NORA HELEN PETRO

Nora Helen Petro, 91, of  Jones Creek,  Texas, went to her heavenly reward on Thursday, March 25, 2004.

She was born on May 5, 1912, in El Campo,  Texas, and grew up in Brady. Nora came to the Freeport area about 1930 to work in her sister’s bakery shop. It was while working in the bakery shop that she met her husband, Andrew, who was the delivery man for the grocery store next to the bakery. They were married March 22, 1931, during the Great Depression. In the first years of their marriage, they lived on a boat and made their living by catching and selling bait to sport fishermen. After the Depression, they were able to venture into their things and Andrew began running a party boat for deep-sea fishing. Even though Nora never learned to swim, she accompanied Andrew whenever he took out a fishing party. She cared for those in the party who became seasick, prepared food for the party and performed crew duties as required.

Nora’s major job was that of homemaker, a job she accomplished with love and generosity. She opened her home to many in need, and became a mother to more than her own two children. Because of her love for children, she opened a day care in her home, which she ran for many years. Her greatest love was for her extended family and she enjoyed cooking and visiting with them. The slightest excuse gave rise to a big seafood dinner celebration with plenty of lemon pie. If there was no birthday or holiday to celebrate, then we often had the big dinner “just ’cause.”

Nora was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Andrew Nicholas Petro; sisters, Alva Ehlert, Ida Glasscock, Maudie Cozby; brothers, William, Johnny, Tommy and Ward Baucom.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Petro and wife, Conie, of Churchill; her daughter, Linda Spates of  Jones Creek; three granddaughters, Regina Davis and husband, Chris, of  Jones Creek, Alisa Allison and husband, Larry, of Clute, and Viannah Petro of Austin; eight great-grandchildren,  Taylor and Logan Strother, Garrett, Joshua and Abigail Allison, and Jennifer, Larry and Erin Davis.

Nora was an active member of  Jones Creek Baptist Church, where she served in the nursery and children’s department for over 50 years. Nora was a selfless, loving, giving person who touched many lives. She will be missed by all who knew her. The world is a better place for her having been in it.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at Baker Funeral Home in Brazoria,  Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at  Jones Creek Baptist Church in  Jones Creek, led by the Reverend Brent Pittman.
