Ethel Lucille Swain
Ethel L. Swain, 98, of Colville, WA, died March 28, 2002 in Colville.
At her request, no funeral services were held.
She was born Dec. 19, 1903, in Gatesville, the daughter of the late Thomas and Lou Ida (Pilkinton) Hackney. She was raised and attended school in Gatesville. On Dec. 14, 1920, she married Walter Oden Swain in Waco. They resided in Diboll until 1935 when they moved to south Houston. She worked in the home as a seamstress and cook. She returned to Gatesville in the early 1980s before moving to Colville in 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1953; and her daughter, Wilma Mae Swain Kilpatrick, in 1992.
Survivors include two sisters, Jewel Spence of Gatesville and Eunice Potter of Canoga Park, CA; and two granddaughters.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
Ann Colson
Ann Colson of Gatesville died May 27, 2002 at her residence. She was 67.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Killeen City Cemetery.
Mrs. Colson was born Jan. 1, 1935 in Overton County, TN. She was the daughter of the late Cecil and Linnie Ray Key. She grew up and attended school in Cookeville, TN. She married Travis Colson Nov. 18, 1952 and they resided in Killeen. He preceded her in death in February of 1991. She had resided in Gatesville since 1995 and was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, James Edward Colson in 1971.
She is survived by a son, Frank Colson of Gatesville; three brothers, Charles Key of Tennessee, Homer Key of Florence and Claude Key of Tennessee; and two grandchildren.
Fawn Diane Carl
Fawn Diane Carl, of Lampasas and formerly of Gatesville, died May 26, 2002 as the result of an automobile accident in Burnet County. She was 37.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Briggs Gamel Funeral Home Chapel in Lampasas with Brother Jerry Connolly officiating. Burial was in Townsen Cemetery near Adamsville.
Mrs. Carl was born May 14, 1965, in Lampasas, the daughter of Jimmy Summerville and Dorothy Wolfe Summerville. She graduated from Springerville, AZ, in 1982. On July 28, 1993, she married Thomas Carl in Gatesville. She was a secretary for the special education department in the Lampasas Independent School District. She had lived in Lampasas for four years, moving there from Gatesville. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas (T.C.) Carl of Lampasas; sons, Ashton James Perkins and Kyle Gage Perkins, both of Lampasas; step-daughter, Brittany Nicole Carl of Lampasas; parents, Jimmy Summerville and Dorothy Wolfe Summerville of Lampasas; sister, Katherine LaDale Perkins of Lampasas; brothers, James Warren Summerville of Refugio, William Wayne Summerville of San Antonio and Robert Earl Summerville of Canyon Lake; and grandparents, Ruby Wolfe and Jean Chambers, both of Lampasas.
Lella Mae Bellow
Lella Mae Bellow of Nederland died May 21, 2002 in a Port Arthur hospital. She was 89.
Funeral services were held May 24 at Nederland Avenue Church of Christ with Don Cain officiating. Burial was in Oak Buff Memorial Park in Port Neches.
She was born March 23, 1913, to the late Kim and Molly Necessary in the Coryell County community of Arnett. She had lived in the Nederland area since 1943. She was retired from the food service department of the Nederland Independent School District. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.J. “Curly” Bellow on May 8, 1971.
Survivors include a son, Edward Bellow Jr. of Frisco; two daughters, Linda Adams of Lumberton and Dena Foust of Nederland; one sister, Ora Bartlett of Gatesville; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jacqueline Norfleet Lusby
Jacqueline Norfleet Lusby, 69, of Gatesville, died June 14, 2002 in a local nursing home.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Restland Cemetery.
Mrs. Lusby was born June 14, 1933, in Franklin, VA, to the late Otis and Lucille Vann McDonald. She was reared and attended school in Franklin. On June 20, 1953, she married Jim Lusby. They resided in Florida until 1975 when they moved to Gatesville where they resided the rest of their married life. He preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 1999. She was a member of Hay Valley Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Reginald Norfleet.
Survivors include a son, Eugene Lusby of Buda; three daughters, Sharon Lusby and LuAnn Renner, both of Gatesville, and Renee Search of Brownwood; and five grandchildren.
The family requests memorials be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
Carl Houston Wright Jr.
Carl Houston Wright Jr., 77, of McGregor died June 18, 2002 in Temple.
Graveside services were held Friday at Arrowhead Ranch Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne McKamie officiating.
Mr. Wright was born Jan. 12, 1925 in the South Bosque Community to the late Carl Houston and Madge (Cluck) Wright. He married Lavauhn Richie on July 2, 1943 in Belton. He lived in Coryell County near Mother Neff State Park.
He served in the United States Army from 1943-1946 and was a rancher until his retirement in 1988. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Euell Standefer and Sarah Ellen (Allen) Cluck; paternal grandparents, J.N. and Mary Emma (Cook) Wright; father and mother-in-law, a son-in-law and a granddaughter.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Ronald Carl Wright of McGregor; two daughters, Charlotte Ann Wright of McGregor and Eva Rosemary Wright of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 8575 Gibbs Drive, San Diego, CA 92123.
Bessie Guynes
Bessie Guynes, 75, of San Angelo died June 17, 2002 in a San Angelo nursing home.
Graveside services were held Thursday in the Grape Creek Cemetery with Jehovah Witness Minister Mark Hellman officiating.
Mrs. Guynes was born Oct. 4, 1927 in Buffalo Gap, to Harvey and Emma Havner. She married Joseph Zack Guynes in Ballinger on Nov. 30, 1942. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a son-in-law.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Annie Haby and Goldie Rosser, both of San Angelo; and one son, Ray Guynes of San Angelo; a brother, D. Havner of Abilene; two sisters, Faye Dobbs of Gatesville and Lillian Elliott of Bowie; 13 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of San Angelo.
Jose Aguilera Valdez
Jose Aguilera Valdez, 50, of Gatesville died June 23, 2002 at his residence.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel with Father Hilario Guajardo officiating. Interment was in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Valdez was born Nov. 2, 1951 in Mexico to the late Cecilio and Juanita Valdez Aguilera. He moved to Gatesville in 1986 and worked for James Dixon and an Austin construction company. Mr. Valdez was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his brother, Raul Aguilera.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Klutts of Gatesville; and his son, Joseph Klutts Aguilera.
Taylee Jade Kelley
Taylee Jade Kelley, 15 months, of Mound, died June 22, 2002 at a Gatesville hospital.
Graveside services were held Tuesday at the Mound Cemetery.
She was born March 6, 2001, to Roddy and Teresa (Arthur) Kelley.
Survivors include her parents, Roddy and Teresa Kelley of Mound; grandparents, David and Leslie Kelley of Belton, Donna and Richard Arthur of Blanding, Utah, and Oren and Tammy Montgomery of Mound; and great-grandparents, Horace and Gladys Kelley of Salado.
Norman Sylvester Vroman
Norman Sylvester Vroman of Killeen died June 29, 2002 at a Temple hospital. He was 83.
Funeral services were held Monday at Calvary Baptist Church in Killeen with Pastor Travis Sullivan officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Killeen.
Mr. Vroman was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Midland, Mich. He was reared in Michigan and was a 1938 graduate of Montrose High School in Montrose, Mich. He served in the U.S. Army from October 1944 to March 1952, serving in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant first class. He married Lucy Lorene Phillips in 1949. He worked as a salesman for a furniture store before retiring. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Killeen. He was preceded in death by a son, Stan Everett; a daughter, Betty Silva; and a brother, Lyle Fisher.
Survivors include his wife, Lucy Vroman of Killeen; three sons, Randy Vroman of Gatesville, Jim Vroman of Otisville, Mich., and Joe Everett of Killeen; six daughters, Billie Jean Schoppe of Waco, Sherrell Broam of Gatesville, Nell Shirley of Waco, Connie Jones of Gatesville, Judy Rockwood of Otisville, Mich., and Nancy Vroman of Florida; one brother, Howard Vroman of Saginaw, Mich.; 29 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Reba Spencer
Reba Spencer of Gatesville died June 27, 2002 at her residence. She was 69.
Funeral services were held Monday at Gatesville Funeral Home with the Rev. Mozelle and Randy Holtzclaw officiating. Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.
Mrs. Spencer was born Dec. 12, 1932, in the Pecan Grove community of Coryell County to the late Tom and Ora Ashby Hale. She was raised in Leon Junction and attended school in Leon Junction and Flat before graduating from Gatesville High School. She was a lifetime resident of Gatesville and surrounding communities. She was a member of the Calvary Temple Pentecostal Church of God. She was a secretary for many years at the State School for Boys and retired as a secretary from Star-Tex Propane.
Survivors include daughters, Paula Bomar of Gatesville and Robin Culp of Lorena; sons, Jackie Spencer of Mound and Tim Spencer of Georgetown; sisters, Billie Campos of Oglesby, Shelia Boyer of West and Sharon Clemons of Waco; brothers, James Hale of Belton and Lloyd Hale of Waco; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family requests memorials be made to the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
