Bernice Reba (Morgan) Mayfield, 93, died Nov. 14, 2006 in Bakersfield, CA.
Bernice was the third daughter of Bob Edward & Lela Dell (Mitchell) Morgan. She was born in Spur, TX December 7, 1912. Bernice married Lynn (Soapy) Mayfield of Jayton in 1927. They had one son, Jerry Don Mayfield, March 2, 1942.
Bernice is preceded in death by her husband, son, parents, 3 brothers, and 3 sisters. She is survied by her granddaughter, Ryan Tamara Mayfield and grandson Evin Mayfield of Bakersfield. One sister, Jean Westfall of Lubbock, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernice and Lynn graduated from  Texas Tech and then taught school in several small schools in West  Texas before moving to California. They first taught school in Needles, then Lynn became a fireman-engineer on the Railroad and they moved to Bakersfield. After Lynn died in 1957, Bernice continued in the school system as a Teacher, Counselar, and Principal. After a short retirement, she went back to work as a subsitute teacher until she was 83 years old, when she had to quit to care for her ailing son.

Graveside funeral services for Marian Burt, 99, of Spur, were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 27, at the Afton Cemetery. Officiating was Tom Taylor, Edler of the Primitive Baptist Church at Crosbyton,  Texas. Interment was in the Afton Cemetery under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home of Matador.
Mrs. Burt passed away Tuesday, November 14, at Dickens County Nursing Home in Spur.
Marian Velma Gates Burt was born August 10, 1907, at Afton. She was the daughter of William Eugene Gates, and Leotia Harvey Gates, who settled in Afton Community about 1890.
She was married to Burnest F. Burt in 1935, at Clovis, N.M. They made their home near Afton for many years, until Mr. Burt’s death on November 25, 1977. She then lived in Matador for several years, and later in Crosbyton and Spur.
She worked with her husband on the family ranch, and later was a telephone operator at Roaring Springs and Post Mistress at Afton. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Crosbyton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and by two nephews, L.A. and Donald Gates, and is survived by: two nephews, Ed Gates of San Marcos,  Texas, and Jimmy Gates of Mesa, Arizona; and a niece, Patsy Gates Kimbrough, of Austin,  Texas.

J.W. Vickrey, 72, of Afton died Wednesday, November 1, 2006 in Spur. Services were 2PM, Friday, November 3, 2006 at Highway 70 Church of Christ in Spur with Bob Martin officiating. Burial was in Spur Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home.
Mr. Vickrey was born December 13, 1933 in Roaring Springs to John William and Sally Andrews Vickrey. He graduated from Patton Springs High School in 1952. J.W. married Wilma Jean Kimmel on July 3, 1953 in Hobbs, NM. She preceded him in death in 1998. He was a lifetime resident of Dickens County. He served on the Patton Springs school board for several years, and was a farmer.
J.W. is survived by one son, Buster Vickrey and wife Sandy of Afton; two daughters, Mildred Bridge and husband DeWayne of Weatherford, and Patti Hagar and husband Craig of Spur; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the North Dickens Senior Citizens Center, P.O. Box 163, Dickens,  Texas 79229.

Alta Faye Rider, 67, went to be with the Lord Sunday afternoon, October 29, at a Lubbock hospital. Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 31, in the Clairemont Cemetery officiated by Rev. David  Jones under the care and direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Aspermont,  Texas.
Mrs. Rider was born in  Oklahoma. She married Larry Rider, and she was a longtime resident of Kent County. Mrs. Rider worked in many capacities in Kent County with the EMS, Tax Assessor/Collector, Boll Weevil Eradication program as well as a helpmate to her husband as he was a Game Warden and Sheriff for many years.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Rider of Jayton; daughters, Kathleen Rider of Jayton and Grace Clark of Big Lake; a son, Jim Rider of Big Spring; seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Sammy Kenney, age 59, died at his residence in Spur,  Texas on October 25, 2006. Funeral service will be held 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 28, 2006 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rocky Alexander officiating and eulogy given by Danny Menges. Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevevns Funeral Home.
Sammy Kenney was born August 30, 1947, a son of the late Eugene and Effie Kenney. He grew up in Ira and Snyder where he attended school. He lived in Eastland for several years, moving to Spur in July 2006. He was employed as an oil field truck driver. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Lee Ann Kenney of Snyder; five sisters, Doris Clinkinbeard of Cisco, Betty Menges of Longview, Patsy Alexander of Eastland, Louise and husband Leo Shields of Santa Anna, Shirley and husband John  Taylor of OŐBrien; one grandson; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Williams, and one sister, Dorothy Jackson.

Pogue LaQuey was born December 26,1929 in Truscott  Texas. He resided in Kent County. He passed away October 28, 2006 at his residence. Services were 12PM, Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at Campbell Funeral Home Chapel followed by burial in Girard Cemetery.
Pogue LaQuey was a carpenter and bricklayer all his life. He served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years Rosemary LaQuey and had 4 son and 2 daughters, 16 grandchildren, 6 great grand children. He was beloved husband, father, and grandfather and will be forever missed.

Clifford Clark Kyzer, 71, of San Angelo, formerly of Denver City, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2006 in San Angelo.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 26, 2006, in the Church of Christ in Denver City, TX with Brother Skip Rodgers officiating, assisted by Brother Kris Groda and Clyde Freeman. Interment followed in the Denver City Memorial Park with services under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home of Denver City.
Clifford was born January 13, 1935 in Sulpher Springs, TX to General Frank and Mattie Jewel Kyzer. He married Nell Thomason in Dickens, TX on May 22, 1953. Clifford worked as a pumper for Arco Oil & Gas for 35 years. He moved from Denver City to San Angelo in 2004. He was preceded in death by a son, Lanny Craig Kyzer in 1984, a brother, Ferrel Kyzer and a sister, Oline Woodard.
He is survived by his wife, Nell Kyzer of San Angelo, a son, Tracy Kyzer and wife, Beth Ann, of San Angelo, two granddaughters, Seanna Hiltner and Kassie Kyzer; three great-grandchildren, Hadley Hiltner, Kerstyn Hiltner, and Audrie Hiltner; and a sister Jeanette Foust of Commerce, TX.

Horace Grady Lackey, Jr., of Dublin,  Texas, passed away in Fort Worth on Sunday, October 29. He was born on February 3, 1927, in Tenaha,  Texas. He is survived by his wife, June; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy & E.C. (Buster) Cearley of Longview; a brother, Hugh Lackey of Dallas; six children and spouses, Trey & Diane Lackey of Arlington, Jay & Pam Lackey of Lubbock, Linda & James Chaddick of Amarillo, Kay & Gary Muramoto of Eagle River, AK, Janice & John Powell of Meeker,  Oklahoma, and Laura & Patrick Richardson of Portland, OR; sixteen grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Horace Grady and Alta Ellen (Jones) Lackey; a sister, Betty Jo Jones; and two grandchildren, Sarah Muramoto and Rebecca Lackey.
Grady and June (Fields) Lackey were married on August 23, 1948, in Hobbs, New Mexico. They moved to Spur,  Texas, in 1948, where he published the  Texas Spur (1948-1958). In 1962 the family moved to Lubbock, where he worked as an instructor at  Texas Tech University and owned the Apple-A-Day Pie Kitchen. After retirement, in 1999 the Lackeys moved to a ranch near Dublin.
Lackey served in the United States Army (1946-47). He was an active deacon and teacher in First Baptist Church, Spur; Oakwood Baptist Church, Lubbock; and First Baptist Church, Stephenville. He was especially committed to Christian missions, participating in mission trips around the world, including long-term stays in Korea and China.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 2, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Stephenville, with Minister of Administration and Education Donna Bowman officiating. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, in care of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 124, Stephenville, TX 76401.

Miriam R. "Mim" Baker passed away on September 25, 2006 in Dallas, TX after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born on July 23, 1921 in Lubbock, TX. She grew up in Spur,  Texas and graduated from Spur High School. She attended Baylor University for three years. At Baylor, she majored in Public School music and voice. She sang in the acappella choir while at Baylor. On January 1, 1943, she married Everitt Baker in Columbia,  South Carolina, where he was stationed in the Army. In 1944, Everitt was sent to Europe, and Mim returned to Spur to live until 1945, when Everitt was discharged from the Army. They lived in Gary, Indiana from May 1945 until 1947, when they moved to Dallas,  Texas. Mim was a member of Oak Cliff Christian Church. Mim was a “stay-at-home” Mom, who was very active in her girls school activities. She enjoyed working with PTA functions, Blue Bird and Camp Fire activities. Mim was a bridge enthusiast and played regular and duplicate bridge in several bridge clubs. She earned several Master Points in Duplicate. Mim was very loving, caring, and considerate to her parents, her husband, her children, and her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Everitt E. Baker; her daughters: Angela and husband Ray Pavlic, Sharron and husband Steve Suarez; her grandchildren: Deborah and husband Craig Crabb, Michael Suarez and wife Vera and Ashley Pavlic; her sister Julia Cairns of Canada; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Faith Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2006 at Restland Wildwood Chapel.

Betty McGalliard, 81, of Spur died Friday, October 20, 2006 in Lubbock. Services will be 1:00PM, Monday, October 23, 2006 at First Assembly of God Church in Spur with Rev. Bob Wright officiating. Burial will be in Spur Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home.
Betty was born December 12, 1924 in Kent County to Lewis and Ormetta Chambless Barber. She was a homemaker for many years and later worked at Bell’s Cafe in Spur and Shamrock Cafe in Dickens. She enjoyed cooking, and was a very caring and loving mother.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, one brother, one sister and her parents.
Betty is survived by four sons, Roy Kendrick of Amarillo, Richard Kendrick of Hereford, Reggie and Robert D. Kendrick both of Spur; two daughters, Dorothy Price of Lubbock and Shanna Adcock of Spur; four brothers, Billy Barber of Big Spring, Runt Barber of Kansas City, MO, James Barber of Lincoln, Arkansas and Hubert Barber of Big Spring; sixteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

Faye Murray, 93, of Bronson,  Texas died October 12, 2006 at Sabine County Hospital in Hemphill,  Texas. Services were held Saturday, October 14, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Milton Poindexter officiating. Burial was in Spur Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 2:00 p.m.
Faye was born January 19, 1913 in Ford County,  Texas to Oscar Taylor.
Faye was a homemaker. She was a former resident of Spur and a member of the First Baptist Church of Spur,  Texas. She lived in Bronson for 6 years.
Survivors include two sons; Dennis Murray & wife Mary of Austin, TX and Raymond Long of Bowie,  Texas; two daughters, Barbara Poindexter & husband Milton of Pineland, TX and Clarice Hampton & husband J.H. of Pittsburg, TX. 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Services for G.C. “Mac” McKinney were held October 12, 2006 at 2:00pm at Campbell Funeral Home Chapel in Spur with Rev. Larry Burton officiating. Burial followed at Spur Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home.
Mac died October 10, 2006 at Abilene Regional Hospital. G.C. was born May 24, 1922 in Cole, OK to Lloyd and Myrtle King McKinney. He married Zella Watson July 26, 1952. He was employed by Schlumberger where he was the Senior Operator for 25 years. Mac was also self employed as a contract laborer in his family business, McKinney Enterprises. He was an Aviation metal smith in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a member of the Christian Church in Arkansas and enjoyed his time at Rose Park Senior Citizens in Abilene where he loved to shoot pool and play “80.”
Mac is survived by his wife Zella of Abilene, a daughter; Christi McKinney of Abilene, a sister; Mildred Anderson of San Angelo, and several nieces and nephews. Mac was preceded in death by a brother; O.L. McKinney and his son; Michael McKinney in 1991. Memorials may be sent to Spur Memorial Cemetery P.O. Box 111, Spur, TX 79370; Hospice of the Big Country 4601 Hartford, Abilene, TX 79605; or Rose Park Senior Citizens 2609 S 7th St, Abilene, TX 79605.

Joye Olita Mitchell Rich, 84, of Lubbock, died Thursday at a local hospital. Funeral services were 1 PM, Saturday, October 7, 2006 at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel with David Parsons officiating. Interment followed in Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock.
Joye was born June 10, 1922 to Elonzo, E.L. (Lon) & Kathryn (Kate) Thompson Mitchell in the small farming community of Vinson, outside of Mangum, OK. She was the youngest of three brothers and one sister. She lived in Vinson until she married the love of her life, Fletcher Rich, from the same community.
Joye and Fletcher were united in marriage January 28, 1939 in  Oklahoma.
They lived for a time on the  Texas plains before moving to the Jayton-Girard area, where they lived many years farming. Upon retirement they moved to Spur,  Texas, for a few years. Then they made their home in Lubbock.
Joye is preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher, her parents, and her brothers and sister.
A nephew and his wife, Geary & La Rue James, and her “grand children,” Suan Fife and her husband Stewart, & Mitchell James survive her. Her “great grandchildren,” Vicki, Noah, Jeremy, and Aubrey Fife also survive her. She is survived by a host of other nieces and nephews.
