Tiews
David S. Tiews, 66, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born on Feb. 19, 1937, in Boston, Mass., to Henry C. and Dorothy (Stoddard) Tiews. He was retired from the New York State Department of Corrections and resided in Wellsburg, N.Y. He was self-employed as a handyman in the Elmira area. He was a member of FOE #941, Elmira, N.Y.
Visitation will be held Thursday at Walter J. Kent Funeral Home in Elmira, N.Y. Funeral services will take place at the same location Friday at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
Survivors include his fiancee and best friend of 30 years, Marilyn Woodard; stepchildren Kathy (Dave) Jaynes of Big Flats, N.Y., and Michael Woodard of Elmira, N.Y.; his children, Jennifer Buiniskis of Lockwood, N.Y., and Joseph Morey of Rochester, N.Y.; a brother, Peter S. Tiews of Rochester, N.H.; a sister, H. Cynthia Kirby of Beeville; four grandsons; two granddaughters; and three nieces.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements were handled through Walter J. Kent Funeral Home in Elmira, N.Y.

Weaver
Winnie Lazerne Weaver, 76, died at her home in Gatesville on Oct. 24, 2003, after a short bout with lymphoma.
She was born in Beeville to Sam Daniel and Jewell Mae Malone Weaver on April 21, 1927. She graduated from A.C.  Jones High School in 1945. During her high school days, she worked at the Rialto Theater selling tickets. After graduation she worked for several years as a telephone operator, later transferring to Austin. After a few short years, she attended college in Michigan and California and became a nurse. Her nursing career spanned 38 years at Glendale Adventist Hospital. She had recently attended her high school class reunion.
Survivors include her sister, Nell Yates of Gatesville, and a brother, Danny Weaver of Corpus Christi.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

LONGORIA
Juan Longoria, 86, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004.
Visitation was held Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home. Rosary was recited that evening at 7 o’clock at the same location. Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church, with Father Balaswamy Pasala officiating. Burial was to follow in Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Oscar Carrillo, Frank, Ernesto and Richard Longoria, Joe Salinas and Harry Robert Kroen. Honorary pallbearers were the staff at Hillside Nursing Home.
Mr. Longoria was born in Choate on April 9, 1917, to Clemente and Celestina (Villegas) Longoria. He married Sofia Carrillo on Jan. 10, 1951, in Beeville. He resided here and was a retired truck driver, after 45 years of employment with Dresser Magcobar Industries. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sofia C. Longoria; a daughter, Dora Ortiz and husband Victor, all of Beeville; two grandsons, Bryan K. Loya of Sinton and Brandon Loya of Beeville; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Brandon Jr., Cotton and Quest Loya, all of Beeville, and Bryan Alexander Loya of Sinton; and a brother, Emilio Longoria and wife Virginia of Tuleta.

Southwell
Samuel Beall Southwell of Houston died March 22, 2004, at the age of 82. He was born on Jan. 15, 1922, in Lockhart to Lucile Beall Southwell and George Thomas Southwell and was the grandson of the late Rev. and Mrs. Samuel Barnes Beall and Mr. and Mrs. George T. Southwell Sr., founder of the San Antonio Rubber Stamp Company, currently doing business as The Southwell Company.
Dr. Southwell grew up in the oil field town of Tomball, and served in the U.S. Navy. He received a doctorate in literature from the University of  Texas in Austin. During his years in the Foreign Service, he served as the United States Consul in Mexico City and Guadalajara. He received numerous literary awards during his tenure as a professor of English at  Texas A&M University in College Station and the University of Houston, where he was chairman of the English Department for many years. Dr. Southwell’s repertoires of publications include the novel, “If All the Rebels Die,” as well as numerous works in the areas of literary criticism and philosophy.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Bamford Southwell, son Michael Beall Southwell (wife J.J. Finnell Southwell) and daughter Teresa Bamford Southwell, all of Houston, and two sisters, Ann Southwell Richards Spellmann of Corpus Christi and Raemona Southwell McNeill of Beeville.
A private memorial Mass was held in the Chapel of St. Basil at the University of St. Thomas in Houston on March 27.

Tumlinson
Sidney Calvin Tumlinson, 93, of Corpus Christi died Monday, March 29, 2004.
He was born on May 10, 1910, in San Antonio to William T. Tumlinson and Dovie Florence North. Mr. Tumlinson was an assistant manager at Flato Electric Supply Company from 1936 to 1975. He was a U.S. veteran and served as a corporal in the Air Force during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife and brother, Robert Tumlinson.
Survivors include his stepson, retired Capt. B. Fontaine; four step-granddaughters: Jackie (Kenny) Johns of Corpus Christi, Joline (Chuck) Flitton of Port Towsend, Wash., Janice (Tubby) Thomas of Beeville and Judy Fontaine of Suquamish, Wash.; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 1, at Corpus Christi’s Seaside Memorial Park at 10 a.m.
Arrangements were handled through Seaside Funeral Home, Corpus Christi.

Garcia
Juanita Abrigo Garcia, 95, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004.
Rosary was to be recited Friday at 7 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated today (Saturday) at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Richard Gonzales officiating. Burial will follow in Normanna’s Del Bosque Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Simon Moya Jr., Samuel Moya Sr., Felix Hernandez, Tomas Abrigo, Patrick Lee Hayes and Jimmy and Felix Abrigo.
Mrs. Garcia was born in Normanna on June 24, 1908, to Felix and Adelina (Espinoza) Abrigo. She was a housewife and a Catholic.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Santos Garcia Moya.
Survivors include her daughters, Ramona Kittl Garcia and Maria G. Donahue, both of Beeville, and Estella G. Kammerer of Winona, Minn.; Manuel Garcia Sr. of Weslaco; two sisters, San Juana Hernandez of Beeville and Felicita Segura of Port Lavaca; a brother, Domingo Abrigo of Refugio; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Hamilton
Mary Elizabeth Miller Hamilton, 97, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at her home following a short illness.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Bill Duke and the Rev. Homer Hanna, retired from the South  Texas Children’s Home staff and longtime friend of the deceased.
Mrs. Hamilton was born in Beeville on Feb. 3, 1907, to Rufus Eugene and Anna (Morey) Miller. She was a descendant of Samuel Read Miller, one of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred,” the earliest  Texas settlers, and of William Jasper Miller, who moved to Beeville from San Patricio in the 1880s.
She graduated from A.C.  Jones High School in 1925 as valedictorian. She received a bacehlor of journalism degree from the University of  Texas at Austin in 1930 and was awarded the Sigma Delta Chi scholarship key. She taught journalism at Brackenridge High School in San Antonio from 1930 to 1938 and was honored in 1934 by Columbia Scholastic Press Association as one of four outstanding journalism teachers in the country for that year. She later attended Tyler Commercial College and served as a secretary for several years before her marriage in San Antonio on July 23, 1945, to Dr. Lawrence Edwin Hamilton, formerly of Dallas. Her husband died in 1963 in Rogers, where he practiced medicine for 17 years.
In 1963, Mrs. Hamilton was employed by the University of Corpus Christi, where she worked in various capacities, as secretary, director of public information and alumni affairs, and finally as secretary to the president. After UCC became Corpus Christi State University, and later  Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, she worked as part-time secretary to the director of the physical plant, until her retirement in 1983. In 1970, while she was serving as director of public information, she was named to Who’s Who of American Women and Foremost Women in Communications.
Mrs. Hamilton moved to Beeville in 1986 and was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, BALL (Be Active; Live Longer), the Daughters of the Republic of  Texas, Theta Sigma Phi (honorary fraternity for women in journalism) and Alpha Xi Delta (social group).
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sisters, Lois and Christine (Robert) Turner, and her two brothers, Jasper and Oliver Lee.
Survivors include her stepdaughter, Ann Hamilton of Dallas; two step-granddaughters, Susan (David) Claunch (and their son Will) of Austin and Pamela (Hank) Chilton of Venice,  Calif.; a nephew, Robert Eugene Miller Sr.; a great-nephew, Robert Eugene Miller Jr.; two great-nieces, Marilyn Bolton and Marlene Miller; three great-great-nieces, Brittany and Brooke Bolton and Cameron Zbranek, all of Beeville; her cousins, Leah Jane Corrigan, Sarah Hitchcock and Mary Claire Ethridge of Beeville and Jim Millikin of Fischer; and her friend and helper, Maria Velasquez.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the charity of one’s choice.

Hassell
Lois Marie Garrison Hassell, 82, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at LaBahia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Goliad.
The funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Seaside Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. Brother George Pledger of Weber Road Church of Christ will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
Mrs. Hassell was born on Sept.11, 1921 in Ralls, to Altie Maggie (Smyers) and Lester Levi Garrison. She retired from Central Power and Light Company with 39 years of service and was a member of the Weber Road Church of Christ.
She was married to Sgt. Cecil Vensin Hassell, USAF, on Nov. 5, 1943, in Corpus Christi, by Rev. R.O. Cawker. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan.27, 1945, over the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Louie Edwin Garrison, Bob Lee Garrison and James Judiah Garrison.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Betty and Argie Lee Gilmer of Richardson, Lester and Carrol Garrison of Goliad County, Edwin and Martha Garrison of Houston, and Sharon and Harold Howard of Lynnwood, Wash.; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews.
Arrangements were handled through Seaside Memorial Park and Funeral Home, Corpus Christi.

Houlihan
Charles Leo “Chief” Houlihan, 81, died on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, in M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, following complications from colon cancer.
Rosary was recited Sunday at 6 p.m. at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Orange Grove. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at the same location. Interment with military honors followed at Gussettville Cemetery in Live Oak County.
Mr. Houlihan was born in Beeville on Aug. 24, 1922. He was the principal of Orange Grove High School from 1967 to 1976 and county superintendent of Bee County. He was commander in chief of the Orange Grove Veterans of Foreign Wars, in addition to being active at St. John of the Cross and in the community. He was a rancher in Orange Grove and in Duval County. While serving his country in World War II, he was shot down and became a prisoner of war. He was later awarded the Purple Heart for his sacrifice. Mr. Houlihan received the Silver Beaver award from the National Council of Boy Scouts for distinguished service at the local level.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Eloise Houlihan; his children, Cheryl  Jackson and Loyd “Eddie” Houlihan of Corpus Christi and Debra Houlihan of Houston; two sisters, Doris Wilson of Beeville and Mildred Robinson of Orange Grove; five grandchildren; and many friends.
Arrangements were handled by Robstown Memorial Funeral Home, Inc.

Burchfield
Burdon “Gene” Eugene Burchfield Jr., 76, a resident of Weed,  Calif., died at his home on May 6, 2004.
Mr. Burchfield was born on Feb. 12, 1928, in Palestine, to Eunice Griffin and Burdon Eugene Burchfield. He was raised in Berclair and stationed at NAS Chase Field with the shore patrol in the early 1960s.
He served 28 years in the U.S. Navy, 26 of those years on submarines. He joined the Navy on Feb. 19, 1946, and retired Sept. 14, 1975. At that time he moved to Fort  Jones where he made his home until 1986 when he moved to Weed.
He also did small appliance repair, was a truck driver and a security guard. He married Mary Burchfield on Nov. 15, 1986, in Reno, Nev.
He was a member of VFW of Weed, Ben Ali Temple, Scottish Rite, Siskiyou County Shriner Club, Klamath Scottish Rite Club, Order of Eastern Star #4, Northern Star Lodge #91, Siskiyou County Amateur Radio Association, Southern Oregon Packet Radio Association, Crater Lake Amateur Repeater Association, Quarter Century Wireless Association, National Weather Service of Medford, military Affiliated Radio System, Western Public Service System and American Radio Relay League.
He was involved in ham radio, packet radio and GPS, and enjoyed computers.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Burchfield of Weed; a son, Burdon Eugene Burchfield III of Arizona; stepsons, Gary Ralls and Larry Ralls, both of Weed; a daughter, Kathryn Hanshy of Medford, Ore.; brothers, Charles Burchfield of Sealey and Kenneth Burchfield of Purvis, Miss.; brother-in-law, Glenn Shofield of Sacramento,  Calif.; two sisters, Winnie McCarroll of Shiner and Margaret Wilson of Kingsville; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin Burchfield, and two sisters, Dorris Shofield and Linnie Rasbeary.
A graveside service was held Friday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at Winema Cemetery in Weed.
Arrangements were made by Mt. Shasta Memorial Chapel.
