Bender
Sylvia Marie Bender, 54, of George West died Thursday, June 17, 2004. She was born Aug. 28, 1949, in New Prague, Minn., to Chester and Anne (Bothelo) Nielson.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Nielson.
Survivors include her mother, Anne Nielson; her husband, Donald Bender of George West; two sons, Donald Bender Jr. of Killeen and Michael Bender of Beeville; two daughters, Ruth (Rodney) Stafford of Three Rivers and Denise (Tracey) Dickens of George West; an aunt, Elizabeth Camara of Newport, R.I.; a brother, Tom Nielson of Chicago, Ill.; and two sisters, Doris Wright of Des Moines, Iowa, and Cheryl Molina of Corpus Christi.
Rosary was held Monday at Roberson Funeral Chapel in Three Rivers. The funeral was celebrated Tuesday, with Father Piotr J. Gajda of St. George Catholic Church officiating. Burial followed at the St. George Catholic Cemetery in George West.

Garcia
Gilberto Garcia, 91, died Friday, June 18, 2004, in Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville.
Visitation was held Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home, with a rosary that evening at 7 o’clock at the same location. Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Eddie G. Garcia officiating. Burial followed in OLV Cemetery No. 2.
Pallbearers were Sergio Garcia, Ruben Gonzalez, Roland Garcia, Jessie Alcorta, Manuel Cuevas and Ronald Aleman. Honorary pallbearers were Eric, Alexis and Leslie Lopez, Jordan Garcia, Richard Lane Cuevas and Paul Alcorta.
Mr. Garcia was born in Bluntzer on Oct. 27, 1912, to Juan and Paula (Gonzales) Garcia. He married Santos Cuellar in September 1937 in Beeville. He was a retired rancher and a member of OLV.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Garcia, who died in 1997; one brother and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Santos C. Garcia of Beeville; a daughter-in-law, Rosario “Chayo” Garcia of Houston; three granddaughters, Melissa Lynn Urdiales and Ronald Aleman and Tabitha G. Cuevas and husband Manuel, all of Beeville; and Rebecca Alcorta and husband Jessie of Pflugerville; six great-grandchildren; his best friend, Schosky Garcia; three brothers, Raul Garcia of Skidmore, Juan Garcia of Austin and Miguel Garcia of Seminole; and two sisters, Martina Franco of Skidmore and Genoveva Cuellar of Lovington, N.M.

Aguillon
Maria Elena Paiz Aguillon, 59, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at her home in George West.
A prayer service was to be held on Friday at 7 p.m. at Rosa De Saron Pentecostal Church in George West, with Trinidad Paiz III officiating. Funeral will be held at the same location today (Saturday) at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at the George West Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Johnny Aguillon, Humberto Lee Paiz Aguillon, Michael Salazar, Joe Ruben Chabera, Arnold Bernal Jr. and Avery Paiz.
Mrs. Aguillon was preceded in death by her father, Trinidad Paiz Sr., on Dec.21, 2003. She was born on July 13, 1944 in Mathis. She was a homemaker and worked for Legacy Home Health. She married Humberto Aguillon on Oct. 25, 1980, in Dimmitt, and was a member of the Rosa De Saron Pentecostal Church.
She is survived by her spouse, Humberto Aguillon of George West; two sons; Johnny Joe Aguillon of Three Rivers and Humberto Lee Paiz Aguillon of George West; her mother; Concepcion Sepeda Paiz of George West; one brother; Trinidad Paiz Jr. of Abilene; four sisters; Oralia Salazar of George West, Linda Berna of Corpus Christi, Esmeralda Perez of Corpus Christi and Diana Bradt of Kingsville; two grandchildren; Realyn Pamela Aguillon and Madison Lexi Aguillon.
Bennett
Edward Ora Bennett, 78, formerly of Beeville, died at the Herman Memorial Hospital in Houston on Friday, June 11, 2004.
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents, Rena Wave (Pardo) Bennett and Lee Ottis Stoneking, and a half-brother, Milo Bennett.
Survivors include his children, Jacquie Johnson and husband Philip of Ontario, Jim Bennett and wife Pat of Ontario and Terry Bennett and wife Robin of Alabama; and a nephew, Richard Bennett of Ontario.
Prior to his retirement from International Truck and Engine Corporation, Mr. Bennett saw active duty during World War II with the 52nd Rainbow Division. Known by his friends as “Mr. Ed,” he will be remembered as having been a past member of both Branch 28 and Branch 185 of the Royal Canadian Legion, Canadian Belgium Dutch Club, Chatham and the Kent Clover Leaf Club of Chatham, Ontario.
Former legion friends and family will gather at a later date for a private interment in the Pardoville Cemetery, Pardoville, Ontario, with Branch 185, Royal Canadian Legion Padre Rev. Bruce Cook officiating.
Funeral arrangements were handled through Blenheim Community Funeral Home.
Longoria
Celia Garcia Longoria, 83, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, in San Antonio.
Rosary was to be recited Friday at 7 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated today (Saturday) at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Eddie G. Garcia officiating. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Victory Cemetery No. 2.
Mrs. Longoria was born in Berclair on June 23, 1920, to Rogerio and Guadalupe Garcia. She married Berto V. Longoria in Beeville on July 24, 1941. She resided in Pettus and was a housewife and a Catholic.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alberto V. Longoria, who died on Oct. 2, 1978, her parents and a sister, Dora Acevedo.
Survivors include a daughter, Esther Baca of Sommerville; two sons, Daniel Longoria of Quito, Ecuador and Richard (Irma) Longoria of San Antonio; two brothers, Hilario Garcia of San Antonio and Rogerio Garcia of Pettus; three sisters, Sofia Martinez and Elvia Mirelez, both of San Antonio and Tules Baldillez of Pettus; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Dora Aguilar, 82, of Mathis died Friday, June 11, 2004.
She was born on March 21, 1922, in San Diego. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pedro V. Aguilar, in 2002.
A prayer service was held Saturday at 7 p.m. at Dobie Funeral Home chapel. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Mennonite Church in Mathis with the Rev. Calderon officiating. Burial followed in Casa Blanca Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary (Homer) Garza of Mathis and Emma (Adam) Coronado of Beeville; two sons, Abel (Linda) Aguilar of Port Lavaca and Paul (Julie) Aguilar of Big Spring; four sisters, Ofelia Garcia of Sandia, Santos Aguilar of Orange Grove, and Elva Olivio and Narsisa Rodriguez, both of Bay City; three brothers, Ruben Aguilar of Sandia, Adan Aguilar of Tynan and Rogelio Aguilar of Alice; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled through Dobie Funeral Home, Mathis.
DeMerse
Richard “Rich” DeMerse, 42, of Marquette, Mich., died Thursday, June 3, 2004.
He was born on June 22, 1961, in Marquette. In 1981 he moved to Texas, working in several areas of the state. While doing so he met his wife, Terri Henderson, at First Baptist Church in Beeville. They were married on Dec. 31, 1983. In 1987, they moved to Marquette for employment with the Michigan Department of Corrections. Mr. DeMerse was active in area athletics, including softball, skiing, boxing, biking and hunting. He was a member of Lake Superior Christian Church, where he was an elder, teacher and lay preacher. He had a special interest in the Christian Leadership Institute.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Terri Henderson DeMerse; his son, Joel DeMerse of Jacksonville, Fla.; his daughter, Jain DeMerse of Marquette; his parents, Edith and Richard DeMerse of Marquette; his brother, Stuart (Shannon) DeMerse of DeSoto; his grandmother, Lorraine Nancarrow of Marquette; his uncles, Jim and Tom Nancarrow of Marquette; his father and mother-in-law, Charles and Hisako Henderson of Beeville; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 7, in the Lake Superior Christian Church with Bud Holmes and Bob Heppner officiating. Special music included “Don’t Cry for Me,” a song written in Mr. DeMerse’s memory by his sister-in-law, June Robison. The song was sung by his son, Joel, who was accompanied by Mrs. Robison on the piano.
Members of the Michigan Department of Corrections served as honor guard and pallbearers. Burial followed in Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Rich Demerse Memorial Fund at Lake Superior Christian Church.

Hertel
Joyce Elaine Hertel, 69, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville.
Family visitation will take place today (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Visitation will be today from 1 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Goliad, with Pastor Paul Zwarich officiating. A luncheon will be served preceding the service at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Skidmore’s Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth, Michael and Gary Duge, Kirk Yaiger, Troy Berthold and Johnny Valenta. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Hausmann, Kyle and Howard Duge, Ernest Boemer, David Ball, Scott Yariger and Marvin Lee Hertel.
Mrs. Hertel was born in Skidmore on Nov. 28, 1934, to August and Milly (Krupa) Duge. She married Otto P. Hertel on March 5, 1954, in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Goliad. She resided in Berclair and was a homemaker and a retired teller with the First National Bank in Beeville.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Edward Duge.
Survivors include her husband, Otto P. Hertel of Berclair; a son, Craig Otto Hertel of Midland; a daughter, Craiet J. Hertel of Victoria; and three brothers, Edgar Duge of Corpus Christi and John and James Duge, both of Victoria.

Linney
Harry A. Linney, 89, of George West died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Live Oak Nursing Center in George West.
Mr. Linney was born on March 26, 1915, in Refugio to Justin and Eleanor (Johnson) Linney. He earned a bachelor of science in pharmacy from the University of Texas and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a captain (retired).
Mr. Linney married Ruth E. Impson in Clareville on Sept. 4, 1937. He was owner and pharmacist of Linney Drug Store for 47 1/2 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in George West and served as past president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. He was named George West Citizen of the Year in 1963 and an honorary member of FFA/FHA. He taught Sunday school for 24 years and was a relief pharmacist at Cobb’s Pharmacy for 12 years.
His wife preceded him in death on June 28, 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Ed) Massey of Clareville; two grandchildren, Will and Sarah Massey, both of College Station; a sister, Doris Marie Moore Zelleer of Fredericksburg; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in George West with the Rev. Mel Hazlewood officiating. Music was provided by organist Nancy McKinney accompanied by Vicki Riser, who sang “On Eagles Wings.” Burial followed in the George West Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ross Harris, Jim Warren, Gene Riser, Lamon Bennett, Jeff Porter and Floyd Wolfe. Honorary pallbearers were Tige Brown, Don Winsor, Holman Massey and Brooks Schley.

Janice Mabry Allen, 91, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004.
Visitation was held Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Funeral services were held Friday at 10 a.m. at the same location with the Rev. Bill Duke officiating. Burial followed in Glenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Michael Orr, Michael Shelton, Michael Watson, Erwin Massengale, Skeeter Johnson and David Hurst. Honorary pallbearers were Lance Tindol, John Postiglione, Kenny Roden, Sheppard Nance and Thad Nance.
Mrs. Allen was born in Westhoff on Feb. 21, 1913, to Manly Henderson Mabry and Grace Alamo Shults. She was a lifelong Methodist and a retired office manager. She resided in Beeville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Barbara Nance and Alberta Mabry; a brother, Manly Mabry; her first husband, Joseph Halberdier; and her second husband, Harry Brown Allen.
Survivors include her brothers, Stanly Mabry of Edna and Don Mabry of Karnes City; her nieces, Dana (John) Postiglione of North Carolina, Lana (Erwin) Massengale of Beeville, Katy Roden of San Antonio, Bridget (David) Hurst of Victoria, Martha (Michael) Shelton of Austin, Susanna (Michael) Orr of Austin, Connie Sue Mabry of South Carolina, Marsha Schendel of San Antonio and Shyan Cunningham of Edna; her nephews, “Shep” (Angie) Nance of North Carolina, Thad (Karen) Nance of Wimberley, Terry and Mark Mabry, both of Edna, and numerous other nieces and nephews.
