ROY LEE STOWERS

Roy Lee Stowers, 54, of Clute,  Texas passed away March 28, 2003. He was born in Belleville, Illinois on September 20, 1948 to Eddie and Reba Stowers. He was a computer programmer for Brazosport College for 11 years. He is survived by his son Robert Stowers of Lake Jackson,  Texas, daughter Mary Stowers of Clute,  Texas, and two sisters, Patricia Stowers of Marion, Arkansas, and Penny Dowling of Memphis, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents Eddie and Reba Stowers, and one brother. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements by Freeport-Lakewood Funeral Homes.

VALLYE EURA TOMBAUGH WOODYARD WHITE

Vallye Eura Tombaugh Woodyard  White, “Gan-mama,” 101, passed away March 28, 2003. Born February 23, 1902 in Lampasas, TX. She married G.L. Woodyard in 1922 and C.V.  White in 1952. Vallye was a wonderful mother to her four sons; Kelly, Jack, Leslie and Vernon. She had 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Vallye was preceded in death by her husband, sister and two brothers. She was a lifelong Christian, very active in her church, an avid gardener, a master cook, a gracious hostess, a great fisherwoman, and she loved sewing and crafts. She will be missed, and we thank God for the time He shared her with us. Visitation will be Monday, March 31, 2003 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a funeral service Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at 11 a.m., both at SouthPark Funeral Home. A pastor from the First Assembly of God in Brazoria will officiate the service. Burial will follow in SouthPark Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Assembly of God in Brazoria. SouthPark Funeral Home, 1310 N. Main St., Pearland, TX 77581.

JOHNIE BRYAN BAILEY

Johnie Bryan Bailey, 89, of McDade (formerly of Sweeny) passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003 at his residence. Services are pending with Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia.

BUCK BUREN BROADWAY

Buck Buren Broadway of Brazoria passed away Sunday, March 30, 2003 in Clute. Services are pending with Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

Clara Carlton of Clute passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003 at Angleton-Danbury Hospital. Services are pending with Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

JOHNIE BRYAN "J.B" BAILEY

Johnie Bryan, “Grandpaw” Bailey, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003, in McDade,  Texas, at “The Farm,” The place he loved to be.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at the First Baptist Church in Sweeny,  Texas, with the Rev. Jerl Watkins, Rev. Geary McManus, and Dr. Skip Bassham officiating.

Burial will follow in Sweeny Cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Bakers Funeral Home in West Columbia,  Texas.

Bryan was born July 8, 1913, in Dublin, Erath County,  Texas, the 4th of seven children to Jonah Erwin Bailey of Lewis County, Tennessee, and Josie Ann Rinehart Bailey, of Cherokee County, Alabama.

He attended school in Spur and Steel Hill,  Texas, where he loved to play basketball. In his youth, he traveled much of the Panhandle of  Texas working, when not in school.

In 1929, he came to Sweeny,  Texas and attended Sweeny School. This is where he met Opal Redding. They were married August 1, 1933, in East Bernard,  Texas and had been married 63 years at the time of her death, March 15, 1997.

May 2, 1944, he entered World War II and served until November 11, 1945, as part of the 34th Division, 133rd Infantry, Red Bull Division. He participated in the European Theater, Italian Campaign. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 8551 in Sweeny.

After the war, he came home to go into concrete contracting and was active in that business, until after his 89th birthday. He was member of the Sweeny Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years. During that time, he served as Fire Marshall and a Captain. From 1947 to 1948, he served on the Sweeny City Council. He taught boys in Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Sweeny and was ordained a Deacon of that church in 1967. At the time of his death, he was a member and Deacon of Knobb Springs Baptist Church, McDade,  Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his son and daughter-in-law, J.C. & Helen Bailey of Sweeny; daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Berta & Donnie Flickinger of Sweeny, Beverly & Allen McNiel of Ashwood and Brenda & Dr. Charles “Skip” Bassham of Nashville, Arkansas; ten grandchildren, Jonah and Marc Bailey, Donna Gregurek and Kelly Rayburn of Sweeny, Bryan McNiel and Lorie McNiel of Houston, Melissa DeWalt of Big Sandy, Brent Bassham of Tyler, Vanessa Wise of Houston and Josie Howe of Wurzburg, Germany; eleven great-grandchildren, Adrienne, Sara and Justin of Sweeny, Matt Gregurek of San Antonio; Chris and Jayson Gregurek, McCall and Jake Rayburn of Sweeny, Bailey and James DeWalt of Big Sandy and Chandell Howe of Wurzburg, Germany; a stepdaughter, Fritzann  Johnson & her husband Brian and step-granddaughter, Judith and step-grandson, Jeremiah; sisters-in-law, Ponnie Bailey of Sweeny and Gladys Redding of Schulenburg; brothers and sisters-in-law, Durward and Helen Emery of McDade, Fritz and Gail Wilke, Dean and Margaret Wilke, Robert and Charlotte Martin and Ethelyn Kingston of West Columbia; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harvey Lee “Slim,” Jesse Ervin, Paul Weldon, Rafel “R.D.,” infant brother; one sister, Mildred; and great-granddaughter, Ashlee Lauren Bailey.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons and granddaughters husbands, Jonah and Marc Bailey, Philip Gregurek, Lance Rayburn, Bryan McNiel, Brent Bassham, James DeWalt, Scott Wise and Joshua Howe.

In lieu of flowers, Grandpaw asked that donations may be made to Knobb Springs Baptist Church, Youth Department, 1662 Co. Rd. 305, McDade,  Texas, 78650 or First Baptist Church Sweeny,  Texas, Youth Department, in memory of his great-granddaughter, Ashlee Lauren Bailey.

EDITH VIOLA MILLER

Edith Viola Miller, 84, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2003, in Marlin,  Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Marlin Funeral Home in Marlin,  Texas.

Private interment will be in the Cego United Church of Christ Cemetery in Cego,  Texas.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Adams Funeral Home in Marlin,  Texas.

She was born September 15, 1918 in McGregor,  Texas.

Viola was a longtime resident of  Jones Creek until moving to Chilton in 1969. She was a member of Gulf Prairie Presbyterian Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. She was also a Cub Scout den mother.

Viola served on the Board of Directors for the Marlin Civic Center for Senior Citizens and was active with the Tomlinson Hill Old Settlers. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Erwin Anton Miller.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia & Billy Roy Watson of  Jones Creek; son and daughter-in-law, Charles E. “Bud” & Kathy Miller of Angleton; daughter & son-in-law, Elaine & Wayne Carby of Bellville; grandchildren, Edie Watson, Brett Watson, Michael Miller, Susan Addison & her husband, Chris, and Erwin Carby & wife Stephanie; five great-grandchildren; and her brother, Joe Murphy of Chilton.

DAVID O. SHEPARD

Funeral services for David O. Shepard, 85, of Los Angeles, California, formerly of Freeport,  Texas, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 3, 2003, at First Missionary Baptist Church in Freeport,  Texas, with Rev. Dr. J.V. Williams officiating.

Burial will be in the Houston National Cemetery.

He died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in Los Angeles, California.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Dixon Funeral Home Chapel in Brazoria,  Texas.

He had served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include one daughter Audrey Pinkney (Joseph) of Freeport; one brother. Rev. Andrew M. Shepard (Mabel) of Houston; two sisters, Sarah Lacy of Lake  Jackson and Minnie Alice Jammer of Houston; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Sam Ray Allen, Cornelius Williams, Robert Allen, George Williams, Jr., Michael Williams and Gary Jammer.

Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Jammer, Rev. Andrew Shepard, Joseph Pinkney, Wendell Pinkney, Milton Evans and Fred Johnson.

BUCK B. BROADWAY

Buck B. Broadway, 70, of Clute,  Texas, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2003, at his sister’s residence in Clute,  Texas.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel in Lake Jackson,  Texas, with Rev. Kerry Lucas and Rev. Ken Murray officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

military Honors will follow at Gulf Prairie Cemtery in  Jones Creek,  Texas.

Buck was a member of the First Assembly of God in  Jones Creek,  Texas, U.S. Army Veteran of Korean Conflict, past Commancer of the “Dav” Disabled American Veterans-Brazoria Branch, and worked local construction as a pipefitter/welder and member of Pipefitters Local 211.

He is survived by his three sisters, Billie Lucas of Clute, Daphone Kelley and Helen Bellard, both of Brazoria; four brothers, Hoyt Broadway, Tolly Broadway and Glenn Broadway, all of  Jones Creek, and Paul Broadway of Clute; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Buck was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac & Willie Broadway Sr., wife, Pearl Broadway; and two brothers, Isaac Broadway Jr. and Jimmy Broadway.

His various nephews will act as pallbearers.

JOE C. SPEARS

Funeral services for Joe C. Spears, 41, of Angleton,  Texas, are pending with Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria,  Texas.

He passed away Monday, March 31, 2003, at Angleton-Danbury Hospital in Angleton,  Texas.

ALICE WILLIAMS

Funeral services for Alice Williams, 60, of Houston, will be Saturday, January 25, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake with the Rev. Otis Brown officiating.

Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

She died January 15, 2003 at her residence.

She was a member of Brookhaven Baptist Church in Houston.

She is survived by her husband, Kary Williams of Houston; three stepsons, Kary Williams, Jr. (Judy) of Ohio, Gary Lyn Williams and Willie Cory Williams; three stepdaughters, Renona Williams, Margaret Williams and Bridget Williams, all of Houston; three brothers, Richard  Jones (JoAnne), Calvin  Jones and Donald Ray Jones, all of Houston; three sisters, Margie Turner, Grayson  Jones of Houston and Grace Hollis of Galveston; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Lavaughn Williams, Johnathan Walker, David Wiley, Artis Anderson, Solomon Bess and DeWayne Turner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Jones, Calvin  Jones and Donald Ray Jones.

Visitation will be Friday, January 24, 2003 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. at the Dixon Funeral Home Chapel and a Wake on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Brookhaven Baptist Church, 1101 Theresa, Houston,  Texas.

Arrangements are by Dixon Funeral Home of Brazoria.

ORTH LEE WILEY

Funeral services for Orth Lee Wiley, 79, of Danciger will be Saturday, January 25, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary A.M.E. Church in Danciger with the Rev. Eddie Reed, Jr., officiating.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Danciger.

She died January 15, 2003 at her residence.

She was a member of St. Mary A.M.E. Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one daughter, Alnetia Jackson.

She is survived by one brother, Lonzo Davis of Pledger; three sisters, Lillie James (Freddie, Sr.), Dorothy  Jones and Betty Evans (James), all of Danciger; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be James Evans, Willie James, Freddie James, Jr., Milton Bryant, Joseph Patterson, Robert Patterson, Dennis Davis and Elijah James.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lonzo Davis, Benford Davis, Freddie James, Sr., Robert  Jackson and Jerome Gillis.

Visitation will be Friday, January 24, 2003 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Dixon Funeral Home Chapel in Brazoria.
