Hazel Dean Lewis

Hazel Dean Lewis, 81, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 while residing with her daughters in Lake Jackson. She was formerly from Sun,  Louisiana. She fought the good fight without complaint and is now safely home, looking upon the face of Jesus. She was born December 12, 1921 in New Orleans,  Louisiana to Sarah Francis Haskins Dean. She was married 26 years to the love of her life, Lorenza Deloy Lewis. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Mrs. Lewis was an only child, but she wanted her children not to be alone in life. She had four daughters, seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was very devoted to her family. Her “girls” and their spouses were her “boys,” as she called them, are Dianne Fontenot and husband, Milton, of Covington,  Louisiana; Linda L. Vinas and husband, Ralph, of Lake Jackson; Gail Pitre and husband, Charlie, of Bush,  Louisiana; Deborah L. Thevenot, of Sun,  Louisiana. She also called her grandson, Shawn, whom she helped raise, her “son.” He sadly will be unable to attend her services as he is presently serving our country overseas.

She has seven grandchildren: R. Scott Vinas, and wife, Carmen of Colorado, Shawn M. Lewis of  Louisiana, Nancy Reed of  Pennsylvania, Dawn Goss of New Mexico, June Philips and Rollie M. Broadwater, Jr. of  Pennsylvania, and Lori S. Vinas of  Texas.

She has been additionally blessed with 15 great grandchildren, whom she loved greatly and whom became the joy of her life.

Mrs. Lewis put all of her daughters through school working two jobs and long hours. She loved her family and enjoyed sewing and cooking for them. She will be immensely missed by her children, their families and friends. She was always a quiet, gentle person and everyone that knew her loved her because she was such a sweet lady. She loved to travel, she loved reading her Bible daily, especially the Psalms, as she made a habit of having everyone come into her room for morning devotional time, and she enjoyed having someone come and sing Christian hymns to her.

Mrs. Lewis had many dear friends that gave her much love and joy. They are former son-in-law, Conrad Thevenot, of Liberty, Mississippi (which was her card playing ‘buddy’); Ms. Minnie Nicolet, a dear friend from her church in Richwood,  Texas, who volunteered many long hours in assisting Mrs. Lewis and her daughters with her care; and Vanda Mathis, guitarist and Ginger Crowley, singer, who spent many wonderful evenings at her bedside singing her favorite hymns to her. Mrs. Lewis was blessed having so many dear friends and, in return, they were blessed by having known this little “giant” of a lady with her loving spirit and her great, inward strength.

Pallbearers will be: Ralph J. Vinas, R. Scott Vinas, Conrad Thevenot and Robert E. Norris.

Funeral arrangements are by: E. F. Fielding Funeral Home, Inc. Covington,  Louisiana. Viewing for friends will be Monday February 3, 2003 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, February 4, 2003, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, at noon, in the Chapel of the E. F. Fielding with Dr. Raymond Cox, a friend, from Pearland,  Texas, officiating.

Internment will be at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Covington,  Louisiana.

In lieu of flowers, and because of her great love for the Bible and for children, she requests that donations be made to The Christian’s Children’s Fund or The Gideon’s International.
