MARY ARMENTA "MOLLIE" LEWIS STOKES

Mary Armenta “Mollie” Lewis Stokes, 89, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and inspirational friend to many, passed away peacefully on the 17th day of March, 2003, at Garden Terrace, in Houston,  Texas.

Mrs. Stokes was a resident of West Columbia,  Texas from 1955 to 2000. She moved to Houston in 2000, to be by her family.

Mollie was born on April 28, 1913, in Chinquapin,  Texas. Her father, George A Lewis, was born in 1868 and Mother, Laura Henretta Loggins Lewis, was born in 1875. Mollie had eight brothers and two sisters. She was a 4th generation Texan, and was particularly proud of being a descendant of Pocahontas and Jim Bowie.

On May 12, 1937, she married the love of her life, Clyde Alston Stokes. The couple had one son, Robert C. Stokes. The couple lived in California and Nevada from 1937 to 1952, until they moved back home to Chinquapin,  Texas. After the death of her husband, she moved to West Columbia,  Texas to live next to her sister, Lillian Ealy, whom Mollie loved dearly.

Mollie graduated from Stephen F. Austin University and taught the third (3rd) grade in West Columbia,  Texas, from 1955 through 1974. She was very proud of teaching and loved every one of her students. To love and to be loved by her students was one of her greatest joys. After she retired, she became the Worlds Best Grandmother. Her grandchildren affectionately called her “Grandnu.”

Mollie loved nature. She appreciated all of God’s creations. The birds, beautiful flowers and especially the “old pecan tree” at the old home place. Mollie never complained and was always cheerful. She always had something humorous to say and a joke to tell. She had a smile, hug and words of encouragement for all. Her loving spirit continued to be her gift to everyone she met, until the very end.

Mrs. Stokes was preceded in death by her husband, in 1955.

She is survived by her sister, Lillian Ealy of Tomball; her son, Robert C. Stokes and daughter-in-law, Donna Faust Stokes of Houston; granddaughter, Jennifer Anne Stokes Young and her husband, Jerry McFadden Young of Houston; grandson, Robert C. Stokes, Jr. of San Francisco, California; her great-grandchildren, Victoria Anne Young and Grace McFadden Young of Houston; and her namesake niece, Molly Frances Lovett of Tomball.

The essence of her life was found in her Bible. It reflected her favorite Bible verse, II Timothy 4:7, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

Her favorite poem was “Should You Go First” by Albert Kennedy Roswell. In her life story that she never completed, she wrote, “without our past, we would not have our present, and there would be no future.”

The family wishes to express its sincere thanks to Wilma Tielke, Rosemary Sanchez, Yolanda Martinez, Evelyn Freund, and all of the staff at Garden Terrace in Houston,  Texas, for the love and care given to Mollie over the final ten years of her life.

Those wishing to pay their last respects to Mrs. Stokes, and visit with the family, may do so from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 20, 2003, at the Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine,  Texas.
