Services are pending for Jose P. Gutierrez, 85, of Sweeny, with Dixon Funeral Home of Brazoria. He died Friday, Sept. 19. 2003 at his residence.

THEOPAL WOODARD

Services are pending for Theopal Woodard, 90, of Angleton, with Dixie Funeral Home of Brazoria. She died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2003, at Country Village Care in Angleton,  Texas.

EUGENE FARRER

Eugene Farrer, age 75, of Brazoria passed away on Sept. 19, 2003. Services are pending with Stroud Funeral Home.

BRET ERVIN MCKNIGHT SR.

Bret Ervin McKnight Sr., 40, of Sweeny, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 19, 2003, to join his loved ones. Many friends and relatives were at his bedside at Brazosport Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Stroud Funeral Home in Clute with Pastors Rodney Coales and Donald Touchque officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from noon to service time. Interment will be at Sweeny Cemetery.

Bret was a proud son, brother, father and PaPa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, DeLane Eubanks McKnight; father, A.J. McKnight; and nephew, Derek Rea.

Survivors include his mother, Rose McKnight; sons: Bret Ervin McKnight Jr. and wife, Jimmie Ann, Christopher DeWayne McKnight, Cory Andrew McKnight; sisters: Lynette Rea and husband, Alan, Lisa Burch and husband, Tommy; brother, Andy McKnight; grandson, Caleb DeWayne McKnight; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Emmanuel Baptist Church to help defray funeral expenses.

JAMES AUSTIN ENNIS

James Austin Ennis, age 74, of Austin, formerly a longtime resident of Clute, TX, died Friday morning in Cornerstone Hospital of Austin after a lengthy illness.

He was the son of Mr. Austin Milton Ennis and Mrs. Mary E. Dunning, who were south Austin residents. He was lifetime member of Carpenter Local 526, where he was active for 51 years. He retired from carpentry in March of 1989.

James Ennis was a member of the Freeport Presbyterian Church, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and the Elks’ Clute chapter.

Survivors include his sister, Dorthy Nell Byrd of Sevierville, TN; his stepbrother, Cordell Dearing of Luling TX; his daughter, Monica Ennis Dirba and husband, Jerry Frank Dirba Jr.; his grandsons, Matthew Douglas Dirba and Joel Austin Dirba; all of Pflugerville, TX.

Visitation was from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2003 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 22, 2003, in Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 N. IH 35, Pflugerville, TX 78660, with Pastor Tom Schoeneck of Faith Church in Round Rock officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 in Restwood Memorial Park, 1038 W. Lake  Jackson Rd., Lake Jackson, TX 77566.

EUGENE 'BUFORD' BUSTER FARRAR

Buster Farrar, 75, of Brazoria passed away on Friday, September 19, 2003, at Sweeny Hospital.

Buster was born July 29, 1928, and resided in Clute until 1967 and has lived in Brazoria since that time. He was a pipefitter through Local 211 for more than 30 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Brazoria. On June 3, 2003, Buster and Gertrude celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Family will receive friends on Monday, September 22, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Stroud Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church of Brazoria on Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. with pastors Sealy Smith, David Pate and Rodney Pate officiating.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Farrar of Brazoria; son, Bubba Farrar and wife, Jeanette, of Angleton; daughters, Martha Finley and husband, Rickey, of Sweeny and Sandy Manning and husband, Jesse, of Brazoria; 5 grandchildren, Michell Azbell of Angleton, Aaron Finley of San Antonio, Jessica, Travis and Chrissa Manning of Brazoria; numerous nieces, nephews and many other loving relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Shane Dement, Steve Farrar, Ricky Miller, Conrad Moody, Vurtice Pate and James Shanks. Honorary pallbearers will be George Lahrssen, First Baptist Church of Brazoria Men’s Adult Sunday School and Pipefitters Local 211.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Brazoria Youth Department or Hospice Care Team.

JOSE P. GUTIERREZ

Funeral services for Jose P. Gutierrez, 85, of Sweeny will be Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at Wild Peach Baptist Church in Brazoria with Pastor Milton Rawles officiating. Burial will be in the Sweeny Cemetery.

He died Friday, September 19, 2003, at his residence.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Sweeny.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfonso and Claudia Gutierrez, and two sons, Albert Gutierrez and Joseph B. Gutierrez.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary Gutierrez, Sweeny; 4 sons, Reynaldo Gutierrez (Helen), George Lopez (Susan), Esubio Gutierrez, Michael Gutierrez, all of Sweeny; 7 daughters, Lydia Cabrera, Lake Jackson, Celia Ramirez (Louis), Clute, Martha Browning (Steve), San Antonio, Gloria Moore (David), Rosa Bentancur, all of Sweeny, Alice Vellijo (Adam), Mathis, Vicky Gutierrez, Houston; 5 brothers, Leon Gutierrez (Lillie), Simon Gutierrez Sr., Candelario Gutierrez (Dominga), all of Sweeny, Rodrigo Gutierrez (Virginia), Otillio Gutierrez (Elvira), all of Houston; 2 sisters, Andrea Sanchez (Pablo), Sugar Valley, Ignacia Barrientez, Sweeny; 38 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be his grandsons, Garland Gutierrez, Robert Gutierrez, Christopher Alamia, Arthur Bentancur, Robert Torres and Lem Mooney.

Honorary pallbearer will be Tony Bentancur.

Visitation will be Monday, September 22, 2003, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Dixon Funeral Home Chapel.

A Rosary will be held Monday, September 22, 2003, from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 p.m. at the Dixon Funeral Home Chapel.

Arrangements are by Dixon Funeral Home of Brazoria.

THERESA DARLENE PENNINGTON

Theresa Darlene Pennington, 44, of Trinity passed away September 19, 2003, at Methodist Hospital in Houston,  Texas. She was a member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. Theresa enjoyed fishing, camping, the outdoors and especially the sun. She believed in living life to the fullest every day. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, George Pennington; three sons: Chris Cummings and wife, Stephanie, Robert Pennington and wife, Shasteen, Jeremy Pennington; stepsons: Philip Pennington, Alan Elton Pennington and wife, Leticia; stepdaughter: La Nelle Denise Pennington; parents: Gary Patrick Littleton and wife, Phyllis; mother Lynn Sarte; mother-in-law: Patricia Pennington; sisters: Glenda Charrier, Rhonda Moss; brothers: Michael Littleton, Alvin Littleton, Thomas Littleton, Ryan Littleton; grandchildren: Elizabeth and Victoria Cummings, Avery Pennington.

Family to receive friends 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at Lakewood. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at the Lakewood Chapel with the Rev. Liz Parker of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will follow at Restwood Memorial Park.

Pallbearers: Chris Kraemer, Philip Pennington, Alan Pennington, Andy Littleton, Allen Littleton, Tre’ McCrummen.

Theresa will always be remembered for her very loving and giving nature and her encouragement to have fun with life every day.

BEATRICE ALENE (FONDREN) HAMMOND

8/26/1916-9/19/2003

Mrs. Hammond was born in Van Vleck,  Texas, to William Arthur and Frances Pauline (Yates) Fondren. The youngest of 20 children, Mrs. Hammond graduated from Bay City High School in May of 1935, then married Will Chenault Hammond July 20, 1935, and made their home in Sweeny.

Mrs. Hammond was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years in 2001; her parents; and all her siblings.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Frankie and Wesley Anderson, Will C. (Buddy Jr.) and Yvonne Hammond, all of Sweeny, and Carolyn Sue and Ray Kulhanek of Danbury.

Seven grandchildren: Wesley Anderson Jr., Allen Anderson, Connie Hendricks and husband, Dan, all of Sweeny, Wendy Tabone and husband, Vincent, of Lake Jackson, Ray Kulhanek Jr., David Kulhanek, Tara Thomas and husband, Tim, all of Danbury.

17 great-grandchildren: Dr. Cody Anderson and wife, Mary Margaret, of San Antonio, Travis Anderson and wife, Michelle, of Brazoria, Daniel Anderson of Sweeny, Casey Anderson of Nacogdoches, Candi, Eric and Will Hendricks, all of Sweeny, Sierra, Sianna and Christian Tabone of Lake Jackson, Ray Allen Kulhanek of Danbury, Kristine and Samantha Kulhanek of Angleton, Kendall Kulhanek, Megan Mitchell and Morgan Thomas, all of Danbury.

Three great-great-grandchildren: Mason Anderson, Cory Anderson and Britton Anderson. Also by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hammond was dearly loved not only by family but by all that knew her. She volunteered her time and years of service to Girl Scouting through which many a young woman has been groomed into productive adults.

“Grandma,” as she was affectionately called, was an avid follower of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities to include: scouting, rodeo, baseball, softball, football, basketball, volleyball and her great love of auto racing.

Mrs. Hammond resided at her home of 66 years until she became too debilitated by Alzheimer’s to be cared for at home, she resided the remainder of her years at Cypress  Woods Nursing Facility in Angleton.

Pallbearers will be her great-grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Thomasson, Jr., Walter Thomasson, Dan Thomasson, Don Thomasson and Tim Thomasson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Septem-ber 23, 2003, at the Church of Christ of Sweeny,  Texas.

Interment will follow at Sweeny Cemetery.

JAMES RUDOLPH CULVER

1911-2003

James Rudolph Culver, 92, passed away Monday, September 22, 2003, in the Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson,  Texas.

He was born on February 12, 1911, in Autauga County, Alabama, and lived in Gadsden and Guntersville, Alabama, until he moved to Columbia Lakes,  Texas, in 1993. He was a 1943 graduate of Auburn University. Before retiring in 1978, he was an employee of the State of Alabama. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James William & Amanda Eliza Culver; his wife of 62 years, Farrah Hunter Culver; and three brothers, Hubert Russell Culver, Sylvan Dekalb Culver and Graham Rudder Culver.

He is survived by his wife of eight years, Helen Hindsley Macon Culver of Country Village Care, Angleton; daughter, Elna Culver Countryman & husband Jerry Countryman of Columbia Lakes; grandsons, Randall Kent Countryman of Kingwood and Gregory Keith Countryman of Sugar Land; great-grandson, Ty Caleb Countryman of Kingwood, brother, Tooney Chester Culver & wife, Catherine, of Seneca,  South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at Rainbow Memorial Park, Gadsden, Alabama.

Arrangements will be made by Collier-Butler Funeral Home in Gadsen, Alabama.

HAROLD LEON ELSTER

Funeral services for Harold Leon Elster, 58, of Damon,  Texas, are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at First English Lutheran Church in Damon,  Texas, with Pastor Karen Davidson officiating.

He was born Tuesday, January 23, 1945, in Damon,  Texas, and died Monday, September 22, 2003, in Sweeny,  Texas.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at Baker Funeral Home Chapel in West Columbia,  Texas.

He was a member of First English Lutheran Church and was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Dorothy Elster of Damon; daughter & son-in-law, Amber & Todd Lantz of Mansfield; brothers & sisters-in-law, Arnold Jr. & Ruth Elster of Needville, Allen & Helene Elster of Damon, David Elster of Damon and Glen & Annette Elster of Damon; sisters & brothers-in-law, Margie & Owen Borchardt of Damon, Dorothy & Wayne Everett of Uvalde and Barbara & Joe Losack of Mansfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Sr. & Anna Bell Elster.

Pallbearers will be Allen Elster, David Elster, Glen Elster, Rodney Elster, Arnold Elster, Jr. and Robert Zacek.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First English Lutheran Church or C. E. M. S.
