Beverly June Bauman

Beverly June Bauman of Copperas Cove died April 3, 2003 in Austin. She was 74.
Funeral services were held Monday at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home Chapel in Copperas Cove with the Rev. Mary Currie officiating. Burial was Tuesday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
She was born Nov. 8, 1928, in Cameron, MO, and was raised and educated in St. Joseph, MO. On May 18, 1946, she married George Dodd Bauman, in Troy, KS. He preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1990. She was a homemaker and an Army wife. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Unit 8577, a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of The Retired Sergeants Majors and Chiefs Association and the Four Winds Intertribal Society. She had lived in Copperas Cove since 1972. She was of the Catholic faith. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale Stephens and Wayne Stephens.
Survivors include two sons, George Eugene Bauman of Copperas Cove and Richard Riley Bauman of Sealy; three daughters, Kathy Duncan of Gatesville and Debby June Weaver and Ellen Elaine Pearcy, both of Copperas Cove; two sisters, Donna Perry and Joyce Rivers, both of St. Joseph, MO; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be made to the Christopher House/Hospice of Austin, 2820 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Austin, TX

Rufus M. Holder Jr.

Rufus M. Holder Jr. of Carthage died April 25, 2003 in Longview. He was 81.
Graveside services were held Monday at Highland Cemetery in DePort with the Rev. Bruce Will officiating.
Mr. Holder was born July 16, 1921, in Turnersville to the late Rufus Marion and Lula Hannah Basham Holder. He married Claudine Ashford and they resided in Temple from 1951 until 1988 when they moved to Carthage. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for the Burroughs Corporation (now Unisys Corporation), retiring in 1981. He was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Claudine Holder of Carthage; three daughters, Janet Clark of Carthage, Diane Oliver of Temple and Kathy Hitchman of Morgan’s Point; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were Steven Clark, Matt Hitchman, Kyle Maxwell, Mike Ashford, Josh Ashford, Jordan Ashford, Bob Hudman, Austin Maxwell, Todd Hudman and Marshal Clinard.
The family requests memorials be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association of  Texas, P.O. Box 26460, Austin, TX 78755-0460.

Jason Briggs

Jason Briggs, 18, of Gatesville, died April 22, 2003 in a Temple hospital.
Memorial services were held Saturday at Scott’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Kurt Fuessel officiating.
He was born April 15, 1985, in Tucson, AZ. He was reared and attended school in Tucson before moving to Gatesville in 1996 where he also attended school. He was a former employee of Dyer’s Restaurant in Gatesville.
Survivors include his father, Robert Briggs of Gatesville; mother and stepfather, Vicki and Tony Bagwell of Gatesville; grandparents, Bob and Connie Tennison of Tucson, AZ; grandfather, William Briggs of Phoenix, AZ; step-grandmother, Nita Bagwell of Gatesville; and sisters, Jessica Briggs of Gatesville and Christina Poole and Rebecca Briggs, both of Phoenix, AZ.

The family requests that memorials be given to the M.A.D.D. organization.

La’Rece Estes

La’Rece Estes, age 65, passed away at her Diana residence Saturday afternoon, April 26, 2003. She was born in Motley County on July 1, 1937, to the late Emmitt and Thelma Cooper Lawrence.
She was a homemaker and a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, who will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include: husband, Richard Dale Estes; daughters, Margie Bellomy and husband Charles, and Tammy Van Horn and husband Monty of Gatesville; sons, Richard and Robert Estes; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; stepmother, Billie Ruth Lawrence; brother, Rickey Lawrence; sister, Kathy Lawrence; and a host of other special relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday in the chapel of Lakeview Funeral Home with G.A. Stanfield and Rickey Lawrence officiating.

Interment was in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Nelda Kelly

Nelda Kelly of McGregor died May 5, 2003 at a McGregor nursing home.
Graveside services were held Wednesday at Gatesville City Cemetery with the Rev. Angelo Bertini officiating.
Mrs. Kelly was born in McGregor, daughter of the late William and Addie (Moore) Cross. She attended public schools in McGregor and continued her education at North  Texas in Denton, where she received her B.S. degree. She married W. Carroll Kelly on Dec. 28, 1939, in Denton. He preceded her in death on Feb. 4. 1964. She was a member of St. Eugene Catholic Church.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Pete Giebler

Ervin “Pete” Giebler of Crawford died May 3, 2003 at his residence. He was 79.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Beers officiating. Interment was in St. Paul Memorial Park.
Mr. Giebler was born April 5, 1924, in Coryell City, the son of the late Charlie Michael and Ella (Meyer) Giebler. He was reared in Coryell City and graduated in 1942 from Gatesville High School, where he played basketball and ran track. Following high school, he attended business college in Waco. For many years, he was a member of the community baseball team. A lifelong Lutheran, he was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he previously served on the church council. On March 18, 1947, he married Laura Bertie Meadors in Valley Mills. In 1956, they moved to the Crawford/Ocee area where he was a farmer and rancher. He also worked as a carpenter for 41 years for Wiethorn Construction, retiring in 1986.
Survivors include his wife Laura Bertie Giebler; son, Johnny Giebler of Troy; daughter, Shirley Cuff of Crawford; sister, Gladys Wiethorn of Waco; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Brian Brookshire, Clarence Fields, Jerry Dean Giebler, Gus Krueger, Brent Meyer, Jerry Meyer, Stanley Meyer and Jim Wiethorn.
Honorary pallbearers were Patrick Cuff, Michael Ferguson and James Richter.
For those desiring, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Paul Memorial Park, P.O. Box 3223, Crawford, TX 76638; or the American Cancer Society, 1311 North New Road, Waco, TX 76710.

Jack E. Browning

Jack E. Browning of Belton died May 4, 2003 at his residence. He was 76.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Heights Baptist Church in Temple with the Rev. Tom Henderson officiating. Burial was in North Belton Cemetery.
Mr. Browning was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Leon Junction, the son of the late Tom Browning and Lou Williams Browning. On Aug. 3, 1948, he married Minnie Baggerly in Belton. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years and received numerous medals. During his time in the military, he served as a mess sergeant and in the military police with the 4th Infantry Division. His tours of duty included Europe, Germany and Korea. He retired from the Army in 1966. He also worked for Griggs Equipment, was a Belton police officer and owned and operated Hill Top Cafe. He also worked for Ralph Wilson Plastics for 15 years before retiring in 1983. He was a volunteer for the Belton Chamber of Commerce, a Little League coach, a charter paramedic for the Belton Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie Browning; a son, Dennis Browning of Belton; two daughters, Jackie Graves of Temple and Debbie Martin of Belton; two brothers, Jess Browning of Gatesville and Dick Browning of California; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be made to the Senior Adult Ministry of Heights Baptist Church.

Ruth E. Peevey

Ruth E. (Schmid) Peevey, of Robinson, died May 8, 2003 at the age of 83.
Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Angelo Bertini officiating. Burial was in Robinson Cemetery.
Mrs. Peevey was born March 17, 1919, in the Durango community of Falls County to the late Ernest and Joan Schmid. She married Jake Peevey in 1936, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 2001. She was also preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Survivors include five children, Robert Peevey of Lorena, Pat Blackwell of Robinson, Richard Peevey of Bryan, Sally Koester of Gatesville and Douglas Peevey of Gatesville; a sister, Ruby Lee Prather of McKinney; four brothers, Robert Schmid of Commerce, Eugene Schmid of Princeton, Clarence Schmid of Lucas and Cecil Schmid of Princeton; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Derek Peevey, Michael Kusler, Kelly Wade Kusler, Christopher Peevey, Brian Peevey and Scott Pinkston. Honorary pallbearers were Keith Wayne Kusler and Jeff Peevey.

Clois D. Stone

Clois D. Stone of Gatesville died May 12, 2003 at a Waco hospital. He was 91.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Restland Cemetery with the Rev. Johnny Miller officiating. Memorial services will follow the graveside service at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Stone was born Sept. 17, 1911, in the Blevins community of Falls County near Eddy. He was the son of the late Charley D. and Lella May Bowers Stone. He was raised and attended schools in the Blevins and Eddy communities, graduating from Bruceville-Eddy High School. He married Edith Peters on Sept. 19, 1942, in Belton. He was an executive director for ASCS (now the FSA) in Falls, Galveston, Bastrop, Bell and Coryell counties for 44 years, retiring in January 1979. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the Gatesville Lions Club, a former member of the Coryell County Chamber of Commerce and the Gatesville Riding Club. He was a former director of the Coryell Museum and Historical Center. He was once awarded the “championship hog caller’s award” for Central  Texas. He was also a member of the Draft Horse and Mule Association and the Early Day Tractor and Engine Association in Temple. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles A. Stone of Fredericksburg; and a sister, Geneva Stone Marshall of Kingsville.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Stone of Gatesville; son, Dr. Paul Stone of St. Paul, MN; and sisters, Edna Stone Hayman of Houston and Lena Stone Criswell of Albuquerque, NM.

The family requests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Coryell Museum and Historical Center.

Dorothy Elizabeth Smith

Dorothy Elizabeth Smith, 90, mother of Anne Byrom of Gatesville, passed away at her home in McAllen, TX, on May 6, 2003.
She was born in Dallas, TX, to Robert Lee and Annie Carnes. Dorothy met her husband, Charles Lister Smith of Brookhaven, Mississippi, at a church function at Cliff Temple Baptist Church where they were members. They spent the next 25 years moving with Charles’ work in the USDA Screw Worm Eradication Program before settling in McAllen in 1962. She retired from the financial aid department of Pan American University in 1973. Charles preceded her in death in 1975. After his death, Dorothy toured Hawaii, Ireland, and England, and traveled with her daughters and grandchildren to various U.S. cities.
Dorothy was a 40-year member of the Calvary Baptist Church in McAllen. She enjoyed her friends in The Busy Bees, playing the organ, solving crossword puzzles, cooking and sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother, Ralph.
Besides her daughter Anne, Dorothy is survived by daughter, Martha Jane Coffman and husband Jan of Harlingen; grandchildren, Wendell Byrom and wife Becky of Gatesville, Keane Byrom and wife Elizabeth of Arlington, Melanie Coffman of San Benito, Anthony Coffman of Houston and Shelby Coffman and wife Roxanne of Harlingen; and great-grandchildren, Krista and Kael Byrom of Gatesville and Lauriebeth Byrom of Arlington.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2003, at Virgil Wilson Memorial Chapel in McAllen with the Rev. Ellis Orozco of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery.
