MANLEY WARREN (RED) PACE

Manley Warren (Red) Pace, 81, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2003, at Kindred Hospital in Pasadena,  Texas after a brief illness. Warren was born on July 30, 1921, at Phillips Ranch in Milam County, to Dewey and Lillie Pace. He was the great grandson of William C. and Mary Franklin, one of the original founding families of Burnett County,  Texas. Warren’s great grandfather Gideon Gooden Pace served in The Civil War, Company “A”, 12th Regiment  Texas Calvary, Confederate States Army, from October 1, 1862, until the end of the war.

Warren was valedictorian of his high school class. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, where he was in the Asiatic Pacific and American Campaigns. He fought in the Battle of Guadalcanal and the retake of the Philippines. During his time in the service, his primary duty was as an airplane mechanic. He told stories of working 24 hour shifts to repair the planes and prepare them for more action. Occasionally, he would serve as a waist gunner on one of the bombers he had repaired.

Thanksgiving 2002, he traveled to visit with family and see his “old stomping grounds”. He showed us the ranch where he was born, the house that he grew up in, and the house that his family moved to while he was in the war. He reminisced about riding to grammar school on his bike, hitting a rut in the road and ending up in a fence and about where money was found buried when the city began work on a drainage ditch. While passing a movie theater in Taylor,  Texas, he remembered an unsettled parking ticket from his youth and wondered if they were still looking for him. He told how he and friends would play fast pitch softball until it was too dark to see the ball and that he would sometimes pitch 5 or 6 games a day. He continued to enjoy baseball until the end.

Warren came to Brazoria County in 1950. He was a Millwright and charter member, in good standing, of Local Union 2232 in Houston over 42 years. He worked on gas turbines for Westinghouse for 30 years. He was a member of the VFW in Freeport.

He is survived by two children: Miles W. Pace and wife Linda of Lake Jackson,  Texas, Gem Trent and husband Clayton of Round Rock,  Texas; and five grandchildren: Annette M. Musick, Michael W. Pace, Mark W. Pace, Kasey I. Trent and Jade E. Trent.

The family wishes to thank the Staff of Angleton Danbury Hospital, especially the 2nd Floor Nurses and PCIU Staff, Dr. Tschen for his care and compassion, Dr. Gold for her hopes and encouragement over the last few weeks, Dr. Kroll at the VA Hospital for the years of care, the Kindred Hospital, 3rd floor staff for taking such good care of Dad in the last weeks of his life, and finally Dr. Bradley, who made us feel Dad was the most important patient he had. We will forever be grateful.

Special thanks to Dad’s friends at The Country Cafe in Lake Jackson. Special thanks go to Tina and Pete. Your friendship, kindness and concern for Dad were more than we could have asked for. Thanks to Sue for helping to relocate Dad to his new home in 1999.
