Atwood
Joyce Atwood, 78, of Swinney Switch died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001. She was born on Feb. 13, 1923, in Stockdale and had resided in Swinney Switch since 1953. She was a homemaker. She also was a past board member of the Swinney Switch EMS, member of the fire department auxiliary and New Testament Fellowship Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn Edward Atwood Sr., and a son, Linsey Wilson Atwood.
Survivors include two daughters, Sidney Ruth (Edward) Coatney of Mathis and Jeryl Dean (Dennis) Dunn of Denver,  Colo.; three sons, Wilburn Edward (Barbara) Atwood Jr. of Bossier City, La., Leslie (Starla) Atwood of Liberty Hill and Thomas Evans Atwood of Ardmore, Okla.; two sisters, Edith  Jones and Durlene Dubose, both of San Antonio; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Dobie Funeral Home chapel in Mathis.
Burial followed in the Cenizo Hill Cemetery there.

Cantu
Alma G. Cantu, 78, a homemaker, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, in Fort Worth.
The funeral was held at 3:30 this afternoon (Wednesday) in the Greenwood Funeral Home chapel in Fort Worth.
Burial followed in Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park.
Mrs. Cantu was born Jan. 1, 1923, in Beeville.
Survivors include her husband, Polito Cantu of Fort Worth; a son, Polito Cantu of  Oklahoma; a daughter, Alma Davila of Fort Worth; five grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Flores
Louis Flores, 88, of Berclair died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, in Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville. He was born Aug. 19, 1913, in San Diego to Serapio and Tomasita (Garcia) Flores. He was a retired rancher and was a member of the Catholic church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Louis Ray Flores.
Survivors include his wife, Ramona Garza Flores of Berclair; two daughters, Manuela Gallegos of Austin and Becky Hernandez of Berclair; three stepdaughters, Patricia De La Rosa of Snyder, Beatrice Salazar and Josefa Hernandez, both of Beeville; two sons, Antonio Flores of Beeville and Benny Flores of Goliad; a sister, Enriqueta Cumpian of Beeville; two brothers, Genaro Flores of Beeville and Enrique Flores of Berclair; 26 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Treviño Funeral Home chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church, with the Rev. Balaswamy Pasala officiating.
Burial followed in the Berclair Cemetery. Pallbearers were Antonio Flores Jr., Joe Arredondo, Julian Hernandez Jr., Ruben Hernandez, Henry Hernandez and Steven Flores. Honorary pallbearers were Marcos Campos Jr., Domingo Campos, Miguel Campos, Johnny Cumpian and Jaime De La Rosa.

Franco
Raul Franco Sr., 73, of Bay City died Monday, April 8, 2002, in a Houston hospital.
Rosary was recited Wednesday evening at the  Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City. Funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday morning at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Fr. Edward Boren officiating. Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers were Andres Franco, Robert Thompson, Richard Cortinas Sr., Rudy Cortinas, Ernest Opella and Alfred Franco. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Ortiz and Richard Cortinas Jr.
Mr. Cortinas was born Nov. 13, 1928, in Mathis to Rafael and Adelia (Garza) Franco. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City and had resided there since 1963. He was the owner and operator of Franco’s Restaurant.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Zepeda Franco of Bay City; his daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Ruben Solis of Richwood, Ruth and Travis Littlefield, Becky and Manuel Ortiz and Ruby and Elias Sanchez, all of Bay City, Sylvia and Gary Bartley of Brazoria and Marty and Jose DeCarlos of Houston; a sister, Adelia Roman of Corpus Christi; his brothers, Andres Franco of Houston and Rafael Franco of Muleshoe; grandchildren, Michael Ortiz of Bay City, Felicia Solis of Houston, Richard Cortinas Jr. of Bay City, Jason Reams of Dallas, Jonathan Rodgers, E.J. and John Sanchez, all of Bay City; a great-grandson, Jordan Cantu of Sugar Land, and numerous other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Raul Franco Jr., and by nine brothers and sisters.
Arrangements were by  Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Haynie
Bette F. Haynie, 69, of Houston and Bastrop died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Austin.
Funeral services were held April 6 at Calvary Episcopal Church in Bastrop. A memorial service was held at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston on Tuesday. A private family burial followed.
Mrs. Haynie was born Sept. 4, 1932, in Three Rivers to J.E. and Maxine (Linville) Hutchins. She was preceded in death by her father and stepfather, Paul Flossel.
She is survived by her mother, Maxine Flossel; a sister, Tomi Clyde Rayburn; mother-in-law, Sue Gibson; four children, David Powell Haynie and wife Amy of Highland Village, Dallas, Amy Haynie Phelan and husband Herb of New Orleans, Sue Cummings Haynie and Garner Powell Haynie; and two grandsons, Samuel Powell Haynie and Benjamin Powell Haynie.
In 1945, she moved to Beeville with her mother and stepfather. She graduated from A.C.  Jones High School and attended Drawn Business School in San Antonio, after which she worked for Stanolind Oil Company in Houston as a secretary. On March 10, 1956, she married Dr. Thomas P. Haynie III of Houston, who survives her also.
She was a founding member of St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church in Nassau Bay and was a member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston since 1981. In 1999, she became an associate member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Bastrop.
She had been a member of the Bluebird Circle in Houston since 1982 and served as president from 1997-1998, chairman of the Clinic Committee for the Pediatric Neurology Clinic at  Texas Children’s Hospital from 2000-2001 and was currently chairperson of the advisory committee of the Bluebird Circle. She was also a member of the Spouses Organizations of UT’s M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Memorials may be sent to either The Bluebird Circle, 615 W. Alabama, Houston,  Texas 77006 or to the Heart Hospital of Austin, 3801 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin,  Texas 78756.

Lawson
Barbara H. Lawson, 63, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, in Corpus Christi’s Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
Visitation will be held Sunday at Galloway and Sons Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Beeville.
She was born Jan. 28, 1939, to Grace and Luby Harrell in Beeville. She graduated from Pettus High School. She married Jay F. Lawson on April 9, 1960, in the Tuleta Presbyterian Church.
She was office manager of Lawson Water Well in Tuleta. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Beeville, Wednesday Luncheon Club, May Dirks Garden Club, Orangedale Hobby Club, Rialto Preservation Society board of directors, Rosetta Club and past member of the Bee Development Authority board of directors.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Allen and James.
She is survived by her husband, Jay Lawson, her son, J. Scott Lawson, and brother, Robert Harrell.
Memorial donations may be made to the Presbyterian Church building fund.

Pierce
Bonnie Pierce, 81, of Horseshoe Lake Residential Community in Huntsville died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Friday at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel in Huntsville. Burial followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery there.
Mrs. Pierce was born June 1, 1920, to Fred and Bama Duett. Both her parents preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Danny Pierce of Huntsville; three daughters, Wanda Solesky and Pat Hubbard, both of Huntsville, and Elgene Pierce Barrington of Beeville; and one brother, Fred Duett Jr. of Meridian, Miss.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Van E. Pierce, in 2000, and a son, Michael.
Arrangements were handled by Forest Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery.

Rocha
Ernesto Rocha, 69, resident of the Flour Bluff community and formerly of Beeville, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, surrounded by his family and friends after a battle with cancer.
He was the first born of Toribio and Sofia Rocha of Beeville.
Mr. Rocha was a civil service employee for Corpus Christi Army Depot, NAS Corpus Christi, until his retirement on April 1, 1993. He was a parent volunteer, past treasurer for the Flour Bluff High School Choir Booster Club and recently was a Diversity Committee member for the Flour Bluff Independent School District.
He is survived by his wife, Rose L. Rocha, their children and grandchildren respectively: Diana R. Peña, Ernesto “Sonny” Rocha Jr. and Marco Hernandez; Osbaldo “O.C.”, John D. and Rachel L. Cantu, all of Corpus Christi. Other survivors are his father, Toribio Rocha, and son, Phillip Rocha, both of Beeville, and sisters, Antonia R. (Desiderio “Cheo”) Perez of Beeville, and Aira R. (Linus T.) Sanchez of Abilene, Kan. Other survivors include a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Visitation was held Friday morning at Seaside Funeral Home in Corpus Christi, with a rosary to be recited at 7 o’clock that evening in the Seaside Chapel. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday (today) at St. Cyril & Methodius Church. Interment will follow with military honors at Seaside Memorial Park.

Taylor
J.B.  Taylor Jr, 69, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002.
Visitation was held Thursday at Galloway and Sons Funeral Chapel. Rosary was recited Thursday evening at that same location. Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Patrick Donohoe officiating. Burial followed in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Schneider, J.C. Barrera, Benny Bridge, Gary Knobles, Clem Kaspryzk and Jeff Boeck. Honorary pallbearers were Ellis Parker, Teryn Muench, Freddy Schauer, Hector Garcia and Joebob Boeck.
Organist was Mary Ellen Thoms, with special music by Ray Barefield.
Mr.  Taylor was born in Beeville to James B. and Mattie (Scott)  Taylor on Aug. 23, 1932. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Claudia Dolan on Aug. 4, 1995, in Alice. He retired from Southwestern Bell after 26 years of employment, and was currently self-employed as a custom farmer. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia Dolan  Taylor of Beeville; two daughters, Carol Meador and husband Charlie of Kaufmann and Patricia Kay Henning of Refugio; a stepdaughter, Vicki  White of Portland; three sons, John Scott  Taylor and wife Charlene of Kenedy and David Clinton  Taylor and wife Debbie and Kenneth Wayne  Taylor and wife Denise, all of Beeville; one sister, Joyce Collier of Tuleta; 10 grandchildren, Ken  Taylor II, Sheelah Taylor, Buster Henning, Myles Taylor, Courtney Taylor,  Taylor Henning, Drema Kay Henning, Melissa Meador, Charlie Meador and Blake Meador; and three step-grandchildren, Kreg, Kyle and Kristi Lynn  White.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Kay Taylor.

Yarbro
Mary Louise Yarbro, 83, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in George West’s Live Oak Nursing Center.
Visitation was held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral chapel in Three Rivers. Funeral services were held Saturday (today) at the same location, with Rev. John Alsbrooks officiating. Burial followed at Three Rivers Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Goebel, Jeffrey Goebel, Hilbert Kopplin, Don Moore, Dr. Lynn Bluhm and Ruben Guerra. Special music included “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace.”
Mrs. Yarbro was born in Thorton on April 11, 1918, to Rudolph Giles and Delia (Richards) Bell. She married Joe H. Yarbro Jr. in Alamo on Jan. 2, 1938. She had resided in Live Oak County since 1924. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Oakville Methodist Circle and Beefmaster Cow Belles.
Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 2001.
She is survived by three sisters, B. Vance and Garnet Resch, both of Corpus Christi, and Jeanette Bryan of Houston; one aunt, Flo Teague of Waco; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
