BERTHA MARIE PETRY HARNESS

Bertha Marie Petry Harness passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2004, in Houston,  Texas, at the Home Sweet Home nursing facility.

Bertha was born on March 3, 1920, in Hockley,  Texas. She and her husband, Jasper, moved to the Brazosport area soon after they married in 1943.

Bertha was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Many wonderful memories were made in her kitchen as the aroma from her delicious pies and cookies filled the air.

She was preceded in death in the year 2000 by her husband of 57 years, Jasper Harness; her sister, Elnora Petry O’Daniel; her brother, Albert Petry. Her parents, Alfred and Mary Catherine Petry, also preceded her in death.

Bertha is survived by her sister, Rosalee Spencer and husband, George; brother, Franklin Petry; children, Allen Harness, Marilyn Ponder and husband, Kenneth, Carol Adamcik and husband, Neal, Jerry Harness and wife, Rayna; grandchildren, Clint Ponder and wife, Margarita; Roy, Ted, and Lisa Ponder, Brett Adamcik, Michelle and Erica Harness.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2004, at Lakewood Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Wesley First United Methodist Church in Clute, where Bertha was a longtime member.

Pallbearers will be Clint Ponder, Roy Ponder, Ted Ponder, Brett Adamcik, Bill Petry and David Petry.

Memorial donations may be made to Wesley First United Methodist Church, One Wesley Drive, Clute,  Texas 77531.

DEAN BROGAN

Dean Brogan, 71, of Clute,  Texas, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2004, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital.

Services are pending with Lakewood Funeral Chapel, 98 N. Dixie Drive, Lake Jackson,  Texas. (979) 297-6464.

S.E. “ED” HESTER

Funeral services for Ed Hester, of Angleton,  Texas, will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 24, 2004, at 1st Baptist Church in Angleton with Dr. Rodney Bowman officiating.

Burial will follow in Angleton Cemetery.

Friends many visit with the family from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2004, at Palms Funeral Home.

Ed was born on April 17, 1913 in Mendon,  Louisiana. He married Margaret Martin in 1939 and they made their home in Brazoria County in 1942. Ed retired from Dow Chemical after 32 years of service. He was an avid gardener, loved his fried okra and playing dominoes. He also loved reading his favorite book - The Bible. He was rightly named Sunbeam, because he was always smiling. He died on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 in Deer Park at the age of 90.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ed Lee and Johnnie Hester.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Margaret Hester; sons, Martin Edwin “Ed” Hester and wife, Marilyn, of Houston, Mac Hester of Houston; grandchildren, Kimberly Mules, Michael Hester, Carrie Hester; great-grandchildren, Jensen Miller, Paxton Taylor, Tyler Mules and Megan Mules; and sister, Gladyne Potter.

DERYLE E. COX SR.

Deryle E. Cox Sr., 71, of Brazoria, died on Thursday, January 22, 2004, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson,  Texas.

EVELYN DIANE JOHNSON

Funeral services for Evelyn Diane Johnson, 42, of Alvin,  Texas, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Greater New hope Baptist Church, 908 N. 2nd St., Alvin,  Texas, with the Reverend Donald Archie officiating.

Burial will be in Paradise South Cemetery in Houston,  Texas.

She died on January 17, 2004, in  Texas City,  Texas.

She was a member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church.

She is survived by her parents, Jeanette and Robert Peterson Sr. of Alvin; husband, Moses Johnson, of Alvin; two sons, Moses D. Johnson, Jerime  Johnson of Alvin; one daughter, Whitney Johnson, Alvin; two brothers, Robert Peterson Jr. (Maria) of  Texas City, Robbie Hall (Sherka) of Angleton; five sisters, Vickie Jamble (Timothy), Lavern Peterson (Oris), Annette Woodard (Maurice), JoAnn Addison (Dorance), all of Alvin, Allegra Hall (Harold) of Angleton; three grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Dennis Peterson, Patrick Peterson, William Peterson, Eugene Johnson, Derrick  Jones and Kenneth Cofield.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tyrone Peterson, Charlie Cofield, Jessie Cofield, Derrick Addison, Charles Morgan and Robert Peterson III.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2004, at Dixon Funeral Home Chapel, and a wake will be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2004, at Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Alvin.

MELVIN ROY HAGEMEIER

Melvin Roy Hagemeier, 68, of Clute,  Texas, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004, in Lake Jackson,  Texas.

He was born Saturday, October 12, 1935, in West Columbia,  Texas. He was a longtime resident of West Columbia,  Texas.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Velma Hagemeier, of Clute; son, Kenneth Roy Hagemeier of Clute; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Shirley Hagemeier of Africa, Bill and Bitsy Hagemeier of  Johnson City, Freddie and Cookie Hagemeier of Wimberly, Johnny Hagemeier of Sweeny; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward John and Alice Hagemeier; brothers, C.E. and Tommy Hagemeier.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Baker Funeral Chapel in Brazoria,  Texas, with Pastor Bob Hankins officiating.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2004, at Baker Funeral Home in Brazoria.

Interment will be at Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest in West Columbia,  Texas.

Pallbearers will be Heath Hagemeier, James Hagemeier and Tim Hagemeier.

Memorials may be given in Melvin’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.

DEVERE DEAN BROGAN

DeVere Dean Brogan, 71, of Clute,  Texas, formerly of Baton Rouge,  Louisiana, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2004, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Brogan was born on October 7, 1932, in Venice, California to Alfred George and Enola Mae Hollowell Brogan.

Dean served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nita Brogan; son Randy Brogan & wife, Teresa; daughter, Sandie Walther & husband, Brian; brother Alfred Brogan Jr.; grandchildren, Seth and Danielle Brogan, Rebekah and Ben Walther, along with numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Clute,  Texas, with Pastor Warren  Johnson of Gospel Light Baptist Church of Baton Rouge,  Louisiana officiating.

Family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

DERYLE ERVIN COX SR.

Memorial services for Deryle Ervin Cox Sr., 71, of Brazoria,  Texas, will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Dixon Funeral Home Chapel in Brazoria,  Texas, with Mark Ducroz officiating.

He died on Thursday, January 22, 2004, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson,  Texas.

Mr. Cox served in the United States Army. He worked for Dow Chemical Company as an operator after returning from the service. He was a member of VFW Post #2412 in Sargent,  Texas.

He is survived by two sons, Charlie Cox (Kathie) of Brazoria, Deryle Cox Jr. (Diane) of Houston; two daughters, Carol Sequra (Tommy) of Brazoria, Cheryle Morin (Jim) of Dexter, Missouri; brother, Steve Cox (Eileen) of Lake Jackson; sister, Nell Dorett of Lake Jackson; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

GEORGE HENRY MCGRATH III

George Henry McGrath III, 50, of Lake Jackson,  Texas, died on Monday, January 19, 2004, in a house fire.

He was born in 1953 to Mary Jane McGrath and the late George Henry McGrath Jr.

He lived in Lake  Jackson and Houston for 17 years. He worked on several boats as a deckhand. He relocated to Florida and returned to  Texas in 1991 where he moved into the home he grew up in. He loved “Rock ’n Roll” music and had a vast knowledge of music in general.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Jane McGrath of Sweeny; brothers, John McGrath of Haddenfield, New Jersey, Patrick McGrath of Lake Jackson; sister, Kathleen McGrath of Houston; cousin/brother, Michael Tully of Tempe, Arizona.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2004, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church of Lake Jackson,  Texas. (979) 297-3041.

EVELYN DIANE JOHNSON

JOHN E. WEBER SR.

Graveside services for John E. Weber Sr., 39, of Churchill,  Texas, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2004, at Sweeny Cemetery.

He died Thursday, January 22, 2004, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson. Burial will be in Sweeny Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 26, 2004, at Baker Funeral Home in Brazoria.

He was born March 5, 1964, to Ed and Joyce Weber in Austin,  Texas.

Survivors include spouse, Sarah Anne Weber; parents, Ed and Joyce Weber; sons, John E. Weber Jr., Jefferey Scott Weber, Timothy Lee Weber; daughter, Nicole Weber; brother, Bill Turner; sisters, Diana Turner and Joyce Weber; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John E. Weber, Jefferey Scott Weber, Timothy Weber, Louis Turner, Willie Turner and Lathen Davenport. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Turner and Tony Krug.
