Belew
Tressa Nan (Pat) Belew, 83, a homemaker and former Lum’s Shoe Store manager, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, at Spring Season Nursing Home.
Mrs. Belew was born on May 14, 1919, in Comanche. She married Woodrow Belew on Jan. 1, 1938, in Winters. She moved to Beeville 10 years ago to be near her son and his family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Beeville and had been a Methodist all her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow, in 1985.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Bennie and Sally Belew of Beeville and Edwin (Butch) and Carolyn Belew of Dublin; two sisters, Joyce Gibson of Granbury and Ada Grose of West; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Beeville on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the First United Methodist Church.

Brister
Ennis Lone Brister Jr., 54, of Cuero died Friday, April 23, 2004.
He was born in Freer on June 15, 1949, to Ennis Lone Brister Sr. and Ova Estelle (Merritt) Brister. Mr. Brister was a roughneck in the petro chemical industry. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson and a sister, Rosie Lee Brister.
Survivors include three daughters, Shannon Colwell of Conroe, Sheila Alaniz of Victoria and Sherri Davis of Bridge City; a son, Evan Lone Brister of Victoria; and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be announced at a later date.
Arrangements were handled through Freund Funeral Home, Cuero.

Lovaasen
Elaine Mary Lovaasen, 76, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at Clear Lake Regional Hospital in Webster.
She is the sister of Thelma Kolasci of Bryan, formerly of Beeville. Mrs. Lovaasen was born on Jan. 2, 1928, in Hampton to Oscar and Edna Breaux. She was a resident of Woodville since 1998.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest Lovaasen of Woodville; three daughters, Jackie Applegate of Woodville, Linda Mabe and her husband Jim of Tiki Island, and Cathy Black and her husband Bill Sr. of  Texas City; two sisters, Thelma Kolasci and her husband Paul Jr. of Bryan, formerly of Beeville, and Jeannette Griffith of Beaumont; a brother, Moody Breaux and his wife Judy of Orange; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at James Crowder Funeral Home in LaMarque. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home with Dr. R.L. Calhoun officiating. Interment will be at the Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

Ortiz
Julia Chavarria Ortiz, 79, died Saturday, April 24, 2004, in Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville.
Rosary was recited Sunday at 7 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at 2 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Father Balaswamy Pasala officiating. Burial followed in Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Mark Gonzales, John Paul Gonzales, Ameliono Gonzales Jr., Richard Gonzales, Robert Ortiz and Arnold Ortiz.
Honorary pallbearers were Richard, Joe and Alex Zamora.
Mrs. Ortiz was born in Beeville on April 9, 1925, to Anastacio and Pilar (Garcia) Chavarria. She was a housewife and a Catholic. She was preceded in death by a brother, Anastacio Chavarria.
Survivors include her husband, Alfredo Ortiz Sr. of Beeville; three daughters, Louisa (Richard) Zamora of Idaho, Amalia (Ismael) Silva and Estella Ortiz, both of Beeville; six sons, Ameliono Gonzales, Alfredo (Carol) Ortiz Jr., Ray (Terrie) Ortiz, Eddie Ortiz and Robert (Jessie) Ortiz, all of Beeville, and Antonio Gonzales Jr. of Oregon; a sister, Elvira Chavarria; three brothers, Amalio (Eva) Chavarria, Benito Chavarria and Oscar (Maria) Chavarria, all of Beeville; 26 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Ortiz
Lucy Gomez Ortiz, 66, a homemaker, youth volunteer and former San Patricio and Bee County 4-H Club manager, died Saturday, April 24, 2004.
She was born June 8, 1937, in Sinton and was preceded in death by her mother, Felicitas Thomas Gomez, her husband, Felix R. Ortiz, infant son, Felix Ortiz Jr., and her grandson, Kevin Michael Standridge.
Survivors include her father, H.P. Gomez of Sinton; two daughters, Felecia Ortiz of Skidmore and Becky Poynter and husband Andy of Beeville; five grandchildren, Kyle and Kayla Standridge, Cheryl and Drew Poynter and Dusty Dawn Waldrop of Beeville; one brother, Hipolito T. Gomez of California; one nephew, Juan Gomez of California; one niece, Anita Gomez of California; and one step-sister, Francis Davila of Austin.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ritchea-Gonzales Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Huckman officiating. Interment followed in the Eternal Rest Cemetery in Sinton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South  Texas Children’s Home in Pettus or to the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Oncology Department.

Swails
Wayne Robert Swails, 76, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, in Corpus Christi.
He was born on May 18, 1927, in  Oklahoma City, Okla., to Robert Jeremiah Swails and Lela E. Sasser Swails.
He had been a sign contractor in his own business, SWACO Signs, at Vinita, Okla., until moving to his retirement home near Beeville. He was married to Helen E. Schott Davis for 18 years, the mother of his four children. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II then worked as a firefighter for 39 years and retired from his civil service duty as a USAF fireman in 1977.
Mr. Swails lived in  Oklahoma, Weslaco, Corpus Christi and Denver,  Colo. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Skidmore. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy (Dillard) Swails, in  Oklahoma after 21 years of marriage.
Survivors include his four children, John (Mona) Swails of Choctaw, Okla., Jerry Swails and Janet (Terry) Yarbrough, both of Corpus Christi, and Joyce (John) Eckstein of Independence, Ky.; a brother, Thomas W. (Evelyn) Swails of Yoakum; a sister, Thelma I. McMullin of Edmond, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Richard and Rene Swails, Kelli Bradbury, Cimarron Yarbrough, Jeff, Jennifer and Julie Eckstein; and two great-grandchildren, Cassie and Torri.
Visitation will be held Saturday at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home at noon. Funeral services will be the same day at 2 p.m. at that location. Interment will follow in Skidmore’s Evergreen Cemetery.

Fife
Aubrey R. “Cowboy” Fife Sr., 84, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at Spring Season Nursing Home.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home chapel with Brother Lee Bevly of Skidmore’s First Baptist Church officiating. A private burial will follow.
Mr. Fife was born in Groesbeck on Jan. 27, 1920, to John Thomas and Mary Ann (Johnson) Fife. He resided in Skidmore. He was a heavy equipment operator and a Baptist.
Survivors include his daughters, Linda Wenger of Corpus Christi and Rita (Jim) Dickinson of Skidmore; a son, Aubrey Fife Jr. of  Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, James (Cheryl) Bennett, Jason (Ali) Dickenson, Honey (John) Cuevas, Lisa Chapman, Mike Wenger and Darla and Robbie Fife; and three great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Alyson Bennett and Weston Cuevas.

Hamilton
Hance Henry Hamilton Jr., 80, died on May 6, 2004.
The former Beeville resident and businessman was more recently a chemistry and mathematics instructor at Eastfield College in Mesquite who spent his retirement years in Dallas. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathryn, and is survived by his wife, Marybelle, son, Bruce, daughter-in-law, Cynthia, and grandchildren, Elizabeth and Bradford.
Dr. Hamilton was born Feb. 23, 1924, in Jackson, Tenn., to Hance Henry Hamilton of San Antonio and Myriam Rebecca Griffin of Jackson. His parents moved to Fort Worth in 1926 and to San Antonio in 1929 where Hance attended Woodlawn Elementary, Mark Twain Junior High, Horace Mann Junior High and Thomas  Jefferson High. In high school, he was active in Junior ROTC and The  Jefferson Forum, and he was president of The Science Club. Graduating in January 1942, he worked for seven months in the laundry research laboratory of the J.B. Ford Company in Wyandotte, Mich. He enrolled at The A&M College of  Texas that fall and enlisted in the Army Reserve Corps. Called to active duty at the end of his freshman year, he received basic training and was subsequently assigned to the 91st Chemical Mortar Battalion at Camp Swift,  Texas. The battalion crossed Omaha Beach in the fall of 1944 and went into combat on Christmas Eve near the France-Luxembourg border. During the Battle of the Bulge and subsequent operations, Sgt. Hamilton was awarded eight citations including the Bronze Star and European Theater Medal with three battle stars. Upon release from active duty on Nov. 11, 1945, he returned to  Texas A&M, receiving a B.S. in management (industrial) engineering in January 1949. He was elected to The Scholarship Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi. During his senior year, on June 23, 1948, he married Marybelle Stoltzfus of Tuleta.
The Hamiltons entered the laundry and dry cleaning business with Hance’s father in Beeville, founding the Bee-Clean Linen and Uniform Service. The family also had a business in Kenedy for a year, and Hance was an active Rotarian in both towns. In 1964, after his father’s death, he sold the business and returned to  Texas A&M for graduate studies in chemistry, being awarded a Ph.D. in 1969. As a graduate student, he was elected to Phi Lambda Upsilon and Sigma Xi.
Dr. Hamilton moved to Dallas in 1970 and spent 19 years on the Eastfield College faculty. In retirement, he compiled several detailed family genealogies. He was a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Clan Hamilton Society, the Hamilton National Genealogical Society, the Dallas Genealogical Society, and the American Chemical Society. He was a Master Mason and life long Republican.
Inurnment will be at Beeville’s Glenwood Cemetery in a private service. Memorials may be made to the  Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 2222 Welborn St., Dallas, TX 75219.

Holubec
Bertha Jean “Jeanne” Hector Holubec, 71, died Friday, May 7, 2004, in Houston.
Visitation was held Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Funeral services took place Monday at the same location with the Rev. David Davidson officiating, assisted by Freddie Hector Jr. and Randy Hector. Special music included “I’ll See You in the Rapture,” “Amazing Grace” and “He is Here,” with singers Vivian Sumrow and Tiffany Holubec. Burial followed in Glenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Slade Dial, Eddie Hector, Steve Billings, Leon Holubec, Roy Sugarek and Tommy Holubec. Honorary pallbearers were Justin Hector, Kenneth Galloway, David Billings and Craig Hector.
Mrs. Holubec was born in Skidmore on Jan. 31, 1933, to Ernest and Bertha (Upchurch) Hector. She married Raymond W. Holubec Sr. on Sept. 14, 1946, in Uvalde. She was a resident of Katy and a former Beeville resident. She belonged to Family Life Assembly of God Church in Katy.
Mrs. Holubec was a retired bank officer for First National Bank. After her retirement she worked part time for State Bank and Trust. She was a charter member of the auxiliary at the Beeville hospital. She was active in her church and the many positions she held there.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond William Holubec Sr.; three sons, Raymond Holubec Jr., Jerry Holubec Sr. and John Holubec; three sisters, Margie Billings, Mary Catherine Hector and Betty Ann Hector; and two brothers, Ernest Thomas Hector and Freddie Ray Hector Sr.
Survivors include her son, James Lee Holubec Sr. and wife Tiffany of Katy; a sister, Shirley Dial and husband Jack of Beeville; a brother, Eddie Hector Sr. and wife Barbara of Dayton; eight grandchildren, Raymond Holubec III and Nathan Holubec, both of Tucson, Ariz., Jamie Wilkins of Sealy, Christy Bouverette of Caro, Mich., Jerry Holubec II of Forreston, Elizabeth Cvikel of Hillsboro, James Holubec II of Manville and Heather Holubec Vance of Madisonville, Ky.; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Snider
J.W. “Jay” Snider, 84, of Hubbard died Monday, May 10, 2004, at a Waco hospital.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Wade Funeral Chapel in Hubbard with the Rev. James Hooper officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Snider was born in Delia on Nov. 3, 1919, the youngest of 11 children born to Richard and Mattie Little Snider. He grew up in the Bowman community where he also attended school. He married Cornelia Graves in Hubbard on July 3, 1942. He farmed in the Bowman community near Hubbard and also worked on aircraft for North American in Dallas and was a welder for Sinclair Pipeline in Weatherford. Mr. Snider also worked for the civil service at James Connally Air Base in Waco and at Chase Field before retiring in 1980. At that time, he and his wife moved back to Hubbard. He served on the LaVega ISD school board for three years and was an Army veteran, having served in the 1631st Engineer Construction Battalion during World War II. Mr. Snider was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hubbard.
He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Cornelia Snider of Hubbard; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and David Nichols of Waco; a brother, Leonard Snider of Mount Calm; a sister, Juanita Goodman of Waco; and three grandchildren, Russell Orin Nichols and wife Jessica Joy and Ryan Jay and Jessica Kate Nichols.
Memorials may be made to Fairview Cemetery or Hubbard First Baptist Church Building Fund.
Arrangements were handled by Wade Funeral Home, Hubbard.
