe, in 1981. Also preceding him in death were his older brothers, Walter of LaFeria in 2000 and Herbert of Normanna in 1998; four sisters, Linda, Esther, Margaret and Olga Rabe, who all died prior to World War I; and five other sisters, Nora and Alma Rabe, Leona Jones, Hilda Bremer and Pollie Mae Hill; three nephews, William Clayton “Bill” Rabe of LaBlanca, Marvin B. Rabe of Tuleta and Hubert T. Rabe of Comfort.
Survivors include his brother, Carl Ellis Rabe of San Antonio; a sister, Clara Blinks of Azle; numerous nieces and nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; a cousin, Sister Elizabeth Riebschlaiger; two sisters-in-law, Effie Shows Rabe of LaFeria and Sally Rabe of San Antonio; and a wide circle of friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home in Hondo, with his nephew, the Rev. Jerry  Johnson of LaFeria, officiating. Interment followed in the Oakwood Section of the Hondo Cemetery. Nephews and great-nephews served as pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to Sandi Jo Funk Hospice, in care of Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen; the Boy Scouts of America; or to Cal Farley’s Boys’ Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, TX.
Arrangements were handled through Guinn-Horger Funeral Home, Hondo.

Rylant
Donald Rylant Sr., 71, of Calallen died Thursday, April 3, 2003, in his home, after a long illness.
He was born on Feb. 22, 1932, in Port Lavaca to William Herschel and Beatrice (Roan) Rylant. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Rylant was retired from Central Power and Light and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Jo Lively.
Survivors include his wife, Judith Rylant of Calallen; two sons, Donald (Donna) Rylant Jr. of LaVernia and Wesley G. Hart of Houston; four daughters, Kathy (Robert) Rios of Calallen, Rose Rylant Fojtik of Skidmore, Melissa Hart Seaton of Angleton and DeAn K. Rylant of Calallen; two sisters, Louise Disbro of Premont and Marjorie Petrus of Skidmore; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Margie Shelburne of Taft; and many friends.
Visitation was held from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in Sawyer-George Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the same location. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Skidmore.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Spohn Hospice.
Arrangements were handled through Sawyer-George Funeral Home, Corpus Christi.

Cates
Jerome (Jack) Curtis Cates, 91, former vice president of fiscal affairs and interim president of Southwest  Texas State University, died Saturday, March 29, 2003.
Mr. Cates lived in Beeville for 15 years, serving as a teacher, high school principal and superintendent of the Beeville public schools. He was also the president of the Chamber of Commerce during his tenure here.
He was born on Aug. 15, 1911, in Menard, the son of William Leiston and Willie Floy Cates. He graduated from Robstown High School in 1930 and studied business administration at  Texas College of Arts and Industries in Kingsville. He received his bachelor of arts degree with honors before later earning his MBA at the University of  Texas in Austin.
In 1932, Mr. Cates married Lucile Wyn. The couple had two children, Jerome Curtis Cates Jr. and Kay Carolyn. Mrs. Cates preceded her husband in death in 1978.
He left Beeville in 1950 and moved to San Marcos to become business administrator and associate professor, and later, professor of business administration and chief fiscal officer at SWTSU. Having served the university for 25 years, Mr. Cates retired in 1975 after serving as senior vice president of fiscal affairs and interim president.
In 1981, he married Mildred Mitchell.
She survives him, as do his children, Jerome Curtis Cates Jr. and wife Kathleen, and Kay Carolyn Hudson and husband Weldon; five grandchildren, Rita Cates Bogle, Jerome “Jerry” Cates III, Kelly Cates, David Hudson and Leslie Hudson Henderson; nine great-grandchildren; and his stepchildren, Lee and Judy Mitchell and Teri Moore, and their five children.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Pennington Memorial Chapel in San Marcos.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 472, San Marcos, TX 78667, and Hope Hospice of New Braunfels, 611 N. Walnut Ave., New Braunfels, TX 78130.
Arrangements were handled through Pennington Funeral Home, San Marcos.

Fleming
Robert Fleming, 61, of Dripping Springs died Sunday, March 30, 2003, of cancer.
He was born on Oct. 27, 1941, in Redwood to Malcolm and Lucile (Atkins) Fleming.
Mr. Fleming graduated in 1964 from Southwest  Texas State University with a degree in art and worked for more than 20 years as a commercial artist and art director in Houston before moving to Austin.
In 1990, he joined  Texas Parks and Wildlife as a staff illustrator and was a fine art manager in the graphics department. He produced art for the rainbow trout stamp and the white-winged dove stamp. He also designed the first  Texas Conservation license plates featuring the horned lizard and the bluebonnet. Mr. Fleming was also a part of the  Texas Land Steward Award ceremony. He created a prismacolor landscape portrait for the recipient of that award that was presented by the governor.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucile Fleming, who died in August 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Teresa Brundrett of Beeville, whom he married in 1967; his father, Malcolm Fleming of San Marcos; a son, Jeffrey Fleming and wife Jody of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Rachel Fleming Hensch and husband Cory of Skidmore; a grandson, Alton Hensch of Skidmore; four brothers, Mike Fleming and wife Martha, David Fleming and wife Gail, Daryl Fleming and wife Pat, all of San Marcos, and Greg Fleming and wife Jan of Houston; and three sisters, Frances Burnet and husband Walter of Wimberley and Maxine Cassidy and husband Bill and Louann Fleming, all of San Marcos.
Memorial services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in San Marcos.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 1101-D, Thorpe Lane, Suite #425, San Marcos, TX 78666-7138.
Arrangements were handled through Pennington Funeral Home, San Marcos.

Longoria
Sara Hinojosa Longoria, 99, died Monday, March 31, 2003.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 2 to 9 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home chapel. Rosary will be recited this evening at 7 o’clock at the same location. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Father Balaswamy Pasala officiating. Burial will follow in the San Pedro Cemetery in Clareville.
Pallbearers will be Jesse, Jimmy, Joe, Jacob and Jerry Garcia and Steban Longoria.
Mrs. Longoria was born on Dec. 17, 1903, in Lagarto to Celso and Andrea (Martinez) Hinojosa. She married Julian Longoria on Dec. 24, 1927, in Beeville. She was a homemaker and a member of St. James. She enjoyed gardening and reading.
Survivors include two daughters, Sara Ochoa and Amelia Garcia and husband Jesse, all of Beeville; a son, Julian Longoria and wife Dalia of Pasadena; a brother, Celso Hinojosa of Corpus Christi; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Martinez
Lupita Martinez, 58, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville.
Visitation was held Tuesday from 1 to 9 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home. A prayer service was held that evening at 7 o’clock at the same location. A second visitation will take place today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Monte Del Olivar Christian Church. Funeral services will follow at 3 o’clock at that location. Burial will follow in Beeville Memorial Park.
Ms. Martinez was born on Dec. 8, 1944, in Beeville, to Federico and Aurora (Garcia) Martinez. She resided in Beeville and was a certified nurse aide with Exclusive Nursing. She was a Pentecostal.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Federico Martinez Jr. and Raul Martinez, and a sister, Maria Martinez Rodriguez.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda Cantu and husband Marty; a sister, Consuelo Zuniga and husband Domingo; two brothers, Jose Martinez and wife Irene and Felipe Martinez; and two grandchildren, Joshua and Bianca Cantu, all of Beeville; and several nieces and nephews.
