WILLIAM HORACE KOENNING

Our dear beloved husband and father, William Horace Koenning, 85, of Clute, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ and other family and friends on September 16, 2003.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2003 at Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

William’s life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2003 at Lakewood Chapel with Pastor Terry Backen and the Reverend David  Taylor officiating.

Interment will follow at Restwood Memorial Park.

William was born on January 16, 1918 to William and Mary Davis Koenning of Ganado,  Texas. Known to his family as Horace, and to some of his co-workers as WH or William.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Jane Lander Koenning; ten children, Judy Dierks of Sweeny, Gerald Koenning & wife, Pam, of Clute, Jane Kepple & husband, Don, of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Joy Moreno of Four Forks, Jeanette Risner & husband, Joe, of Lake Jackson, Bobby Koenning of Clute, Billy Koenning of Clute, Steven Koenning & wife, Kimberlie, of Marble Falls,  Texas, Janean Luckianow & husband, Kevin, of Bridge City, Mark Koenning & wife, Heather, of Lake Jackson; son-in-law, Manuel Moreno of Freeport; former son-in law, Neal Longbotham of Brazoria; former daughter-in law, Bobbie Zavala of West Columbia; 22 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Louise  Johnson of Ganado; aunt, Martha Koenning of Ganado; two sisters-in law, Eunice Koenning of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Mary Ridings of Angleton, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Koenning; three brothers, James Cole Koenning, Johnnie Lee Koenning, Roy Dale Koenning; one sister, Alice Zajicek; son-in law, Edwin (Corky) Dierks.

William moved into the Brazosport area during the early 1940s to help build the Mag Cells at Dow Chemical and worked for a time in the chlorine plant. Living in  Jones Creek, he met and married the love of his life from down the street. On December 2, 1943, they were married at the  Jackson County courthouse in Edna,  Texas. Returning to  Jones Creek, then to Velasco, William became a mechanic at Calvert’s Garage. He was later employed for over sixteen years with the Brazosport Independent School District in various capacities such as carpenter, painter, plumber, electrician’s helper, bus mechanic and driver. After leaving BISD, he worked for a number of contractors, several apartment complexes, and concluded at Freeport Welding as a tool man.

The great love of William’s life was his family. He loved all of his babies and would spend time singing, rocking and playing with them. In his last years he continued his woodworking and furniture refinishing; began turning out pencil drawings for friends and family; spent time working “find-a-word puzzles” and enjoyed reading and watching westerns. Through the years he instilled in his family a love for family and concern for others. He believed you should treat and speak to others the same way as you wanted them to treat you and speak to you. As a result of his example, his children are active in a fire department, law enforcement, and community affairs and various ones serve in their local churches as deacons, teachers, singers and musicians. William went through this world with his winsome smile and firm handshake making friends and being an example to his family that you need to depend on God; do the best you can at whatever you are given to do; and do not get in a hurry, take your time and look at the sunset and the beautiful world God created.

Pallbearers will be his children.
