ROMAN TRAEYE, JR.

Funeral services for Roman Traeye, Jr., 75, of Freeport will be Saturday, January 25, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at Agape Fellowship Church in Freeport with the Rev. Hannis Prince, Jr. officiating.

He died January 16, 2003 at Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson.

He is survived by his wife, Leila Traeye of Houston; two sons, Anthony Traeye of Woodville,  Texas, Roman Traeye III of New Boston,  Texas; special sister, Earnestine Boozy of Freeport; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Vincent James, Melvin  White, Howard Smith, Orlando Alston, J.B. Robinson, and Timothy Hill.

Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of Agape Fellowship Church.

Visitation will be Friday, January 24, 2003 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Dixon Funeral Home Chapel.

Arrangements are by Dixon Funeral Home of Brazoria.

JEAN CHRISTINE HUGHES

Jean Christine Hughes, 52, of  Jones Creek passed away on Monday, January 20, 2003 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 24, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Stroud Funeral Home.

Visitation will be on Thursday, January 23, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stroud Funeral Home.

Interment will be at Gulf Prairie Cemetery in  Jones Creek.

She was preceded in death by parents, Clarence and Charlotte Frazier; son, Curtis Free III; grandson, August Allen Kurcher, Jr.

She is survived by husband, Mickey Hughes of  Jones Creek; daughter, Jennie Huddleston of Mineral Wells; sons, Anthony Franco and wife, Ronda Mickey Lynn Hughes, II, all of  Jones Creek; sisters, Angela Stillman and husband, John of Fayetteville, Tennessee, Lisa Wigheraman and husband, Buddy of Pilot Point; brothers, Marshal Morris and wife, Kristine of Plano, Timothy Morris of Bellbuckle, Tennessee, David Frazier and Daniel Frazier both of Clute; grandchildren, Patricia and Logan Blackstock, Britni Gibson, Christa and Rebecca Franco, Cory Watson; many other loving relatives and friends.

Arrangements by Stroud Funeral Home of Clute, 979-265-1188.

SARA "FRANCES" LEWIS

Sara “Frances” Lewis, 81, was born May 2, 1921 in Bay City,  Texas. She died on January 18, 2003. She left behind a husband of 61 years, Walter Lewis, Sr.; sons, Walter and wife Faye of Clute, Bob and wife Dee of Tennessee; daughter, Janice McMurtrey of Houston, Denise  Jones and husband, Kevin of Lake Jackson; son, James and Beckie of  Pennsylvania; sister Doris Fowler of Alaska; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, January 25, between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Freeport Library. For information call Lakewood Funeral Home at 297-6464.

CHARLIE ANDREWS

Graveside services for Charlie Andrews, 82, of Angleton, will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 24, 2003 at Angleton Cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family before the service on Friday at Palms Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Charlie was born on November 25, 1921 in North Zulch to James & Lola McClain Andrus. He served in the United States Army. Charlie passed away at his residence on Sunday, January 19, 2003.

His parents; one sister; and one brother preceded him in death.

He is survived by wife, Linda Goolsby Andrews; sons, Gary Andrews of Arlington and David Andrews & wife, Valerie of Tucson, Arizona; daughters, Beverly Blackwell & husband, Everett of Angleton, Karen Cearley & husband, B.J. of Moody, Brenda Brown of Angleton, Debbie Peters of Arlington, Laura McGee of Arlington and Candance Morrison & husband, John of Arlington; brother, James Andrus & wife, Lee of Freeport; sisters, Ruby Casey of North Zulch and Freddie Moore of Carless; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements by Palms Funeral Home.

SUSIE BERNICE BRANCH

Funeral services for Susie Bernice Branch, 50, of West Columbia will be Saturday, January 25, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church, 522 W. Live Oak, Angleton, with the Rev. M.D. Guidry, officiating.

Burial will be in Peaceful Rest Cemetery in Brazoria.

She died January 17, 2003 at Sweeny Community Hospital.

She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church and employed by Dow Cafeteria (Aramark).

She was preceded in death by her father, Jasper King; one brother, Emmitt Dorsey Ward; and one aunt, Dollie Thomas.

She is survived by her mother, Cherrie Mae Ward of Angleton; three sons, Jamaal Branch of Angleton, Jasper Walker and Archie Branch, III of West Columbia; four brothers, James Ward, Jr., Vincent Ward (Gloria), Harold Ward (Sharon) and Andrew Ward, all of Angleton; five sisters, Jessica King, Jenefer Butler, Frankie Ward, Rosie Ward, all of Angleton, Debora Duplechain (Edward) of Sugar Land; two grandchildren; four aunts; two uncles; and host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Jamaal Branch, Jasper Walker, James Walker, Rashad Anderson, Ray Williams and Kevin Foster.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Ward, Jr., Harold Ward, Vincent Ward, Charlie Davis, Roy B. Willis, Sr., Edward Duplechain, Ronnie Hall, Roy Branch, Gerry Addison, Archie Branch III and Arthur Thomas.

Visitation will be Friday, January 24, 2003 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Dixon Funeral Home Chapel and a Wake on Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church in Angleton.

Arrangements are by Dixon Funeral Home of Brazoria.

HERSHEL HERRING

Hershel Herring, 79, of Lake Jackson, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at Newton,  Texas. Funeral service are pending with Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

CHARLES EDWARDS SMITH

Mr. Charles Edwards Smith passed away January 15, 2003. Funeral services are pending with  Johnson Funeral Home, Houston,  Texas.

CLOYCE MYRLE PARSONS HOLLIDA

Cloyce Myrle Parsons Hollida went to be with the Lord on January 20, 2003. She was born in Paris,  Texas, on July 20, 1914. She is survived by her husband, Ray Hollida of Clute. The Hollidas, married in 1933, were long-time valley residents arriving in the Combes area in 1920s. They were both active in business, church, schools, and civic organizations for many years.

Cloyce served First Baptist Church of Combes as a Sunday School teacher, Training Union director, Baptist Women’s president and director as well as Associational Women’s Missionary Union president. She served as Parent-Teacher Association president of Dishman School several times. Dishman School presented a  Texas P.T.A. Life Membership to her after 21 years of service. She was also active in Gay Junior High P.T.A. and Harlingen High School Parent-Student-Teacher Association as well as Harlingen City Council P.T.A.

She will be greatly missed by her two sons, Clarence Ray Hollida of Leakey and Sam Hollida of Seguin; and her daughter, Nita Ganstine of Lake Jackson. Also six grandchildren, Raymond Hollida, Russ Hollida, Dennis Ganstine, Jr., Denice Bass, Gregory Ganstine and Carrie Hollida; as well as five great-grandchildren.

Cloyce is the last of her immediate family, preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be from noon until 9:00 p.m., Friday, January 24, 2003 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2003, at Combes First Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rio Grande Children’s Home, 3780 N. Bentson Palm Dr., Mission, TX. 78574 or First Baptist Church of Combes.

ELIAZAR BARRERA LONGORIA, JR.

Eliazar Barrera Longoria, Jr., 25, of Holiday Lakes passed away January 22, 2003. Eliazar was a lifetime area resident and worked for Walmart. He was in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

He is survived by his father, Eliazar B. Longoria, Sr. of Angleton; three sisters, Dionicia Heileman of Lake City, Evie Longoria of Angleton, Ilda Longoria of Bay City; step-brother, Gilbert Longoria of Freeport; five step-sisters and two step brothers.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Penne Longoria in 1998.

Memorial services will be at a later date.

FRANCES BARTON COLVIN

Memorial services for Frances Barton Colvin will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Jackson.

HERSHEL HERRING

Hershel Herring passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2003 after a brief illness. Mr. Herring was born in Mira,  Louisiana on October 18, 1923 to Will and Elizabeth Herring.

As a member of the elite Marine Raiders during WWII, Mr. Herring saw battle in the South Pacific and fought valiantly on the infamous Iwo Jima. The Herring family moved to Lake  Jackson in the early 1950’s when Hershel went to work for Dow Chemical. He retired after working for many years in the Caustic Department and later in the Marine Department. Mr. Herring coached during the 1960’s and the 1970’s with the Lake  Jackson Girls’ Softball Association. He also was a newspaper distributor for The Facts during this time period touching the lives of many young people. He was admired for his patience, fairness, honesty, and his ability to relate to people of all ages.

After retirement, Mr. Herring enjoyed camping and fishing. He could fish from daylight till dark — so caught up in the moment that he would often forget to eat. Crappie in Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend can rest better now; there is none less determined fisherman after them.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Elosie; his parents; his son, Steve; two sisters; one brother; and two granddaughters.

He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Dampf and husband, Greg of Jasper, Donna Hornback and husband, George of Lake Jackson; six grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two sisters, Jean Grenkevich and husband, Richard, Dot Crowley and husband, Bill; two brothers, Charles Herring and wife, Corinne, Robert Herring and wife, Louise; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be held for Hershel Herring at Lakewood Funeral Chapel in Lake Jackson,  Texas on Saturday, January 25, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be Friday, January 24, 2003 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Arrangements by Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

LILLIE LEE SHAW

Lillie Lee Shaw, 82, of West Columbia passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2003 in Bay City.

She was born on Tuesday, April 6, 1920 in Gore,  Oklahoma. She was a life long resident and a member of Church of Christ in West Columbia.

Services are scheduled for Saturday, January 25, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home Chapel in West Columbia with nephew, William Edwards officiating.

Visitation will be Friday, January 24, 2003 between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia.

Burial will be at Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest in West Columbia.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Joe & Dianne Shaw of Goliad, Earl L. “Boogie” & Norma Shaw of West Columbia; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Ann & Clinton Long of Wharton, Judy Gail & Greg Goodwin of Justin; brother and sister-in-law James & Ruth Edwards of Huntsville; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jared Goodwin, Joshua Goodwin, Chris Martin, Casey Shaw, Chad Shaw, Clay Shaw, Shane Shaw and Shannon Shaw.

Memorial may be made in Mrs. Shaw’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Arrangements made by Baker Funeral Home, 634 S. Columbia Dr., West Columbia,  Texas.

Services for Lee Arthur Wilson Jr., 73, of Angleton are pending at Palms Funeral Home. Mr. Wilson passed away Friday, January 24, 2003 at his residence.
