JOHN W. PIRTLE
1928-2004
John W. Pirtle, 75, of Brazoria,  Texas, went to be in his heavenly resting place Thursday, March 25, 2004, after an ordeal with cancer.
John was born June 20, 1928, in Sullivan, Indiana. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service in 1969 and moved to the Brazosport area to work for Dow Chemical, where he achieved retirement in 1989. He was a member of Brigance Road Baptist Church and an active member of Brazoria Masonic Lodge 327. Over the years, he was involved with local law enforcement as a reserve deputy with the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy constable and a police officer for the former city of Lake Barbara. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Visitation will be at Stroud Funeral Home in Clute on Saturday, March 27, 2004, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Services will be at Stroud Funeral Home in Clute on Sunday, March 28, 2004, at 3:00 p.m. with Chaplain Kenneth Lott officiating.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Billie DeWitt Pirtle; son, Shane and wife, Linda, of Lake Jackson; son, Shaun and wife, Joy, of Brazoria; daughter, Sharon and husband, Frank Alvarez, of Brazoria; son, Shalden and fiancée, Kelly Gibson, of Brazoria; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren; sister, Vera Rusk and husband, Gene, of West Columbia; brother, Allen and wife, Marceta, of Carlisle, Indiana; and sister-in-law, Barb Pirtle of Sullivan, Indiana; numerous nieces and nephews and his best friend Gene Case of Brazoria.
He is preceded in death by his father, William Rollie Pirtle, mother, Naomi Pirtle; brothers, Darrell and Joe Pirtle; and sister, Mary Eaton.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Helping Hands Hospice Care, The American Cancer Society or Masonic Lodge 327.

Orville Adkins
Orville Adkins, 74, of Clute,  Texas, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 29, 2004, at Stroud Funeral Home with Pastor John Ponzi officiating.
Interment will be at Restwood Memorial Park.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Adkins; and daughter, Pamela Gann.
He is survived by his daughter, Jeri DuBois and husband, Joe, of Lake Jackson; grandchildren, Monique  Taylor and husband, Talmadge, of Cordova, Tennessee, Chris DuBois and wife, Julisa, of Richwood, Tania Simmons and husband, Adam, of Lake Jackson, Ryan Perry and wife, Tammy, of Lake Jackson, Michael Tanguma of Austin; 13 great-grandchildren.

CATHY ANN SCHROETER

Cathy Ann Schroeter, 47, of Sweeny passed away Friday, March 26, 2004, at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Barbara Thomas.

She is survived by one son, Dale Schroeter of  South Carolina; three brothers, Michael Thomas (Donna) of Sweeny, Donald Thomas (Terri) of Moncks Corner,  South Carolina and Curtis Thomas of Huntsville; one sister, Claudette Cisneros (Mike) of Griffin, Georgia; and longtime friend George Schroeter of Sweeny.

Visitation will be Monday, March 29, 2004, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Dixon Funeral Home Chapel.

Arrangements are by Dixon Funeral Home of Brazoria.

JOE REYES JR.

Joe Reyes Jr., age 55, of Houston,  Texas, formerly of Blessing, died on Saturday, March 27, 2004, in Houston,  Texas.

He was born on June 18, 1948, in Matagorda County to Joe Reyes Sr., of Houston, and the late Frances Salinas Reyes.

He was employed by Houston ISD at Greg Elementary as a special education teacher. He was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 2003 by Houston ISD. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brazoria, a fourth-degree Knights of Columbus, a member of the Guadalupenas, the Men’s Club and former sponsor of the Key Club of Brazosport High School.

He is survived by his father; his wife, Rosa Solis Reyes; daughters, Frances Reyes-Matula, of Lake Jackson, Katherine Reyes and Rosa Reyes, both of Houston; sons, Roland Reyes, of Austin, Jose Reyes, of Houston; sisters, Lorena Villarreal, of Wharton, Linda Cruz, of Austin, and Deborah Tovar, of Blessing; brothers, Ernest Reyes, of Blessing and Leon Reyes of Bay City; and four grandchildren.

Rosary was held on Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the St. Robert’s Catholic Church in El Campo.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2004, at St. Robert’s Catholic Church and the Reverend Lawrence Matula officiated.

Interment was at the Holy Cross Memorial Park in El Campo,  Texas.

PRAXEDIS "BIG FOOT" GARCIA SR.

Praxedis “Big Foot” Garcia Sr., 51, of Freeport,  Texas, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson,  Texas.

Funeral services are pending with Ramirez Funeral Home in Kingsville,  Texas.

ROSA MAE WALKER ALLEN

Rosa Mae Walker Allen, 95, of Cedar Lane, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004, at The Legacy in Bay City.

Mrs. Allen was born in Altair,  Texas, on October 11, 1908, to the late Lee Roy and Rosa Lee Bryan Walker.

She was a charter member of the First United Methodist Church of Van Vleck and of the Methodist Woman’s Society, where she held various offices during her active years.

In 1919, her family moved to the Cedar Lane,  Texas, area where she lived most of her life. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1924 before enrolling in Southwest  Texas Teachers College in San Marcos,  Texas. After attending college, she returned to Matagorda County, where she taught four grades in the Prairie Center two-room schoolhouse, near Blessing, for two years. When she married Clarence Allen in 1932, she left Prairie Center for Riceville, a one-room school near Wadsworth, to teach three more years before she decided to fulfill her ambition to become a full-time homemaker. After her children were grown, her love of teaching called her back to the classroom for a short tenure at Van Vleck Elementary School.

She was an unselfish, loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend whose strength and faith in God taught by example what it means to live a Christian life. She will be dearly missed by those whose lives she touched during her 95 years on the Earth.

Survivors include her children: Peggy Ottis and husband, George “Geep,” of West Columbia, Richard Allen and wife, Carol, of Bay City, Mary Lee Allen, of San Antonio, and Jerry Allen and wife, Lynell, of West Columbia; four grandchildren: Chris Ottis of Brazoria, Letisha “Tish” Ottis, Berryman and husband, Joel, of Round Rock, Cullen Allen and wife, Shelley, of Gibsonia, PA, and Daryl Allen and wife, Sheryl, of Fort Worth; four great-grandchildren: Ryan, Kyle, Robbie and Lynette Allen; brother: Samuel Walker, of Lake Jackson; sister-in-law: Mollie Walker, of Sweeny; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence R. Allen, in 1980, and by two sisters and three brothers.

The family received friends Monday, March 29, 2004, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at  Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held today March 30, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at  Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Cullen Allen and Linda Maxey officiating.

Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers will be Chris Ottis, Daryl Allen, Joe Berryman, Ray Walker, Terry Walker and Bryan Shannon.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James E. Cowart, M.D., Rosa Mae’s primary-care physician for 48 years; Imogene Acklin, her college roommate who has remained a dear friend for 76 years; Dan and Charlean O’Connell, Johnny Werlla, Martha Lacy and the devoted staff of The Legacy.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 497, Van Vleck, TX 77482, or to a charity of choice.

JULIAN WATTERS TAYLOR JR.

Julian Watters  Taylor Jr., 87, died on Monday, March 29, 2004, in Angleton,  Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004 at First Presbyterian Church of Angleton.

Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel, 98 N. Dixie Drive, Lake Jackson,  Texas. (979) 297-6464.

BONNIE LEE WARD

It is with deep sadness that the family of Bonnie Lee Ward, 57, of Corpus Christi,  Texas, announces her peaceful passing on March 28, 2004, at Blue Bonnet Manor in Karnes City,  Texas.

Bonnie is predeceased by her parents, C.K. (Bill) and Jimmie Lee Ward, of Mathis,  Texas; and grandmother, Edith Sutherland, of Corpus Christi,  Texas.

Bonnie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Marty and Paula Boone, of Sweeny; her uncle, Gerald Sutherland; her aunt, Aileen Cantrell, all of Corpus Christi; her nieces, Sandra Maricle, of Sweeny; Dena Adiassi, of San Antonio; Karen Hale, of Karnes City; Terri Bostick, of Stephenville; her nephews, David and Scott Sutherland, of Corpus Christi; Kenneth Aurthor, of Dallas; Thurman Author, of San Antonio; and Olan Cantrell, of Seattle,  Washington.

Graveside services will be held at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi,  Texas, Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at 4:00 p.m.

EDWARD "ED" ADOLPH PALAT

Edward “Ed” Adolph Palat, 88, of Clute,  Texas, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2004, in Clute,  Texas.

Ed was born on January 9, 1916, near Needville,  Texas. He worked for Dow Chemical Co. from 1941 to 1975. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Freeport,  Texas. He will be remembered as the accordion player at many nursing homes and especially at Village on the Creek Nursing Home, where he resided for the last five months.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marie of 55 years; three brothers, Willie, Alvin and Ernest Palat; and his nephew, Leslie Seiler.

He is survived by his two sisters, Mildred Seiler and husband, Leroy, of Blanco, Edna “Dollie” Tribble, of Brazoria; sister-in-law, Jessie Palat; one niece, Gail Tarver, of Houston; six nephews, Ronnie Tribble, of Lake Jackson, William and Glenn Palat, of Freeport, Jimmy Palat, of Lake Jackson, Richard Palat, of West Columbia, Larry Seiler, of Austin; several great-nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives; and special friend, Nell Adams.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel, 98 N. Dixie Drive, Lake Jackson,  Texas.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in Davis Greenlawn Cemetery, 3900 B.F. Terry Blvd., Rosenberg,  Texas.

MARY ETTA TAYLOR

Mary Etta Taylor, 40, of  Texas City, died on Monday, March 29, 2004, in  Texas City.

She was born March 28, 1964, in Angleton,  Texas.

Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

She is survived by her father, Sonny Gerkin of Richwood,  Texas; daughter, Samantha  Taylor of  Jones Creek.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Lynola Ruth Gerkin; sisters, Donna Jean Gerkin, Terri Ann Gerkin and Debra Denice Gerkin Tucker.

Burial will follow in Santa Gertrudis Memorial Cemet-ery.

Praxedis is survived by his wife, Diana O. Garcia, of Freeport; daughter, Janida (Jose) Urbina of Freeport; sons, Praxedis (Pauline) Garcia and David (Carrie) Garcia, all of Freeport; brothers, Emerico (Gloria) Garcia of Kingsville, Gerardo (Olga) Garcia of Laredo, Joel (Luz Elva) Garcia and Roel Garcia, both of Realitos; two sisters, Olga (Carlos) Flores of San Antonio and Rita Minerva (Joe) DeLa Garza of Kingsville; mother, Rita H. Garcia of Realitos; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

JULIAN WATTERS TAYLOR JR.

Julian Watters  Taylor Jr., 87, entered into peaceful rest on Monday, March 29, 2004, in Angleton,  Texas. Julian was born July 16, 1916, in Nanafalia, Alabama, to Julian Watters  Taylor Sr. and Mary Lou Barr Taylor. He attended the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. During World War II, he served as flight navigator and taught navigation at Ellington Air Base. In 1944, Julian married Beulah Bellamy Smith. From 1944 to 1957, he operated a farm in Nanafalia, Alabama, and worked for Olin Matheson Company. In 1957, he and his wife moved to Houston, where he went to work for HL&P. He retired from HL&P in 1984 after 27 years of service, where he served as district manager of the Brazosport area from 1969 to 1984. Mrs. Beulah  Taylor passed away in 1986, and in 1987 he married Elizabeth Muir Taylor, who also preceded him in death in 2000.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and granddaughter, Karen Elizabeth Taylor. He further served his community as chairman of the board for Salvation Army in Freeport, president of the Brazosport United Way and member of Brazosport Chamber of Commerce, and as Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

He is survived by his son, Julian W. “Pat”  Taylor III; daughter, Bellamy “Bami”  Taylor Hoffman and husband, Larry; four grandchildren, Kimberly Ann Taylor, Kelly Lynn Hoffman, Jenny Lane Matthews and husband, Chris, James Andrews Hoffman and wife, Kelly; one great-grandchild, Gabby Hoffman; two stepchildren, Patricia Muir Sethness, and Blake Muir; along with numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Pallbearers will be Webb Tutt, Edward Taylor, James Hoffman, Col. Robert M. Howe, Ret., Blake Muir and Dwight Austin Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Barr Tutt, Harry Gardner, Walter Tutt, James Wallace Tutt III, Judge Jay Ray Gayle III, Jack Dingle, Wallace Shaw and William Rowage.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church, 130 S. Arcola, Angleton,  Texas, with Pastor Steve Floeck officiating.

Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

Donations may be made to Brazosport Salvation Army and First Presbyterian Church of Angleton, or any charity of your choice.
